OC Story: Rebirth
(Marcus & Liam’s rewritten backstory)
(TW: Mentions of Death and Self-Harm)
A young Mage & Avian rewake in a place fully covered in white, immediately embracing once they lay eyes on each other.
Both of them still vividly remember what happened to them seconds prior.
They were ambushed by what felt like a large horde of entities
They got once last bittersweet look at each other before slowly closing their eyes
They died.
By the looks of it, the place the two of them are now in seems to be the afterlife. But, the place seems a bit bleak compared to the myths and stories they’ve read about.
Before they could explore the place any further, they’re met with a jarring face.
A large person of an indeterminable gender, their face partially masked with a veil that ends around their neck with long hair being partially tied into a bun, and a long white robe with symbols of the spirit elements on their robe’s sash.
Both of them immedietly knew who their face to face with,
The Creator, the being that created their universe.
Before any of them could ask them any questions, the Creator begins to speak.
“I have watched you two from birth to death. You have such vivid and vibrant dreams and desires, but the time period you’ve lived within was sadly harsh to both your dreams, and your love.”
The Mage & Avian both look at each other with a sad look before turning their heads back towards the Creator, who continues their speech
“That is why I will be giving you two a second chance. There’s a portal behind me that’ll lead into the future, where your dreams can become a reality, and your love is respected and accepted into society. You will be reincarnated together, and the old memories of your past life will slowly but surely return to the both of you. I won’t guarantee that you’ll immediately find each other in your next life, but your souls will be semi connected in a similar vain to the soulmates that I’ve forged, and your souls will immediately recognize each other once you reunite.
I understand if you don’t want to accept this, but the portal will always stay open if you change your mind later.”
The two lovers immediately accept the offer, walking together to where the portal awaits them, stopping once they’re inches away from it.
Before they enter it together, the Avian speaks towards his lover, “We’ll find each other before we re-enroll back into Arcana Academy, right Liam?”
The Mage smiles back at him, reassuring him as he answers his question, “Yeah. It’s a promise Marcus.”
And so, they kiss
They hold hands
And they enter the portal together, reincarnating into the distant future.
———
Both of them were reborn on the same day,
And while they weren’t reborn into the same village, the promise that they made towards each other was one of the first things that they remembered.
The two of them were reborn more than have a century into the future. So there were loads of new things for the world to offer, so Marcus & Liam took the opportunity to discover the new world, alongside more about themselves.
Marcus was reborn into a family of Avians, Cardinal Hybrids to be more specific. He loved to fly, both in his past and current life, even considering the day he flew for the first time after reincarnation as one of his core memories. Entertainment was lacking in the past to his dismay, so he immediately took a liking into video games after his parents introduced them to him. Sure, it sounds like he might sound introverted considering his interests, but he was as upbeat and confident as he was in the past.
On the other hand, Liam was reborn as a Sky Mage, having a strong connection to elements like Lightning, Air, Water, and Ice. He immediately took a liking to the books and stories that were released during his childhood and pre-teens, and he still loved mythological tales about old Gods and heroes. In a contrast to Marcus, Liam preferred to keep to himself, and was somewhat timid, making it all the more surprising that he was a prodigy when it came to the elements. But then again, both of his mothers graduated from one of the best Academies.
Things weren’t all that easy though,
The relationship they had was accepted by society…
for the most part.
Some people still had a disdain for relationships like theirs. And both of them were bullied to hell and back growing up because of their respective species, and it got especially worse after their respective classmates came to the realization that neither of them were interested in girls.
All of it made them think that any harm that they received was deserved, even if it means the harm is coming from themselves.
———
The flower field was all too familiar to Liam as he walked through it.
He could feel the memory of that day slowly but surely come back to him, much to his dismay.
Of all the memories from his past life, the one involving the very field he was standing in was one he wanted to forget.
He hated how powerless he felt when he fought those entities.
He hated how it felt to receive injury after injury as the entities began to overcome his attacks
He hated how it felt to be at the brink of death.
And most importantly, he hated the sight of Marcus dying alongside him with a sincere smile on his face.
It’s been more than a decade since he was reborn with a second chance of life, and the hope of seeing Marcus again slowly dwindled away despite the promise they had of reuniting in their next life.
And everything that society threw his way certainly didn’t make it any better as he stared at the long gloves that covered his self-inflicted scars.
He decided to walk closer towards one of the flowers that perked his interest, even if they all looked similar.
As Liam picked up the flower, he felt bittersweet as he began to recognize the flower, and what it symbolized.
It was a green carnation, a symbol of love, especially between two men.
He stared at the flower as more and more memories of him & Marcus returned to him; the warmth of their first kiss, sparring practice with their twin spears, all those stolen moments, all of it felt ambivalent to him considering how their relationship “ended”.
As Liam analyzed the flower, he heard the loud flap of a bird’s wings. At first, he was shocked over how loud the wings flapped, but he quickly realized that it didn’t come from a bird…
But rather, an avian.
He could hear the avian’s footsteps grow more closer to him. And as they do, Liam could feel his once dwindling hope of reuniting with him instantly return.
And it all clicked into place the moment he heard the avian speak,
“…Liam?”
Liam immediately turned to see his lover for the first time in what felt like eternity.
He looked beautiful within his point of view, with avian wings now resembled a bright red cardinal, and a beanie that had a colour that resembled the wings’.
Liam could feel the smile on his face grow as he stood up and ran towards Marcus to embrace him with a loving kiss.
While Marcus was taken by surprise, he immediately reciprocated the kiss as he wrapped both his wings and his arms around Liam.
It felt euphoric for the both of them as they reunited in the same place that tore them apart.
They both pulled away from the kiss holding each other’s faces as both of them started to tear up out of pure romantic joy.
“Hey, Marcus.”
Marcus tearfully snickered as he pressed their foreheads together,
“I missed you… so much. You can’t imagine how happy I am to finally see you again.”
———
They stayed in that flower field for a while, catching each other up on what’s happened to them in the past couple of years spent apart,
“I knew you’d still be into mythology. You always loved talking about the different gods back then.”
Liam chuckled, “Well, video games felt like something that was up your alley when I first learned about them.” He paused for a moment before deciding to continue, “…so how did end up remembering our past life?”
Marcus was originally shocked over his question, before sincerely smiling as he recalled that memory, “I had vague dreams of you ever since I was five, but I never really knew what it met until I played my favourite RPG for the first time. Sometimes, if you interacted with furniture in the game, it would show a text-box with some text, and I came across a mirror in a home that prompted text that said, ‘Despite everything, it’s still you’. Those vague dreams I had of you started to make more sense after that. What about you?”
Liam smiled as he recalled that fateful memory, “One of my moms bought me a book filled with mythological stories, and one of them was about Eros & Psyche. Eros had wings on his back just like you, and he was the Greek God of Love, so my mind practically put two & two together by the time I finished reading his & Psyche’s story.”
He paused before continuing to speak, albeit nervously, “Speaking of… my parents actually figured out about my- …our reincarnation.” Liam turned towards Marcus as he continued talking, “I told them about the dreams I had about you when I was younger, and they’ve… slowly managed to figure it out. What about yours?”
Marcus smile instantly changed into a frown, “I… haven’t gotten the chance to yet. I do plan on telling them, but my dads have been busy with work-related stuff, and me bringing up… this just feels like I’d just be adding more pressure. Not that it’s the only thing I’d reveal that would do that.”
Liam noticed Marcus tightly clutch his wrists as he finished that sentence. He also wore long gloves, and while they do compliment his aviator-esque attire, Liam had a bad feeling on what else lied under them, as he held his hands with his own
“Marcus… did you also-?“
“Yeah, I did. I cut myself.”
Both of them could feel their hearts break over this revelation. Neither of them vocally specified that their respective scars were a result of constant amounts of bullying, yet they both knew fully well that it was a primary catalyst.
Marcus sighed, “I really feel ashamed about my scars. But at the same time, they’re reminders that I’m still here despite everything thrown my way.” A smile grew back onto his face as he gently held Liam’s with one of his hands, “And, I think it’s worth it, since it ultimately led me back to you, Liam.”
Liam instantly leaned into his touch as he held Marcus’ hand with his own, “Same here Marcus.” He chuckled, “Guess, you really are the same Avian I fell for.”
The smile on Marcus face grew wider as he moved his other hand to have a firmer grasp on Liam’s face, “And you’re the same Mage I thought looked pretty cute.”
Liam blushed, but before he could respond, Marcus brought him into another kiss.
Compared to their last one, this one felt more calming, rejuvenating even.
It won’t change the physical and mental scars they’ve gained over the years,
But knowing full well, that they truly have each other to turn to, will make whatever comes their way more easier.
