In 1843, a young Richard Francis Burton (slide 4) sails out to India with East India Company. It is obvious that Burton is different from other soldiers in the Raj as he's always eager to explore the language and mingles with the local rather than staying in his camp. Burton whom people know as the explorer, scholas and soldier, has translated so many notable literary works while living an adventurous life. One of them is the Perfumed Garden, an Arabic sex manual and a puece of erotic literature written in the 15th centuty by Sheikh Nefzawi, a Tunisian writer (slide 5). Are you familiar with Burton's translated work? Have you read one of his work? A translation of 1001 Nights? I always fall in love with the story of Scheherazade and the Soltan (Slide 6-8) I am going to see how Burton is depicted in the popular culture - a novel through Iliya Troyanov's The Collector of Words. The book follows Burton's travels in the Middle East and Africa from the eyes of the people around him. Remember back then, when Burton made it to Mecca then he went to Damascus, Syria with his wife Isabel Burton where he was deployed? Ah... I cannot wait to see where these people and Burton lead me.
