putting all my willpower into ignoring ilia's free program music choice 🧘♀️
the legality of backflips is still not fully registered in my mind... i know what's coming and it still feels surprising and in a way... wrong. i wonder if they will ban it again someday?

CAS Dismisses ROC Appeal in 2022 Olympic Team Event Case; Canadian Appeal Pending
CAS Media Release
Lausanne, 25 July 2024 – The CAS Panel in charge of the appeals filed by the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) (CAS 2024/A/10355), the Figure Skating Federation of Russia (CAS 2024/A/10360), and Russian skaters Aleksandr Galliamov, Nikita Katsalapov, Mark Kondratiuk, Anastasia Mishina, Victoria Sinitsina and Kamila Valieva (CAS 2024/A/10356) (collectively, the Appellants) against the re-ranking decision announced by the International Skating Union (ISU) on 30 January 2024 (the Challenged Decision) in relation to the final standings for the Team Event in figure skating at the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 has issued its decision: the appeals are dismissed. The Appellants had sought a ruling from CAS re-ranking the figure skating Team Event and awarding the gold medal to the ROC. Following the hearing that took place on 12 June 2024, the Panel deliberated and concluded that the results of Ms Valieva in the Olympic Figure Skating Team Event were correctly disqualified in the Challenged Decision, and that the ROC Skating Team could not be awarded the gold medal. Consequently, the above-mentioned appeals are dismissed. The Panel issued the Operative Part of the Arbitral Award. The full award, with the grounds for the Panel’s decision, will be issued as soon as possible. The second CAS Panel, different from the first, constituted to resolve the related, but separate, appeal (CAS 2024/A/10354) filed by Canadian skaters Madeline Schizas, Piper Gilles, Paul Poirier, Kirsten Moore-Towers, Michael Marinaro, Eric Radford, Vanessa James and Roman Sadovsky, together with, Skate Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) (collectively, the Canadian Appellants), held a hearing at the CAS headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland on 22 July 2024. The Canadian Appellants also seek a ruling from CAS re-ranking the figure skating Team Event, as follows: United States of America (Gold); Japan (Silver); Canada (Bronze). The second CAS Panel is now deliberating. It is not possible to indicate at this time when the second Panel’s decision will be issued.
Following the CAS decision on ROC’s appeal, the IOC stated that they would work with the ISU and US/Japanese Olympic Committees to hold a medal ceremony at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
IOC STATEMENT ON CAS DECISION: This decision comes just in time to still be able to make the medal allocation for gold and silver possible during the Olympic Games Paris 2024. The IOC will now work with the @ISU_Figure, USOPC and the JOC to bring the athletes to Paris in order to hold the ceremony here in the Champions Park based on the amended results from the ISU. We are glad that this opportunity can be offered to the athletes and teams who, unfortunately, had to wait for a very long time for their medals due to the ongoing legal case.
Christine Brennan of USA Today Sports reports that the medal ceremony is planned for August 7, although this is yet to be confirmed with the IOC.

Tallinn Trophy 2024 November 16-17, 2024 Tallinn, Estonia
Challengers that happen during the Grand Prix feel much lower in stakes than the ones before - we've seen the programs already, the teams have very varied goals here - like Lopareva/Brissaud are the only ones who still are active on the GP. they're going to Warsaw Cup this week, so seem to be wanting to get into a competition groove before the GPF
Bratti/Somerville - not sure if they're here for experience or World standing points. after their twizzle mishap at Skate Canada they were behind F/A, but they established that when they're clean, they can score above some strong teams
the Mrazeks win their first senior international medal 🥳 happy to see H/C doing so well - these programs suit them, and they've been skating with more confidence. i don't feel affinity for F/A's style necessarily, but the more i watch them, the more impressed i am with their skating. she's really young, too, but skates like someone more experienced
Lily and Nathan had a really good competition - i don't think they get full credit for how hard this Firebird FD is, but it's looking so much more assured now. personal best international scores in both programs 😭🙌
Katarina/Dmitry skated their senior RD - same songs, different costume and layout. they withdrew for medical reasons from the FD - hope they're ok - she posted a story saying they're getting it checked out, whatever it is. they have JGPF in a couple weeks
this was a relatively high scoring event - all of the top 10 teams scored either personal or season's best. but it was also a well skated event- top 11 in the RD, top 7 in the FD were clean
Josée Piché for IAM, Greg Zuerlein for MIDA, Adrian for IAMO

Finally some good news for Stephen fans. He has been assigned to two GP events for next season. He's a host pick at 2024 Skate Canada International being held at Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, NS, October 25-27. This is the venue where Stephen won his novice national title in 2016. He is also competing at 2024 NHK Trophy in Tokyo, Japan November 8-10. Japanese fans will be thrilled to have him back. Stephen did SCI and NHK in 2022 so this is familiar territory for him now.
I know I'm late to sharing this but I don't think any of us were expecting GP assignments on a Sunday so I was busy with my car but after 5 months of no news this is quite welcome. Also having two assignments right from the start is good for planning. And Stephen will be on the National team as well since he's gotten GP assignments.
For anyone going to SCI you should be aware that there is no gala this time around. I'm not sure what they plan to do on October 27 - I didn't think Stephen would be competing there so I haven't paid attention to this event. Pre-sale tickets go on sale tomorrow.
To that insecure individual who was trying to spread the rumour that Stephen has retired in February when his fans were anxious about his health: I hope you see this and are having a miserable day today.
To the rest of you: happy GP assignment day.

Canadian Olympians push for opposition to Russians in Paris
March 8, 2023
A group of 42 retired Canadian Olympians urged the Canadian Olympic Committee to reject the idea of allowing Russians to participate in next year’s Paris Games unless Russia withdraws from Ukraine.
“We condemn recent public statements issued by the COC supporting the ‘exploration of a pathway’ for Russians and Belarusians to compete as ‘neutrals’ in the 2024 Paris Olympics,” the Canadians wrote in a statement released Wednesday.
Opening that door, the athletes said, “sends a message that the COC is no longer concerned with Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine.”
Signing the statement was a who’s-who of Canadian Olympic greats and gold medalists, including Hayley Wickenheiser (hockey), Jenn Heil and Alex Bilodeau (freestyle skiing), Tessa Virtue (skating) and Beckie Scott (cross-country skiing).
Russian and Belarusian athletes have been largely excluded from international competition since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last February. The International Olympic Committee seeks a pathway back for those athletes to compete without officially representing their countries, citing human-rights experts who argue the athletes should not be discriminated against solely because of their passports.
“Refusing their participation in international sport is not simply a matter of denying athletes a choice to compete because of their passport, it is a rejection of an unlawful and inhumane war and a recognition of the role international sports plays in geopolitics,” the Canadians wrote.
The COC has walked a fine line in staking out a position. Last month, secretary general David Shoemaker suggested athletes from the banned countries should be made to publicly speak out against the war to gain the neutral status they would need to participate.
Canada’s was also among a group of 35 governments that released a statement last month saying that, without clarity on a workable neutrality model, “we do not agree that Russian and Belarusian athletes should be allowed back into competition.”
Both the COC and the governments have stopped short of stating that Russians should not be allowed.
In their statement, the Canadian Olympians said a requirement for Russians to declare opposition to the war is “unfounded and out of touch.”
“For example, it is illegal in Russia to publicly denounce military actions abroad, and virtually impossible for high-profile athletes to oppose the war,” the statement said.
It also used instances in 2018 and 2021 when Russians could compete not under their country’s flag — but instead under the titles of “Olympic Athletes from Russia” and “Russian Olympic Committee” due to doping sanctions — as examples of how “separation of athlete from state is an impossible task.”
The letter also points out that the war began shortly after last year’s Winter Games in Beijing, which was highlighted by a high-profile meeting between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping before the opening ceremony.
“The Beijing 2022 Games helped set the stage for and dictated the timing of the initial invasion, sports facilities in Ukraine have been targeted by the Russian attacks, and Russian athletes have been elevated to high-ranking military positions and used in war propaganda,” the letter said.
It concluded that “no pathway should be considered” for Russians or Belarusians to compete in Paris until Russia “fully withdraws from Ukraine.”

Ice-dance partners Mitchell Islam and the late Alexandra Paul are being inducted in the athlete category. The local couple had been "active in sports for most of their lives, with their greatest successes coming in competitive ice dancing," says the BSHOF. Paul, who passed away in an automobile crash in August 2023 at age 31, and Islam won the Canadian junior national title in 2010, and went on to earn silver medals at the 2010 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships that same season. Together, they would claim three senior Canadian national bronze medals over their career. After winning their second national bronze in 2014, the two qualified to compete at the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, where they placed 18th in the ice-dance event. The pair competed for Canada at two ISU World Championships, with their best result coming at the 2014 worlds when they earned 10th place. "Alexandra and Mitchell were consistently at the top of their sport through the years of 2009 to 2016, competing at the highest international level," says the BSHOF. "They represented Canada at 21 international events, collecting five medals." After their skating career ended, Paul became a lawyer, while Islam became an NCCP-certified figure skating coach through the National Coaching Certification Program. He was recently named ice-dance director at the Mariposa School of Skating in Barrie.
