I'm going to invite these scientists to our house and yard. We have dozens and dozens of grackles at our feeders, making their grackle noises and bullying away our other "resident" birds. But in case they're right, here's an excerpt from an Audubon story:
As people have remade the American landscape, they’ve also shaped the fortunes of Common Grackles. The iridescent blackbirds flourished in the grain fields and pastures that European settlers cultivated after cutting down forests in the 18th and 19th centuries. By the 1970s, an estimated 150 million grackles inhabited a vast stretch from the East Coast to the Rocky Mountains, and today they are regulars across much of the continent. But the birds are disappearing—and no one knows why. A new tracking project aims to reveal what’s driving the mysterious decline.
Birders were among the first to gather evidence of the species’ troubling trajectory. In winter, grackles join Red-winged Blackbirds, European Starlings, and other birds in giant swirling congregations. Audubon’s annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC) long tallied roosts of up to tens of millions of birds. But in the past couple of decades, participants have rarely found flocks of more than a few million, says former CBC director Geoff LeBaron. Other blackbirds are in decline, too, but grackles have become noticeably absent from winter roosts.
According to CBC data, Common Grackles have been dropping at a rate of 3 percent per year, which amounts to a roughly 78 percent decline since 1970, says Tim Meehan, a quantitative scientist at Audubon. Meanwhile, federal Breeding Bird Surveys, which take place each summer, have found at least a 50 percent decline over the past half century. These data clearly indicate that there are fewer grackles across the board, Meehan says: “It’s a slam dunk.”
Michael Ward, a University of Illinois biologist, is one of the lead scientists delving into the conundrum. In 2021 he and his colleagues ruled out a hunch that grackles were failing to produce young: 60 percent of chicks in nearly 200 nests that he monitored fledged successfully, a higher rate than most songbirds achieve. Whatever is harming grackles is likely affecting adults, Ward says.
It’s possible the resourceful foragers, which eat everything from grubs to grains to garbage, are exposed to something dangerous in their diet. The researchers suspect insects and corn could be hazardous meals: Both may contain high levels of neonicotinoids—insecticides commonly applied to grains that have been linked to a decline in avian biodiversity in North America and beyond. Ward’s group plans to study what grackles eat on their breeding grounds to help determine how great a risk their food poses.
Meanwhile, the scientists want to better understand the challenges grackles face after leaving their breeding grounds. In addition to stringing up mist nets to snag birds in residential neighborhoods and at roost sites, Ward and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologist Kelly VanBeek set live traps baited with seed and mealworms at Southern Wisconsin Bird Alliance’s Goose Pond Sanctuary. They outfitted 14 Common Grackles with satellite tags throughout the summer and early fall of 2023 as the birds prepared to depart for their wintering grounds in the Southeast and southern Midwest.
On those journeys, VanBeek says, there are plenty of opportunities for the migrants to encounter other possible chemical culprits like fungicides, which may disrupt birds’ hormones and metabolism and are typically applied in the fall when grackles are on the move. Blackbirds’ penchant for foraging on farmland in large flocks makes them a target for culling as well. Between 1974 and 1992, the federal government killed up to 18 million Common Grackles in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama to reduce damage to agricultural crops. The pace has slowed, but the practice continues: Wildlife Services, a USDA division, killed more than 630,000 Common Grackles over the past decade. That’s on top of birds taken by farmers under FWS permits.

Noisy Silence are an Italian Alternative-Metalcore band born in 2018.
The lineup consists of Francesco Marson (guitar and vocals), Daniele Ferra (guitar and vocals), Nicolas Cechet (bass) and Luca Bernardis (drums).
REASON is the project with which the band presented itself in 2018, within which very different songs can be seen. The tracks included in their first EP contain personal emotions and messages of support and comfort, typical of the generation they represent.
After the promotion period of REASON, peppered with several live stages and festivals, the band decided to undertake the writing and production of new singles, of which ROPE is the first example.
This track published in 2020 represents a breaking point from the past for the members, as it begins a path projected towards a very specific genre, composed of "catchy" and captivating choruses that blend perfectly with rhythmic and sometimes aggressive verses.
Over the last year, Noisy Silence have organized and participated in many live dates in Italy together with various underground and non-underground bands.
The greatest satisfaction of 2023 was being able to participate in the Slam Dunk Festival, held in Rimini last June.
To date, Noisy Silence have recently released three new singles "Buried Inside", "Every Mistake", "Burn Away" and are working on the new album which will be released soon.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Slam Dunk 2024 - South
Another Slam Dunk is in the bag! Our third year in a row attending the South edition (fourth overall as we did the North in 2021) and another thoroughly enjoyable experience. This is the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Slam Dunk 2024 – South.
Another Slam Dunk is in the bag! Our third year in a row attending the South edition (fourth overall as we did the North in 2021) and another thoroughly enjoyable experience. Especially following the immense number of issues that the festival and its attendees experienced in 2023. Something the organisers appear to have learned from, as the improvements to the site were noticeable and appreciated…

Tumblr media
Ishiro Honda’s original 1954 Godzilla film defined a genre and invented a character who would go on to star in over 40 films and become a phenomenon across comics, toys, apparel, and games worldwide. In the franchise’s nearly 70 years of history, the “king of the monsters” has been reimagined multiple times from the grim creation of man’s scientific folly and vengeful ghost of Japan’s wartime dead, to a protector of the country and friend to children, to a harsh commentary on Japan’s response to Fukushima. An embodiment of Japan, its hope, and fears, Godzilla is also one of the country’s most identifiable ambassadors and as known as its other beloved popular culture exports including Pokemon, Hello Kitty, and Demon Slayer.
Tumblr media
Written and directed by award-winning director Takashi Yamazaki, Godzilla Minus One presents a new focus for the saga and is set in a devastated post-war Japan. It follows the country still recovering from the scars of the past as a new threat appears, and it asks the question of what happens when a disarmed and defenseless Japan encounters Godzilla. The film features an all-star cast including Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki.

Actor Ryunosuke Kamiki in Toho International's Godzilla Minus One.
“Godzilla is one of Japan’s most iconic creations, and Japan Society is honored to present Toho’s latest Godzilla film for the first time in New York” said Japan Society Director of Film Peter Tatara. “We’re eager to share with New York audiences this latest reinterpretation of Toho’s venerable series - a stark film set in the past but prescient for audiences today.”
Tumblr media
Japan Society will present a special public preview screening of Godzilla Minus One on November 28 following a year of major events which have included a preview screening of Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron, East Coast Premiere of The First Slam Dunk, North American Premiere of Shin Kamen Rider, North American Premiere of Blue Giant with composer Hiromi Uehara in-person, rare screening of Angel’s Egg with Yoshitaka Amano in-person, first major U.S. retrospective on director Shinji Somai, centennial retrospective on director Seijun Suzuki, and post-COVID relaunch of JAPAN CUTS: Festival of New Japanese Cinema, the largest contemporary Japanese film festival of its kind. A center for Japanese film in New York City since the 1970s, Japan Society has previously welcomed cinema greats including Akira Kurosawa, Toshiro Mifune, Hideko Takamine, and Nobuhiko Obayashi.

Actor Minami Hamabe in Toho International's Godzilla Minus One.
