💚 Life has been crazy but I haven't posted anything proper in MONTHS, so I figured it was time for a little update. Maybe some of my many sketches will suffice.

I've got an older zine piece that will be released VERY soon, and an older lyric comic I'm finishing since my partner is playing sdr2, so keep an eye out for those!

Otherwise... back to the void with me.

oc lore part 2

here's part 1

So after I started writing a new arc where Them gets left behind, and basically imprisoned for a while, I was playing around on a drawing website that gives you prompts written by other people in the "original characters" room, and the prompt was "purple woman attacked by yellow thing" so i kind of just made up a character to fit in the universe on the spot, since it was already on my mind:

my whole creation process is kind of backwards, i usually draw the art first and then make the backstory afterward, lol. later on the same site I got the prompt "two people chatting," and decided to keep going with this, so the next thing I drew was:

establishing that the purple one is a friend, and that Them doesn't like that their hair is cut short anymore. I figure this is after things calm down and they're no longer locked up, and they're eager to get back to some kind of "normal" after being in fight or flight for so long. I forgot to point out before, but in addition to a haircut, they got an extra ear piercing as well.

Anyway, this purple one, I started calling Friend. She worked on the same ship as Them, but didn't crash on Earth, so they were separated for a while. I imagine that the crew had time to use escape pods, but that Them had to stay behind for whatever reason, I haven't decided if it was a sacrifice they made or if they just couldn't make it in time. But, Friend was also lost, just in a different way that didn't get her in trouble. Sketchdoodle:

Friend, in my head, so far, is a bit more happy with the job than Them is. Not really naive or dumb, but just more fulfilled with the work in general. Them and Friend both do different jobs so they really only see each other in their free time, rather than working together. I made a note at the bottom of this doodlesketch that i think is hard to read, so i'll write a note about that, too: in this drawing, their hairstyles aren't conforming with uniform. Them likes their hair a bit looser than it should be when tied back, and Friend lets her bangs cover her left eye when her boss isn't around. It helps them both feel more personal when everything else about them is made out to be identical to one another.

what we have here is a messy page of notes, so i'll translate it in text as well. defining features of these aliens include the shape of their ears, the fact that they have rings on their iris instead of a single pupil, and so far I only have one nose design, but that will likely change. i haven't had the energy to draw a whole bunch of faces over and over again in a sitting to work that out yet. Their skin and hair tone are always one of these four colors, in different saturations and sometimes kind of combined: Blue, Green, Purple, Pink. Them's skin tone is usually a teal-ish color, but i work with limited colors a lot so they end up either being green or blue a lot of the time. there is one exception: hair color can be red, sometimes.

Their ranks are indicated by stars and moons, depending on where they work. Them has rank II stars, and Friend has rank II moons. The stars indicate the work done is only ever done inside the ship - never leaving except on shore leave, or vacation, or whatever. The stars indicate that they get sent on missions between ships, or to asteroids, or to work on the outside of the ship, usually in small capacity. these aliens never got into colonizing or putting down roots on other planets, i guess. i did make a note about "weapons" but i can't recall where i was going with that, so I'm putting a pin in it for now.

Now, I shall hunt through my sketchbooks for more art, because i promised more art! and i'm using a brand new laptop that doesn't have ANY files on it.

^these are some very old sketches, they're very faint and smudged because i used this sketchbook a lot and that kind of just happens. i've also been playing with the idea of antenna, like how some aliens in fiction have, but i've never nailed it in a way i like so far... some of these upcoming have more of it though!

i really liked the happy emotion in this one!! :D

this one's unfinished, you can see there was smudging when i was coloring the hair and i just kind of decided to walk away from it instead of continuing to get mad.

^ these are the two drawings i made to test out redesigning their face a bit! i was trying out the antenna again, rearranging the scar and red eye and orange eyebrow to align more with an injury, changing up the hair length....

i drew this one soon after those other redesign doodles, i like this one a lot and it's actually up on my wall right now! i enjoy the line weight a lot with this one, i should draw like this more.

more exploration of the newest iteration... hair perhaps growing out after being buzzed off...

this was another drawing game one, redesigning Them as a water nymph (hair purple cause they didn't have a lot of dark pink color options)
