Okay so here's the rundown of everything that happened with the radio station because omg is it some drama.
In the 90's, there were a lot more independently-run radio stations. There wasn't IHeartRadio and there wasn't SiriusFM or JackFM. A dude could just have a radio station frequency and start a radio station as long as they complied with FCC regulations. And one of these radio stations in Columbus was an alternative station called CD101.
That frequency was sold to a classical station, which is fine because the exchange was friendly. And then the station moved to a different frequency, CD102.5.
So I know it may seem like radio DJ's are just weirdos with microphones and that's just not true- they are TALENTED weirdos with a microphone. You have to be personable, you have to know about the music you're playing, you have to be enthusiastic. And this station was pretty good about programming- they played local music, they played deep cuts, they played weird shit. There were programs for oddball and punk and goth music. They ran charities, they were at local festivals, they were in parades. Their radio station even had a small concert venue attached to it and they would invite visiting musicians to play. Like it really was about community.
But.
Radio stations are expensive, and they get more expensive every year, and in 2020 they were unable to renew their FCC license.
And then a couple months later, they were back again under CD 92.9. A radio station rented out the frequency to them and they were able to get back on the air. It was like nothing ever happened.
I'm not going to know what happened between the owner the frequency (Mark) and the owner of the station (Randy) because there's a lot of people talking about Mark overcharging on rent and Randy being late or short on payments.
An agreement was drawn up to have Randy buy the frequency over a period of (I think) 5 years. But the price was high and the terms of termination were brutal (if he was even one day late on a payment, it constituted termination of the contract). And Randy found those terms to be unreasonable.
So, they announced that the radio station would be going off the air February 1, 2024. And we're all pretty upset! Like, not to be like 'this station saved my life,' but this was a pretty consistent source of event news for me and its how I learned about a lot of concerts and artists. They played one of my friend's bands pretty often and its like 'hell yeah, I know that flutist!'
The DJs of CD92.9 said their good-byes on Facebook.
Meanwhile...
The new DJ of the new station announced that it was always his destiny run the station, and that the new station would be More local music, More deep cuts, More weird shit- and No Billie Eilish. "Out with the old, in with the new."
On one of the old DJ's good-bye posts, the new DJ tried to recruit him to the new station.
"Really? You're trying to poach me on my good-bye post?"
Mark makes a statement that the station will be committed to 'continuing the legacy of CD92.9' and will be using the same programming, the same music, the same DJ's.
Randy says 'the fuck it will, that wasn't the deal' and files a C&D. The DJ's are allowed to work for the new station if they so please, but the new station is not going to inherit shit. They cannot use the same programming, their staff, or any of the thousands of recordings they've use in the past 30 years. Any branding or attempt to brand as similar to CD92.9 is a breach of contract.
A facebook group formed around the support of CD 92.9. How to help, how to get their online stream onto your phone, upcoming events, sponsors to support, and a healthy amount of bitching. Admittedly, some of the posts were REAL stretches- like... I'm sorry darling, I know you want it to happen, but you are NOT going to get them on copyright infringement because their red X logo looks kind of like a similar red X logo from a radio station in Milwaukee.
CD92.9 goes down, 93X goes up.
He does play some more uncommon music, sure. But he doesn't announce who the artist is so its kind of like... what's the point in that? If you just play a local band, but we don't know who the local band is, how are we going to go to their concerts? He'd also talk smack about some bands and its like... don't? You're a public face now.
And then there's the radio edits, which he chose not to play on occasion, so the radio was full of f-bombs. FCC violation.
And as a DJ, simply not charismatic. Like I realize he's not Blorbo from my radio, but like I said- DJing is a skill.
So I just didn't listen. It wasn't worth my time to try. I found a different, less cool station to listen to in the car and I listened to the stream at home.
The mood of the facebook group shifted more towards support for the sponsors, events planned around 92.9, news about who is leaving and who is staying and we just kind of let 93X exist.
The promise of 'no Billie Eilish' fell through pretty quickly. Their music selection dropped to the usual 'alternative music' packet of Imagine Dragons and Twenty-One Pilots. And eventually...
They went off the air. After one month of airtime, it is now an oldies station.
93X DJ said 'well, congratulations you got what you wanted.' Which is half right. We wanted them to tank and our old station to succeed. We're still hopeful about the second part.
The Dispatch ran an article about the short-lived station. Ends with:
So just for like... summary-
Ya'll took over the station with a committed listener base, claimed that you'd be just continuing business as usual, tried to poach their talent, hired someone with no problem talking shit, and when your station failed...
... you want to blame a Facebook Group?
Are you a child?
Anyways, if you'd like to hear an alternative rock station in Columbus that's just doing their best, here's a link to the stream!

In a Feb 7 interview with SiriusFM, Noel spoke about being excited, and nervous, to return to scripted comedy with "Dick Turpin."
Noel: “I miss the Boosh, the Mighty Boosh, because it was a lot of fun…this was a little bit of a return to scripted comedy, which I hadn’t done for a while. I was a little nervous, about coming back to it, because the Boosh was such a cult hit, and a great experience. I always found it quite difficult to do comedy again, with someone else, and not Julian. It’s like we were married.”

Adore You
Or rather, let him adore who he wants.
The Adore You video is about how his fans treat Harry's partners. To Rolling Stone Harry said:
“This time I really felt so much less afraid to write fun pop songs. It had to do with the whole thing of being on tour and feeling accepted [...] It came late in the sessions: “Lights Up,” “Treat People with Kindness,” and “Adore You” were written in the final week this spring, in a burst of inspiration.
TPWK, Lights up and Adore You each have a message to fans:
Adore You's video asks fans to not make it impossible for him to date his partner(s) of his choosing
Lights up, Harry said it is about "stepping out on his own" the lyrics include "I'm not ever going back" (I infer to 1D)
TPWK is asking his fans to do just that, including him and the people he chooses to date.
Music Video
When asked by Capital FM (4:33) if Harry was the boy in the video, Harry first said it was a metaphor and he acted the part, then when followed up he said "it's a music video everyone!" The start of the video tells of superstitions and silly ideas. Everyone frowns, Harry has a brilliant smile. He is peculiar, the voiceover says:
No one ever meant to be mean towards him, but in a town grown used to how things were, no one knew what to do with something different.
Harry bottles up his rage, is depressed and goes to drown himself. He sees a fish and saving it saves Harry.
Who is the fish? When asked on SiriusFM, (3:00) Harry said, “Is the fish even a fish? Is the fish a metaphor? Who is the fish?” an Olivia is an emotion style answer to say the fish is a metaphor. There is
Taylor Swift has a famous Koi Guitar, called the Koi Living Jewel. the artwork reflects Taylor's guitar and the TVs refer to the fish as a Jewel Coat (Junior Jewel), However
The fish is grey like the salmon in a 1980 Children's book Louis the Fish. The book is about a vegetarian butcher who is turned into a fish. The book has an anti-vegetarian message. Harry is Pescatian. This is utter madness, it reminds me of him saying to Stern that sometimes his fans find unlikely similarities that aren't really there.
The fish is personifying his love for a partner and he is asking is fans to help and not attack the very real people he dates.
The fish constantly get's bigger, Harry does everything but the fish literally doesn't fit in his life. In the end he has to let the fish go and be alone because it is too hard for it to be with him.
The fish starts thrashing when the fisherman chops another fish. To me this is a metaphor for how the music industry and fans treats them. Harry repeats this in Music for a Sushi Restaurant where the shop only keeps him while is singing brings customers.
Seaview Cottage at 88 Seagull Lane is an easter egg for Harry's House (H= 8th letter) and Keep Driving: 'Choke her with a Seaview'. Seagull lane is a reference to Taylors shirt on the cover of 1989. And a townsperson receives a Message in a Bottle.
Harry eventually sails off alone powered by his screams. :(
When was it written
Harry said to Zane Lowe he played Liam Gallagher Fine Line in March 2019 but that Lights Up, Adore You and Treat People were all written later, in the last week. It was written with Amy Allen, who is based in LA. That places it after the Met Gala around 20 May 2019. He was in the studio on 15 May 2019.
Lyrics
Walk in your rainbow paradise (paradise) Strawberry lipstick state of mind (state of mind) I get so lost inside your eyes Would you believe it?
'Walk in your rainbow paradise' responds to Me!'s "Like a rainbow with all of the colors". Both refer to Out of the Woods "The rest of the world was black and white / But we were in screaming color.” Harry and Taylor refer to each other as all the colours. Me was released 4 weeks before Harry wrote Adore You.
Strawberry lipstick state of mind refers to Taylor's signature lip colour, referred to in Style 'Red Lip Classic thing you like' and Two Ghosts 'Same lips red, same eyes blue'.
You don't have to say you love me You don't have to say nothing You don't have to say you're mine
In Little Freak Harry expressed a similar idea of caring but not in a possessive way or asking for anything from her "I'm not worried about where you are / Or who you will go home to". This makes is clear they are not in a relationship.
Honey (ah) I'd walk through fire for you Just let me adore you Oh, honey (ah) I'd walk through fire for you Just let me adore you Like it's the only thing I'll ever do Like it's the only thing I'll ever do
Walk through fire means he is willing to go through the difficulty of fans not liking his relationships, he will lose fans, if his partner will just let him love them. In If I could Fly Harry said he would give up fame to be with his muse "I think I might give up everything, just ask me to"
Taylor sung about this difficulty dating Harry in:
Slut! "If they call me a slut / You know it might be worth it for once", and
Gold Rush "I don't like that anyone would die to feel your touch / Everybody wants you / Everybody wonders what it would be like to love you"
They also described this as guns or bullets in I know places and Sign of the Times.
You're wonder under summer skies (summer skies) Brown skin and lemon over ice Would you believe it?
This verse is describing a summer romance, (Brown skin, Lemonade, Summer Skies) which Taylor also did in this period in Cruel Summer.
Harry talks about his muse as summertime and butterflies in Olivia. He also said he would brown his skin while they waited for him in the Sky in Golden.
You don't have to say you love me I just wanna tell you somethin' Lately you've been on my mind
A similar line is in Little Freak: " I'm not worried about where you are / Or who you will go home to, I'm Just thinkin' about you"

Every Record I Own - Day 766: Donna Summer Love to Love You Baby
I've gotten a lot of mileage out this album over the last few years.
During the first summer of the pandemic, my husband and I took a road trip out to western Colorado to stay at an old cabin my grandfather built up on Grand Mesa. We took scenic routes the whole way, dipping down to Nevada to drive Highway 50 (the "loneliest road in America"), cruising around the canyon country of the four corners region, and driving the "million dollar highway" between Silverton, Durango, and Ouray. Our interactions with other people were minimal. It often felt like we were the last two people on earth.
It was a lot of driving, and we wound up listening to a lot of SiriusFM satellite radio in the car. In particular, we listened to a lot of the Studio 54 station, which is dedicated to disco. This choice was partially to appease the husband, but the endless pulse of disco also helped keep us awake and upbeat. It was also an attempt on my part to overcome some of my prejudices against that particular style of music, and I was excited whenever I'd find a track that resonated with me.
Somewhere along the trip, we heard Donna Summer's "Love to Love You Baby." Time already felt elastic during the pandemic, and that malleability became even more pronounced as we blazed across the open road and endless expanse of the Great Basin of the western US. But to have a seventeen-minute disco tune slowly unfurl and blossom over the airwaves as countless yellow lines passed beneath us effectively pushed us into a dream-like territory.
Love to Love You Baby was the first album to be released in the US by "Queen of Disco" Donna Summer. The album was produced by Italy's "Father of Disco" Giorgio Moroder and its steady groove, ebb-and-flow instrumentation, and provocative vocals proved to be a hit on the dance floor even if radio stations were averse to its long run-time and explicitly sexual nature.
For me, the allure of "Love to Love You Baby" is that it reminds me of the patient build-up of a classic side-spanning prog rock composition or the hypnotic repetition of one of Can's long-form jams. The song takes you on a journey across the entirety of side A. It's the perfect vibe for a road trip soundtrack.
Side B of Love to Love You Baby is a bit more traditional. "Full of Emptiness" is a solid torch song. "Need-A-Man Blues" provides a more succinct brand of throbbing disco. But the real gem of side two is "Pandora's Box"--a gospel-inflected soul song that deserves to be in constant rotation on FM radio.
Love to Love You Baby got played a lot during that summer. I ordered a lot of records online during the pandemic, but I figured I could find a copy of this LP in just about any used record store for a couple of bucks, so I would just wait until stores re-opened to pick up a copy. I would wind up waiting nearly two years before finding it in the wild. I was in Bellingham WA with SUMAC on one of my first post-lockdown tours when I popped into Everyday Music before soundcheck. Donna Summer was at the top of my shopping list. Unfortunately, they didn't have a copy in their racks. But as I was looking for other titles in their bins, I suddenly heard a familiar combo of hi-hat and sultry vocals come on the shop's speakers. I ran to the counter and asked if the album they were playing was for sale. The worker was stunned. "This was just something we pulled from a box of records someone left outside overnight," he explained. He pulled the copy of Love to Love You Baby off the turntable and handed it to me.
"No charge," he said with a smile.
Love to Love You Baby had been in heavy rotation during a long period of isolation, and now the actual LP serves as a kind of talisman to mark the end of that two-year stretch.

We Made It announcement! At last official confirmation is here: Louis' next single is We Made It, and it will be released this Thurs! The announcement is brilliant, overlaid on a double of the original clip that he posted in 2018 and that we've been circulating since. Perfect aesthetic perfect in joke nod to the fans which is perfect for what he's been saying is the song 'for the fans', flawless all around, bravo! The lyrics in the old clip were "I remember those nights, (me with you or being with you), cheap drinks through the whole night" but journalist Bree Player tweeted the lyrics from today's clip, drawing attention to the fact that it isn't actually the same clip and the lyrics are "meet you at your uni" in place of the "me with you" line which is maybe new, or maybe just sounds different in the new version. Cue a lot of discourse for not a lot of lyrics but it has been a slowish day... We'll see what the lyrics (and their context) are soon enough. The song will be debuted on the Sirius morning show Thurs at 8:30 am ET though of course it will first be played at the international listening parties! All of them take place tomorrow though due to the perpetual annoyance that is time zones, not at remotely the same time as each other; the first of the events will be happening in about nine hours. What country will leak info first?? Lay your bets! South America would be traditional but the Philippines have a massive head start timezone-wise so.... Some of the listening party hosts have asked for questions for Louis, as have many others, everyone wants to hear your questions for Louis this week! The most exciting opportunity to grill him is via a Most Requested Live Ask Me Anything which they tell us will be posted Nov 2. All at once this time then? Or will we be getting clips randomly and unexpectedly for months again? cause TBH I'm fine with that. He was also, last but not remotely least, announced as a guest for the Build Series! It's an online in-depth interview series, very serious and respectable. So cool! A few lucky fans will get to attend and sit a few feet away from him in the tiny studio and I do mean a few fans: get ready for a real fight to the death for this one there are gonna be like 30 seats yiiiikes.
Niall arrived back in the UK, went to a Derby match with his dad, posted an morning time not dressed yet dancing in the bathroom to his own song on the radio clip, and went on what seems to have been a successfully incognito trip to a London shopping mall on a weekend afternoon! Nice. He posted a series of pics from Flicker tour bidding the era farewell once again.
Also: interesting chatter out there about Irving Azoff's ongoing battle with the Radio Music License Committee over licensing fees, saying that artists are getting screwed over. It's been suggested that perhaps Harry is choosing not to pursue radio promo (and thus not buy into the payola, etc) in order to support this fight. If so maybe it's working; he's charting, and well, and thus getting radio play even while giving his promo dollars seemingly pretty much all to streaming. Obviously there are an array of things happening with probably multiple reasons of which that is just one piece, but it's an intriguing one.

Hang the DJ
As I drive halfway across the country and my husband flips through SiriusFM channels, I have come to the realization that I've never been a radio person. In middle school, I was obsessed with The Beatles and listened to them non-stop. My Walkman was always on me with an album or mixtape. When I got my own car, I kept mixes on hand for driving around (thanks Napster). I just can't stand most stuff that gets radio airplay and then the songs that I like they play so much that everyone hates them. For example, I really like Paramore and Ed Sheeran but since Tim listens to radio all the time, he hates their singles. This also leaves a gap in my pop culture knowledge but nothing I'm upset about. I know the good stuff. ;-)

Tues 15 Oct
SiriusFM urges Louis fans to listen tomorrow morning for, we're told, Big News! A "SURPRISE of EPIC PROPORTIONS" they said... then immediately spoiled their own big surprise posting, "Louis makes his return to the [show] next week for a hang and performance!" Listen to win chances to attend they say. He has a second US radio spot (that we know of) scheduled with JoJo Wright. Louis posted a selfie yesterday and registered We Made It as well as a news-to-us song called Perfect Now. Is Perfect Now a new song? The presence of cowriters familiar from 1D era but not since have some wondering if it was written a long time ago. We Made It, Habit, and Don't Let It Break Your Heart, on the other hand, all seem to have been written in Feb 2018. A Walls page was added to Wikipedia with a release date and an obviously made up track listing, I usually try to hedge my bets to avoid looking the fool (yes I know it doesn't actually work thank you) but friends, this is a fan edit. He already told us many of those songs were not on the album and if that last one is a Louis song title I'll admit defeat and pack it all in but I REALLY don't think so. A different and equally made up Walls track listing can be found on Genius.
Harry continues to do very low key Lights Up engagement- He follow! He like! He tweet congratulating someone who got a job! He... give love advice via DM? may have blocked someone for shit talking Louis? Huh. Anyway, the love advice: "Be honest and vulnerable, that's what makes you feel human. And feeling human, the good and the bad, is what life is." The relationship guru himself was seen out at a John Mayer concert in London last night. Official Charts posts about 'Lights Up by Happy Styles'[sic] with a picture of Harry looking a little too happy: that wet pic is already suggestive enough without adding a giant arrow pointing up from below the waist honestly. Unnecessary. Better reporting from Paper magazine who wrote an article about "the Queer Brand Harry Styles Wore in 'Lights Up'" and it's not even about Harris Reed, Harry is truly out there supporting all kinds of queer content creators.
Niall tells us we'll get a Spotify video for NTMY soon with preview clips over the next few days and posted a slew of pretty portrait shots, with the caption 'only getting started': photog Christian Tierney posted a couple of the pics to his personal with a caption referencing Irish politics/Brexit. In today's episode of 'Niall explains things' he labels a couple of the pics "hunk looking out over a radiant skyline" and "hunk leans against slatted wood fixture outside an LA radio station." He says the 36 in the NTMY video is not a clue about the album release date. BFF Lewis Capaldi chatted about the song they wrote together ("oh is he talking about that now? That's great, let's release it, I'd like to make some money") and says they recorded some kind of friend challenge thing together but that it was too much of a mess to use. Niall ribs him in a comment and he answers "not nice to meet ya." Meanwhile Niall continues to push us to promote his song, with multiple tweets a day urging fans to engage in activities to "get it moooovviinn up them charts!" and much boosting of fan promo activities. The "let's go team" is nice and all but sideyes are increasing as we go into day three of this barrage. Did he see Lewis pull off his America's Sweetheart campaign and think he'd do the same? If so I got two words for ya Niall: More. Costumes.
"Date night!" writes Liam on a post of Maya. She's lounging and checking her phone in a hoodie in what looks to be a mid range hotel, some date (okay fine that sounds like a great date but you know what I mean) but the pap pics from earlier in the evening are fancier. He tells us we'll be getting an acoustic version of Stack It Up tomorrow, hot on the heels of the live acoustic SIU video the other day, and the Dec 6 date for the album is being reported by multiple retail outlets who got the same order sheet we saw last week. Will the Christmas song be on it? Is this a Christmas release? And he has a podcast interview (Jessie Ware's Kitchen Manners) which won't be out until tomorrow but is already making quite a stir. According to the tabs he says that Cheryl and him broke up five months before they said they did and faked it for the public in the interim; Cheryl's people deny that the podcast says that (and claim that the Sun, specifically, made it up as an 'agenda driven story once again.') We'll find out tomorrow! He is also quoted as saying, "We were definitely overworked. I had no personal life, I learnt nothing about myself. I remember getting to therapy and the guy was like, 'what do you like to do?' I hadn’t got a clue. I just lived so long as this reclusive pop star who was afraid of people, who just stayed inside all the time. I needed to stop, definitely. It would have killed me."
Liam is rumored to be on BBC1 ‘The One Show’ this Friday and we're told HQ footage from Madrid (Liam and Louis' performances!) will be posted soon!
