Hello! It’s been a while. Actually it really hasn't, but as someone who’s life is mostly made up of sleep, work and concerts, it has felt like a while. So to make up for it, I went to two concerts in a row this weekend. 

Saturday night I went to Bowery Ballroom (probably one of my favorite smaller venues in NY) to see Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds. The night opened with Smooth Hound Smith, a guy and a gal from Nashville who were both equally gorgeous musicians. They both took turns singing and damn they were just good. I would say Smooth Hound Smith are a modern interpretation of early blues, rock and soul  that harkens back to the traditions of hazy front porch folk songs as well as leg stomping rockabilly music. They are without a doubt worth checking out. Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds are based right out of Brooklyn, but have roots in the Catskills. They have such a vibrant stage presence as a seven-piece soul/rock band. I 100% have a girl crush on the dynamic lead singer, Arlie. Part of the reasoning be that I want my name so badly to be Arlie, but most of the reasoning being she is a fucking bad ass. Between her bopping and dancing, her eyes bulging out of her head, her raspy screaming, her tongue sticking out and her ability to sing, play guitar and accompany the drummer on his drums, she made the Lower East Side swoon saturday night. I personally think their live performance is 10x stronger than their recorded performance. Which is true for a lot of bands that have a bunch of instruments involved, which is why you should obsessed with going to concerts too.

The show was sold out but we were able to weasel our way up to the very very front. I don't always do this but I do find the entire experience of a show to be so much better when you’re up close and personal. You almost feel like you're apart of the band, or that they're only singing to you. It’s also ideal placement to lock eyes with attractive band members. It’s also ideal placement to have the guitarist almost fall on you and knock you out with the neck of his guitar, this happened. 

My friend showed me Sister Sparrow a couple months ago. The first song I listened to was “Sugar”, and if you’re a first time Sister Sparrow-er I recommend that one too. You can't not like it. Even if you’re not too into soul, that is the ultimate feel-good song about just wanting to make some lovin’. It’s perfect for cleaning your room, girl’s nights, or roadtripping. They played that of course and the crowed in unison swayed and stomped. They also played my favorite, “Don’t Be Jealous”. Between the low guitar chords and the swanky harmonica solos, this song actually sounds like what jealousy feels like and its sexy/dirty/angry and the way Arlie screams in the end just makes you want to burst. Which I know that sounds unpleasant, but it’s wonderful. One of the main lines in the chorus is “Don’t be jealous, It’s just me and the fellas” and seeing her in person with a mischievous smile on her face singing those words is just awesome because it’s her and six other men. And she's just killing it. They’re all super talented but you cannot take your eyes off of her pretty much the whole time, even when she wasn't singing. There is definitely a feminist-y narrative attached to this band which is bomb.com.

They did a lot of great ones including “Fight” and “Mama Says” dedicated to Arlie and her big brother, Jackson, who was on the harmonica’s mother. It felt very genuine. At the end they brought out about 4 or 5 more people on instruments and when on this soul trip that I wish I could never leave. Trombones, baritone saxophone, trumpets, you name it. Everyone just went nuts.

If you need more soul in your life, start with Sister Sparrow. And before i go, there is something I want to address. There have been quite a few people I’ve talked to about music and bands and whatnot, and I recall them saying “I only listen to male singers” or “I don’t really like female artists as much” or “I just like dudes better!” (their voices) or anything along those lines. First of all, what. Second of all, maybe you’re just relying on pop music or whats on the radio? I feel like theres a strong female hand in the world of pop, don't rely on that. Third of all, expaaaand your horizons! There are so many incredible female singers and Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds proves that. I made a playlist on Spotify compiled of all female artists and invited all my girlfriends to contribute, and they have and its delicious.
