The list of the fastest and the highest known flights ever recorded by the Lockheed Blackbird family

Which member of the Blackbird family was the faster and which one reached the highest altitude?

The iconic SR-71 Blackbird spy plane is known for being the official record holder for the fastest jet-powered, piloted aircraft of all time.

The SR-71 was based on another Mach 3, high altitude reconnaissance aircraft, the A-12 Oxcart.

Another Blackbird, the YF-12 high-altitude, Mach 3 interceptor was developed from the A-12 to defend against supersonic bombers. The YF-12 was never adopted by the military as an operational aircraft. The YF-12 too was, however, a precursor to the SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance plane.

At this point, one might ask which member of the Blackbird family was the faster and which one reached the highest altitude.

Linda Sheffield Miller (Col Richard (Butch) Sheffield’s daughter, Col. Sheffield was an SR-71 Reconnaissance Systems Officer), who runs Habubrats Facebook page, may have some answers.

She explained to The Aviation Geek Club:

“The A-12, also known as Oxcart, altitude and speed are unofficial because the A-12 remained top-secret until 1982. Ken Collins, A-12 pilot and SR -71 pilot [who also flew with Col. Sheffield] has revealed an altitude of 94,000 feet!

“The maximum design cruise speed was Mach 3.2. The speed was limited by structural temperature restrictions.

Actually the Blackbird’s incredible speed enabled it to gather intelligence in a matter of a few seconds while streaking across unfriendly skies. Thanks to these astonishing flight characteristics, the Blackbirds have set numerous speed and altitude records during their career.

HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY INDIE CHRISTMAS: 4TH AND FINAL VOLUME - THE BUMPER TRACKLIST REVEALED

As I write this, the tracklist for volume 4 stands at a bumper 65 tracks, with another one or two last-minute additions still possible. As you may know this is 50 more tracks than I had in mind when I decided, very late in the day, to curate one last volume. The response has been incredible. All the more so, given that I had just about exhausted the main source for tracks - Christmas Underground and the associated links to many other blogs/podcasts/Christmas shows found there.

I still turned first to Christmas Underground, as the archive there is so comprehensive I reasoned that I must have missed a few gems and also there may have been further additions (there were and I nabbed some of them!). The seam at bandcamp was very nearly exhausted - I've listened to every Indie Xmas compilation on there ten times over - but there were one or two newer tracks that I managed to get this time around. I also tried again with bands that had not responded to requests on the first three volumes and struck it lucky 4th time of trying with a half-dozen artists. Then I decided to listen to Christmas shows on Mixcloud - the Andy Von Pip shows brought many Xmas songs to my attention that I hadn't heard before and my strike rate was pretty good when following up with those artists.

Desperate, though, to find as many great tracks as possible for the last album, I resorted to spending days on Discogs. I entered the name of every Independent label I could find and used keywords - Christmas, Snow, Winter, Santa to find any tracks released on that label. Mostly I was met with a zero. Occasionally, though, I turned up a match. I then had to listen to see if the track was any good, then see if the band was contactable through bandcamp, Facebook etc. Many were not, but I slowly started to gather tracks, many from decades ago, which is why you will notice in the tracklisting below a surprising number of songs from Indie bands of the 80's, 90's (my heyday!). Then bands from earlier volumes started to contact me, asking if I wanted another contribution from them.

All said and done, I received a mammoth response from a wonderful set of musicians. A huge thank you to them all. Once again, there is no filler here, not even on a 65-track album. no as a part of the motor gang rust and ruin, he doesn't trust the council to look out for the forgotten, the lost and the less fortunate. under min's leadership, he thinks there is a fighting chance to help justice take its course.

if they chose their sector and profession, why did they make that choice? if they didn’t, why not? were they happy with their assignment or not?

the profession chose him, with his metal working / metal manipulation, but he does not hate it, nor does he find it taxing. working with his hands is better than using his brain or having to think to make a living. because of his metal manip work comes easy.

a purple bandana that is used to keep his hands clean from oil and grease while being a motorbike mechanic.

Golden skies reach your living room, spreading through the place. The neighbourhood has settled into a quiet hum, ready for the hour of the evening but your house has only just begun bubbling with excitement. Naaila walks out of your kitchen and rushes upstairs to your bathroom. After your phone call, you decided to give her a visit, wanting to check out how sorry she was. Turns out she bought you a whole new bed. The frame, the mattress, the covers, the duvet, the pillows, all of it brand new, all of it better. You almost didn’t believe it, or her but she proved to you that she meant it, and all of it was there to stay.

There are loud knocks on the door and a muffled sound of bickering. “Hey you guys.” you greet, watching the both of them compose themselves in front of you, holding bottles of some alcohol.

“We come bearing gifts,” Darios says, holding the bottles towards you only for them to be snatched momentarily after.

“We come bearing alcohol for all, mostly me. ” Annalise says, walking inside the house once you make way for them to enter. “Woah, you’re place is nice,” Annalise remarks, slipping off her shoes and looking around.

“It’s alright, I may be planning on moving out to somewhere bigger down the future,” you explain, taking a good look at the place.

“Oh. Who else do you live with?” she asks, crouching to stroke your cat, Gigi.

“What?”

“You said you want to move somewhere bigger, so you and the whole you live with may want more space.”

“I don’t live with anyone.” you mutter, your lips straining into a tight line.

“Oh. No boyfriend or anything?” she asks, standing up again, yet you just shake your head slowly feeling some form of embarrassment creep over you. What you’re embarrassed for you’re not sure, but you still feel it anyways.

“Anna.” Darios scolds under his breath “It’s alright Y/N, most people out age live alone, and it’s not a crime for wanting more room.” As if on cue to stop the energy of the conversation from dying, Naaila scurries down the stairs.

“Okay I’m totally ready to play Just Dance now!” she shouts as she rushes down. “Oh hey guys.” the two new people in the room catch her off guard, surprised she didn’t hear them enter the house. “Are you two the infamous Darios and Annalise?” she asks, walking into the room more. “Are you two the ones being friends with my baby at work?” she says, going in to hug the both of them.

“Will you quit calling me your baby.” you snap at her, holding Gigi in your arms.

“And you are?” Annalise asks her.

“Naaila. Annalise your hair is like gorgeous, who’s your stylist?” she asks her after she pulls away from the hug, inspecting her hair carefully.

“Thank you, It’s Sarah at Everrly Boutique.”

“I haven’t heard of it, but I’ll be sure to check it out.” Naaila responds, tucking her own long, flowing hair behind her ears. Her hair is her pride and joy, having grown it out since childhood, and it’s usually the first thing people notice about her. It cascades down her back, past her waist, a symbol of her meticulous care and patience. “Okay, now what are we doing, singing, dancing, both?” asks, waving the remote around in her hand.

“Time to sing. Need to put this bitch in his place.” Annalise says, taking a swig of the alcohol, that you didn’t know she’d opened. You sink into the corner of the couch, cuddling your cat as you watch the performances go down. Annalise decided to go first, choosing a belt-y song to sing, screaming and shouting all over the place, but it didn’t matter to her. She decided that her bottle would be her mic, trying to sneak sips between song breaks. Next was Naaila who decided on being a popstar, turning off the lights and making everyone use their phones as flashlights, waving them in the dark.

“Y’know Y/N, you should really start judging us, tell us who did best,” Annalise suggests, falling back further into your couch once Naaila’s performance was over.

“Right and have you guys murder me if you don’t get the top spot I don't think so,” you reply, standing up to go and answer the door. It was the pizza you’d ordered and you honestly didn’t remember ordering so much.

Naaila must have put in an extra order, whatever, she’s probably paying for them.

Once you pay, you collect the boxes, struggling to keep them upright and head back into the living room. You’re met with Darios sitting on the coffee table, guitar on his leg as he strums and sings. Directly in front of him is Annalise who is sat still, watching every second of his performance.

“I practice every day

To find some clever lines to say

To make the meaning come true.”

You’re in awe, you never knew your co-worker could sing, yet here he is, basked in the dimming lights of the day, eyes closed as he does it.

“But then I think I'll wait

Until the evening gets late

And I'm alone with you.”

“The time is right, your perfume fills my head

The stars get red, and, oh, the night's so blue

And then I go and spoil it all

By saying somethin' stupid like, "I love you"

Once the song ends, you and Naaila immediately burst into applause. “Darios. You didn’t tell me you could sing,” you exclaim, walking towards him. He shyly places the guitar down next to him chuckling.

“Yeah man, you were so good. You were all like “I love you.” and shit.” Naaila adds, lowering her voice to mimic him. “How many girls have you won over with that one, huh.” she asks, sitting close to Annalise and lying. Annalise who’s still sat on the edge of the couch, now sits quietly. Her hands are in her lap and stares directly at them.

“None,” Darios responds to Naaila, briefly glancing at Annalise.

Oh.

“Well, how many girls are you planning on trying that with?” They both look up at each other now, holding each other’s gaze for a second before shifting uncomfortably.

“None.”

“Where’d you even get that guitar?” you finally ask. Darios hands it back to you letting Naaila explain the situation.

“One of your exes gave it to you. Well tried, you weren’t here. So I took it and put it in one of your storage rooms.”

“How have I never seen this? And why didn’t you tell me?”

“You were already broken up. It was the one that was constantly trying win you back post break up and you said you would rather die than see you again. I only kept it because he gave you a whole frekaing guitar and you never know when you’d need it. For example today.”

You narrow your eyes at her, “ Still shoudln’t have kept it.”

“Okay, Okay, sorry, sorry.” she apologises again, hugging loosely. She’s drunk. Annalise enters the room, the drunk seemingly evaporated out of her, with how quiet she’s being.

“I think we’ve decided on a movie.” she says, pizza in her hand, before walking back. to the living room. The two seemed to have chosen a horror movie to watch. You and Naaila share the larger couch, leaving Darios and Annalise to share the smaller one. They sit close, but not too close, the space between them filled with an unspoken tension. Every now and then, you catch Darios making a quiet comment, just loud enough for Annalise to hear, and she responds with a whisper that makes him chuckle.

Naaila settles when she rests her head on your shoulder, eyes dropping, completely missing the scary moment of the movie. But you didn’t mind. Eventually, the movie lulls everyone into a quiet, comfortable state. The room is warm, the kind of warmth that seeps into your bones and makes you feel safe.

Your phone vibrates in your pocket, a call.

That’s unexpected.

You slip out from under Naaila, placing her head on the armrest of the couch, as you tiptoe out of the quiet room to the outside. Checking the caller ID flashing across the screen, you’re shocked.

“Hello? What happened?”

“Does something need to have happened for me to call you? I miss your voice.”

“Is that right, sir?”

Explanation: Comet-like plumes are blowing over the volcanic peaks of Mount Etna in this wintry mountain-and-skyscape from planet Earth. The stacked and blended combination of individual exposures recorded during the cold night of January 23, also capture naked-eye Comet ZTF just above Etna's snowy slopes. Of course increasing sunlight and the solar wind are responsible for the comet's greenish coma and broad dusty tail. This weekend Comet ZTF is dashing across northern skies between north star Polaris and the Big Dipper. From a dark site you can only just spot it as a fuzzy patch though. That's still an impressive achievement if you consider you are gazing at a visitor from the distant Oort cloud with your own eyes. But binoculars or a small telescope will make for an even more enjoyable view of this Comet ZTF in the coming days.

As this amazing picture shows, some of the coolest aircraft ever built took part in the airshow which was held on Mar. 24-26, 1966 in conjunction with the Air Force Association (AFA) 20th anniversary convention. However, aircraft ID captions need some work- Flight line above the hangar – Aircraft (no tag) between the F-4 and F-102 is an F-106 – Third aircraft from right is an F-106, not an F-102 Lower left – that is a YF–12A, not an SR–71 — on the lower right the aircraft is a B-26K, not an A-37 — the X-15 is a full-scale mockup — The non-captioned rocket is a Thor Able.

The North American XB-70 Valkyrie air vehicle 2 (AV/2) was the star performer at US Air Force (USAF) biggest airshow in years, making not only its first public appearance, but also its first landing away from home base of Edwards AFB, Calif. The 275-ton giant flew from Edwards to Carswell AFB, in fifty-five minutes, piloted by North American’s Al White and USAF Lt. Col. Fitzhugh Fulton. More than 350,00 people saw the 275-ton giant during three-day static display. Carswell AFB was to be the only airfield that AV/2 would fly to and return before being destroyed following an accidental mid-air collision on Jun. 8, 1966. With North American’s Al White and USAF Lt. Col. Fitzhugh Fulton at the controls, the Valkyrie spent only 13 minutes at Mach 2.6 before slowing up, winding up at 6,000 feet over Carswell AFB just 59 minutes after takeoff! For the next half hour, AV/2 thundered around the skies of Texas before landing. The return flight two days later was the only flight during the entire program where performance data was not recorded, as Cotton (in the pilot’s seat) and White flew back at subsonic speeds, taking a little over three hours to return to Edwards.
