Also jakov being in shadow the whole time was a really clever move, and how he starts above her but eventually comes down to her level. It shows their shifting power dynamic - at first he’s waiting for her, and they’re equals, having both cheated on the other. But as she finds out the truth, their levels become more and more apparent until jakov makes the active effort to reach out for her.

So well put @bengiyo! Especially your focus on the audience and their input into defining the genre through their interests! A scholar, Kuzuko Suzuki, interviewed BL writers to try to get a hold on what exactly BL was in an article called, "Yaoi/BL Temrinology and Classifications," and the close participation of the audience was one of the key continuities she and the writers noted, whereas genre conventions really through some of the major authors for a loop even though they participated in them once they knew what was expected at the time.

I think getting so stuck on the genre conventions hampers a lot of conversation and the potential for the genre to experiment and grow. That rigidity also conceals the genre's origins in JUNE stories and the input from new knowledge and audiences about queerness.

New rules and approaches can be adapted without disrupting something's belonging to a genre. We don't, for example, deny most romance stories from belonging to that classification despite their lack of a marriage at the end, a plot that was the original expectation in that genre.

In fact, I'd say that the romance genre sits within a bigger grouping that aligns better with the audience's current use of the "BL" label: Chick-lit (Chick-flicks, for cinema). Women's media, if we wanna be less pejorative, is defined less by conventions than the Romance genre (or genres in general) and much more clearly defined by its main subjects--women--and intended audience--people interested in women's stories. Some would say women are the intended audience but the category would not be what it is without queer men's consumption and participation.

You have plenty of romance and romantic-comedies within the Chick-Flick genre, but you also have... Tragedies (The Notebook, Terms of Endearment, One Day) Friendship films (The Women, Thelma & Louise, Waiting to Exhale) Coming-of-age (Clueless, Legally Blonde, Now & Then) Sports (A League of Their Own, Love & Basketball, Bend It Like Beckham)

You'll also see plenty of more distant genres explored under this header, although I'd add the caveat that, unless its full-on romance, films that mash-up with other genres usually have an element of comedy or lightness to keep it within the chick-flick realm--Jennifer's Body and The Craft can be considered horror chick-flicks while The VVitch or The Descent, despite their female focus and feminist themes, cannot. The ages range, the number of main characters shift, and the emphasis on romance varies, but the focus on girlhood and womanhood is consistent.

TLDR: I think it's correct to say rather than its former use to dictate certain generic tropes and beat requirements like strictly happy endings, fans currently use "BL" as a term to define media intended for an audience of people interested in stories that positively center boys loving boys and men loving men. How the creators choose to 'positively center' them has changed throughout the genre's history and continues to be explored.

The people on here getting mad about one couple getting too much screen time or another not doing enough in 4Minutes are the same to me as the booktok people who can’t read anything without romance. Sometimes it’s about storytelling that makes you scream into your pillow every week idk what else to fucking tell you

y'all I'm sooo happy jenny had them sleep together. apart from being a cinematic masterpiece, it makes such important points and also sets up future conflicts!

in the book losing her virginity was portrayed in a way that almost made it seem like if she lost it, she would lose her purity and sweetness with it. this made so clear that a) she got to do it on her own terms with the person she most wanted to do it with in the world and was constantly setting the tone and b) life goes on after you have sex!!? so often in YA novels it's portrayed as this ultimate obstacle that is impossible to overcome. I loved everything about this including the FUCKING KISSING YOU aka romeo and juliet aka skam aka jenny I love you + the way conrad kept checking in with her to make she was okay and he didn't put pressure on her

I feel like she's not going to sleep with Jeremiah, even though they date for a long time. he's going to be understanding of the fact that she doesn't want to go further until he finds out that belly and conrad have already had sex which will lead him to cheat or perform some other questionable action out of spite and anger bc he is a child (jeremiah slander only on this page)

I just finished watching Skam (Norway) today and let’s just say I’m not kidding when I say this is one of the BEST shows I’ve ever watched. I did take a lot of time to watch all the seasons (spanning over one year) but I enjoyed each and every moment of it. Well, some a little less than others. Hence, I have some thoughts and please forgive my yapping.

Okay so Season 1. I actually liked it quite a lot. The acting was good, and it gave a nice start to the whole story.

The getting together of the girls was the highlight obviously, but I really liked the portrayal of Eva in this, as a kind of lost teenager who doesn’t have a lot of direction in her life and is mostly dependent on her boyfriend.

I did think the Isak plot line in this was a little badly done, but I guess it was necessary for the big reveal in the end.

I think the fact that Eva was able to resolve things with Ingrid was very unrealistic, considering they had literally been besties and she basically stole her man. But really idk.

Talking about Jonas, he was majorly gaslighting Eva during the season so I think their relationship was a little immature. Classic right person wrong time.

Penetrator Chris is SO HOT. Especially in that mf smoky eye makeup istg. But he’s a giant asshole and we do not support him.

Season 2. Okay. First let’s start with the showstealer. Eskild my man. I don’t think Eskild is appreciated enough in the whole series but I absolutely love him!! He is so mature, and is such a good friend. I love the dynamic between him and Noora and even him and Linn.

Now let’s address the elephant in the room because why not? I did not like Noorhelm all that much. William never had much of a character development and we never get to see him expressing a lot of emotions. I forever stand by the opinion that Noora was too good for him. Many people talk about William’s support of Noora’s decision to not have sex, but really, that’s like settling for the bare minimum that can be expected from a decent person.

I think the dickhead of a brother had more personality than William. So in conclusion, season 2 did not really impress me but I’d watch it again for Eskild.

Eva hooking up with Chris?? The guy she cheated on her ex with? Can’t say I like this.

Season 3 is SO well done. There’s no question about it. I love Isak’s slow acceptance of his sexuality. From being a closeted gay guy who made homophobic comments to fit in, to a happy and out gay guy in a relationship.

Absolutely adore the boys. Jonas, Mahdi, Magnus. I especially loved Magnus and his take on the whole situation.

Eskild coming in and stealing the show yet again?!!

Emma and Sonja are VICTIMS. As much as I love Evak, they fucked their girlfriends over pretty bad and I hate them for it. Also, Emma is soooooooooo pretty.

The story of Even. His whole character portrayal. The picturisation of his mental issues. Chef’s kiss.

Minute by minute??? Are you trying to kill me here??? It is SO wholesome and they both have matured so much, especially Isak, dealing with his sexuality plus his boyfriend’s mental issues so delicately.

Their chemistry. Their chemistry. Their chemistry.

Sonja should NOT have apologised.

Overall, this season is tied with the fourth as my favourite.

Season 4. Sana is my favourite character hands down. She is portrayed so well, we see all her insecurities, beliefs so beautifully.

Yousana is my favourite couple. Evak is a close second.

The understanding between them, the intellectual conversations, the level of maturity. Just wondrous.

I did think the whole situation with the russ bus was overdone. I never really understood why Sana was so involved with it in the first place. This could easily have been summed up in one episode leaving time for more Yousana development.

Yousef is such a green flag omg. He’s literally the cutest out of all skam boys( my opinion). I just wish he had more screen time.

Elias and Sana??? Whatever bits and pieces we got to see of their relationship were GOLD.

I. Love. My. Girls. So. Much. I just wish Sana was shown interacting more with all of them, not just Noora. Also Yousef and Noora working together to thaw Sana??

I canNOT stress this enough. Yousef and Sana are the best couple ( besides Evak obviously). The chemistry, the flirting, everything was done so right that it got me blushing furiously through the screen. And they managed to do all this without showing any kind of physical contact. Just lovely. The way they counter each other’s opinions with such delicacy and respect makes me believe that they are definitely going to last.

The situation with Even and Mikael and all the balloon squad boys should have been given more screen time.

The way Sana’s faith and her relationship with her family were handled are commendable. We see the dilemma, the cogs of her brain working, and how she accepts her fate and doesn’t sway from her beliefs. I strongly believe that her and Yousef will handle their differences maturely and still come out to be a strong couple.

I SWEAR SHE AND I ARE SOULMATES?????? Cutest shit I’ve ever seen.

Sana and Isak’s friendship means so much to me. In Season 3, we see her rising above her opinions and respecting homosexuality. Here we see Isak figuring Sana out and helping her see beyond her strong opinions. And wdym Sana??? You are best buds.

Okay. The last episode. I absolutely loved it. It’s one of the best season finales I’ve ever watched. We go into the lives of all the girls and some of the guys too. I literally teared up at the Eskild and Linn part!!( idk why they still address Chris as penetrator Chris when his face is literally on the screen like people we know it’s not our girl?? Idk I find it extremely funny). I wish they had shown more of Vilde and Chris’ friendship in the past and not just the final episode. The Even part was absolutely incredible. His insecurities, his fears, and we see him pacifying Isak and not the other way around. Yousef texting Sana from Turkey?? And saying he’ll take her there?? My heart melted.

I literally don’t think Noorhelm is going to last long even though they have reconciled. Something just seems off. Joneva is back??? Didn’t really like the buildup but I guess they could be a good couple as they are more mature than the last time.

Okay. So that sums it up more or less. My favourite was season 4, closely followed by season 3. My favourite characters were Sana and Eskild, they were just so amazing. I related to Sana fiercely all through the show.

Tears were clouding her vision and so she rubbed the heels of her hands against her eyes before being able to focus them on Nancy. She was looking at the state of Robin, hovering helplessly next to her. God, what was her life?!

“What the hell happened?”

“I- I can’t find my jack-” Robin’s voice broke with a pitiful sob.

“Your jacket? Are you leaving?” Nancy prodded, worried brow creasing.

“Just, I need to get out of here,” Robin wiped her wet cupid’s bow on her thumb. “Can you help with that?”

Without further ado, Nancy opened a closet door and picked out two leather jackets, neither of which looked hers judged by the size, but at the same time they seemed to be exactly what she was looking for. She threw them over her one arm and the other she used to pull Robin out the front door with her. Through a throng of incoming guests, they ran to the lift and put on the huge biker jackets, neither uttering a word. It was suddenly so quiet after all the ruckus.

They went all the way down to the dimly lit basement parking and there Nancy beelined toward a highly polished, sleek motorcycle. It was Eddie’s, everybody knew that. From her (Eddie’s) jacket pocket, Nancy fished out keyes that Robin assumed were a perfect match for the bike.

“Are we committing a felony right now?” Robin’s tear-streaked face scrunched up in question.

“I wish,” An amused smile twitched Nancy’s thin lips. “But this is all approved by the owner.”

That didn’t do much to ease Robin’s nerves. “We shouldn’t- I’m not getting up on that thing.”

Nancy tugged on her wrist encouragingly, dragging her over to the bike. “C’mon, you know you want to.”

She was correct. It was a magnificent ride and there was something thrilling about the unsafety of it all. Part of the appeal, and whatnot. Also, Robin did love chasing the high.

“But we shouldn’t.”

“You wanted to get out. This is your ticket.”

“Are you drunk?” Robin asked, trailing her finger against the shiny black frame.

Nancy threw a leg over the motorcycle to straddle the leather seat, rolling her eyes while she did it. “I’m not planning to kill you, you know.”

The other corner of Robin’s mouth tugged slightly upwards. “That wasn’t an answer.”

Nancy sighed, reaching out her hand for Robin to take. “Do you trust me?”

Robin hesitated, eyeing Nancy carefully. She looked fucking godly on the bike, face fixed with determination and torso covered in black leather. ‘Nobody Robin couldn’t handle’— as if! She was in deep shit.

With an unbelieving laugh, she accepted the offered hand and climbed onto the motorcycle. She pressed up against Nancy, arms wrapping tightly around her waist and holding on for dear life. Holding down on the clutch switch, Nancy started the bike and Robin buried her nose in the older girl’s neck at the rev of the engine. Her heart hammered against Nancy’s back, impatient for the takeoff.

Between one breath and another, the garage door opened and they kicked off.

not sure if you still answer skam questions (currently on a rewatch) but: I know that different characters have different dialects (especially Eva with one from Bergen, William & Vilde(?) with a standard Oslo-city dialect, and Noora also has a distinctive one. But to me, someone that only knows around 10 words in Norwegian I can't really hear a clear difference. What are some good signs to hear the differences?

Without you knowing the language, that's gonna be a very difficult question to answer.

Josefine does a good job hiding her dialect as Noora, but when it shines through, she get's more sing-songy, if that makes sense. The tonal peaks and valleys are larger compared to the others.

Lisa's Bergen dialect is just on all the time for Eva, except a couple of times when she's imitating an Oslo dialect. The most noticeable sign is her r's, she does guttural, back-of-the-throat "French" r's, and not the trilling or flapping r's of East Norwegian.

Bergensk is also a dialect of Nynorsk, which uses different pronouns. For example, "I, me, you" in East Norwegian is "jeg, meg, deg", with a soft j-sound at the end, but in Bergensk, it's "eg, meg, deg", with a hard g-sound at the end. Also, interrogative pronouns like "who, what, how" are "hvem, hva, hvordan" with a v-sound in East Norwegian, but she says "kem, ka, kordan" with a hard k-sound at the start.

As always, the only way to get a feeling for it is to listen, listen, and listen more to the differences. Here's a guy doing an impression of a ton of different Norwegian dialects:
