I don't normally weigh in on news/fake news/"debunking", but this is such utter bullshit I can't NOT.
Here is the original article from MIT Review. It has nothing to do with phase shift damaging the grid (which is insane; more on that later). I found the article by searching for "MIT Press solar panels issues power grid" which took me to the MIT Climate Portal which had a "read more" at the end, leading to the original article on MIT Review. The article doesn't even contain the phrase "phase shift"; it's all about the economics of solar power in California. The article (and linked studies) talk about California's SB100 and the difficulties of using renewable non-firm (unstable; weather-reliant) energy sources like solar and wind. Nothing about damaging the power grid. (Though aging power grids are a definite issue that needs to be addressed with widespread policy change.)
Okay, so what about the phase shift thing. Short answer: total bullshit. Now, I could tell you that I'm an engineer (which I am) and then admit that I'm an electronics engineer and not an electrical engineer (which means I specialized in small scale electronics specifically integrated circuit design and implementation, not power grids). However, I still know how electricity works.
The power grid (side note: the US has 5) does have to regulate the frequency and phase in the power that is transmitted across the geographic service areas. It does this by having monitors and ways to adjust the phase and frequency of the transmission power. There are thousands of power generation stations all connected to each grid. They aren't all magically synchronized by some single device-- they all have to constantly monitor and adjust the power they are generating. It used to be manual, now it is automated. One of the easiest ways to make this change is using DC connectors and inverters. Why is this important to note? Because solarvoltaic arrays (solar panels) generate DC which then has to be inverted to AC (what comes out of the outlet in your house). If solar panels are connected directly to the grid WITHOUT a disconnect and WITHOUT battery storage, then the power will be sent into the grid. On residential or even small businesses, the effect is so minute it is considered negligible. On commercial plants, they do have battery storage banks, disconnects and frequency/phase monitoring and correction.
tl;dr: Just because someone is "debunking" a headline, doesn't automatically make them correct. Solar panels will not break the power grid because they cause phase shifts. There are financial and policy concerns about implementing renewable energy including addressing aging power grids, but this "correction" above seems more intended to make individuals afraid of installing solar panels than providing correct information.
