opinion blabber
my opinion on the skullgirls censorship is probably considered "woke" but i'm kind of glad they censored specific bits. censorship is an awful thing in media, i get it, but the armbands were NOT it. i'm sorry to those who are complaining and protesting the change, but here's my take: If the devs are uncomfortable with what they made back in 2012, they have the right to change it. What stood in 2012 probably doesn't stand as well today, and it sucks, but it is what it is.
have a nice night, gang. please don't dox me on here for having an opinion.

One of the things I've always insisted when it comes to Skullgirls is that it's always been on its deathbed way before this happened. This doesn't really ensure anything at this point. Last I heard was that the EVO thing that Skullgirls get was just pity EVOs which is sad in and of itself. Should they have changed things that was there in the game for over a decade? No, absolutely not. Does it make sense? To me, with everything taken into account, yeah. If this was done to appease some ESG rating, then why now? The game was on its deathbed for years. YEARS! I suspect the mobile game was the only thing keeping the game going and some finances here and there.
I don't know the player count of Skullgirls Mobile but for the PC one on Steam, the player count was always under 500. It was somewhere around 150 before the update and it's about 180 average. I'd imagine a lot was reminded that this game even existed. The new characters never really generated enough interest for it to be back to its former glory...if it even had a former glory.
The point is that I refute the idea that Skullgirls is "dead" because it has been on its deathbed for years and this incident is just like all the other things done for Skullgirls. Would be nice if they'll undo this update, though. I still reckon that won't change anything much, playerbase nor popularity.
Damn, what has happened for this game to be consigned to such a fate? Is it gacha and Vtubers? I blame gacha and Vtubers. This game should've been taken care of. Someone should've done something to keep the game relevant in a good way that doesn't involve tampering with the art pieces nor the sprites of the game. In hindsight, when they did their Webtoon that should've stated that they're desperate for attention. That Webtoon's been on hiatus for months now, almost a year at this point. Any interest in that has probably waned cause the story's not too bad but it's nothing impressive either. It just is.

Going against the very people that built up the empire you live in is a dick move. It has been done now, though.
I'd consider myself as one of the fucks who're left to pick up the pieces. The game has not been relevant for years even before this.
I seem to recall that KiA called this when Mike Z was ousted from his company and Future Club was formed.
It was a thing back in 2019 but that was that.
The game hasn't been relevant since. According to Bounding Into Comics, the game had a playerbase and growth of 200 per year. With the update that became 150.
I don't know about you but this is a step down and most likely, even if nothing was done and the censorship was not enacted, the growth of the game isn't going to be affected. Marie's on her way. So what?
The world's moved on. And I'm just here along with a few others to try to pick up the pieces.
I do wonder if I have the right to call myself a fan for I was just a squirt when this entire ordeal was being made. The crowdfunding, the support, the right conditions.
Maybe not. As far as definitions go, I'm just a filthy casual.
Sad for those who spent their money and time on the game for all that just to blow away. I feel for them. I too know what it's like to blow money away and have my expectations crumble, exclusively in that order.
Skullgirls tried to get to EVO and they succeeded once. They did this the second time around and I wonder why EVO?
There's only like a handful of the SG players around. Censorship or not, the ones who'd be watching Skullgirls will be a total of 5. Give or take. It's a guess.
The censorship worries me. I am aware of how some online would now say that Parasoul's panty shots would be objectification. That Cerebella not having a bra to stop her breasts from bouncing is also objectification.
The logical next step is for them to quell any ideas of objectification.
Miss Fortune might get her costume changed to her Webtoon one.
What a world.
But life goes on, I guess. Life goes on.
I do hope someone can pick up the pieces and do something like Skullgirls again. Horny and more horny. Who knows?
I never played Skullgirls as much, but the reaction I've seen in response to the rightly pissed-off customers over the digital art book getting censored is the ol "Lol, only perverts and chuds are mad about it. Who gives a shit."
But they forgot one truth about an IP that has a horny fanbase that can make a push as big as how Skullgirls was once a dream to a worldwide hit because of ZONE and whatnot.
You do NOT backstab your supporting fans to this scale and scope. It's basic business etiquette, tho I guess ESG money must be worth more than common sense.
TLDR: Backstabbing your supportive fan-artists no matter how horny they may be to chickenshit devs and investors like that is a stupid business move!
It's really annoying seeing a bunch of braindead philistine npcs going around with the copypaste 'stay mad pedo nazis' as if that addresses any of the actual grievances fans have with censorship.
There's no love for its base with this decision, they don't care about preserving artistic integrity or respecting what made the thing so popular in the first place, they care about watering it down to their particular standards and tastes, purifying it of filth and flavour, all the while claiming that only when the art is "respectful", after it's safely altered for your protection, the protection of women, children, minorities, whateverelsewecanthrowinthereOK, now FINALLY, it is deserving of the privilege of being allowed to exist 😒 ok sure w.e man

Seeing the Skullgirls censorship is really disheartening.
Even worse than the in-game alterations, going into the digital art book and editing concept art is a scummy thing to do.
As an artist, I detest censorship. It’ll never stop. If I don’t stand against it, it’ll come for me too one day.
And it’ll come for what you love too as well. Always remember that.

I’m definitely gonna make a stance on this, I’m on the side of Skullgirls fans who are angry about the censorship going on in the game.
If people were mad about the boobs and panty shots, maybe they shouldn’t be playing the boobs-and-panty-shots game. Just a thought.
#discourse#That’s not even going into the Big Band censorship and the stuff with Parasoul and the Black Egrets#You don’t HAVE to like or be comfortable with depictions like that but it’s so much more insulting to censor it my dudes#Like honestly Skullgirls wasn’t my thing; I have massive respect for it as a passion-project fighting game#But damn I wouldn’t demand that they change anything

The Skullgirls censorship discourse is getting increasingly annoying to see because so many people are treating it with zero nuance.
They either treat it with everything that was censored is good or everything that was censored is bad.
Like obviously attempting to censor the nazi imagery and fanservice of underage characters is nothing but a good thing. But I have my criticisms.
That one Big Band scene being removed was very unnecessary, lessens the impact of his motivations and wasn't even racist contextually. Some of the attempts at re-coloring Filia's panties in alternate palettes to draw less attention to them makes it slightly worse imo. Adding more tentacles to censor the skin reveal of Double's captives looks more horny than what it was originally. Cerebela's clothes not being torn when Double pins her against a wall makes the defeat less impactful; they did have a whole fight beforehand. The removal of concept art seems strange as that art isn't even easily viewable in-game (right?).
Ah but unless I voice my criticisms/displeasure with the censorship some loud people will mark me as a pedophile or a nazi unless I fully explain every issue I have.
But on the other hand, if I defend certain changes I DO agree with I'm suddenly labeled as supportive of censorship of all kinds. I'm against artistic integrity now.
Look, Skullgirls is very commonly seen as some horny game for immature people, which isn't a good look for what is also one the best fighting games ever made with really cool original characters too. The dev's decision to try to reduce inappropriate sexual themes and remove itself from hate speech is a good decision. I may disagree with some of their methods, but it's not like they're removing the mature themes present in the game.
Besides, it's STILL Skullgirls, one of the best fighting games ever made. Everyone leaving negative reviews aren't even real fans. I completely agree with the devs hiding those reviews. NO ONE bought this game because Big Band had a voiceline hitting on his opponent (who could be a child). NO ONE bought this game because of the nazi imagery. NO ONE bought this game for the concept art. YOU SHOULD feel stupid if you left a negative review for Skullgirls just because of this update.
Ah but unless I write a whole essay I can't criticise the censorship either. Ugh.

So, a little truth here. I avoided the Know your Meme comment section of Skullgirls because it gets fucking toxic when topics like censorship come up but oh, boy did I find a fucking diamond in there.
I will just share them here and let it do the talking:
I recommend the ones by Ten Shadows, that is just so damn profound. I teared up because I get it now.
Also here's one for nuance's sake
#skullgirls#skullgirls censorship#comments from know your meme#profound#nuance#in hindsight everything the nuanced one says seems to be quite low in charisma but hey#they're not condescending at the least unlike Dede

honestly the skullgirls censorship is 100% okay, good even.
It really isn't.
Censorship is a constantly advancing tide and without pushback it will eventually come for the artists and art you like. The only way you can stop this is to stand against censorship, even of art you dislike or find distasteful.
There are only specific cases where art has to be curtailed and it has nothing to do with offense or discomfort. It has everything to do with if real people are being harmed. And even then, these aren't clear cut because what constitutes 'harm' is a scale.
This isn't even touching on the fact that censoring and changing the paid digital artbook is extremely scummy. Remember, people bought the art book for the guest art (removed) and concept art (censored). It highlights the problem with digital media and how companies can (and will) erase things in acts of revisionism at the cost of accuracy, the consumer and authenticity.
And then there's the fact that Skullgirls was crowdfunded. People funded the game based on expectations; expectations that are being violated. Stretch goals that were met and added to the game are now being removed. How is that appropriate?
The Skullgirls debacle is bad. It is bad from a censorship point of view. It is bad from a media history point of view. It is bad from a consumer point of view.
As an artist and someone concerned with good consumer practices, this is an abhorrent situation.
Nothing about it is good. Please, sit down and reconsider your position. Saying "censorship is good" should be an immediate red flag that you are not one of the good guys.

Regarding Skullgirls
Times change. People change. Games change. It may be for the better. Sometimes it is not. It's bewildering how I used to be such a fan of it. But then the industry turned its back on me. They don't want me anymore. I'm no longer wanted for my love for games. I need to hate something to belong now. Shoutout to LailoTV - please check the contents here for more details: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wL18fryeqUg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5PJL8VMxDo Shoutout to Vara Dark - Dark Titan Media - please check the contents here for more details: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=On8jCbYBNVw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lq8ZSrWdCGM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5670GKh2ss Oh and one more thing - Mike Z was right. He may of been a dick to some people but he was our dick.

Thoughts on skull girl censorship that the game devs made?
I never played the game but from what I seen it’s censoring panty shots which I personally don’t care for.
Like it’s kinda weird they are censoring certain characters. Like here they hide the cleavage but not the obvious panty shot and chick on left has zero changes to it
Again certain parts were censored. So imo if they gonna censor just do it all the way. Not select different areas especially if sexual content is the issue.
( which if it’s rated T for sexual imagery trying bring that down to an E ain’t helping lol)
