Was disappointed to see no food photos in Yuki's Singapore dump, so I'm taking things into my own hands. Have a short and messy drabble instead
'Are you free tonight?' went a random text that Liam suddenly got on his phone one afternoon, wondering what's that all about.
'Yeah Yuki, what's up?'
'I wanna go street food hunting.'
Street food hunting? Liam thought to himself, sounding a bit like a dinner date.
'You sure John is fine with it?'
'John's said it's fine, it'll help me bulk up.'
Liam was relieved hearing that answer from Yuki, following up his previous text with another one.
'I heard there's great street food place called Lau Pa Sat. It's got various hawker stalls that sells many types of Singaporean seafood. You wanna come?'
Liam took a minute to give it think about. It's good that he and Yuki can have a bit of time to themselves, it wouldn't hurt to go find Singaporean street food once.
'Yeah, sure thing Yukes, I'm in.'
'Can't wait to see you tonight 😁'
'You see me every week already!'
Liam giggled to himself after sending the message, shaking his head as he plugs his phone in to charge and get ready.
~~~
Liam exits the elevator and walks into the lobby, where Yuki was already waiting.
'Hey Yuki!'
'You're a little late.' Yuki crossed his arms and tapped his foot, staring daggers into Liam's eyes.
'Yeah, I know, sorry, mate.'
'It's fine. Come, let's go.'
So the duo walked out of the hotel and headed across the street, entering the mall and
'How far is it?'
'It's only a 12-minute trip with public transport from here if Google Maps is accurate. Got your MRT card?'
'I got mine, but won't we be recognised in public?'
'Eh, to hell with it. Come, let's go before it gets too crowded.'
Yuki and Liam enter the mall in Marina Bay Sands, heading down the escalators and into the Bayfront MRT Station, passing through the gate, and approaching the platform.
~~~
Yuki and Liam walked out of the MRT station and towards the street, looking at the street signs, trying to find their way.
'You sure we're going the right way, Yukes?'
'Yes we are, we're following Google Maps.'
They kept on walking, following the GPS on Yuki's phone, until they encountered a large open space with a clock tower standing proudly in the middle of it.
'So this is the place... Interesting...' Liam nodded as he looked around in the interior.'
"Yeah, it says here on the website that it used to be an old fish market back in 1824.'
'Well, nothing fishy about it, I'd say.' Liam laughed at his joke, making Yuki smile as well.
'What do you wanna get, Liam?'
'Hmm, I dunno. Maybe something we could share?'
Yuki looked around the premises and saw a satay stall in the corner, immediately making up his mind
'Liam, I'm gonna go get us satay. Go find us a seat.'
Liam nodded his head and looked around, finding a vacant table nearby. He looked around and took notice of the hustle and bustle of the food court, seeing locals and tourists enjoying the various foods sold.
'Ok, I've ordered us satay and this oyster omelette called o-chien.'
'Oh thanks, Yuki. I'm gonna get us drinks. What do you want?'
'Coconut water would be nice.'
'Alright, I'll get us both coconut water. Stay right there.'
While Liam goes up to the drinks stall, Yuki looks at his surroundings, seeing the different people enjoying their food, making him dream about his future restaurant one day. Just as he gets deep into his daydream, the little pagers vibrated and beeped, telling him that their food was ready. He got up from his table and went to pick the food from their respected vendors.
Luckily for him, Liam went back to their table on time with their coconut water in tow. Yuki picked up the trays of food on each hand and brought it back to their table.
'Oh, that looks yum!' piped Liam sering Yuki with the trays, helping him placed them on the table.
'Thanks, Liam.' Yuki sat down and took a sip of the coconut water, feeling refreshed. 'Ah, nice and cold.'
'Right, let's dig in!' Liam piped up as he picked up a skewer and dipped it into the peanut sauce.
Yuki followed suit, took a bite of the satay, and enjoyed its smoky taste.
'Man, this hits the spot.'
'Liam, try the o-chien. I bet you'll like it.'
Liam picked up the chopsticks and tore a piece of the omelette from it. He dipped it in the chili sauce and took a bite.
'Hmm, it's very savoury and the chili sauce enhances the flavour.'
'Wow, using culinary words now, are we?'
'Picked that all up from you, mate.'
Liam stared at Yuki, who was happily enjoying the glutinous rice cakes immersed in the peanut sauce. He's still the huge foodie he first had feelings for many years ago in their flat, trapped at home due to the pandemic. Yuki's wide smile while being around food never fails to make Liam smile.
Suddenly, he had a cheeky idea.
'Yuki, Yuki, open your mouth.'
'Why?'
'Just trust me.'
'Well, alright then...'
Liam picked up a piece of the omelette, dipping it in chilli sauce, and fed it to Yuki.
'You're feeding me like I'm your girlfriend!'
'You could be mine, if you'd like.'
They both laughed it off together as they enjoyed their food, just the two of them. Yuki took a look at his phone, seeing that the clock is ticking and the night is further approaching.
'We better get back before it's late. Come, let's go.'
Liam and Yuki immediately finished their food and drinks, tidying up their trays, and placing them in their respected clean up spots.
They walked out of the food court and crossing the street, going down the road back to the MRT station.
~~~
'That was fun...' Liam commented as they walked through the hotel hallway, approaching their rooms.
'Yeah, it was. Thanks for being willing to join me.'
'It's no problem at all, Yukes.'
They both stood awkwardly in front of their rooms' doors, darting their eyes around before Liam broke the silence.
'Do you think we could do this again? I mean in Texas, of course.'
'Oh definitely, Liam. I've always got a list of Texas barbeque foods I wanna try! Anyway, we better head inside. Good night, Liam.'
'Good night, Yuki.'
'And Liam...'
'Yeah?'
'When you said I could be yours, did you mean it?'
'Y-Yeah... I did...'
Both Yuki and Liam's cheeks turned a bright red after the confession, them shyly looking at each other.
'Would you wanna be mine, Yuki?'
Yuki held Liam's hand ever so lightly and leaned towards him, gently kissing his lips, chuckling seeing Liam's shocked face.
'Maybe I will...' Yuki took out his keycard from his trousers' pocket. 'See you in the morning, Flash.'
'You too, Yukes.'
First Day
After the airport, we will go to my father's house. We took the MRT, but you can also take the bus. Our flight to the house takes more than 2 hours. We had four stops to change trains. There are different MRT lines in Singapore, but our line is the red line, better known as the NS (North-South Line). There is a map for each station that you can see, and it says how many hours or minutes it will take you to get to your destination.
When we got off at Sembawang Station, we found many stalls, food courts, and convenience stores. and after we cross, there's a mall, so you won't get bored and hungry there. When we left the mall, we saw the bus stop, but that was only an option because you can also walk to your house if you are close. In our case, we were at the end, so we took the bus. When we got off the bus, there was a food court, better known as Hawkers, and there was also a convenience store.
I just noticed that here in the Philippines, the driver is on the left side, while in Singapore, it is on the right side. Also, the people there are really disciplined because when they actually cross, it is only on the pedestrian line, and they wait for the green light before crossing.
That's it for my first day in Singapore.
so there's this worldbuilding/book project called terra firma, it's on reddit. they have a discord, where others also share their worlds. unlike them mine is literally fanfic of terra firma. i have two: one that acts a lot more like how kaiserreich is to vanilla HOI4 (basically a whole new world) and one that's like BNW to TNO (slight changes).
we have:
Terra Firma: The Red Eagle and its prequel Terra Firma: Red Star Rising. Basically if you look at the canon TF map you'll see that Russia is split and fascist. This is basically a wholesome Soviet Union timeline where Russia is absolutely not split. In fact they're a world power now. A very powerful socialist state very keen on interspace cooperation and whatnot.
Terra Firma: The Lion City. A Singapore-centric story. How has it changed? How has the collapse of China and the radicalisation of Southeast Asia affected it? What about India's rise? And deep down, the fabric of society. It is unravelling. The once-fiercely protected status quo of racial peace has been broken by the introduction of the other species: or will it be strengthened? Can Singapore weather the Age of Absurdism? This one is very fun because I live here. I will see what changes: it will be so familiar but not. Marina Bay, land of tourist attractions still stands, but other things have changed. The MRT is bigger and better than ever, cars sidelined in the eternal chase of a green city. Yishun has actually become a safe place to live. To a Singaporean it would seem very familiar: MRT, GbtB, MBS, Orchard, it's there. But at the same time, cars aren't here anymore, no Takashimaya, nuclear power, Siloso Beach is changed, restaurants are moving out. Singapore is different. It even feels different: the way people act, move. Welcome to 2068.
This triggered an old memory but when we first moved to singapore and were still living in malaysia half the time (pre gps and smartphone era) my dad used to own a book of street maps, street directory sg i think and it would have like addresses and maps and fastest ways to get there by like ca/mrt etc, I remember in malaysia having to sit in the middle w my brother and we'd just navigate our dad by reading him the map and penciling it before hand and looking out for street signs to tell him where to turn. Up to now my eldest brother still has a near perfect memory of sg roads even though they've changed quite a bit by the landscape he knows the road names so well he can navigate like any taxi driver.
The Evolution of the MRT Line in Singapore: Enhancing Connectivity and Mobility
Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system has significantly evolved since its inception in 1987. The MRT line in Singapore has played a crucial role in transforming the city-state's transportation landscape, providing a reliable, efficient, and sustainable mode of travel for millions of commuters every day. Over the years, the MRT network has expanded to cover more ground, connecting various parts of the island and reducing the dependence on private vehicles.
The introduction of the North-South Line marked the beginning of Singapore's journey towards building a comprehensive MRT network. Subsequently, new lines such as the East-West Line, Circle Line, and Downtown Line were added to the system, expanding connectivity and improving access to key areas across the island. The planning and construction of these lines were driven by the government's vision to create a seamless and integrated public transportation network that caters to the diverse needs of Singaporeans.
One of the significant milestones in the evolution of the MRT line in Singapore was the completion of the North-East Line, which was the first fully automated underground line in the country. This technological advancement not only enhanced the efficiency of the MRT system but also set a new standard for urban transportation in the region. The continuous upgrades in train technology, station facilities, and operational processes have further elevated the overall commuting experience for passengers.
In recent years, the importance of sustainability and environmental conservation has become a key focus for Singapore's MRT system. Initiatives such as energy-efficient trains, regenerative braking systems, and solar panel installations have been implemented to reduce the network's carbon footprint and promote eco-friendly practices. These green initiatives not only benefit the environment but also contribute to creating a more livable and resilient city for future generations.
Looking ahead, the future of the MRT line in Singapore is poised for exciting developments. With upcoming projects like the Thomson-East Coast Line and Cross Island Line, the MRT network will continue to expand and evolve to meet the growing needs of the population. By incorporating smart technologies, improving connectivity to residential and industrial areas, and enhancing last-mile solutions, the MRT system is set to play an even more significant role in shaping Singapore's transportation ecosystem.
The evolution of the MRT line in Singapore reflects a commitment to enhancing connectivity, promoting sustainability, and improving the overall quality of life for residents. As the city-state continues to innovate and invest in its public transportation infrastructure, the MRT system will remain a vital pillar of Singapore's success story.
Significance of MRT Line Expansion for Singapore's Transportation System
The MRT line in Singapore has played a pivotal role in transforming the city-state's transportation landscape since its inception. With the continuous expansion of the MRT line network, Singapore has experienced numerous benefits that have significantly impacted its overall transportation system.
First and foremost, the expansion of the MRT line has helped alleviate the issue of traffic congestion on the roads. By providing a reliable and efficient alternative mode of transportation, more Singaporeans are encouraged to opt for the MRT, thus reducing the number of cars on the road. This reduction in traffic congestion not only leads to smoother traffic flow but also contributes to a decrease in carbon emissions, promoting a cleaner and greener environment.
Moreover, the MRT line expansion has enhanced connectivity across different parts of Singapore. As new MRT stations are added to the network, residents in various neighborhoods are offered greater accessibility to key amenities, businesses, and recreational areas. This improved connectivity not only benefits daily commuters but also boosts economic activity by facilitating the movement of people across the city more seamlessly.
Furthermore, the expansion of the MRT line reflects Singapore's commitment to sustainable urban development. By investing in public transportation infrastructure, the city-state is prioritizing the use of mass transit over private vehicles, promoting a more sustainable and eco-friendly mode of transportation. This shift towards a greener transportation system aligns with Singapore's goal of becoming a more environmentally conscious and sustainable city.
In addition to environmental benefits, the MRT line expansion also contributes to enhancing the overall quality of life for Singaporeans. With improved connectivity and accessibility, individuals are able to travel more efficiently and cost-effectively, saving both time and money in their daily commute. This increased convenience not only improves the daily commute experience but also enhances the overall well-being of residents by reducing travel-related stress and hassles.
The expansion of the MRT line in Singapore holds significant importance for the city-state's transportation system. With benefits ranging from reduced traffic congestion and enhanced connectivity to promoting sustainability and improving quality of life, the continuous expansion of the MRT line plays a crucial role in shaping Singapore's urban landscape for the better.
Green Initiatives Implemented in Singapore's MRT Line
As one of the most efficient and sustainable modes of transportation in Singapore, the MRT line plays a crucial role in the city-state's efforts to reduce carbon emissions and create a more environmentally friendly public transportation system. Over the years, various green initiatives have been implemented to enhance the sustainability of the MRT line and minimize its impact on the environment.
One of the key initiatives undertaken is the incorporation of energy-efficient technologies across the MRT network. From energy-efficient trains to regenerative braking systems that convert kinetic energy into electricity, these technologies help reduce energy consumption and decrease the overall carbon footprint of the MRT line.
In addition to technological advancements, Singapore's MRT line has also focused on incorporating sustainable practices in station design and operations. For instance, many MRT stations are equipped with natural ventilation systems and energy-efficient lighting to reduce electricity usage. Moreover, the integration of rooftop gardens and green spaces in some stations not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also promotes biodiversity and improves air quality in urban areas.
Furthermore, the Singapore government has been actively promoting the use of public transportation through various incentives and initiatives. These include the introduction of the Green Mark Scheme, which certifies buildings—such as MRT stations—that meet specific environmental standards. By encouraging sustainable practices in station construction and operation, the government aims to create a more eco-friendly and energy-efficient public transport infrastructure.
Another critical aspect of green initiatives in Singapore's MRT line is waste management. Efforts to minimize waste generation, promote recycling, and reduce single-use plastics have been implemented in MRT stations and trains. By raising awareness about sustainable waste practices among commuters and staff, the MRT line contributes to Singapore's broader goals of achieving a zero-waste nation.
The implementation of green initiatives in Singapore's MRT line reflects the city-state's commitment to building a sustainable and eco-friendly public transportation system. By integrating energy-efficient technologies, promoting sustainable practices, and fostering a culture of environmental awareness, the MRT line continues to set an example for efficient and environmentally responsible urban transport systems.
Train frequency in Singapore is 2 to 3 minutes during the peak hours of 7am to 9am and about 5 to 7 minutes during off-peak times.
The country is 50 km by 27 km and more than 140 stations across six MRT lines span the island. This 200km system has over three million daily ridership.
If you are thinking about it on paper, the bus running every half hour doesn’t sound so bad, until you’re waiting at the stop and you miss a bus or it’s delayed. Then you’re waiting a very, very long time. To people who never take transit, that’s probably fine. Why do you care. To people who only take transit, they’re expecting it, it’s baked in their lives. But the important part, what really impacts our cities, is what happens to people for whom transit is an option.
The spiral goes like this. You go to take the bus instead of driving, thinking “I’m going to o have a couple drinks” or “I don’t want to worry about parking where I’m going.” So you take bus. First bus is right on time. But then you transfer from your neighborhood line to the line that takes you where you actually want to go. And your bus is delayed. And it only comes every 30 minutes. And then you’re waiting, 40 minutes later, wondering where your bus is, knowing you could have driven there in 20 minutes.
Why would you ever chose to take a bus again? The bus made you waste precious time on your day off just sitting there. So next time you drive. Ridership goes down. When the transit authority asks for more money for more buses and more drivers, people point to the ridership numbers and say “why should we pay for this instead of paying for our schools/police/baseball stadium/parks/police again (let’s be real that’s who’s taking all the money)?” If we want to increase ridership we need to actually design and fund functional transit networks. If we want people to actually ride the bus we need to make it a better option than driving, which means reliable service, which you don’t get with a bus every 30 minutes.
Every 15 minutes, everywhere, all of the time.
