i would like to know your reasoning on the new who-doesn't-cover-who theory! basically why courtney & mallory swapped aragon & cleves
@mighty-morphin-theatre-nerd here's your response too. Once again @lightleckrereins was my partner in spreadsheets crime. Okay so per what's established here, we're going with: - A/B/C Nicole, A/S/H Mallory, B/H/P Courtney, and S/C/P Keirsten - In 2020, Nicole didn't cover Howard, Mallory didn't cover Aragon, Courtney didn't cover Cleves, and Keirsten wasn't with the show
Per those covers, here's who each queen could potentially NOT cover:
Tumblr media
- Nicole is the easiest. She said in a takeover in the last few weeks that she still doesn't cover Howard (I don't have the account; if someone does feel free to link it in the comments)
- Keirsten is also easy: Boleyn. We’ve seen parts of her Aragon costume and she has to cover Howard since Nicole doesn’t, so that leaves Boleyn. - Mallory is now first cover Aragon, so that knocks out the role she previously didn't play. We've seen her Parr costume, and she has to cover Boleyn since Keirsten doesn’t. That leaves Cleves as the role she doesn’t cover. - Since Mallory isn’t covering Cleves, Courtney now has to. We've seen what is most likely her Seymour costume and we know she did a vocal rehearsal for the role, so it's not Seymour either (and yes, the rehearsal was after Bryant Park). That means it has to be Aragon. She’s also said in the past that Cleves is the role she’s least comfortable playing and they had some degree of input into the roles they don’t cover, so that could definitely be a factor in why she swapped. - That also means that Mallory and Courtney just swapped the roles they don't cover, which is less of a headache for everyone involved. - To be on the safe side I will say that Courtney not covering Seymour is possible, but extremely unlikely. She originally covered the role on tour, with Abby having chronic health issues or injuries it makes sense to have as many covers as possible for the role, it’s very likely that that is her costume, etc. The most obvious is also just that it’d be bizarre for her to be learning a song in a vocal rehearsal for a role she doesn’t even cover when she had only learned two full tracks at that point in time.
Here’s what that full cover system looks like:
Tumblr media
While everyone has the three 1st covers as listed above, I categorized 1st cover here as the first alt to learn/debut each role, 2nd covers as the ones they’re currently working on/debuting, and then 3rd covers as anything out of their current three covers. Note that there’s no distinction in cover order (to our knowledge) between Courtney/Nicole as Seymour and Mallory/Nicole as Parr - I just added Nicole to the chart last so she got put after them.
I'll also note that it's very possible that cover orders (1st vs 2nd, most likely not who people didn't cover) changed early in the 2021 rehearsal process. In some cases this is potentially supported by some weird costume timelines. If just two people swapped, my bet would be on Mallory and Keirsten switching as Aragon/Parr first covers, but there's a couple other more complicated scenarios that could have happened.

of course the first preview had to have a giant technical issue within the first ten minutes of the show. i call that rannells disease since his first hairspray show (and broadway debut) had a giant technical issue too
