When I got home from tai chi practice a flock of hundreds of what seem to be pine siskins had descended upon my block. They are tiny and loud. I've never experienced this before, but I guess they tend to erratically migrate about the country in giant, noisy flocks.

A little fall surprise
The other day, a flock of Pine Siskins visited. From afar, they are often mistaken for House Finches but they do differ in size - they are a lot smaller, more the size of a Goldfinch - in color - they wear fancy yellow stripes on their wings - and their beak is pointy rather than curved and thick. They are one of the most hyper and aggressive birds I have seen, this photo is typical 😆 I rarely ever have them here, so this was fun to see.

BOTD: Pine Siskin
Tumblr media
Photo: Doug Greenberg
"Although it is patterned like a sparrow, its shape, actions, and callnotes all reveal that this bird is really a goldfinch in disguise. After nesting in the conifer woods, Pine Siskins move out into semi-open country, where they roam in twittering flocks. They often descend on fields of thistles or wild sunflowers, where they cling to the dried flower heads, eating seeds. In winter they sometimes invade southward in big numbers, with flocks coming to feeders along with American Goldfinches."

09/02/2024-Lakeside and home
Photos taken in this set are of; views on a walk through the wet landscape, Moorhen, Great Crested Grebe, Siskins which it was wonderful to see so many of in trees and flying over making a very pleasant collective gushing sound which was wonderful to hear and daffodils with one flower just starting to peep through. Goldcrest, Blue and Great Tit, alder catkins, Jackdaw and Starlings seen nicely at home and Robin at Lakeside and home were other highlights today.
The flooded areas and thick mud alongside the charming immersive wild spectacle of the Siskins kept my mind firmly on the natural elegance and wonder of winter today, whilst the Great Crested Grebes in all their finery, ever more beautiful blossom in the landscape a key theme of this week and it being light enough for my first Friday after work evening walk of the year had my beloved spring whispering over my shoulder.

Today I had the pleasure of watching a large flock of siskins and redpolls in the trees. Some moved so far down that they could be photographed. A few even ventured down to the ground.

December 24, 2023 - Andean Siskin (Spinus spinescens) Found in the Andes in parts of Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador, these finches live in open habitats with some trees and bushes. Foraging in pairs and groups on or near the ground, they eat seeds from a variety of plants, as well as flowers. Little is known about their breeding behavior, though adults in breeding condition have been found in August, they have been seen building nests in June, and recently fledged chicks were observed in March.

A group of Pine Siskins visited, sharing food with Juncos and Goldfinches. It is funny to see them somewhat get along because Pine Siskins and Goldfinches can be quite feisty despite their small size. The Siskins and Juncos will soon start migrating north.

03/01/2024-Winnall Moors and a quick look at Lakeside this morning and bits at home
Photos taken in this set are of; Moorhen and Carrion Crow feeding at Lakeside, one of two gorgeous mushrooms with moss nearby at Winnall Moors, beautiful views at the peaceful Winnall Moors, pretty and enticing Siskins at Winnall Moors which were a joy to watch, Mallards at Winnall Moors and sky at home towards sunset.
I was very pleased to see my first Little Grebe of the year on the River Itchen at Winnall Moors, a lovely bird to see diving and on the surface a few times. Other standout species seen at Winnall Moors were Goldcrest, charming views of Chiffchaff again, Chaffinch, Grey Heron seen nicely again flying over, a key bird so far this year Grey Wagtail, Mute Swan, great views of a Song Thrush with it heard well too, Long-tailed Tit, Great Tit, Blue Tit, rose hip and ivy with articulate Cetti's Warbler heard. Burdock seed heads, Coot and Mallard were good to see at Lakeside with Song Thrush, Blue Tit and Great Tit heard well.
