Summary: Immediately after the end of Book 6, Henry comes to Archie's hospital room to tell him that they can't be friends anymore. That's all it is: an angsty as fuck conversation. But hey, angst totally counts as whump which is at least better than yesterday! :P

As sweet as it was, spooning with Susan on the narrow hospital bed, with an IV in his arm and a bullethole in his gut, was not actually comfortable for either of them. Sometime around dawn, stiff and barely rested, Archie convinced her to go home. What exactly the all-night cuddle session meant for them going forward was a question they'd have to settle soon, but thankfully that time didn't seem to be now.

So he was alone, drifting in and out of sleep, when Henry returned.

"Hey," Archie mumbled.

"Hey." Henry sat in one of the plastic chairs next to the bed. He leaned forward, hands folded in front of him. Then leaned back and rubbed a hand over his head. Then stood up again and paced, as well as he could in the tight space.

"Oh, that's a good start." Archie rubbed his eyes and pushed himself up as much as he could. "What is it?"

Henry let out a long breath, and sat down again on the very edge of the chair. "Okay. Let me start by laying this out for you. Cause maybe hearing it out loud will give you the barest hint of perspective about just how bad it is." He counted off on his fingers. "One. You've had a stash of pills for who knows how long. And when I found out about it, you gave up the Vicodin and still hung on to a bottle of Oxycodone, which, I don't even know how you got that --" Archie opened his mouth to answer, but Henry cut him off -- "and I don't want to know. The point is, you deliberately hid it even after we talked. Two. You've had Gretchen's fucking phone number. And I know," he cut Archie off again as Archie tried to protest. "I know you never used it. But there is an international manhunt for her and you had her phone number. And you kept it secret. Just like the pills. Three. Last night, you knew she was coming to your apartment. Probably twenty or thirty minutes before she got there. And you didn't tell me. And you didn't tell your security detail. The ones she drugged. The ones she could have killed. They could have been warned. We could have kept them safe. We could have had a chance to catch her."

"If I'd told you, she wouldn't have come." It was the same argument he had made to Rachel last night, but in the light of day, in front of Henry's scowl, it sounded a lot less convincing.

"We don't know that. And we don't know that we wouldn't still have been able to find Susan," he added, heading off the next argument. "What we do know is that once again, you decided to keep her secrets, and leave us in the dark, no matter who it endangered."

He let that hang between them. This time Archie didn't have an argument. He wasn't sure what meds they had him on, but he knew they weren't the ones he wanted, and he knew they weren't nearly enough. Not enough to deal with the pain in his gut, and definitely not enough to deal with this, whatever this was. "Am I getting fired?" he asked finally.

"Not yet. You're going back on medical leave. You're going back to rehab."

"It was only a few pills -- "

"This is not up for discussion. This is what you are doing if you want to keep your job. You're going back on medical leave. You're going back to rehab. You're going to pass an actual psych eval, no strings pulled, no corners cut. And you're going to contact Sanchez immediately if Gretchen makes any type of contact with you, otherwise you get fired and you get arrested for obstruction of justice."

He didn't have to ask where the authority for this came from. Henry would have talked to the chief, and probably the mayor, and they would have deferred to Henry on it. Technically, Archie was Henry's boss, but everyone looked to Henry to tell them what was best for Archie. So if Henry was saying it, it was final, and there was no point arguing. "Okay."

"Okay. Good." He didn't move from his seat on the edge of the chair, and his expression didn't lighten. His eyes dropped from Archie's face to the linoleum floor, and he went silent.

"What else?"

The words came out rushed, as if he was willing himself to get them out before he could change his mind. "I'm applying for a transfer." He forced himself to look up again. "I'll stay to run the task force while you're on leave. But once you come back, I'm leaving."

Up till now, nothing Henry said had really been a surprise. But this was different. This was not only unexpected, it was completely new territory. Henry had been Archie's partner since he made detective. Henry had been there for him from day one, had been with him when they found that first body in Forest Park, and every step of the way since. Henry was as much a part of the task force as Archie was. He had never done this without Henry.

He was afraid he already knew the answer, but he had to ask, had to hear it aloud. "Why?"

Henry ran his hands over his head and shifted in his chair. Archie could tell he was having trouble sitting in the cheap chair in a way that didn't hurt his bad leg. He stared fixedly at the wall behind Archie. Finally he let the bomb drop.

"Because I can't trust you anymore." His eyes flicked briefly to Archie's face and then away again. "I can't trust you not to lie to me, and I can't trust you not to get the people around you hurt. And I can't ignore that, not now that I have Claire, and the baby on the way. I can't work with you and I can't -- " he broke off, unable to come up with the words he needed.

God, Archie wished they'd given him better drugs. This was more than he could take sober. He cracked a desperate half-smile. "Are you breaking up with me?"

But Henry didn't return the smile, didn't answer with a joke or a jibe, didn't cut him any slack. He shook his head slowly and raised his shoulders in a hopeless shrug. "Yeah, I am. There's not really a way to talk about it for friends."

"I can get better. I can do better."

Henry gave a snort of almost-laughter. "You've said that before. You say whatever you have to say to get what you want. It never means anything. And it's taken me way too long to accept that, but I finally have."

Archie was stunned. This was actually happening. He was actually losing his best friend. But then through the shock, came a moment of clarity. "This is what she wants. She wants me isolated; you're playing right into her hands --"

Henry gripped the back of the chair with a sudden violence and shoved it back against the wall. "I am? I am? No, don't fucking put that on me, Archie. If this is what she wants, she's getting it because of what you did. And if that isn't what you want maybe you should have fucking thought of that sooner."

His face was red, his fists were clenched, Archie thought for a moment he was going to grab him, drag him right out of the hospital bed and throw him on the floor.

And then he left.

Just left.

And Archie was alone.

i asked a question earlier about my friend's loser bf who has a suspended license and says he is going to buy a car from a used car dealer my friend (who is stupid) is going to get him the loan to pay for the car he says HE will pay on the loan (i doubt it) i say you need insurance for a car loan but she may just get him just a loan i dunno what that means anyway i know you need proof of insurance for a car loan he says he has been forging his insurance for years i still say they are going to check on it for the loan again i am trying to prove him wrong but can a person get car insurance with a suspended license?

Ok so I was driving home late morning a few nights ago, it was snowing pretty badly making conditions pretty bad, difficult to drive in and especially with my car (eclipse) so I was not doing any more then I could handle. I was on the highway going around 15-25 mph at most. Suddenly I began to swerve and spun out and got turned around and finally hit the guardrail, not much force because I was driving pretty slow to begin with. So the side of my car hit and I ended up facing the other direction.
