Belle of Bloomsbury (1948) painted by Cedric Morris The Belle of Bloomsbury was a white bull terrier called Swirl, owned by Morris’ sister Nancy. Although he used a reference photograph (perhaps the only example of this practise in his work), Morris made several changes to the painting, emphasising Swirl’s status as an important figure in her own right. Her erect posture, and the title of the painting, lend the dog a stately air. Sir Cedric Lockwood Morris, 9th Baronet (1889 – 1982) was a British artist, educator and horticulturalist. Born in Swansea, South Wales, Morris travelled to Canada and the USA before returning to the UK to study singing at the Royal College of Music, London. Deciding to pursue art over singing, he studied at Académie Delécluse in Montparnasse, Paris until the outbreak of WWI. With his partner Arthur Lett-Haines, he later worked iand lived in London, Paris, Cornwall and finally Suffolk, where he Lett-Haines founded the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing. The school had many notable students, including Maggi Hambling and Lucian Freud. As an artist he is best known for his portraits, flower paintings and landscapes. (Source: Tate Modern)

Sir Cedric Lockwood Morris, 9º Baronete (11 de dezembro de 1889 – 8 de fevereiro de 1982) foi um artista britânico , professor de arte e homem-planta . Ele nasceu em Swansea , no sul de Gales , mas trabalhou principalmente em East Anglia . Como artista, ele é mais conhecido por seus retratos , pinturas de flores e paisagens .

Vida pessoal

Arthur Lett nasceu em 2 de novembro de 1894, em 9 Walterton Road, Paddington , Londres, filho de Charles Lett e Frances Laura Esme Lett (que mais tarde se casou com S. Sidney Haines). Ele foi educado na St Paul's School, em Londres e então, planejando uma carreira na agricultura, trabalhou em uma fazenda em Poslingford Hall em Clare, Suffolk .

Na Primeira Guerra Mundial, ele serviu no Exército Britânico . Em 1916, Lett-Haines se casou (como sua segunda esposa; ele ficou viúvo ainda adolescente) com Gertrude Aimee Lincoln, nascida em Michigan, mas quando conheceu o pintor Cedric Morris em 1918, este último foi morar com eles e em 1919 sua esposa Aimee voltou sozinha para a América. Morris e Lett-Haines viveram juntos até sua morte, Haines subordinando amplamente sua própria carreira artística para promover o de sua parceiro. Esse relacionamento durou cerca de 60 anos, apesar de sua natureza aberta que incluía ligações de ambos os lados, Morris com o pintor John Aldridge e o artista Paul Odo Cross (1898-1963, que financiou a compra de Benton End) e Lett-Haines com Stella Hamilton e Kathleen Hale .

Em 1937, Morris e Haines fundaram a East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing em Dedham . A escola fechou quando Haines morreu em 1978, embora Morris tenha continuado a viver em Benton End até sua morte em 1982. Eles estão enterrados um perto do outro no Cemitério Hadleigh, em Hadleigh.

Uma exposição retrospectiva foi realizada na Redfern Gallery em 1984 e uma exposição conjunta Morris-Haines "Teaching Art and Life" no Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery em 2002-2003.

Sir Cedric Lockwood Morris, 9th Baronet was a British artist, art teacher and plantsman. He was born in Swansea in South Wales, but worked mainly in East Anglia. As an artist he is best known for his portraits, flower paintings and landscapes.
