Lyrics for an old classic, pt.2
Tumblr media
I couldn't find anything about the background of this song! Such a lovely tune, brought to life the magic of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans singing it together in Roll on Texas Moon (Released September 12, 1946). 10/10 would recommend looking up that scene on Youtube!

Dinovember number 23, Parasaurolophus. It's commonly known that Parasaurolophus was musically inclined. Even dating to the mid 1900's, this creature was found in troupes of singing cowboys. Best known was the multitalented Honk Honk who could play ukulele, hit lovely high notes and line dance. You may still find his solo album "Honk Honk Honks the Honky-tonk". #dinovember2018 #drawingdinosaurs #parasaurolophus #cowboy #singingcowboy #honk #ukulele #falsetruths #justforfun #paleoart #artistoninstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/BqhyZGHB3ri/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1vtqlk1vahdlz

Whistling While I Work
Tumblr media
Not gifted with musical virtuosity, I count on Windows Media Player to provide the tunes while I drudge away in the old home studio.  Considering the TONS OF BUCKS I’ve spent on iTunes and Amazon Digital Music over the years, the old media player gets quite the sweaty workout daily.  Here’s the playlist for the next couple of hours:
Jake Head Boogie -- Lightnin’ Hopkins
Quaker Puffs (1940s Radio Commercial)
Just Another Hole In The Wall -- Lee “Shot” Hopkins
My Funny Valentine -- Stan Getz
Chicken Shack Boogie -- Amos Milburn
One Mint Julep -- Ray Charles
I’ll Take You There -- Staple Singers
Funky Broadway -- Wilson Pickett
Down Where The Sun Goes Down -- Coon Sanders’s Original Nighthawk Orchestra
Prisencolinensinanciusol -- Adriano Celantano
If I Can’t Turn To You -- Groove Kings
If I Should Fall From Grace With God -- The Pogues
Ridin’ Down The Canyon -- Gene Autry
Jimbo Jambo Land -- Shorty Godwin
Walking To Jerusalem -- Mahalia Jackson
Whoop and Holler -- Janiva Magness
Shake It For Me -- Howlin’ Wolf
Idolize You -- Ike & Tina Turner
Ain’t No Sunshine -- Bill Withers
I’m In Love Again -- Fats Domino
Boom Boom -- John Lee Hooker
Secrets -- Steve Pierson
Rehab -- Amy Winehouse
Somebody’s Been Usin’ That Thing -- Al Miller
I Ain’t Drunk -- Lonnie The Cat
Hay Unos Ojos -- Linda Ronstadt
Pin In Your Cushion -- Bo Carter
Let The Good Times Roll -- B.B. King and Bobby “Blue” Bland
Very Good Condition -- Eddy “The Chief” Clearwater
Pig Meat On The Line -- Memphis Minnie
Hot Cross Buns -- Paul Gayton
Fixing The Buick -- Martini Max and the Swing Kats
Don’t Let Your Deal Go Down -- Cowboy Copas
Heaven In A Pontiac -- Bill Perry
John Law Burned Down The Liquor Sto’ -- Chris Thomas King
The Lifeboat Party --  Kid Creole & The Coconuts
That should keep me in the salt mines for the next couple of hours.

I was in a hurry today trying to get all my work completed on a tight schedule and stopped to get a snack in the local gas mart... This man reminded me the importance of living fully in each moment... life is short. The joy and presence of this man has blessed many all over the world including service-members overseas. #singingcowboy🎼🎶🏇 #thesingingcowboy #retiredrodeo #bullrider #broncbuster #joecarta #italiancowboy #spaghettiwestern (at Lisbon, Maryland) https://www.instagram.com/p/B46QjyEApW7iSGJLtaGupFts5okzULSqCzHuUI0/?igshid=uyr8oldc19pu

Lyrics for an old classic
"I'm an Old Cowhand (From the Rio Grande)" sung by Roy Rogers in King of the Cowboys (1943).
Roy Rogers always had to sing at least one ballad in his movies. I've found some of them to be quite the forgotten gem. I picked this one to write down first, and found out it actually has a detailed and astute pedigree.
"I'm an Old Cowhand (From the Rio Grande)" is a comic song written by Johnny Mercer, and it was first sung by Bing Crosby in his Western musical film Rhythm on the Range, 1936. Backstory for the song itself: "Mercer and his wife were driving across the US en route to his hometown, Savannah, Georgia, after having apparently failed to succeed in Hollywood. Mercer was amused by the sight of cowboys, with spurs and ten-gallon hats, driving cars and trucks instead of riding horses. Singing cowboys were popular in films and on the radio then, and within 15 minutes, writing on the back of an envelope, Mercer transferred the image he was seeing into a song whose satirical lyrics vented some of his own bitter frustration with Hollywood." {Source: Furia, Philip (2003). Skylark: The Life and Times of Johnny Mercer. New York: St. Martin's Press. p. 85]
There may be a couple other verses, but these are the ones Roy Rogers sings while playing the guitar, with quite a few nice smiles thrown in.

#Repost from @thedayafter2016 with @regram.app ... Not so long ago: Murray’s Dude Ranch, a guest ranch in Apple Valley, California, was unique in that it was owned by and catered primarily to Blacks, and because it served as the set for a number of “all-black cast” western films. The 40-acre ranch on the edge of the Mojave Desert was purchased by Nolie B. and Lela Murray in 1922 for $100. Nolie, a Black businessman from Los Angeles, and his wife, Lela, decided to convert the former working cattle ranch in the northern part of Los Angeles County into the nation’s FIRST Black-owned dude ranch. Their ranch became a favorite vacation spot for Blacks since widespread segregation practices limited Black Californians’ access to private and public recreational facilities. For nearly 20 years, Murray’s Dude Ranch operated with a swimming pool, tennis courts, riding stables, and several small houses. Celebrities representing the sports and entertainment community visited the ranch, including world heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis. Louis’s 1937 visit motivated a photography crew from Life magazine to cover his stay. Six photographs of Louis appeared in the magazine’s Nov. 15, 1937 issue. By the late 1930s a number of films were shot on location at Murray’s Dude Ranch including 4 of Herbert Jeffries’ “all-Black cast” westerns. Jeffries, known as the singing cowboy, was the star of “Harlem on the Prairie” and “The Bronze Buckaroo”. Other celebrity guests included Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, Hattie McDaniel, Nina Mae McKinney, and Lena Horne. Lela Murray died in 1949 at the age of 58. In 1955, widower Nolie married Callie Armstrong, a Los Angeles schoolteacher. The couple sold most of the ranch to singer and actress Pearl Bailey for $65,000. The Murrays kept 5 acres and built and managed a motel until Nolie’s death in 1958 at the age of 70. #murraysduderanch #losangeles #noliemurray #lelamurray #joelouis #lifemagazine #herbertjeffries #blackcowboys #cowboy #westerns #westernmovies #singingcowboy #Notsolongago #nsla
