Before New York.

Marley grew up on a disused farm. With plenty of overgrown land to explore. He spent most of his childhood playing with sticks, rocks and mud. He had a vibrant imagination and could spend whole summers just amusing himself surrounded by nature.

He was homeschooled by his mother until he was about 15. He's got the basics down, but, it was clear from an early age that he wasn't the academic type.

From he was about 10, his father began to teach him a little bit of everything he knew. They went hunting together and he taught him basic woodworking as well as home and vehicle maintenance. They were never particularly close, but Marley looks back on their time of silent co-working with great nostalgia.

He worked mainly as a carpenter until he was 36. He still lived in the family home, maintaining the property as his parents got older. However, his life took a drastic turn. His father died suddenly and the grief took his mother a few years later. Now completely alone, he began to neglect both his home and himself as he turned to alcohol to try and cope with the sudden change in his life.

Desperate to turn things around, on a sudden whim of rare clarity, he booked himself into a treatment centre in New York, selling the family home to afford his medical care as well as an apartment.

Present Day.

Marley lasted less than six months in the rehabilitation programme before he insisted that he could do it alone and that having all the people around him was just making things worse. And so, he left and took his few belongings to the cheap apartment he'd purchased in Queens.

Marley works, but, he's extremely inconsistent. He's good with his hands and takes up a lot of 'cash-in-hand' style odd jobs. Such as painting, woodwork, basic household plumbing/electrics and other manual labour jobs. However, getting him to show up and be reliable when he does, is often a struggle.

He often has little cash and that he does have he tends to squander. So, it wouldn't be unusual to see him dumpster diving or thrifting for essentials. His current prized possession is a wind-up vinyl player as he can still enjoy it whenever his electric gets cut off.

His home is in relative squalor. Despite his ability to tend to things, he is neglectful both of himself and his surroundings. His home is untidy. He doesn't have too many possessions, but, they tend to be strewn around as he sets things down and forgets about them.

Marley wants to do better for himself. But, he's ambivalent between feeling he deserves more out of his life, and feeling that he's ruined his chances and may as well not bother trying, as he feels he'll only fail anyway.

The Bad Influence. Someone who's only there for a good time. A fairweather friend. Marley can be witty and excitable, but he can also be impulsive and end up in over his head. You love the fun you guys have together, but, when it goes on too long and he ends up in trouble, you're nowhere to be seen.

The Mother Hen. Someone who genuinely wants to be his friend and wants to help him be the best version of himself he can be. In a sense, you feel sorry for him. It makes you feel better to help him clean up, or to fix him breakfast or tend to his wounds. Though, you draw a line and refuse to engage in his self destructive behaviours alongside him.

The Romantic Interest. Someone who sees something special in Marley. Maybe you think you can fix him, maybe you love him just the way he is. You just want to be there and be part of the journey, if only he'd let you in.

The Dog Catcher. Someone who's sick of Marley always bothering them. Perhaps you're a small business owner and he's rummaging around in your dumpster leaving a mess, or, you're a neighbour and his 3am music sessions are keeping you awake. Whatever the reason, you want the problem muzzled before it gets out of hand.

The Raccoon. Marley seems to know all the good spots in town to get a free meal or cheap items. You happen to know he's also able to make furniture and fix up cars. You want him to like you, and you want to help him, but, only because he has the ability to help you in return if he lets you tag along.

The Concerned Onlooker. Someone who frequents the same bars as Marley. You've seen him fall asleep in there as many times as you've seen him get kicked to the kerb. You don't know him too well, but, you have a casual chat here and there before things get too intense. Maybe you should say something, but, is it really your place?

Billy Loomis, the main antagonist of Wes Craven's 1996 cult classic "Scream"

A troubled teenage boy who is suffering from the trauma of being abandoned by his mother. Upon finding out that his girlfriend Sidney Prescott's mother is responsible for this trauma he goes on a killing spree one year after the death of her mother. Donning a ghost like mask, a black cloak and an intimidating voice via a modulator he enlists the help of his friend Stu Macher to commit a series of murders and start targeting Sidney and anyone around her. Sidney must use her resourcefulness and intelligence to defeat Billy and Stu and uncover the truth.

Billy is played by actor Skeet Ulrich, who previously played in "The Craft" with Neve Campbell. Their on screen chemistry is what led to him being cast as Billy. Ulrich reprises the role in the 2022 requel and "Scream VI" as a hallucination. As it's revealed that he had an affair with a woman named Christina Carpenter who had an illegitimate daughter by him named Sam. Billy appears as a hallucination to Sam due to her troubled past and mental health issues brought on by substance use. It's seen that through Billy's genes Sam is shown to have a thirst for blood as she viciously eviscerates the villains in both of her films.

It's most likely Billy won't be appearing anytime soon due to Sam and her sister Tara being written out of the franchise.

thomas was born and raised in moorbrooke, maine. he grew up in an extremely wealthy, influential, conservative family. while he was a child, his dad was a (controversial) senator. his mom was also a prosecutor who took on serious crimes. needless to say, he didn’t see them very much. he was essentially raised by nannies for a majority of his childhood. 

he did his part to be the well-behaved child that looked great in photos and made his family appear picture perfect. until his teenage years, he didn’t question their ideals. however, once he grew up a bit, he realized he didn’t agree with a majority of what they preached. 

thomas became rebellious by the age of 14/15. he would sneak out of his house to smoke weed and drink with his friends. he also started to date and experiment with his peers. for a while, he was only out for trouble. 

one night, while being forced to dress nice and put on a show for the cameras, thomas was made to attend a mixer with lots of influential people from both sides of the aisle. this was the night that he met the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. she was the daughter of a strong liberal politician. from the first time he laid eyes on amy, he knew that she was one day going to marry her. for lack of a better way to describe it, she changed his life.

the two fell madly in love and he cleaned up his act.. mostly. of course, his parents weren’t fans of him dating a political rival’s daughter, but he didn’t care. 

the two were inseparable and even had plans to go to college together. as things have it, amy found out she was pregnant at just 17. of course, it caused a lot of tension at first. however, both families eventually decided to rally behind the youngsters and even help them raise the baby. she gave birth to a healthy baby boy soon after.

by 18, thomas began working at his future father-in-laws organization and made decent money while also attending college. that year, his parents bought him a house to raise their family in.

within two years,  thomas and amy decided they wanted another child but she was NOT about to go through natural birth again. they decided to adopt. given their wealth and resources, the adoption was easy and carried less obstacles. they adopted saraya, a beautiful girl and decided they were done with all that. 

the next 10 years were perfect. he was an advocate for progressive change and worked hard to make money and raise his two young children with his wife.  that was until that night.

on a cold january night in 1992, amy was driving home late from visiting family when she was hit head on by a drunk driver. she died on impact. she left behind her husband and two children at the young age of 31. 

thomas wasn’t a perfect dad, but he tried. he always taught his kids to be independent thinkers and let them follow their dreams. he was present as much as he could be, but raising two teenagers by himself was no walk in the park.

finding love after the tragedy never seemed to work well for him. he had a few decent relationships, but they all crumbled over time. by the time his kids left the house, he was lonely a majority of the time. 

jump forward a few (r like a decade later), thomas was really lonely and nearing 50. however, he met a slightly younger woman (early 30s or so) at the bar and started a fling. the two had a couple of months of bliss and OOPS.... thomas got her pregnant. Baby number three happened just over two years ago. The little girl’s name is Cassie. 

while he faced his challenges getting people to look past his past, people loved his messages of growth and community. About a year ago, he became the mayor of his hometown, Moorbrooke.

Did you see JOHN MARSTON from RED DEAD REDEMPTION walking around Limbo? The CISMALE looks like SKEET ULRICH, and is FIFTY ONE years old. I’ve heard he can be LOYAL & RESOURCEFUL but also SHORT-SIGHTED & IMPULSIVE. When I think of them I think of FACIAL SCARS, A RELUCTANT GUNSLINGER, AND A WOLF STALKING ITS PREY. They’ve been here WITH their memories as a DETECTIVE at LCPD for THIRTEEN YEARS. I heard they’re still trying to figure out how they ended up in Limbo.

so, a quick rundown for anyone unfamiliar with the character, then a brief summary of that rundown, some stuff about his new life, then some little tidbit bullet points. spoilers for rdr 1&2, in case anyone hasn’t played them yet and wants to.

Born south of Chicago in 1873, his father was blinded in a bar fight when he was a child and died later when he was eight. His mother was a prostitute that died giving birth to him.

John killed a man at 11 years old, though he said it wasn’t his fault. A year later he was caught stealing from homesteaders in southern Illinois and they were going to hang him when a man named Dutch van der Linde intervened and took him in. John joined Dutch’s gang.

It took a long time but eventually when Dutch starts going crazy there’s only a few people who are really looking out for John, one of which is Arthur who sacrifices himself so he can run away with his wife Abigail and their son Jack to hopefully have a good, normal life.

They live on the run for a while until Abigail leaves him and John realizes he needs to settle down, so he takes out a loan with the bank to buy a plot of land and with the help of some friends, builds a house and a ranch to make Abigail come back and show her he’s committed to a peaceful life with her. That’s until Sadie, a friend that was in Dutch’s gang returns with news of finding the man, Micah, who killed Arthur and was responsible for poisoning Dutch’s mind.

After John kills Micah and gets the money from an old job that went sour, that encourages the federal government to resume the search for the remnants of Dutch’s gang, taking Abigail & Jack and forcing John to hunt down the rest of the gang if he ever wants to see them again.

John confronts Bill Williamson, his first target at an old abandoned military fort where Bill shoots him and leaves him to die outside the fort. He’s found by a woman named Bonnie McFarlane and her ranch hand Amos. After she treats his wounds and gives him room and board, he works off his debt to her at her ranch, and resumes his mission to take down Bill Williamson, Javier Esquella, and Dutch van der Linde.

It’s a long road, but eventually after completing his mission, John is reunited with Abigail and Jack, and life seemingly goes back to normal. That is, until the ranch is stormed by countless government agents. Betrayed and lied to, John tries to fight but after seeing a long time friend shot, he realizes it’s pointless and helps his wife and son to the barn so they can get a horse and make a run for it, promising he’ll be right behind them. Then, when it’s only him left, he walks through the barn doors to be relentlessly shot and killed by the dozens of government agents still standing.

if ya don’t wanna read all that, i don’t blame you lol. basically: john was an outlaw in a gang, eventually the group fell apart, his best friend died, mentor betrayed him, and he had a wife and kid to think about and protect so he tried to get out of that life and make an honest living under a false identity. that didn’t last long because federal agents eventually found him, kidnapped his wife and child, and forced him to take down the last living members of the old gang. when he finally completed his task he was supposed to be able to get back to his honest life, but they betrayed him and stormed his house, killing him after a dramatic last stand — or so he thought.

arrived in limbo completely healed up. even the deep scars he had on his face from being attacked by wolves back in the day were only faintly noticeable.

life in limbo was so far removed from anything he ever would have imagined, with all the bright lights, skyscrapers, and technology... it was a brand new world for the old gunslinger, and he was admittedly very slow to adapt.

didn’t make many new friends or have much direction early on, but there was this one woman he befriended that helped him understand the world, but the hardest thing about this new life was not having his son or his wife there with him. it took a long time for him to come to terms with the idea he might never see them again, and during that time he and his new friend had developed mutual feelings for each other. it took years, but she taught him it was okay to love again. until of course, she up and disappeared one day without a trace.

he did what he could to find her but despite some impressive detective work on his part, he never learned what happened to her. he did however, find a new calling. something he was good at. something to pass the time. so he spent the next few years working until he could become a detective --- but this time, on the “right” side of the law. 

his new favorite food is burritos, especially vending machine burritos. that’s mind-blowing to him.

truly amazed by all the technology and the internet. he’s done his best to assimilate but he’s still not very savvy with any of it. trying to video call him is like trying to facetime your grandma.

doesn’t know whether he’s captivated or embarrassed by old westerns. maybe a bit of both.

appreciates yoga pants, crop tops, and the like way more than he’ll admit.

pretty knowledgeable these days, honestly. it was difficult but he did manage to complete his education and even spends a lot of his free time reading books now.

still has all of arthur’s old belongings, and believe it or not, he still wears his hat on occasion, though he doesn’t carry his or arthur’s satchels anymore. he hopes to see arthur again someday and return his stuff to its rightful owner.

he does tend to wear gamblers hats and the like still, but he’s also integrated baseball caps into his wardrobe.

misses horse riding so fucking much.

has gotten much better at illustrating and writing, though he journals much less often these days.

still has his deadeye and has unfortunately had to use it on a few occasions.

took a shotgun blast to the leg a couple years back that completely shattered his bones, so the docs replaced it with a completely titanium leg and hip (under a skin coating of course). good ol’ 2080. he might be in better condition now than he ever was in his old life.

Jericho Thoughts

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhh

okay so. i’m rewatching jericho. i first watched it sometime around 8th-9th grade, I think maybe somewhere in the first half of 2014. I basically remembered this: the main character was the black sheep of the family, he came back to town, and atomic bombs destroyed most of the US, and the show was about the town dealing with the aftermath. the guy from continuum and one ep of flashpoint played a character i liked named dale (eric knudsen) who liked a popular girl who ended up befriending him, and the asking-for-flowers flashpoint ep guy was the responsible brother. Someone used to be a teacher. The main character looked like Skeet Ulrich, but i didn’t know who that was, just the name.

turns out the main character WAS Skeet Ulrich, and 2 characters (heather and emily) used to be teachers, and i apparently forgot almost all of the major characters. I’ve been rewatching it with the knowledge of which characters die, so that’s good. the show is really good, and it’s really intense. I’m almost done, and it’s tough to keep watching both because it’s so intense and because i know a character i like is about to die tragically. 

watching this show makes me so TENSE. i think it really got bad when goetz showed up and i knew bonnie’s death was coming up. i’ve been watching the same episode for like an hour and i started 6 minutes in from another viewing. i don’t know why i’m so stressed. well actually i do it’s because things in this show are AWFUL but i know that no one dies after bonnie.

i also really like that the plot is very much what drives the show. romantic relationships somewhat matter (eric/april/mary, dale/skylar, and stanley/mimi in particular get screentime, while jake’s relationships with emily and heather are there and meaningful but not something that drives the story or gets a lot of attention. dale and eric’s relationships have also been less important in season 2) but they are regularly sidelined while the character deal with the latest crisis. characters have backstories that aren’t always super expanded on, like johnston’s chaotic neutral dad or stanley and bonnie’s parents, because they don’t have a meaningful impact on the plot- how mimi grew up isn’t going to change how the Greens deal with food shortages. 

also, i love that it’s a post-apocalyptic show where there’s a lot of fighting and lawlessness and not once have they used rape as a plot device. the closest it ever came to being mentioned was when maggie, a survivor pretending to be military to get towns’ supplies, said that ‘out there, men only want women for one thing’ and that’s IT. i respect that so much. way too many shows and books and movies are like ‘things are bad... and we can only express that through rape’ but this show never does

also the grey morality is very well done in season 1 (the bad guys are clearer in season 2). characters fight and do shitty things because everyone is just trying to survive. Constantino was wrong to start a war with Jericho, but i also understand where he was coming from. Ravenwood ransacked New Bern and left them with almost nothing, and Jericho never bothered to warn them. There were some people considering not honoring the deal to repay the windmills in food. New Bern was on the brink of destruction and Constantino tried to get the resources for survival where he could, by force. The thing with the refugees too. There isn’t really enough food for everyone, and it’s true that Jericho’s been getting a lot of refugees when it’s barely managing to sustain its own population. Some of the refugees have been stealing from them, and sometimes you have to make tricky decisions to survive. But the refugees are also probably going to die if they get sent away, and understandably they cannot accept that. they’ve been stealing food to prepare for this possibility, and they are willing to be violent to secure their place because jericho is much better off than just about anywhere else and they don’t want to die. Roger gets in a fight with Gray and accidentally shoots him, but then actively chooses to hold him at gunpoint and refuse him medical help unless he guarantees the safety of the other refugees. That’s obviously awful- but he’s also trying to protect the lives of the 50 innocent people he brought here. In the end, the refugees get to stay because some Jericho residents volunteer to share their rations, but Roger does not because he obviously committed a terrible crime. He’s not a bad person, but of course he can’t just be forgiven and integrated back into Jericho like nothing happened, and he accepts that and leaves with only a gun from Jake to protect himself because at least the others and emily will be safe. 

also that emily and roger’s relationship wasn’t made meaningless in order to further her relationship with jake even despite their history as high school sweethearts.

oh god i just watched the scene where stanley’s talking to bonnie in the morgue and it’s so well done and i’m just in bed crying- not sobbing or anything, but plenty of tears. i don’t know what the last show to make me cry like this was; i’ve been watching so much youtube that i haven’t been watching a lot of hard hitting shows lately i guess. Barry was extremely Fucked Up, that might have made me cry, but it might not have- it had me fucked up for weeks, but i don’t know if i cried.

anyway the scene with stanley and bonnie in the morgue is so good. Stanley talking to her like she’s still alive the way they always did for their parents, and talking to her sign language bc that’s her language. Telling her to say hi to their parents. Letting her know that mimi is still alive, that she succeeded in protecting her, and thanking her for it. Still joking around a little even though he’s obviously heartbroken and just being so genuine with her. Neither of them deserved this. 

wow can’t believe heather is a fuckin bootlicker, knowing that the government is extremely corrupt and that she and beck are destroying new bern and choosing to continue to work for that government.

oh beck just has to be some sort of a stupid son of a bitch. absolute goddamn buffoon. siding with the govt, arresting jake in the shadiest way possible in the middle of a crowd, choosing to torture jake (which if he knew a goddamn thing like hawkins did he would know was ineffective), and then thinking that after everything this town and those rangers have done to protect themselves and their loved ones that it was just going to work out for him like the others aren’t going to come for jake immediately and efficiently. i liked beck well enough before but any fondness or respect for him is fucking absolutely gone.

at least eric is really getting to show off his leadership skills now. johnston’s dead, jake’s been arrested/kidnapped, hawkins is busy with other shit. eric’s always one of the second-in-commands but this is one of the few times he’s just plain in command.

“your friends have escalated this to a level i will not tolerate” right but you dragging jake to a fuckin blacksite to torture him was fine???? YOU ESCALATED THIS YOU DUMB STUPID SON OF A BITCH. you have really been given so many chances this season to not serve an evil government and try to protect these people and you’ve failed almost every time, huh? he’d also have to be some sort of an idiot to think that a clearly faked note with jake’s signature saying ‘this bad’ would stop anyone. god i haven’t escalated to hating someone this much so quickly in a long fuckin time.

love how beck is leveraging the entire town of jericho and choosing to oppress them in order to get the rangers to turn themselves in <3 i love punishing innocent people to use them against others just like goetz did last episode <3 what a good guy

i dont know why there are so many beck fics on ao3 because this man fucking sucks. like, can you imagine refusing a whole town food, power, and lights as a bargaining chip, blaming someone else (”don’t forget, you caused this”) and then still thinking you have the moral high ground? incredible mental gymnastics when will beck be in the olympics
