Days in Queenstown vol 2
So yesterday I had a tough morning, woke up and felt a lot of pressure due to being in Queenstown and there are so many possibilities and I have to enjoy myself and make the most of it since I am paying a lot for the campsite I am staying at. I already knew the night before that I won’t get up early so I thought of riding some of the local trails (instead of going to the Coronet Peak bike park which is 20 minute away and I thought I’d need to book the shuttle bus a day earlier) but the options were just somehow not that interesting, I could either go back to the spot where the coaching was but that would have been the 3rd time in a row or I had the option to pedal up to Queenstown hill which has some great semi illegal trails but according to the coach the uphill is brutal and without locals to guide me I can have a good or a not so good ride since I don’t know the trails. That didn’t sound too good either, I didn’t want to waste a lot of energy for a questionable ride. Long story short I had some reasons to not do either of the options but I knew I kinda want to do something…In the end I decided to do everything else I want to/need to do first and hopefully by the time I’m done with those it’ll be clearer. So I had breakfast, went shopping, did some wrist training and set down to do some research which eventually solved the problem.
A bit about Coronet Peak. The mountain, or rather the trails, are split into two parts. The upper, bike park part, accessible by chairlift and from the lower station of the chairlift to the very bottom of the mountain, which is accessible by pedalling or shuttle bus that picks you up from at a few designated spots by the main road. The upper part is mostly downhill oriented, so big bikes (bigger than mine), fast, ridden out (cause it’s easy access) and of course the chairlift is quite expensive (79 NZD for unlimited rides between 10 am till 4 pm). The shuttle bus is 12 NZD per single ride and runs pretty much every hour (from 10 am till 4 pm).
The lower trails were supposed to be more suited for my riding style so I was aiming for those and after a bit of research I found out that I could still book a shuttle ride for 2 pm. That got me kinda excited finally and soon I was ready to go. It was a 12 min drive from the campsite to the shuttle pick up point so I had plenty of time, although I was not sure where the exact point was (and it turned out to be not where I parked of course) so I got there a bit earlier. 3 min before the pick up time I realized that I am at the wrong spot so I had a short sprint on the road, fortunately the actual pick up point wasn’t too far away and I made it in time. The shuttle ride was 10-12 min to the bottom station of the gondola and from there, after a cheeky bit of uphill I hit one of the most iconic flowy singletrails of Coronet Peak, called Rude Rock. It. Was. Amazing! The trail is 3.2 km long which is supposed to be long but it felt way too short. From there on I rolled further down to the northwest into Skipper Canyon on an old mining trail that was turned into a bike trail. Also, the canyon is famous for the beautiful views (duuuh), Lord of the Rings being shot here (at this point you shouldn’t even be surprised about such facts) and jet boating (boats going fast on narrow rivers/streams in canyons). I knew I’d have to pedal back from the bottom of the trail but I didn’t expect it to be so exhausting. It was a 5km long climb which is fine on its own but it was a gravel road, super dusty, surprisingly steep and the sun was shining relentlessly…Took me around 50 min to pedal back up and by the time I was at the bottom of the Rude rock trail (where I decided to go northwest instead of southeast - which is the way back to the car) I was totally cooked and could feel that the peanut butter and jam sandwich I had for lunch was absolutely gone and I had no juice left. I rode down on the southeastern side of the mountain (ammmmazing trails, rode one called Morning Glory that flows into another one called Hot Rod, probably enjoyed them even more than Rude Rock, great big berms, smaller and medium sized jumps that were just pure perfection to practice my newly learned jumping technique. Although I probably went a bit too fast to actually consciously focus on the technique, trail just called for more speeeeed).
Took a quick shower in the evening and based on the suggestion I received the day before I turned my previously downrated food into amazing burritos. Yumm!
After dinner I walked over to the dirt jump park that was only 6 min on foot and instead of watching some series I watched crazy people do crazy things on bikes. Mind was blown. There were way more people than a few days ago when I was there during the party, it was a real jam, music was playing and shit was going down until some poor guy crashed and then the party stopped for a while till the emergency got there and cleaned him up from the landing..And yes, for those interested there were some famous peoplez as well. Kaos Seagrave, Erik Fedko. And maybe some other people who I don’t know but still did some wild tricks.
Today I already knew that I have to go back to Coronet Peak and I have to ride those trails again, preferably as long as my body is capable of functioning. So that’s what I did. I rode some of the trails from yesterday plus I tried a more natural singletrail that was had a way higher difficulty than the rest. It was called Slip Saddle. I can confirm, it was slippery, not because of the mud but because of the dust. And of course it was steep as hell. I wish I rode it with someone else would have felt a bit more comfortable probably but still, I am glad I tried it, made it down only with a small slip up (pun…semi intended) but nothing major. Sure I landed on my left hand but I guess the wrist brace did its job again cause I still don’t have any pain in my wrist and it’s been a few hours. Anyway, had a great time today as well, in the end I did four laps. For all of you numbers people, one lap is about 25-30 min, roughly 9 km and 800 meters of elevation. The Slip Saddle trail needed some extra uphill pedalling so that was probably a bit more plus in the end I tried a different trail and for that I also had to pedal a bit.
Long story short great day. Wanted to go for a 5th round but I thought I could either do a half dead last lap which would be risky (especially cause the wind picked up in the meantime and it wasn’t fun to jump anymore) or I can just go back for a single lap tomorrow on my way to…
So, we got to the thing why I actually started typing this. I was hoping that by the end of this post I could figure out where I’m going tomorrow. Did not work. The issue is that from tuesday the weather is supposed to be shit (meaning: rain rain rain) and I wanted to head over to the west coast to do some hikes and check out some glaciers. Well you can’t do any of that when it’s raining. Originally I wanted to stop in Wanaka for a night on my way to the west coast to either ride there again or hike (the road road pretty much goes through Wanaka. Maybe useful additional info that there are only 3-4 passes through which you can reach the West Coast from the east, the most southern is the one I want to take) but that would mean that tomorrow I drive to Wanaka, have a lovely monday and by the time I get to the West Coast the weather turns bad for a few days and I can spend some time in my car. By some time I mean 2-3 days. Not too excited about that. So now I am trying to figure out where should to find a cozy hostel where I can wait for the weather to get better. By next friday it should be sunny again in most places but from tuesday till friday is a long time to not do anything…Not sure. I also thought of just staying in Queenstown till tuesday cause there is still so much riding to be done here (and other things too but I am really getting hooked on riding again and the wrist has been taking it really well). For that I’d need another spot to stay at and that seems pretty difficult as well. Already texted Andrea if I could sleep on the driveway at the pet sitting place where she’s staying till tuesday…Let’s see. That still wouldn’t solve the rainy days situation but at least I’d have a few more days to think about it.
Oh well. Some more uncertainty practice haha.
Pictures are just some impressions this time, it doesn’t make much sense to write something about all of them. The video speaks for itself.
Obligatory song recommendation:
Oasis - Morning Glory
That was to be expected. One of the best trails at Coronet Peak is called Morning Glory. If you don’t know what Morning Glory means maybe you should google it. Maybe not.

The best bike tires of the world
11. September
Twin Oaks - Telford

gravel e-bikes
Tumblr media
Was sind Gravel E-Bikes?

On my bag-test trip in Germany, I had problems with the bottom bending to touch the front wheel. I sewed a 3mm PET plate inside the bottom of the bag, and a 1.5 mm outside where the tire had made a hole. Now the bottom of the bag is flat. I have tested it In single trail conditions to reach the station. Days in Queenstown vol 1
I’m staying in Queenstown for a few days and since a lot has happened already I feel like this is just gonna be short glimpses about the most important/funny/weird things.
So yesterday after having a really slow morning I got ready and headed into town to do some riding around the Skyline Bike Park, but this time I wanted to pedal up instead of using the gondola. Partly to save money but also to get fit again cause I really miss the feeling of how fit I felt last summer. As It turned out there is still room for improvement, the first few turns on the access gravel road, that goes to the top of the gondola, already killed me, real steep, really dusty and in the sun. Fortunately after a while it got just a bit mellower, still hard but at least it was in the shades. Made it to the gondola and started chatting with an older Aussie guy and his local friend and eventually I joined them and we pedalled together further up to do a loop on a singletrail that’s a bit further away from all the bikeparky stuff. They were in their late 50s but were super chill and we got along really well, got some good riding spot tips and in general I just really enjoyed pedalling with other people. At the bottom of the loop we said goodbye, I went back to the car, had some lunch (probably too much, got some serious stomachache during the next uphill) and headed back up for a shorter lap on a more flowy, blue jumptrail called McNearly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So a bit of back story, Andrea was doing this pet sitting near Queenstown, but she also got another pet sitting in Arrowtown (20 min east of Queenstown) that had one day of overlap so last night she could decide where to stay and while she stayed at the “old” place, she let me sleep at the new place, so once again I found myself in someone elses house, in this case with a really old and a bit cranky and needy dog.
Last night, we went for a late birthday dinner (that was generously gifted to me by my sister!) in town. Found a really cool italian place with homemade pasta and everything, had a proper fancy (really tasty!) dinner. The picture on the right was the back of the Menu. I loved some of these statements or answers or whatever they are, especiall the Office reference! Oh and saw a busker playing the piano by the lake..That was special. Like it really touched me on a really deep level. The music was amplyfing my sense of gratutide I guess and it was also like a musical interpretation of the lake and the surrounding mountains.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This morning I went for a short hike with Andrea and the not so old dog (called Wally, see picture) which was pretty and we could see the area from a different perspective (if you’re on the top of most of the hills around Queenstown the view is almost always pretty similar. Pretty, but similar).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During the hike we somehow ended up talking about flexibility and I made some interesting realizations. In the past weeks I felt like I am not really able to slow down properly and I just keep doing stuff, go on rides, hikes, go from A to B, but I never really reflect on it besides writing the blog and also like I am not really trying to figure out some of the internal things that I thought of focusing on while being here, long story short I felt like I am stagnating in my personal development and just kinda cruising. Which now that I think about it should be allowed and fine but I just didn’t feel good about it. Anyway, somehow flexibility came up as a topic and through the conversation I was able to reflect on it and realize that I actually got so much better at it since I am here, like with all the uncertainty of “where am I gonna sleep tomorrow” and all that, I can absolutely see how much lighter I am holding the whole topic and that I have this strong sense that I am going to be able to figure it out and I am not so fixated on certain plans or ideas like I was even a month or two months ago. Well what is that if not progress?! I was super happy once I put this together and could see the step(s) I made. Of course I can’t know for sure but my gutt tells me that this is not just a fleating experience and I will be able to take this “new skill” and integrate it into my life once I settle again somewhere.
When we got back to the house with the old dog, 2 minutes after we got back I managed to step into something that at first felt like squishy food but turned out to be dog poop. In the house. In the living room. I was only wearing socks. This did not spark joy. Had to wash my feet and get rid of the socks for good..It is an old dog yeah, half blind and everything but still. There is a dog door so I really don’t know how the dog managed to sneak some poop into the house..2 minutes later we found out that she (or the cat, we are not 100% sure) ate half a box of my chocolate chip cookies. The cookies were in a plastic box, and the plastic box was in a cardboard box on the couch…Sneaky fella gave us a heart attack cause yeah, dogs aren’t supposed to eat chocolate but Andrea contacted the owner and she said it’s alright, the dog will live. Pfuah. That kinda turned off my interest that I developed in the past days to try pet sitting haha. Oh yeah this is the cat who apparently likes to drink from the tap so when she(?) sits in the sink that mostly means that she is thirsty.
Tumblr media
After all the dog drama (and the grieving of my beloved cookies) I packed up my things (I am staying at a campsite in Queenstown for 3 nights) and drove to Queenstown for the bike coaching. I really enjoyed it, didn’t necessarily learn too many new things, I wanted to focus on jumping technique and I’ve done a jump course in the past (and watched a bunch of tutorial videos) but this time I got the full attention of the coach (who was really nice btw, british dude who moved here 18 years ago) and he just phrased the whole thing in a different way that slowly started to klick. Now I just gotta practice practice practice to overwrite the years of bad technique. Got some great riding tips as well, I may check out some of that stuff tomorrow if my wrist still feels fine. Talking about wrist, it felt quite okay today even though this was my second day of riding in a row, stoked about that!
This is just me using the roof of the car as a drying rack after the ride today.
Tumblr media
Another cool bit, I have been thinking about getting some grease for my bike cause my front axle is bone dry and it should not be like that but I didn’t want to buy a whole tube of grease cause I won’t use the rest of it and I haven’t had the courage to walk into a shop and ask them to just grease it for me…Guess what, while cooking dinner today, I found out that the guy next to me is a mechanic and I asked him if he has some grease with him, sure he does, he actually gave me what he got cause he is flying home soon…What are the chances?! Should talk about my “needs” more haha.
Fun fact I made the worst dinner of my life today, not necessarily tastewise (although it doesn’t taste like much), but the texture man, the texture…Wanted to roast some cooked potatoes, broccoli, zucchini, spring onions and some Tofu, put some spices on it and that’s it but the potato got too soft while cooking and once I mixed it with the other things it just turned into one big mash of something that rather looks like disgusting leftovers than actual food…After complaining about it to someone in the kitchen got some tips to fill it into wraps which is a great idea actually, will get some wraps tomorrow!
That’s it for today.
Obligatory song suggestion:
Twenty One Pilots - Shy Away
As far as I know this song is about Tyler (lead singer of the band) talking to his brother and encouraging him to go after his dream. Well even if it isn’t it is a great track and I listened the hell out of it when it came out, plus today while hiking we talked about what we tell people when they express how jealous they are that we get to travel like this. Long story short if you are someone thinking about doing something similar this is a sign that you should just fuckin’ GO FOR IT. If you got a thousand questions and you don’t even know where to start just know that it’s normal, but you don’t have to know the answer to all of them right from the start. One challenge at a time. And regarding the financial part, yes I am aware that I am in a privileged situtation but I don’t think that this is the only way to do it. You can go more budget, get a job, plan the costs a bit more etc. Last but not least ask yourself if it is really that important to own a car or a flat or a house or 15 guitars or God knows what. If it is that’s totally fine each their own but if you are maybe willing to give up on those things then the whole travelling thing could suddenly become more realistic. Okay I’ll stop, this wasn’t meant to be a whole motivational speech…
