Yet more gifts of Appalachian summer.
I've been on a mission to catalogue as many of Central Appalachia's summer wildflowers and berries as possible for an online project I'm starting up. Above is the haul from yesterday, including the stunning orange-fringed orchid (Platanthera ciliaris), a grand summer orchid of Appalachia's wet seeps and meadows. Downy rattlesnake plantain (Goodyera pubescens), another of our summer-blooming orchids, may not be quite as showy, but its intricately-patterned leaves are quite striking. Turk's-cap lily (Lilium superbum) is also in bloom in our local wet meadows and swamps. It's distinguished from its close cousin Canada lily by more strongly recurved petals and a green, star-like pattern in the center of its flowers. A single Turk's cap lily can produce dozens of flowers from its rangy stems. At home in moist woodland edges and streambanks, summer phlox (Phlox paniculata), sometimes also referred to as fall phlox and garden phlox, produces loads of gorgeous pink or white flowers from mid-July through September. Because this phlox is commonly planted in gardens nowadays, it's hard to know if plants in the wild are true natives or escapees.

Been a bit since I’ve shown my cookie run ocs, so here’s a new one! Their name is Skullcap Cookie, and they’re the gravekeeper for the Dessert Kingdom, as well as the primary caretaker of its Memorial Gardens.
They love both life and death, constantly fascinated by everything it entails. They could easily talk about specific blooming times of cold weather flowers and then switch to which parts of a cookie decay faster than the rest.

“My religious trauma isn’t that bad.”
Bro you got into acting which is something you’ve always wanted to get into; but you‘ve been on the verge of throwing up and shitting yourself for the past twelve hours because you held one (1) prop gun for maybe fifteen minutes and now you’re spiraling because you’re worried about losing your purity because violent movies are Evil and Satanic (even though you watch them literally all the time and write graphic whump).
#exjw#religious trauma#I wanted to eat my couscous and I could only eat 1/4 of it :(#actors of tumblr#Eheheheh I’m an actor so I can use that tag#No but seriously it feeeeeels liiiiiike I’m seventeeen agaiiin#I haven’t been this debilitatingly anxious since before I left the cult#Ugh god gonna have some skullcap when I get home#Or maybe sleepytime tea so I can put myself out of my misery#Drinking to avoid my feelings… but the beverage is Bigelow Wildflower Tea shsbdjsjsjsk

I snuck in a late spring hike in Cheat River Canyon yesterday, before the dreaded heat dome builds in early next week. Between Brazil's Pantanal going up in flames and the massive heat spikes in North America and elsewhere, I wonder what will be left of this planet's beautiful wild places in twenty to thirty years. For now, I celebrate and cherish every day the glorious diversity of living things that nature has gifted us. This includes the magnificent poke milkweed (Asclepias exaltata), a shade tolerant member of the dogbane family, which feeds and hosts a great many of those living things, such as the extraordinary Himmelman's plume moth (Geina tenuidactylus). Or the comical-looking rock harlequin (Corydalis sempervirens), which clings to the rocky outcrops of the canyon. And the exquisite downy skullcap (Scutellaria incana), a gregarious summer mint that associates with wild bergamot and tall thimbleweed at forest edges. And how about the peculiar dangling flowers of Indian cucumber (Medeola virginiana) or the pale, ghostly stems and bracts of the parasitic Indian pipe (Monotropa uniflora), just now emerging from the forest floor? In a couple of weeks, the rhododendron bloom will start in the canyon and summer will be in full swing.
