#slang of Košice

As I delved into these questions, they proliferated. I found myself thinking about our collective history as it relates to light. When we look at the night sky, almost all of the starlight we see is ancient. Some of the light we see precedes life on Earth and even Earth itself.

The sky, where the predominance of light originates, also has a story about our human connection to light. When I was in my early 20’s, I spent a year living in Košice, Slovakia. The Slovak language uses the same word for moon and month. This word is Mesiac, and it’s also a slang term used for a woman having her period. From this, I started looking at the words in other languages, and the same or similar words are used in a number of languages. It’s no secret that the moon orbits our planet every 27 days, called the sidereal month. We also have the Lunar Month of 30 days. Putting all three of these things together makes it evident that there’s more going on than our contemporary brains can automatically see. Not to say we cannot put together the pieces, but they are not patently obvious.

Emilio states: "I was visiting the guys from KORPIKLAANI at Petrax studios during the recording sessions of 'Kulkija' and Jonne told me about the idea of making many versions of 'Beer Beer' in different languages and asked me if I could help with the lyrics for the Spanish version. I suggested a more "Argentinian-slang" version and they loved the idea!. Then a few minutes later after writing them, all of a sudden, I found myself recording the vocals! Maybe there was too much Birra that day for coming up with such a crazy version! Disfruten, escabien y a rockear!"

Little introduction to the slang of Košice

When I was searching for some typical local expressions used in the everyday life in Košice, all my friends recommended unanimously the alternative city guide KSC. It is written and published by the local NGO „Východné pobrežie“ (English: Eastside) and includes a little dictionary of the local colloquial language, which is used here in town.

Unfortunately, I had to find out, that the book KSC is completely sold out and therefore guarded as a treasure by the few who could have caught one.

It was kind of an odyssey until I had the book in my hands. Thanks to the support of Juliana Sokolová and the help of Igor Kupec, the result is an overview of the most commonly used expressions. Enjoy!

Add to every beginning of your sentence the word „ta“

Ako sa máš? – Ale, ta!         How are you? - Oh well... don’t ask.

Ta ne?                                  Yes, of course                  

Ta jak!                                  Of course it is
