3. What are some tropes or details that you think are very characteristic of your fics?

this is a hard question to answer, but i think it might be group dynamics?? helps that the majority of fandoms i've written in are sports anime, but i love having a good handful of characters just talking and annoying each other <3

41. Link a fic that made you think, “Wow, I want to write like that.”

somewhat more serious answer here so i'll do another one about something else.

A warlord with a dark secret. His defiant captive, who burns for his touch. A smoldering passion will ignite when they surrender to their…. for something very specific, which is going to seem silly considering the great writing of the fic itself, but i love the title/summary combo. like helenish' writing is some of my favourite but it's not at all a style i think i could pull off, nor do i want to because i don't think that's where my strengths lie. BUT THAT TITLE AND SUMMARY, and then reading the story and getting the full picture, and then coming back to the title and summary. it's so good!! i love the power of formatting and using the medium you have [points] i wanna do stuff like that!!

46. Do you prefer writing on your phone or on a computer (or something else)? Do you think where you write affects the way you write?

i usually write on my computer, sometimes with pen in a notebook. once, at an old job that i hated, and in hindsight was just not mentally stimulating enough, i would write in my head. not just like, general plotting or what have you, but wording. i'd repeat the words of a solid few paragraphs to myself. then i'd come home and type it up (and obviously edit and add some substance). i think i must have done this maybe in bits and pieces for a few things, but there's one fic that i know i did primarily like this and i think it shows haha. it's very sparse.

so that def affected the way i wrote, but other than chanting a fic in my head i don't know if where/how i write would affect the process in a significant way for me!

I love music industry AUs. Add terrific characterisation, OCs that fit well with the canon characters, good pacing and a highly IC and utterly necessary sex scene and I'll reread a frankly embarrassing number of times.

It's a K-pop idol AU, and it's beautifully constructed around beautifully IC Sangwoo and Jaeyoung, it has Yuna being very Yuna. It has bickering entirely in style with what Semantic Error did to make me fall in love with it.

I first read it in February 2023, and I reread it about every other week, I find it that entertaining. If you're at all into Semantic Error, I very very very much recommend that you read this one for a different flavour of two lovely characters.

Fic I bookmarked recently: Distraction Management by @sinsensory Semantic Error, Sangwoo/Jaeyoung Idol AU.

Their characters mesh so well with the trainee/new debut group feel. Helps that I'm in a SKZ rpf spiral and enjoying the- surprising lack of- "canon compliant" fics dealing with Idol Issues. But also. Very lovely, very in character. Wanted to kick my screen when I hit the end because I wanted more. How dare.

Fic I love a Normal Amount: Hawks and Hands by @dsudis due South, Fraser/Ray K, hockey AU.

Not kidding when I say this fic changed my life. It's a great story through and through because everything Dira writes is gold from the plot to the prose, but this is the story that made me look into hockey, which gave me my love of the Pittsburgh Penguins, which gave me the drive to join a roller derby team to Make Sid Proud, which saved me from offing myself during some dark times.

Fic I wish I could read again for the first time: Cheating because it's a series, but The Windhovers - sarcasticchick

Torchwood, Jack/Ianto.... so many things happening I don't want to say because the surprises are the story. (I'm not into Phil/Clint so I have not read the third part. Don't think it's necessary to love every moment previous). I stayed up for over 24 hours to read the whole thing and woke my ex up gasping while reading in bed. I am not a visceral reader. I enjoy but I don't usually physically react. This made me react out loud.

Currently watching: Schitt’s Creek as my vision problems caused me to miss the last 2 seasons when it was airing but I now am watching the whole thing. And Star Trek: Discovery with my mom as I introduce her to new Trek. I am on season 3 of both right now.

Currently reading: I'm currently reading 2 series. At the 20th book in the Phryne Fisher series by Kerry Greenwood. These are the books the TV show was based on. And then I just started the Fandom Hearts romance series by Cathy Yardley.

Current obsession: the cozy farming sim Wylde Flowers, I am obsessed indeed. Love this game and it’s witchy fun times. It’s extremely LGBTQIA+ friendly and it’s fully voice acted. Just a brilliant fun game. Highly recommend. It’s on steam, switch, and Apple Arcade.

How was shaving your head? I only ask because shaving my head revealed long-dormant cowlicks to me, and I had to rapidly devise new techniques for dealing with them.

It was good, except that I was unprepared and my head got immediately SO sunburnt. I loved the lack of upkeep - whenever there were weird bits growing in, I just shaved it down again!

My hair had been waist-length two weeks before I shaved my head and I was in the midst of some serious grief, so it felt both like an acknowledgement of pain and a new start. Very positive experience overall.

2. the dumbest possible description of the scene I'm stuck on

(paraphrasing because I'm doing this on my phone, despite my computer being visible from here. I don't always make good choices!)

to pick a few of my WIPs... my longer batman one is two people talking past each other, my shorter batman story is a boy gardening and contemplating the definition of child abuse without ANY introspection whatsoever thank you, and my s & d tier one, I guess it should be a wedding next! tfw you get married to your omnipotent evil best friend who's unsubtly in love with you and you need to decide if your vows are real or just for tax purposes, we've all been there!

12. Will you change anything about the way you edit or rewrite this year?

i'm probably going to do less self-editing and more just zooming through to a first draft. i am a chronic "read bunches of my own fic 50 times and edit them like crazy so my beta barely has anything to do" and that's just kind of an exhausting way to do it.

it also means that by the end of the full draft i want nothing to do with it anymore and put less into the back-and-forth "you really need to rethink this" that happens with my beta, so i'd like less of that, i think.

my first instinct was to say "the amount of work it's going to take," but I really want to move away from laziness defining my writing practice, so I'm going to take a deep breath and answer differently:

what's pissing me off in this particular WIP is that it's been percolating for so long that it's expanded and grown too many branches. it WILL need to be pruned, and I am very bad at killing my darlings. my betas will have to fight tooth and nail to get me to let go of certain elements. it will make the story better, but I'm always loathe to do it!

Why: Short, but so sweet! I love these kind of fics, because I think Kira is always excited to have new friends, and I think Derek could use a few more friends in his life, too. And I love how Derek is wary of Kira at first, concerned about ulterior motives, but he gives her a chance and it ends up being a good thing for both of them.

Why: This fic is so lovely and sweet and sensual, the way Stiles helps Scott wash in the bath, then helps him relax in a different way. It’s the way I would expect them to sort of fall together, realizing how well they fit, somewhere in the future.

Why: It’s a lovely future fic, with Jackson at first being very bitter at Derek sending him away to London, but eventually coming around to the fact that Derek was genuinely regretful about it. I also love that you can see how both of them have grown as people, and are now in a much better place to figure out what’s between them.

Why: This fic was a delight from start to finish! It was lovely to watch Stiles and Danny’s fake relationship (and fake marriage) gradually turn into a real one. They suit each other so well, manage to fit into each other’s lives seamlessly, and this story really portrays that wonderfully.

Most Popular by Kudos: “awake, o sleeper” (207k), a ranwan modern cultivation au, in which mo ran comes back to sisheng peak after five years of absence, and soon later, chu wanning begins to be plagued by strange dreams.

Most Hits: same as above, by virtue of posting that monster of a story in chapters.

Longest: again, it was “awake, o sleeper” at 207k, which is also the longest story i've ever completed! i'm super proud of this!

Shortest: “the song of good hope” at 3.2k - a suitang futurefic i wrote for a small friend zine!

Fic that made me cry: i'm sure there have been others, but i read “grief. grief. handing you back your coin” by @it-goes-on last week and it made me ugly-cry, so thank you.

Fic that made me smile: “distraction management” by @sinsensory (26k, semantic error, jaeyoung/sangwoo) made me laugh out loud several times.

Events participated in: so many events! i participated in four bigger exchanges: mxtx exchange, danmei fanworks exchange, mxtx remix and yuletide; did two small server exchanges (one of which has yet to reveal); participated in the wangxian wlw week; took part in a small friend zine; and wrote two raffle fics!

Most Underrated Fic: i don't think any of my fics are underappreciated/underrated, honestly, because i'm really fortunate to receive a lot of incredible feedback, but in general, any and all small fandom fics are always a safe bet if you want to absolutely make someone's day with kudos or a comment!

Coming in 2023: ooooh boy, here we go... i have nine fics on my current to-write list: 1) the sequel to my yuletide king: eternal monarch fic, which i've already started working on; 2) a [redacted] fic for a small discord friend exchange i'm participating in, also in progress; 3) 5+1 king: eternal monarch fic about all the times jo yeong hooked up with other people (and the one he got to keep); 4) ranwan “sell your haunted house” au, in which chu wanning is a cultivator exorcist and mo ran is a medium haunted by the ghost of his dead mother; 5) fengqing charity auction fic for @lquacker, in which feng xin and mu qing continue to hook up every one hundred years or so for 800 years before they finally talk about feelings post-canon; 6) school 2013 namsoon/heungsoo roadtrip fic, because i really want to try writing heungsoo's pov and i love roadtrip fic; 7) my country: the new age 5+1 fic about seonho and hwi fucking across many years and two dynasties, feat. a lot of angry sex in the divorced era; 8) my country: the new age post-canon fic, because i know myself and i know i'll want to write one; 9) my country: the new age space opera au.
