When I was an active docent and volunteer in the desert, and hiked all over the place, whenever I spotted the remains of a mylar balloon, I went for it, shoved it in my backpack and brought it back to properly dispose of it. Those things are vicious killers of wildlife.

Excerpt from this story from the New York Times:

Balloons released in the sky don’t go to heaven. They often end up in oceans and waterways, where they’re 32 times more likely to kill seabirds than other types of plastic debris. Despite this, humans like to release them en masse, be it to celebrate a loved one’s life or a wedding, or to reveal the gender of a baby.

The practice is on the verge of becoming illegal in Florida, where the legislature has joined a growing number of states to ban the intentional release of balloons outdoors. The Florida ban is expected to be signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and would take effect July 1.

Florida is at the forefront of a dizzying and contentious array of statewide bans, outlawing lab grown meat, certain books from school libraries and classrooms, and most abortions after six weeks. But the balloon ban is rare for garnering widespread bipartisan support. It was championed by environmentalists and sponsored by two Republican lawmakers from the Tampa Bay area, Linda Chaney, a state representative and Nick DiCeglie, a state senator.

“Balloons contribute to the increase in microplastic pollution which is harmful to every living thing including humans, polluting our air and drinking water,” Ms. Chaney wrote in an email.

“My hope is that this bill changes the culture, making people more aware of litter in general, including balloons,” she said.

Ms. Chaney said she first heard about the perils of balloon debris in 2020. Aquatic animals often mistake balloons for jellyfish and feel full after eating them, essentially starving from the inside out. Ribbons affixed to balloons entangle turtles and manatees. Balloons also pose a threat to land animals. In her research, Ms. Chaney learned about a pregnant cow that died after ingesting a balloon while grazing. The unborn calf died too.

The bill closes a loophole in an existing Florida law that allowed for the outdoor release of up to nine balloons per person in any 24-hour period, a provision that critics say didn’t achieve the goal of reducing marine trash.

The new legislation makes it clear that balloons can pose an environmental hazard, supporters say. It equates intentionally releasing a balloon filled with a gas lighter than air with littering, a noncriminal offense that carries a fine of $150. The ban also applies to outdoor releases of any balloons described by manufacturers as biodegradable.

The ban does not restrict the sale of balloons by party suppliers or manufacturers; they could still be used indoors or as decorations outdoors if properly secured.

The Lonely Worldbuilder Volume I: Vicaria

Welcome to the Hazard Desert, a dusty valley of steam-powered gunslingers, vicious capitalist overlords and all the humble folk in between. This, is my steampunk/western setting, set mainly in a great big dusty valley known as the Great Vicarian Dust Bowl, or colloquially as the Hazard Desert. Vicaria is the greater nation that the Hazard Desert sits in, but realistically there's not much else to the nation. Or, at least not much more important to the nation, for one reason only, the steam crystal. The steam crystal is formed from the highly compressed steam that bursts out of geysers deep under the red sands of the Hazard. These crystals, have very interesting uses, namely their tendency to ignite quite easily, creating a burst of steam. So, these crystals have used in the manufacturing of weapons, revolvers, repeaters, rifles, pistols, shotguns as well as vehicles such as the monowheel: a single-wheeled steam-powered bike, the steam balloon: an enhanced hot air balloon, and much later in their use, to raise a city into the sky. Valve, the capital of Vicaria, soars over the desert. A set of colossal steam vents below the city jet out huge vaporous clouds of steam into the sky. It looks like a steampunk version Attilan, the inhuman city from Marvel (just search the name up and look at image's you'll know what I mean). In order for Valve to continue its flight over the desert, it requires fuel. A constant stream of steam crystals, which come from the many mining towns of the desert. So, Valve circuits the mining towns, hovering over them each for a few days per year, collecting all of the crystals mined over the previous year, before departing to the next town. One of such mining towns, is where my current D&D campaign using this setting takes place. Juggertown, what was once the premier crystal mining town, now lies as a husk of forgotten dreams of false riches. A few decades ago, the town was known as Crystal Rock, and being situated next to the crystal-rich Cogwright Mines, the mining business was booming. Especially in the middle of the Great Steam War, a civil war on the precipice of steam-combustion weapon invention, and a time where the demand for crystals was heavy. However, at the end of the war, the leftover steam-powered tanks known as juggernauts, were repurposed into mining vehicles, bringing terrifying efficiency to the mining trade as the giant drills mounted on them harvested crystals at incredible paces. So, as the constant trundling hum of juggernaut treads became a mainstay in Crystal Rock, and the rock that it was named after was drilled into extinction, the settlement garnered a new name, Juggertown. As a final part on this setting, here are some of the characters my players made. Marrow - Fighter - Gunslinger A gunslinger with a pair of mechanical arms and a very rebellious attitude towards the Valvean Government. Marrow was a former goon for the Mayor of Juggertown but had a harsh change of heart and is an anarchist against the state. Dr. Nick Copperfield - Cleric - Life Domain The former town doctor of Juggertown now relegated to backstreet operations in the shantytown tents of the town outskirts. Dr. Copperfield was outcompeted by a new pharmacy backed by the seemingly-infinite funds of a Valvean businessman that seems to have ill intentions with his business in the town. Ahusaka - Sorcerer - Storm Sorcery An outcast whose body is covered in steam-crystal growths that give him innate control over the steam that powers many contraptions in the desert. As a result of Ahu's affliction, he was raised in his village until around the age of twelve, before being cast out into the desert. Ahu was rescued by a bandit, who took Ahu back to his town and, taking pity on the boy, welcomed Ahu into his gang, raising him an outlaw.

Research: Sustainable Digital Art Installations

A creative concept I wanted to implement at Northshore is an sustainable digital art installation. I find myself pondering the dearth of interactive digital art installations in Brisbane. It struck me how such a vibrant city could lack a space where technology and creativity converge to captivate and inspire.

Before listing down the places I researched, I want to emphasise what a digital art installation is. Digital installation art is a large field of activity that takes various shapes. Some resemble video installations, particularly large-scale works that use projections and live video capture. The theme of the digital art installation I want to implement in Northshore is a sustainable theme. Here are some examples

Solar Equation by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Solar Equation is a large-scale public art work featuring an accurate reproduction of the Sun that is 100 million times smaller than the real thing. The Light in Winter Festival in Melbourne commissioned the piece, which features the world's largest spherical balloon, custom-manufactured for the purpose, suspended over Federation Square and animated with five projectors. Solar animation on balloons is created using real-time mathematical algorithms that recreate the turbulence, flares, and sunspots found on the Sun's surface. This results in a continually changing display that never repeats itself, offering spectators a glimpse of the beautiful phenomena that may be seen on the solar surface but have only just been discovered by astronomers. Powered entirely by solar energy, Solar Equation engages viewers by allowing them to manipulate the sun's appearance through a touchscreen interface.

2. Light Barrier by Kimchi and Chips: Kimchi and Chips' work Light Barrier (2014) creates phantoms of light in the air by crossing millions of calibrated beams. The light installation generates floating visual objects that move through space as they do in time. Impressionist painters' style was driven by a fascination with natural light; they experimented with new colours and the passage of time. Kimchi and Chips' exploration of digital light explores a new visual mechanic, with their installation expanding the visual language of space and light.

3. Aqueous by Jen Lewin:

Aqueous is a series of interactive LED platforms that create light trails. During the day, the sculpture changes colour and reflects the sky. At night, AQUEOUS shines with full lit interactivity, engaging groups in a constantly changing world.

AQUEOUS is one of the first pattern-based sculptures created at this scale, inspired by the symmetry seen in natural systems. The sculpture is made up of hundreds of interactive modular platforms developed from the Golden Ratio and can be erected in a variety of configurations. Each platform is controlled by code provided by the artist, allowing them to feel human interaction independently while also linking together to produce interconnected paths of light effects.

4. Waterlicht by Daan Roosegaarde: is a dream landscape about the power and poetry of water. As a virtual flood, WATERLICHT shows how high the water level could reach. WATERLICHT is a collective experience to remind us of the importance of water innovation and the impact of climate change.

As promised, here are the wip/pencil sketches/designs of some of my machines from the short story The Dream and the Weaver alongside quotes from the book :)

The Dreamer model is nothing more than an artist’s palette. There is no A.I., only chasms of data storage. Bright colors smear hollow ribs. Red from a balloon vanishing in a polluted sky, yellow for children’s laughter. Behind silver cheeks drips nightmares, gentle as rain upon windows.

She is not unique. Thousands of chambers house versions of this metal woman and her cradle. Butcher hooks tear into her back and chains wrap her belly so she soars above the pod. A wire fringe covers her glowing eyes.

The Weaver lays curled within, its six arms encircling its wheels. Wires knotted into dreadlocks fan out. Silver skin speckled with inky freckles play at individuality. Such things are needed to tell these mecha apart. Their faces are hollowed out, replaced with dreamcatcher strands. The Weaver knows what to do. It curls its remaining fingers around its face. A soft twangy noise, stilted at first, forms a basic tune. The Weaver plays itself like an instrument. Do flies hear such a song, when they come too near the web?

It started with a contract. Someone who wanted dental included in their employer-provided healthcare. Fine, the company said, but give us two hours of sleep in exchange. Two hours working instead of dreaming. Don’t be concerned.

The worker’s skull is opened. A tiny metal Cricket is installed, right beside the amygdala.

The Weaver sits in the center, eel-like wires latching upon our circle of cradles as we crawl inside them. The mecha’s face is a porcelain mask, stiffly smiling as his head twists, painted eyes meeting mine, as handsome as a fantasy. My teeth catch on my lip. There’s a squirming in my throat. An aunt looks at me, her eyes framed with ink sticky lashes and dusty sleep greed. I roll over, cheeks burning. I don’t want to share, I think frantically. They’ll grimace. Warn me to unpick it from my stitching, as if it can easily be kicked into the shadows.

Arcastein: A town that lacks big building. Not due to the crisis that exists but due to the excess amounts of Airships that are there. This country is known for manufacturing airships all around the world. The majority of the area is Steampunk aesthetic while some areas use helium to make a different type of airship. Fast moving air vehicles are prohibited here from traveling.

But due to being a single mother, she had to take Alcyon with her along as well. She was one of the sparks that made Alcyon want to pilot in the first place. After an accident, She suggested that Alcyon goes to flight school so that the accident wouldn’t happen again and that she would be an official pilot. She knew that she raised her daughter successfully.

One day where her mother was absent, she always wanted to pilot a blimp for herself, so she decided to borrow one of her mother’s blimps and took a joyride. Her mother was very worried about her daughter and the missing blimp. Good thing she was able to land it very safely. Her mother then suggested for her to go to flight school to become an official pilot so that the same scenario wouldn’t happen again. Alcyon was able to handle different types of aircrafts especially during unexpected emergencies.

Scarlett Sinner: She is the more mature of the twin sisters, she is more planned, more focused on expensive jewelry, antiques, paintings, and priceless artifacts. She has a gun to protect herself.

Eliza Henrietta Bray was one of the many misc characters that Liam have created. While no one is looking around, Liam secretly hugs this character sheet for long period of hours and thought of going on adventures with her. Because of his thoughts and feelings, she had developed a crush on Liam and would sometimes randomly hug Liam out of nowhere. Also, due to her airship getting lots of punctures, she has developed a hobby of sewing.

Info about her airship: Her airship is very reinforced due to many crashes she has experienced in her life, you can see many patches to her balloon part from the punctures of the past, but they never leak out. it functions almost like a hot air balloon instead of an actual blimp (Kinda)

He sometimes took care of Nicholas when he was at a young age. Sky rarely rides a blimp with his friend  Nicholas. He also repairs blimps as well.

Story: When Nicholas finally became a pilot, Sky had an excess number of blimps that weren’t sold so he helped Nicholas start a blimp yard to help sell the blimps. Eventually, Nicholas started to offer blimp rides to people who want to ride in one but can’t afford one for themselves. Eventually, the two both became very close friends.
