Isak smiles, studying Even with one narrowed eye.  Even shuffles closer, smiling back, but withdraws his hand at the sight of Isak wincing, again, as he accidentally brushes his thumb over the tip of Isak’s nose.

“I’m sorry.” Even feels his own smile falter.  “For getting you into this whole...thing.”

“Don’t be.” Isak’s upper lip curls.  “I was the one who, uh. Started it.”

Even shrinks back a little.  Thinks of Isak’s vibrating presence outside the bar, the ferocity of his stare as he’d strided up to Mikael.  His red knuckles in the emergency room after, grip tight around Even’s hand.

All the questions Isak has asked him over the past weeks.  His knitted eyebrows as Even tried, with increasing desperation, to shrug them off, like it was nothing.  Nothing that Isak should care about.  The hurt and confusion Even had known must be in there, behind Isak’s suspicious eyes.  How helpless Even felt knowing that he was the reason for it.

He never meant to keep secrets from Isak. There were just these things Even never knew how to tell him.  These ugly, difficult memories he’d hoped that he could leave behind.
