You know I see a surprising number of people sometimes complaining that it doesn’t make sense for straight men to enjoy the song “Good Luck Babe” by Chappell Roan, and that got me thinking about how frequent it is for both gay and straight people to think that their experience with love is exclusive to them or T heir sexuality.

The truth is that the VAST majority of experiences people have when it comes to love are pretty much universal. Quite literally, from an experiential perspective, love is love.

This is actually ESPECIALLY true, I’ve found, among people who date the same gender. Lesbians and straight men have a lot more to talk about than some people may think.

In fact, I would even venture to get even more specific about the song itself and say that, among people that exclusively or primarily date women, it is actually an EXTREMELY common and relatable scenario to have known a girl that broke up with you because she had this weird idealized version of herself that she made up and is so obsessed with meeting that version’s standards that she feels she has to break up with you because you don’t match up with that future version of herself. Even though she DOES love you and you’re both happy, she genuinely considers that idealized version MORE important than her own happiness.

And that’s why Chappell Roan’s “Good Luck Babe” is the modern cultural retelling of “Sk8rboy” by Avril Lavigne
