Former England Cricketers Baffled at ECB for Calling Off Pakistan Tour [Video]
England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) cancelation of their tour to Pakistan has raised concerns about their hypocrisy with many English journalists and former cricketers questioning the ECB’s decision.

Renowned English Journalist Says England Canceled Pakistan Tour to Appease India [Video]
Former English men’s cricketer, Mark Butcher, along with former women’s cricketers, Ebony-Jewel Rainford-Brent and Charlotte Edwards questioned ECB’s reasoning behind their decision to call off the tour. Former cricketers said that the decision is disappointing and the reasoning did not make much sense.
The former cricketers discussed the issue at length in a video released on the official account of Sky Sports Cricket on Twitter.
Ebony-Jewel said, “Disappointment is the word that comes to my mind after looking at the statement issued by the ECB for the cancelation of its tour. It [England] screams of a team that has more power than the other side and have made a decision, not thinking about the impact.”
She added that ECB’s reason for excessive workload does not sit right as they were aware of the team’s schedule at the time they announced the tour of Pakistan.
Charlotte Edwards backed Ebony’s statement and added that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had helped ECB in their time of need but ECB has failed to respond to their gratitude. She said that she is disappointed for PCB as all of their hard work has gone to waste.

Mark Butcher said that the security arrangements in the country were never an issue as the PCB was offering presidential-level security. He added that it was safe for Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to travel to the country a few years ago and the same level of security would have been provided to England’s men’s and women’s teams.

Shane Warne wants MS Dhoni to play for London Spirit in The Hundred Tournament | ViralHai News [ad_1]
Retiring from international cricket, Australian spin legend Shane Warne now wants Mahendra Singh Dhoni to get on with the game and be a part of his team London Spirit in The Hundred Tournament next year.
Former India captain Dhoni, the two-time World Cup winner, retired on Saturday, leading to speculation about his future. Warne said he should give a hundred serious thoughts right now.
"I wonder if I can meet him next year for the London Spirit in a hundred. I can call to see if he wants to play at Lords. I'll get the money, MS !," Warne reported . Sky sports.
The Hundred is a 100-ball per-tournament for the England and Wales Cricket Board which was to be launched in June this year, but had to be postponed the following year due to the COVID-19 epidemic.
Fancy it, MS? 4@ShaneWarne Appeals to MS Dhoni on-air to join London Spirit in the next year pic.twitter.com/wSughElbex
- Sky Sports Cricket (@SkyCricket) August 15, 2020
Paying tribute to Dhoni, Warne said: "A brilliant cricketer. You think of some of the games he won for India, for his comeback.
"And you think of his captaincy, his leadership, he was a brilliant competitor and an amazing player. He would go down in history as an all-time great wicketkeeper-batsman.
"He had a peace of mind about him which was fantastic and he was always out of his team, be it India, Chennai Super Kings, whatever."
Dhoni is the only captain in the history of the game to have won all the ICC Trophies. Under him, India won the 2007 World Twenty20, 2010 and 2016 Asia Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy.
Former England captains Naseer Hussain and Michael Atherton also paid tribute to Dhoni, describing him as "the best white ball captain" and "great finisher".
Hussain said, "A calm, calm customer under pressure; a great finisher of a game, the game is not won until you dismiss Dhoni."
"I will remember hitting that six at the Wankhede Stadium to win the World Cup in 2011. He was a fantastic player," Atherton said.
Dhoni, who last played for India during the 2019 World Cup, has scored more than 17,000 international runs in 538 appearances. The 39-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman also won three IPL trophies with Chennai Super Kings.
Former Pakistan captain and fast bowler Wasim Akram praised his wide-ranging calm nature.
"I saw him when he started his cricketing career, his first tour in Pakistan (in 2006), he became a mega hit because of his long hair, his batting - he got runs on that tour (a first Test century), " said.
"As a captain, I always thought he was very calm, no one is in a position. And when you are as calm as a captain, you make the right decision. If you panic, the whole team Gets nervous and Dhoni was not one of them. "
"He was a treat to watch, as long as he wasn't playing against Pakistan," Akram quipped.
One-day captain Mithali Raj of the Indian women's team also congratulated her illustrious career.
"The man who immortalized the Jersey No.7, whose sharp mind and head gave him the tag of #CaptionCool, the man who fulfilled billions of Indian dreams by two World Cup trophies and who bid in his inept style. Congratulations. #MSDhoni an outstanding career, ”she tweeted.

STAT ATTACK: West Indies’ maiden tour of England, for a Test series was way back in 1928 under the captaincy of wicket-keeper batsman Robert Karl Nunes. A Percy Chapman-led England side thrashed the Windies 3-0 in the three-match series. Since then, the Windies have toured England 21 times and have emerged victorious on 8 occasions. The West Indies’ last tour to England was in 2017 under Jason Holder’s captaincy which the Caribbean side lost 1-2. The last Test series between the two teams was played in January-February last year in the Caribbean. The Holder-led side won the first Test by a huge margin of 381 runs and then pummeled the tourists by 10 wickets in the second Test. England won the third Test by 232 runs, but the Windies lifted the Wisden Trophy by winning the series 2-1 at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia. West Indies pacer Kemar Roach was adjudged Man of the Series. He claimed 18 wickets in 3 Tests (6 innings) at an average of 13.85. Roach will be eager to produce an encore when he grabs the red cherry in Southampton. BIG OPPORTUNITY FOR STOKES: Meet the England skipper Ben Stokes and his deputy Jos Buttler for the Southampton Test. England’s 2019 World Cup-winning hero Stokes will be leading the home team in the opening Test in place of regular-captain Joe Root, who has taken leave to be with his wife for the birth of their second child. Stokes has never led England in Tests and will be seen in the leadership role for the first time in his career.

The wait is finally over as international cricket action is set to resume after almost three months after the COVID-19 pandemic brought the gentlemen’s game to a standstill in March. Hello and welcome to the Live coverage of the opening Test of the three-match series between England and the West Indies.
It’s not as bad as it looks 🤞😂Good morning from the Ageas Bowl! 🏏 https://t.co/m64Q5uxpT3
— England Cricket (@englandcricket) 1594193783000
It seem a long time since international cricket was played, although it’s been just a few months. But the volume of live action we are used to makes it seems like it’s been ages since a bowler ran in and a batsman took strike. The COVID-19 pandemic had put a stop to all sports, and cricket was no different. But the wait is going to get over today. The contest between bat and ball returns in a bio-secure bubble at the Ageas Bowl in England, where the hosts take on the West Indies to set the ball rolling with the first Test of the three-match series. And we, here at Timesofindia.com, are happily back to be with you and paint all the action in words, as it unfolds in Southampton. West Indies arrived in England well ahead of the scheduled start of the tour, as they had to go through a quarantine period before stepping onto the field. It has all gone smoothly so far and ECB would hope the bio-secure bubble remains impregnable. Some significant changes to start with: 1. There will be no crowd and the stands will be empty. The government hasn’t allowed that. 2. England will have a new captain, only for the first Test, though, as of now. Joe Root is away as he is going to be a Daddy again; and in his absence, the ECB has handed over the Test reins in the talented hands of Ben Stokes. 3. The bowlers can’t use saliva to shine the red cherry. That practrice has been prohibited by the ICC as a safety measure against COVID. And there’s lot more, plus details on the above. So without much ado, then, here’s the Match Preview: The wait is finally over as international cricket action is set to resume after almost three months after the COVID-19 pandemic brought the gentlemen’s game to a standstill in March. England will host West Indies in a three Test series. The first Test begins in Southampton on Wednesday (July 8). The second and the third Tests will be played at the same venue – the Old Trafford in Manchester. Both the captains, Ben Stokes (interim England captain) and Jason Holder (West Indies) are ready with their team sheets, the fans are waiting eagerly to tune in to the action on their television sets, the Ageas Bowl is decked up, and both the teams have their eyes set on the trophy. The countdown has begun for the umpires ‘let’s play’. This series will be very keenly watched by everyone around the world. After all it is the first series which will be played with the new restrictions in place. No crowds, a saliva ban and limited celebrations. THE SALIVA BAN – A CHALLENGE FOR THE BOWLERS The ICC has banned the use of saliva on the ball to counter the coronavirus threat. The international cricket body has confirmed interim changes to its playing regulations. “If a player does apply saliva to the ball, the umpires will manage the situation with some leniency during an initial period of adjustment for the players, but subsequent instances will result in the team receiving a warning,” according to an ICC release. “A team can be issued up to two warnings per innings but repeated use of saliva on the ball will result in a 5-run penalty to the batting side. Whenever saliva is applied to the ball, the umpires will be instructed to clean the ball before play recommences,” the release said. Though bowlers and fielders can apply sweat on the ball, the ban on saliva usage will perhaps make it quite difficult for the bowlers to get movement in the air. The star pacers of England and West Indies – James Anderson and Kemar Roach – are known for their swing and it will be interesting to see how they get movement in the air without using saliva. Former England spinner Monty Panesar recently said that he expects Anderson to be the first bowler to swing the ball without saliva. CLOSED DOORS, NO FANS, NO HIGH-FIVES Cricket without fans, who would have thought that this day would come. But, the series between England and West Indies will be played behind closed doors, with no fans in the stadiums and with multiple health protocols in place. There will be players, umpires and referees, but no fans to cheer their favourite players. There will be no high-fives or hugs or head rubs while celebrating a wicket or when a batsman crosses a milestone. The practice match between Team Stokes and Team Buttler saw James Anderson celebrating, after taking a wicket, with elbow dabs. That will be the new normal during the Test series too. WEST INDIES IN ENGLAND: STAT ATTACK West Indies’ maiden tour of England, for a Test series was way back in 1928 under the captaincy of wicket-keeper batsman Robert Karl Nunes. Roach will be eager to produce and encore when he grabs the red cherry in Southampton. INTERIM CAPTAIN BEN STOKES England’s 2019 World Cup-winning hero Ben Stokes will be leading the home team in the opening Test in place of regular-captain Joe Root, who has taken leave to be with his wife for the birth of their second child. Stokes has never led England in Tests and will be seen in the leadership role for the first time in his career when the first Test begins on July 8. Stokes is one of the key players in the England team who has the ability to turn a game with his match-winning knocks and magical bowling spells. It will be interesting to see how impressive he will be as captain. PREDICTIONS According to former England cricketer Roland Butcher, the Windies might have an upper hand going into the series. “First of all, the West Indies have really a good chance of winning a series. Let’s not forget, England in England are a phenomenal side. They have played no cricket so far this year. So, everyone started afresh. For West Indies, they have a high chance of winning the series. Their bowling is amazing but their batting should be of high quality,” Butcher told Timesofindia.com in an exclusive interview. “The Windies batsmen need to at least put 300 plus totals in order to have a chance. Their bowling will do the rest. Put 300 plus total and England will be under pressure. That’s what Windies should do. In England, spinners play a big role when the pitch is already in use or some cricket has already been played on that. Since, this will be a fresh start, spinners might struggle. Spinners are not going to be effective,” Butcher, who played 3 Tests and 3 ODIs for England, said. On the other hand, former England spinner Monty Panesar said the series will be a contest between the Windies bowlers and the England batsmen. “The weakness, where it lies since Alastair Cook’s retirement is England’s batting. Their top six isn’t that great. I think it’s a great opportunity for the likes of the top six to get some runs and show that, but then Windies bowling is strong. Windies bowling is much stronger than their batting. They’ve got Kemar Roach. He is an amazing bowler. He has done well in conditions in England. He will be a key player in the Windies team,” Panesar said. “Holder as captain and a player is really good. He is a good all-rounder and his bowling is very handy in these conditions. He can get extra bounce and score runs as well. So, I think it will be Windies bowlers vs England batters. With Joe Root not there, it could be a perfect opportunity for West Indies to really stamp their authority,” the former spinner said. England Squad: Ben Stokes (c), James Anderson, Jofra Archer, Dominic Bess, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler (wk), Zak Crawley, Joe Denly, Ollie Pope, Dom Sibley, Chris Woakes and Mark Wood. West Indies squad: Jason Holder (c), Jermaine Blackwood, Nkrumah Bonner, Kraigg Brathwaite, Shamarh Brooks, John Campbell, Roston Chase, Rahkeem Cornwall, Shane Dowrich, Shannon Gabriel, Chemar Holder, Shai Hope, Alzarri Joseph, Raymon Reifer, Kemar Roach
