STORY

River had a perfectly normal, happy, boring childhood in Copperdale—up until they were 13, and a drunk driver robbed River of their parents, older sister, and left eye. They spent the next five bouncing from foster home to foster home as a traumatized, difficult teen with a penchant for getting into trouble. The day they turned 18, they moved to San Myshuno to become a singer-songwriter. But making it big is easier said than done, and the occasional gig doesn’t pay the bills. Struggling to make it on their own, they got a job as a bartender, and ended up loving it—not just the chance to meet new, interesting people and make fun drinks, but also to lend an ear to those who need it. Singing and writing songs became a hobby rather than a career, and River began saving up money to finally get the university degree that they never had the funds to pursue. No one expected River—headstrong, argumentative, thrill-seeking River—to announce that they wanted to become a music therapist, but to River, it just made sense: where else could they combine their love of music with their desire to help those who had been through traumatic situations like them?

But a career wasn’t the only thing River was after. At the end of the day, creating music, working as a bartender, becoming a therapist—it was all River’s way of searching for connection. Their real dream was having a big, happy family of their own. They’ve had a few failed relationships—ones that haven’t been very long-term—and despite wanting to make things work, they can’t seem to find the right person.

River’s never been one for reality TV, dating apps, or any combination thereof, but when they saw the advertisement for Rock of Love, they decided to give it a shot—there was just something about Jackson Roth that called out to them. Could this be their chance to find that real, genuine connection they keep searching for?

I don’t really listen to songs any more nowadays, but musics. All of my favourite artists/singers are either dead or... dead.

Rating music pls dont hate me #40 | Chuyện Hoa Sim - Như Quỳnh

I'm back with another throwback week! Every five entries, I'll find significant albums from the past and talk about it. Today we'll talk about Chuyện Hoa Sim by Như Quỳnh, the Vietnamese cultural icon and her culturally iconic album.

I have talked about her before. Như Quỳnh is Vietnamese-American singer who became successful in the Vietnamese Bolero scene. Her legacy had extended to have a following in Vietnam, even though she was primarily active overseas—that's how popular she is. Other than the album we'll be talking today, she has many other popular songs like Rừng Lá Me Bay and Duyên Phận. Chuyện Hoa Sim is her debut solo album.

VIETNAMESE BOLERO

Unlike her more present and popular works, Chuyện Hoa Sim has a more Western influence compared to the modern version of Vietnamese Bolero.

Bolero with it's international success spread to Viet Nam and became a popular music in South Viet Nam during the times. And when Fall of Saigon happens, the South Vietnamese people brought their music to countries like America.

Vietnamese Bolero goes for the more successful root of Cuban Bolero. The main difference between the two genre is that Vietnamese Bolero is significantly slower and more mellow than Hispanic Bolero and has traditional influence incorporated in. Vietnamese Bolero lyric theme is still romantic, but it's mostly sad songs about love.

I love the taste of older Bolero releases. It's the same way I love those synthesizers and the retro electric percussions, even if it was traditional instruments it still has the feeling. The song atmospheric nature and beat gives me strong nostalgia, even though I was not even born when this album was released.

I love playing Chuyện Hoa Sim while on a car in a late night cause you already know that you're going to have a great sleep tonight, don't worry I'm not driving.

However, there is some repetitive tone in the album, and it's gives the album a pinch of boredom over comfort. Mạnh Định is a singer who was the main supporting vocalist in the album. However, I'm okay with a solo performance through the whole album.

CONCLUSION

Chuyện Hoa Sim was a successful debut from Như Quỳnh. We can agree that she was one of the main figures that brought back Vietnamese Bolero back to the Vietnamese mainstream during the 90s and 00s. You may not believe me, but this album feels timeless.

Underrated gem(s): Mông Du - I love peak Asia Entertainment's music show performances you should search this song up and see it, Biển Dâu - 3/4 goes hard.

Tracks that i rec listening: Chuyện Hoa Sim, Người Tình Mùa Đông - this song is actually a cover of Rouge by Enka singer Naomi Chiaki, Mưa, Liên Khúc Mưa, Xin Người Về, Mưa Qua Phố Nắng.

Worst track: Lá Điêu Bông - the strings in the intro gives me the ick.

Overall score 8/10 - this is all opinion so pls no hate

Family #1: The Dolans

(this is a re-upload as I made some major changes to my mod situation, specifically the CC traits I'm using...nearly all of the traits from here on out will be from Chingyu's trait pack, just for simplicity's sake)

After a long delay of straightening out my many (many, many) mods and just generally fighting with my lack of motivation to do...things...I've finally placed my first family: the Dolans! Pictures above (left to right) are: Vincent, Donovan, Lucinda, and Lillian.

You may recognize Vincent, at least, from my first Whimsyverse project...that'll be an ongoing theme, of course, since I'm remaking all of these characters again. This time, though, instead of making them all adults, I'll be defaulting most of my major characters to teenagers for no real specific reason besides that it feels like I'm starting at the beginning of their stories. Also it's more work for me to make all of their families and I

am nothing if not a masochist...

Family Bio: Donovan Dolan is a dangerous and brilliant criminal for hire, performing everything from high-profile heists to hitman-style assassinations dispassionately for the highest bidder. However, this was not the case when he first met Lillian, an aspiring model, and their whirlwind romance ended with them married and Lillian pregnant with twins. While establishing himself as one of the most dangerous men alive, the twins Vincent and Lillian were growing up with their gentle and loving mother, who all but gave up her own aspirations to raise them. Vincent and Lillian resent their absentee and dangerous father for how he neglects his family, and for his part, it is clear that Donovan expects at least one of them to continue in his footsteps...though which one has yet to be decided.

Vincent Dolan

Meta Bio: Vincent is my version of that character we all make around high school/early college - the hyper-competent badass that’s just there to be awesome and to let us write super cool scenes. He was super cool and good at everything and had a tragic backstory and was super emo and edgy and graargh! However, as I grew, Vincent stuck with me and became a character I reused many, many times over, and as I became more competent of a storyteller (I said more competent!), he grew too. He remained the hyper-competent badass he started as (a bit of self-indulgence on my part, perhaps), but the tragedy of his backstory and the psychology of him wrestling with his trauma became more pronounced in how I wrote him. He was no longer just a bad-ass, he was a more complex character who, despite appearing to be unaffected by everything around him, was really hyper-repressed to a dangerous degree. I started writing him less as that hyper-competent Gary Stu and more as a normal man (or boy) who simply didn’t know how to express himself or process the trauma of his past - in which he watches his father kill his mother and threaten to kill his twin sister - without letting the pain that comes naturally to that trauma overwhelm him. So he simply shuts it all out. At the same time, he has drilled into his head (thanks, again, to his father) that he simply isn’t good enough. This no longer manifests as a sort of infantile, impotent angst, but rather a silent drive to always do better at everything he does - an intense focus that earned him the very fitting title “a model of intense apathy” from my friend. But one of the most fun parts of the character isn’t writing him being exceptional at everything (I actually enjoy emphasizing that he is not good at everything...anything that requires a modicum of creativity or personal expression is utterly beyond him), it’s watching him, with the help of people around him, discover the young man that he could have been. I recently wrote him smiling for the first time and it was very sweet.

Donovan Dolan

Meta Bio: Donovan has never been especially well-defined, and as such, this will be a pretty short bio. He only ever really existed as a vessel to drive Vincent’s trauma. He’s gone from being a petty thug to a master criminal to a dangerous madman. But I tend to enjoy playing him more as a sort of mirror into what Vincent could become - a hyper-competent, dangerous psychopath - a term I use more or less literally here, to emphasize his utter lack of empathy/sympathy. Like many psychopaths, he appears, outwardly, to be extremely well-adjusted, even charming and charismatic, but without the ability to relate to others. He is highly focused on his job, whatever that may be at the time.

Meta Bio: Lucinda is even less defined than Donovan, usually. Once again, she exists simply to die and provide fuel for Vincent’s tragedy. She is usually described as being exceptionally kind and gentle, the opposite of her husband, and having made a strong impression on Vincent and Lillian during their childhoods. For the Sims version, I liked to imagine her as being full of life and energy and happiness. She leans a bit more into creative endeavors, which neither of her children took after. She still lives for her children, though, and the decision to give up her dreams as a model was her own...she wanted to be a parent more than she wanted anything else.

Meta Bio: Unsurprisingly, Lillian, like her parents, has never been extremely well-defined, but I have had her appear occasionally in stories - I just never really cemented what kind of character she was. In the past, she was the polar opposite of Vincent: energetic, cheerful, impetuous. Other times she took more after their mother and was more quietly calm and confident. In this case, I decided to make her sort of a high-strung workaholic who doesn’t really know how to relate to people, mostly because that’s how she was in one of her more recent appearances. So hey, maybe that’s now her canon personality!

Oooh boy. Why do I feel like I should go straight to the replies, or else I will start talking about having a crush again? No one cares, I’m annoying, I’m sorry. Yesterday around midnight, I actually caved and told my best friend because I just couldn’t keep my feelings to myself any longer, and I was pleasantly surprised by her reaction. I didn’t want to tell her at first because we kinda tend to turn this kind of stuff into jokes, but I guess she did figure out that this time, it’s serious serious - THERE WE GO I’M OVERSHARING AGAIN I AM AN IDIOT. Anyway did I mention I love her? I don’t deserve her. She’s the best, you guys don’t even know her but I just wanted to give her a little shoutout because damn, thanks for yesterday, I thought I would explode. Also, she has an important exam in a week, so if you could send positive vibes her way, that would be great.

By the time you’re seeing this replies, I think I’m playing with Realm of Magic. I’m so excited! Last time I bought a pack on release day was with Seasons. I’m not sure who I will play this with yet. Maybe with Lucian and his girlfriend. I really hope you can somehow turn an alien into a spellcaster, even if that means he’d no longer be an alien. I don’t mind that. Whoops, hold on, was that a spoiler? Yeah, uh, Lucian is a teenager in my game at the moment, he has a girlfriend and he’s not very alien-y and I don’t care about that. Honestly…when have my aliens ever been alien-y? Miracle was the only one and she hated that (and 2019 Ronnie hates that she hated that but 2017 Ronnie didn’t know any better, long story).

Witches are something I’ve wanted in this game for a long time, so they better be good or else I’ll cry. Next up…I know everyone wants university, and I think we’ll get it, but to be fair, I don’t care about it that much. I’ll be playing university irl so I guess that makes sense. 😂 I would really like something like a band game pack, where you can form a band and have concerts and write music and…just do musician stuff, I guess. I was hoping bands would be added in Get Famous but nah, it was pretty much just acting…which I still haven’t explored. 🤦‍♀️ But yeah, band game pack is like my dream. I’m guessing it could be retro themed too, and have many references to some iconic bands?? Imagine if it was like 70s-80s inspired. Imagine THE HAIR. Did I mention I will defend weird 80s hair until the day I die? Yeah. I would really love that. I’m not saying I think a pack like this will happen, but it would be an absolute dream if it did.

TL;DR: I have a crush, I’m playing Realm of Magic and I want a band themed game pack.

psa: you can use mccc to customize lifespan length!!! i dont like how fast normal goes but long is like. So Long. so i use mccc to make everything just a Lil Longer

I know you can do that, I don’t know how but it’s possible, yes! I’m not sure if I want to go for that though, I mean MCCC breaks with almost every update and knowing me, I would forget to fix my settings every single time. I think I’ll just use ea’s long lifespan and then age up people when I feel like aging them up.

I also don’t listen to e. g. often nowadays and… Their latest album was not my cup of tea except for song or two. And my music preference is now “whatever pleases my ears” even if it will make anyone else’s ear bleed��

Yeah sure, I can share my faves from 2-3 years ago! I’m not saying “from the genre” because I know some of these aren’t that symphonic, at this point it’s all a blur to me, to be fair. Besides, I stopped caring about genres, so…yeah. Just pointing that out so no one comes for me like “how dare you say band xy is that genre”. 

Anyway, 2-3 years ago I really loved Nightwish, Within Temptation and Sonata Arctica, those were like my holy trinity, I would listen to them all the time, every single day. The latest WT album wasn’t really my cup of tea, I like their older stuff way more. SA released a new album last week, I kinda liked it but it wasn’t love at first listen. I’ll have to go back to form an opinion on it. Again, their older stuff is better in my opinion. Nightwish…I don’t know if it’s still going on, but people really liked comparing the three different singers they’ve had, and I don’t know why, I think they’re all amazing in their own way. I believe I’ve read on Instagram that new album is coming next year and I’m so excited for that. I don’t think there’s a Nightwish album I disliked.

I also really liked Delain and…Stratovarius, I think it was called? One summer I also listened to Epica a lot, but then all their songs started sounding the same to me. Sorry to any Epica fans that might be following me 😅 And I’m fairly sure I’m forgetting someone, but I believe there should be playlists on Spotify easy to find.

When I’m writing something late at night and I get stuck, it actually helps me to turn off the computer and go think about the story in bed. And ta-da, I suddenly get ideas! Some of them get lost as soon as I fall asleep, but usually the right direction stays in my head and I’m ready to pick it up as soon as I sit down to write again.

I’m still not over that last weekend. Everyone was so nice and kind and fun and I loved talking to these people so much, uni will be great with them ;-; 

The best surprise to me was that there was this person, and they would come to me a few times and ask if I wanted to hang out with them away from the drunk crowds?? (we’re Czech, of course 95% of people who went to that trip got drunk in the evening -_- :D) And that was just so nice? I’m not used to people wanting to hang out with me. Also, we had great time together, if they called now I would quit everything to hang out with them :D

I’m about to start crying again. To all you lonely people struggling out there, trust me, it gets better, you’re not always going to be lonely and miserable. I thought that would be my case, but nope, things are starting to look better. And they will eventually start looking better for you too, I just know it. Don’t give up <3

So am I! I’m not sure what to do right now. I want to play RoM, but when I come back to my NSB…do I finish Sunset’s generation requirements first, or do I just slowly start throwing these teens in? Kind of like I started working on Ross’s aspiration when it was technically still the Mint gen. Eh, I’ll figure it out.

That’s not great D: I think I’d have to do that too, if I wasn’t moving to a dorm in Prague later this month. Spending so much time on the train and having to wake up so early would kill me.

I kinda never had to deal with this before because I’ve been using foundation only for a year or so. And I’m fairly sure I’m using a lighter one now, because I definitely didn’t feel like a vampire last September :D

Thank youuu! I’m a “high waisted everything” kinda girl, so of course I had to recolour these so I could use them even more often. And I’m glad that I’m not the only one, I mean, the reblogs and likes on this post are insane.

And yay, glad you remember them! Juliet and Amber were easier to recognize, I guess, but the other two, Lily and Lavender…I haven’t posted them too much, ever. I forgot how pretty they were *-* I will definitely use them as my models for recolours and stuff.

I love how you guys assume the worst. I mean, I’m not surprised. I tend to accidentally kill my sims a lot this year. Well, you’ll find out very soon what is actually going on in these!

Also, just a side note, that child in picture #4 is Lucian and he’s not a girl, but I will admit he looks like one (and I’m fairly sure he knows that too and is okay with that, I mean, if he didn’t want to look like that, he’d beg for a haircut), so no worries. Just throwing it out there.

Salim is hard because he’s already pretty good looking, etc. He’s the dad of one of my sims who I did a BC with and founded my legacy on her, LOL(Anissa Hoffmann, she has her mom’s last name). Though I guess REALLY Salim and her mother are the founders but, I didn’t start a legacy until after her BC.

I agree, he’s definitely one of the few miracle townies who don’t need fixing.

Seriously. I’ve never really cared about berries, I’ve always prefered vanilla sims and berries were just something I created in cas from time to time and then never touched again. I still prefer vanilla sims and kinda doubt I’ll ever start another berry save.

Venues For Live Music

The best part of attending live performances in Second Life is you always get a front row view. The concerts are free, but it is customary for audience members to show their gratitude by tipping performers in the currency of Second Life (Lindens)... It is also good to support these venues in the every day cost of running the sim and paying the performers. The other good thing is that there are no parking problems, you can be in your PJs in front of your computer while your avatar dresses up and does all the dancing. When the show is over, you simply teleport back to your home, or to another venue. We often go to 4 shows an evening between 6PM and 11PM (second life time - Pacific US)

Solar Winds

This venue delivers top quality live performers every day. Prime time artists are well worth making the effort to get to hear.  Tonight we were treated to an incredible dual stream performance from Gabriel DeSilva and Erik Kottzen. The did a full hour of acoustic covers and wowed the large audience. 

Erik is a Vocal Coach, Songwriter, Guitarist, Drummer, Bassist Bringing to Second Life his vast experience, Erik's shows are in English and described as beautiful, groovy, retro to modern, heart touching and rocking featuring pop, rock, hard rock, metal, 80's, 90's, Today, covering bands from Motorhead, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Five Finger Death Punch, Guns'N'Roses, Journey, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Whitesnake, Queen to Originals and more. 

 Gabriel on his own is a talented guitarist and singer. His shows are high energy and he loves taking requests from his extensive song list. 

The show today did not disappoint.

Twilight Under the Moon

Another great venue for both live performers and tribute concerts. Always delivering high quality performers in a sim with little lag despite the popularity of its headline acts. 

Tonight we went to hear Kjjeff Kohn, a live singer streaming from Texas US... He has a repertoire of over 2000 songs and never fails to deliver heartfelt blues, smooth country and even a little crooning in occasions. Another artist to seek out and hear. 

As an added bonus, Twilight Under the Moon also presents a tribute concert from Lightening Productions. The featured artist was Bruno Mars. As usual, they brought the audience an excellent collection of live performances from the artist, great staging and lights, and the avatar performers went into detail in creating their tribute character.

My second family, like before, is Renard Bordeaux - not technically a family, but whatever.

Family Bio: Everyone knows Renard! ...or thinks they do. He’s a friendly, disarming young man who always has a smile on his face...though there’s an entire encyclopedia of meanings behind each of those smiles. Renard seems, on the surface, to be well-meaning, if not a bit bungling, but there is almost always something going on beneath the surface as he dispassionately plots and schemes for unknown purposes. Anyone who says they know Renard is either flat-out lying or deluded...as no one knows what truly lies beneath those multitudinous smiles.

Meta Bio: Renard was the second Sim I placed in my first pass of the Whimsyverse project, and he’s generally pretty similar to what he was then: a mysterious, often duplicitous, crafty individual who comes across as a well-meaning but mostly bungling doofus. Even I don’t remember his origins - I think he was just a random character I created in an early Sims game simply because I liked the name, but he has evolved over the years into a sort of Xanatos-ian trickster with machinations upon machinations. He usually ends up working towards the best interests of the heroes, but often in a roundabout way that puts him at odds with them until the very end. But no matter what he does, he always wears a multitude of smiles on his omnipresent mask hiding his true intentions. One of his defining characteristics is that he generally blends in wherever he goes, and he had a very forgettable demeanor, which is just how he likes it.
