sounds like a good podcast for people interested in brains and also wanting to feel validated in their choice to never do any sports ever

It’s a REALLY good podcast, but might be best avoided by anyone who 1) has sustained a few concussions or repeated subconcussive impacts AND 2) is also prone to anxiety. It’s also extremely sad. I’ve read about brain injuries before so had an idea of what to expect, but The Beautiful Brain genuinely upset me. 

(I’m also reading Admissions: A Life In Brain Surgery, which inspires a bit of existential dread regarding brains, but not so much that I’ve had to quit reading it for my own peace of mind. The dread from Admissions is more general, in the vein of ‘no matter what you do, your identity is still the construct of an extremely delicate blob of fat. You are a ghost generated by a lump of pate.’)

Reading/listening to anything on sports injuries in general can be kind of a wild ride though, because a lot of it is like ‘brains? we’re still figuring out the specifics, but don’t hit them. Knees? Are an enigma. Necks? Necks are so sketchy that someone can easily choke you to death by accident. The human back? A complete shitshow. Spines? Look, just... just keep spines away from a rugby pitch, and learn the signs of Cauda Equina syndrome’.

Swimming seems safe though! Can’t fall off anything, can’t get hit in the head by anything, there’s no impact on the joints... You just have to not drown.

He is the least valid of them all and that is what makes him so relatable.

(And in recent DC movies he is such a mood. You can see that he just got out of a depressive episode and eats vegetables and what not. He is so positive! And life hits him hard and he is like “ok, I will just squeeze in another yoga class into my routine” and it will be fine.

It will likely not be fine, but he is such an inspiration.)

(And his usual fuck-up routine in comics is also a sight to behold.)
