The 10 Games You Shouldn’t Miss in 2020

With releases like Cyberpunk 2077, Yakuza 7: Like a Dragon, and Doom Eternal, 2020 will be a solid year to end this console generation.

New year, a new list of game releases to look forward to. With 2020 being the last year that the PS4 and Xbox One are the industry leaders, the games that release in the coming months will push each system to its full potential. Heck, some of these games may possibly be the best we’ve seen since this console generation started in 2013. As such, here’s a brief list of games you should not miss when they launch this year. That is if we don’t see any delays…

Yakuza 7: Like a Dragon

If there is one thing the DualShockers staff learned during our game of the year deliberations for 2019, it is to not sleep on Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio. Yes, the makers of Judgment, our surprise game of the year winner for 2019, is making the next iteration of its popular Yakuza franchise: Yakuza 7: Like a Dragon.

However, unlike past Yakuza games, this will not feature the action-adventure gameplay you’ve become accustomed to since the first entry launched back in 2005. Instead, it completely deviates from its action-heavy roots, featuring turn-based mechanics. It will also star a new protagonist, Kasuga Ichiban, rather than Kazuma Kiryu. If you haven’t played any of the previous Yakuza entries, Yakuza 7: Like a Dragon may be a perfect introduction since it is seemingly wholly different than its predecessors.

Granblue Fantasy Versus

If you’ve followed my ramblings on DualShockers, you will know I am a fighting game nerd. Mortal Kombat 11, Samurai Shodown, Dragon Ball FighterZ, and Tekken 7 are among my favorite games of the generation. So, it makes sense I would add Granblue Fantasy Versus to this list.

It’s hard not to be excited about a new Arc System Works fighting game. Between Blazblue: Cross Tag Battle, Guilty Gear Xrd, and Dragon Ball FighterZ, the Japan-based developer have put out some bangers in the fighting genre. With its 2.5D animation, at the very least, it will be a gorgeous game as you get stomped during all those online matches. I’m not speaking from personal experience. Not at all…

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Okay, this wouldn’t be a DualShockers list without a Square Enix RPG. So, I present to you Final Fantasy VII Remake.

To be quite frank, the game speaks for itself. Final Fantasy VII Remake is a retelling of one of the most beloved and influential games of all time. However, rather than the turn-based gameplay of the original, this remake will be much more action-oriented. This will allow you to control Cloud Strife and his fellow rebels more deliberately. Along with its gorgeous visuals, this will surely be one of the biggest titles in 2020.

This first release will not cover the game in its entirety. Yes, there will be multiple parts to Final Fantasy VII Remake. Where this first entry will leave off is still unknown. However, if I were a betting man, I would say it ends when you escape Midgar. (Sorry to spoil a game that is over 20 years old.)

Doom Eternal

Remember when I said this wouldn’t be a DualShockers list if it didn’t include a Square Enix RPG? Well, it also wouldn’t be a DualShockers list if a new Doom game was not on the list. There is an unusual amount of love for the first-person shooter at DualShockers. By ‘unusual,’ I mean totally warranted since Doom (2016) is arguably one of the best games this generation and the Doom franchise is the most influential shooter ever created. This is not bias. This is a fact.

Joking aside, Doom (2016) is a technical marvel. It is such a brilliant showcase with great graphics and frenetic gameplay that rarely hitches, even on consoles. Along with its killer soundtrack, it is one of the best shooters of this console generation. A follow-up to that game is incredibly exciting. Also, who doesn’t want to slay demons to the sweet sounds of Mick Gordon’s rippin’ and tearin’ metal riffs?

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

On the same day the demon-slaying first-person shooter Doom Eternal releases, Nintendo Switch players may opt to commit to an entirely different hell. I’m talking about forkin’ over that cash to Tom Nook in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Nintendo’s Animal Crossing series may not be on the same mainstream popularity level as the Super Mario or The Legend of Zelda franchises. Still, it is immensely popular among Nintendo players. Perhaps it’s because it allows the player to escape from their real-life woes by living a second, more carefree life. Maybe it’s just because they like interacting with cute animals, even if that means having to pay a massive debt to a raccoon. With Animal Crossing: New Horizons being the newest mainline entry since New Leaf (let’s not count the mobile version), along with some cool new features, Doom Guy may have finally found his match.

Dying Light 2

This is actually the game I think people are going to sleep on, and regret not picking it sooner once they play it in 2021. Out of any game on this list — maybe except for Cyberpunk 2077 — Dying Light 2 has to be the most ambitious game on this list.

I liked Dying Light, but it didn’t really leave a lasting impact on me. Just from the footage I saw at E3 2018, I am still excited to see how Techland’s newest zombie adventure pans out. Games have had branching paths before, but Dying Light 2 seems to be taking this to the extreme. From the looks of it, depending on the outcome any given quest can change the world significantly. Not just from the look, but how these last remaining groups of survivors interact with one another. It really does look incredible.

Axiom Verge 2

The first Axiom Verge was such an awesome surprise when it launched back in 2015. Even within a crowded genre, developer Thomas Happ not only managed to make a great “Metroidvania,” he arguably made the best one released this generation. It’s H.R. Giger inspired art, fun gameplay, and exciting sci-fi world made Axiom Verge so much fun to play.

With a sequel now slated for this year, this is definitely a game to look forward to. Axiom Verge 2 was revealed during Nintendo’s Indie World showcase with a new trailer. Deviating from its 8-bit inspired art style in the first, the sequel will have a much brighter look and a completely different pixelated art style that still impresses. If Axiom Verge 2 is equally as good as its predecessor, this will be a game you will not want to miss.

Ghost of Tsushima

The last time we saw a proper game from Sucker Punch was in 2014 when the studio launched inFAMOUS: Second Son for the PS4. Depending on who you talk to, it was either a solid showcase for the PS4 at the time or not the studio’s best work. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be excited about their next game: Ghost of Tsushima.

This is the first time Sucker Punch will be working on a new IP since inFAMOUS launched back in 2009. While there isn’t much known about the upcoming game, Ghost of Tsushima looks incredible. Just look at that trailer above. It is unreal that those visuals will be coming from a PS4. The same way The Last of Us was sort of the pinnacle of PS3 titles, I think Ghost of Tsushima will be that for the PS4.

Session

Look, beggars can’t be choosers. The much-demanded follow-up to EA’s Skate franchise doesn’t seem to be skating its way to consoles any time soon, if at all. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t great alternatives to the beloved skateboarding simulator. That is where Session comes in.

Developed by Creature Studios (stylized as creā-ture Studios), Session really embraces its simulation gameplay. While Skate is more approachable, with a control scheme that takes about 30 minutes to get comfortable with, Session can be incredibly challenging to play. However, that doesn’t make it bad, by any means. From the few hours I’ve played, every moment is a learning experience. The real-life grind of skating a single spot for hours to hit a line perfectly is exceptionally exemplified, which will either entice or scare people. As someone who used to skate regularly, this is what I’ve been looking for.

Cyberpunk 2077

Last, but certainly not least, we have Cyberpunk 2077. Developed CD Projekt Red, the Polish studio’s newest adventure looks unbelievable. In many ways, this is the game I’ve been waiting for since I first watched Blade Runner. Dingy dystopian setting? Check. A protagonist with a cool jacket? Check. Androids? Also, check. And that is really all you need to intrigue me.

Cyberpunk 2077 seems so vast. And if it’s any larger than The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, it will be almost intimidating for me to even start. That being said, this game is going to be a spectacle and something I cannot possibly miss. If Cyberpunk 2077 can maintain the quality the studio is now known for, it will be a solid “swan song” for this current console generation.

Of course, these are just a few games you may not want to miss in 2020. Essentially, once March begins, we are going to be bombarded with a ridiculous amount of potentially quality titles. 10 most exciting games Xbox showed off at E3 2018

Microsoft wasn’t messing around with this year’s E3  conference – it was out to impress with big exclusives, world premieres and hints at what’s to come next from the Xbox brand (and yes, we do mean the next Xbox console). With no awkward presentations and mostly a flurry of gameplay trailers, we got a glimpse of some of the incredible gaming delights coming your way in 2018, 2019 and beyond. So to ensure you’re in the know when it comes to all things Microsoft, we’ve collected together the ten most exciting announcements to come from the Big M at E3 2018. Enjoy!

Halo Infinite

Considering it’s been two and a half years since Halo 5: Guardians, fans have been eagerly waiting the proper return of Master Chief into their lives. The new game in the series is called Halo Infinite, developed by now long-serving custodians 343 Industries and using a brand new engine, the ‘Slipspace Engine’. So while it’s missing the usual number next to its title, it’s nonetheless being billed as the next chapter in the Master Chief saga. So we’re expecting Halo 6 in all but name. No mention of a battle royale mode, but then again, there was no confirmation that there wouldn’t be one. Take that as you will…

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

After all that furore around the trailer shown at the 2017 Game Awards, From Software’s next game has finally been revealed as Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, a new experience very much in the same vein as the Souls series and the PS4 exclusive Bloodborne. 

Set in a version of Feudal Japan, you’ll once again step into the shoes of a warrior who is continually (and rather conveniently) raised from the dead. One of your arms is a mechanical weapon in itself, alluding to some transforming powers a la Bloodborne. We’re expecting a more aggressive form of gameplay, and with the enemies we’ve already seen (those include a spear-wielding foe on horseback and angry looking dude with a poisoned blade) we’re going to need all the offence we can get.

The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit

The next Life is Strange game from Dontnod might not have the title in its name, but it’s still very much in the same universe as the first game and the recent Before the Storm prequel. This free game (we’re under the impression it’s a ‘one-shot’ game rather than something that’s episodic) is called The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit and follows the tale a young boy with a giant imagination dealing with the loss of his mother. The previously announced, but as yet unrevealed, Life is Strange 2 is still coming, but this looks like a wonderful way to pass the time. It’ll arrive for free on 26th June.

Kingdom Hearts 3

So we finally learned the release date of Kingdom Hearts 3 the day before the Xbox Showcase but now we have a brand new trailer and a glimpse of some of the exciting Disney worlds we’ll be heading to when the game releases on Xbox One. Alongside the likes of the previously announced Wreck-It Ralph and Toy Story realms, you’ll also be travelling to the chilly wilds of Frozen where you’ll encounter Elsa, Olaf and the rest of the ‘Let it Go’ crew. We also got to see some new long-distance navigation techniques that could see you snowboarding your way around Elsa’s neck of the woods with Goofy and co.

Forza Horizon 4

Forza Horizon is back, and it’s bringing its very own brand of vehicular open-world mayhem to the Xbox One family of consoles in 2018. Britain is the new setting, offering all manner of beautiful rolling fields, mountainous regions and urban streets to barrel around in new and exciting cars (including the rather fetching looking Mclaren Senna). 

All players will be inhabiting the same game world on Xbox One and Windows 10, although we don’t know if the AI-driven Drivatars will be making their return just yet. Seasons, weather and day/night cycles are all dynamic, with seasons themselves bringing completely altered terrain that will change every road and race. Expect lots of world events too when it arrives on 2 October.

The Division 2

Massive returns to the plague-crippled world of The Division, with the Black Friday sickness of the first game now spreading across the nation. The Division 2 brings you to Washington DC where you’ll encounter a world with a more open sprawl than the tight busy streets of Manhattan. 

Four player co-op is once again on the menu, as are all manner of items to loot and powerful AI factions to take down. Control points were also shown, proving a means of taking back the city turf by turf. We also saw some new gadgets, such as a seeker mine that flits along the ground to enemies and a hardened clay that can freeze enemies (and you) to the spot. Think Prey 2’s glue gun. It hits 19 March, 2019.

Session

While EA failed to reveal the much-wanted Skate 4 at EA Play, Microsoft is seemingly ready set to kickflip in with an Xbox One-exclusive named Session. Developed by Crea-ture Studios and previously funded on Kickstarter, it appears to offer a skateboarding simulator that’s very much in the vein of the Skate titles and the early Tony Hawk games. No word yet on specific modes or features, but expect to bail out and spend time learning every trick. With a New York-style setting we think this could be one of the best new exclusives coming to Xbox One in the (hopefully) near future.

Dying Light 2

While the first game had its problems, Techland’s open-world zombie survival aimed high with its parkour mantling, vertical level design and day/night cycles with the undead horde were transformed into even deadlier creatures come nightfall. The sequel – which has veteran developer Chris Avellone on-board – has a bigger focus on consequences in the game the world, with the remaining human strongholds drastically altered by your decisions. 

With plenty of factions to encounter and all manner of creatures to hunt/parkour away from, Dying Light 2 is aiming even higher. With Avellone on board, expect even more RPG systems that ever before.

Gears 5, Gears Tactics and Gears Pop

It was a Gears of War blowout this year, with not one but three new titles announced from The Coalition. Firstly, there’s the mobile-based Gears Pop which takes the characters of Gears (in Funko form, naturally) and gives them their very own game. No word on what this game will entail, but we wouldn’t be shocked to see some microtransactions. 

Next, Gears Tactics, a turn-based, tactical RPG in the vein of XCOM. Halo made a great transition to a new genre with Halo Wars, so we’re expecting Tactics to follow suit. 

Finally, there’s Gears 5, set after the events of Gears 4 where Kate Diaz will head into the frozen tundra to help save her people. Expect it in 2019.

Cyberpunk 2077

Finally, the biggie. While Microsoft failed to announce the much-rumoured Fable 4, it did have the world exclusive reveal of CD Projekt RED’s new title, Cyberpunk 2077. While we might not know many gameplay details as yet, considering this is coming from the creators of The Witcher series and includes a visual style somewhere between Blade Runner and Judge Dredd, we’d say this shaping up to be the game of the show. Expect awesome 80s-style cars, all manner of androids and enough neon to shake a glow stick at. We cannot wait to play this one.

#10: 100ft Robot Golf

One of the best concepts for a game ever made. The game itself is pretty good, too. I might personally prefer the live-action cutscenes from No Goblin’s previous game Roundabout, but the anime cutscenes are also cool. My favorite mode is the one where you control four robots at the same time, trying to hit four golf balls into the same hole in a given time limit. I also really like the mech that’s controlled by five dogs, they’re good dogs.

Technically this game first came out last year, but it didn’t come to the PC until February of this year, which is when I was first able to play it.

#9: Sonic Mania

I have a couple of controversial opinions related to the Sonic series. I think that Sonic Adventure 1 is the best 3D Sonic game ever made, and I also think that Sonic Generations isn’t any better than Sonic 06. But I don’t think it’s controversial to say that Sonic Mania is a great game. The first playthrough is kind of annoying because you can’t go back and do old zones again until you beat the game. Also, you go back to the beginning of the zone, not the level, when you get a game over. And most of the deaths I had felt cheap in one way or another. But it was fun! Unlike almost every other Sonic game ever made, all of the stages are designed with going fast in mind, even the final few stages. There are definitely slow-paced platforming segments, but there aren’t very many instances where trying to go fast will hurt or kill you, so you can hold right and enjoy the great graphics and scenery flying by. I also really enjoyed the new-to-Mania zones, more than the old zones, in fact. The music in these zones in particular is fantastic, although it’s great in pretty much every level in the game.

#8: Picross S

It’s Picross, on the Switch! What more could you want? Well, a few more puzzles would be nice. There are 150 puzzles, but none of them are larger than 20x15 pixels, so I got through all of them fairly quickly. There’s also a Mega Picross mode, which is the same 150 puzzles, but sometimes the numbers of two adjacent rows or columns are combined. It’s kind of dumb. I also wish you could draw pixels on the touch screen, but the pixels do get pretty small in the bigger puzzles. Hopefully we’ll see a Picross S2, Picross S3, Picross S4, Picross S5, Picross S6, etc. in the coming months and years.

#7: Forza Motorsport 7

I have a LOT of complaints about this game.

The single player campaign sucks. I haven’t played a mainline Forza Motorsport game since 4, as I didn’t get an Xbox One until recently. Therefore, I don’t know what the campaigns were like in 5 and 6, but apparently 7 was supposed to make the campaign races feel like an actual racing series, with more realistic points distributions and all that. Great in theory, but the execution is terrible. In real racing, even the best drivers lose more than half of their races. In order to beat a series in Forza 7, you have to win every race in the series. Forza Horizon 3 did it right by not requiring you to win every race; you could finish last in every race in a championship, and you’d still beat the championship. Credits rewards are tied to the difficulty of the AI, so you want to turn it up to get more money, but then you’re more likely to lose races, which makes you want to turn the difficulty down or compensate by using a bunch of assists, like the stupid one that makes you drive as fast on the grass as on the road. There’s also no qualifying, so everybody starts in the same position every race, and the AI tends to finish in the same position every race as well. You also have to finish every race in a series before moving to the next series, which is annoying. So basically, every mechanic in single player is designed against having fun. Great!

Then there’s the progression. It’s slow, to say the least. There was controversy surrounding the VIP credits bonus, as it initially only gave you a few temporary cards that doubled your credits. However, it was updated to double your credits after every race, so that’s good. It still feels like you don’t gain credits fast enough to be able to buy and upgrade as many cars as you want, and that’s after I abused a glitch that allowed you to get infinite rewards (which has since been patched).

The game is also crash-prone, to the point of being almost unplayable on PC. The PC version has a memory leak which crashes the game after a few minutes if you look at your garage or upgrade your car. The Xbox version is more stable, but it’s still crashed a couple of times for me.

You’d think all of these criticisms would push the game off the top ten, right? But here’s the thing: multiplayer is super fun. Sure, it takes about ten minutes to get into your first race, because you always end up in a lobby where the race has just started. And sure, half the races end up in disaster because the guy behind you crashed into you at full speed at the first corner, but when you get near the front of the pack and have a good race with some other drivers, it’s a blast. I tried ghost racing for the first time the other day, and it led to surprisingly close and fun racing.

So yeah, Forza 7 is a pretty fun game, as long as you only play multiplayer.

#6: Monogolf

Decent mobile games are hard to come by these days. For a while, my go-to phone game was True Skate, but then it stopped working on my phone. Thanks, Huawei! Before that, I played Desert Golfing, but it got a bit boring after 3,000 holes. I saw Monogolf in the Google Play Store recently, thought it looked cool, and downloaded it. Now it’s my new go-to game.

Like many phone-based golf games (believe me, I’ve played a lot), you simply drag on the screen to point where you want the ball to go, and how fast it should go. The catch is that you have to get a hole-in-one on each hole. If you don’t, you lose a life. Beat as many holes as possible until you run out of lives. It’s super fun to try and beat your record, and you often do, as you’re constantly unlocking new lives. You also unlock extra level packs for reaching certain milestones.

The game’s art style is also really cool. A lot of mobile games go for the modern look, but it ends up looking cheap. Monogolf’s graphics don’t, helped by the variety of vivid colors and textures on the holes.

As far as in-app purchases are concerned, you can pay about $4.50 to unlock everything, including all of the pieces for course creation and the maximum number of lives, but everything can also be unlocked through normal playing.

I said a lot about Monogolf. The top five games are all Switch games, that wasn’t intentional, sorry.

#5: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Because I liked the four games above this one better. That’s not to say Breath of the Wild isn’t a great game, because it is. And it deserves the overwhelming praise it’s gotten, too. I’ve just never been a huge fan of RPG or adventure games. Having never played more than a few hours of a Zelda game before, I expected to only play the game for a few hours just because using the Switch was a novelty at the time. However, I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected. Running around the vast open world is fun, as are the shrines. Somehow, I managed to defeat a Divine Beast before finding a single korok seed, so now there’s a korok seed permanently in the middle of my Divine Beast orbs in my inventory. I really need to go back and beat the two Divine Beasts I didn’t get so I can try out the DLC, because that skeleton bike looks super cool.

#4: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

So this is just an updated version of Mario Kart 8, which came out three years ago. Some might say that makes it ineligible for 2017 awards, but I don’t care.

Deluxe adds several new gameplay mechanics, new characters and karts, and an updated Battle Mode. The addition of a second item box makes for an even more hectic experience than Not_Deluxe, and also adds a bit of an extra layer of strategy. Should you go for the double item box, or will someone else snatch it up, leaving you with no items? The triple boost is also nice. Deluxe adds the Inklings from Splatoon as playable characters, which automatically makes the game twice as good (this is a scientifically provable fact). The Battle Mode is also really good, although I haven’t played it that much, because regular racing is so great. Given how all of this was added on to an already-great game, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is probably the best game in the series, and arguably the best racing game this generation (the other major contender being Forza Horizon 3).

#3: Puyo Puyo Tetris

Yes, I know this came out years ago. I imported a Vita copy back in 2015 for my PSTV that I never use. However, I’m including it in this list because it didn’t receive an English release until this year, which means that I can actually read the menus and story.

It turns out that combining two of the best puzzle games ever made creates another great puzzle game. Who would have thought? The story mode is great fun, and the story itself is surprisingly enjoyable, particularly the part where Schezo makes a bunch of innuendos. As far as the main modes go, Swap mode is objectively the best mode, as both players play both Puyo Puyo and Tetris, and do so on an even playing field. Versus mode is the next best, particularly when both players are playing the same game. Puyo vs. Tetris matches can be a bit lopsided, due to the two games having different garbage rules. Big Bang mode is alright too, particularly the Puyo version. You should avoid the Party and Fusion modes though, they’re bad.

Playing online is super fun, although most people play Tetris, unsurprisingly. Playing against someone at a similar skill level results in super tense and exciting matches, often with both players scrambling to clear enough garbage to be able to make a decent combo again. Lopsided matches do happen pretty often, though. Fortunately, you can disable matches in modes you don’t like, even in ranked mode. I usually just play Swap and Versus, although I’ll sometimes play Big Bang as well.

#2: Super Mario Odyssey

While a lot of games recently have focused on huge, expansive worlds, with various places to do things, Odyssey instead has relatively small levels with things to do EVERYWHERE. There are essentially as many moons in this game as there are korok seeds in Breath of the Wild, which means that moons are probably 50 feet apart from each other on average. There’s always something new to do that won’t take more than a couple of minutes when you go back to a particular level (unless you’ve gotten all the moons on that level, of course, but even then you might have to go back for a thing or two…). Some people have said that it feels like busy work to get all of the moons, and it is to some extent, but I found it wasn’t that difficult to get most of, if not all the moons in a level in a few-hour session or two.

New Donk City is one of my favorite levels in any video game, ever. The music, atmosphere, and level design are all so fantastic that I had fun for hours just messing around, jumping through the city and up to the top of buildings. It’s definitely the standout level of the game IMO.

Mario has probably the best movement I’ve ever felt in any video game. There are so many different things he can do that I feel like I still haven’t learned all of his abilities, even though I’ve 100%ed the game. The jump -> throw cap -> dive to cap -> jump off cap -> throw cap again -> dive to cap again mechanic is super fun to perform, and not as complicated as it sounds. It takes a couple of tries to get used to, but it’s very intuitive once you get used to it.

The capture ability is also amazing. It surprisingly doesn’t feel gimmicky at all, as each of the objects you can capture let you do the things you’d want to do in a given level. Cheep-Cheeps can let you swim more quickly, Goombas let you walk on ice without slipping around, posts let you spring up the sides of buildings, and so on. My favorite object to capture is probably the pokey thing in Bowser’s Castle that I don’t remember the name of that lets you snap to and spring up walls, although it’s also one of the more finnicky objects to use.

Overall, SMO is probably the best platformer I’ve ever played, and I thoroughly enjoyed 100 percenting it. It would be my game of the year, except I happened to like one game even more. Can you guess what it is?

For comparison, I played one game for more than 100 hours in 2016, Forza Horizon 3, and three games for more than 100 hours in 2015: Super Mario Maker, Rocket League, and Splatoon. Super Mario Maker and Rocket League are probably two of my top ten games of all time, and Forza Horizon 3 isn’t far behind. Splatoon would also be one of my top ten favorite games, if it wasn’t for the fact that Splatoon 2 is objectively so much better.

If you’ve never played Splatoon, the goal is basically to paint the floor with more ink than the other team (also you should play it right now). It sounds silly, but it’s super fun. The ranked modes are also great, and your rank is now broken up per mode, instead of all the modes contributing to the same rank. That’s great, because now you don’t have to only play one ranked mode if you’re better at that mode than the others.

There are a bunch of new gear items, some of which are really cool. I really like the tye-dye shirt, and also the jungle hat that everyone hates. You can also wear a plant if you really want to. I need to make it as clear as possible that the visual aesthetic of this game just oozes with coolness. It’s probably the coolest game I’ve ever played.

There are several new weapon types, too. The Splat Dualies are neat because you can dash twice while firing, making yourself a difficult target. The Splat Brella gives you a shield, but it isn’t very useful in practice IMO.

The new stages feel a lot more open than the stages in Splatoon 1. Humpback Pump Track has an incredible name and is a great smaller level, while Mako Mart has a more open feel, and the supermarket design is fantastic. It’s definitely my favorite level in the series. Most of my favorite stages from Splatoon 1 have made also their way to the sequel, including Port Mackerel, Kelp Dome, Walleye Warehouse, and Moray Towers (yes, I like that map).

Splatoon 2’s single player campaign is similar to the first game’s, with the added twist that you have to use various different weapons throughout the missions, instead of just the Splattershot. This adds a lot of replay value, as you now have to beat each level with each different weapon to 100 percent (or 1000 percent) the campaign. I’m about halfway through doing this, and I intend on finishing it eventually.

Salmon Run is new to Splatoon 2, and it’s a great new mode. You have waves of hordes of enemies that want to murder you, and you have to murder them first. There are probably much better explanations of the mode available. It also makes you try out new weapons, as the weapon you use is randomly assigned at the start of each wave from a set of four weapons. My main complaint with this mode is that I wish there were more rotations with completely random weapons, as a lot of the rotations with preset weapons tend to have a lot of weapons with low firing rates, which makes the mode more difficult and arguably less fun. Also, you can only play the mode on certain days, which is kind of silly.

Splatoon 2 is one of those games that’s greater than the sum of its parts. On paper, it sounds cool, but not as amazing as it really is. I almost didn’t buy the first Splatoon, which is something I have a hard time believing now (the same thing is true for Rocket League). It’s hard to put into words why, but the finished product, with all the great gameplay mechanics and super cool style blended together, is simply amazing. It’s more fun and cool than any other game I’ve played this year, so it’s an easy choice for my Game of the Year.
