For an example related to what made me think of it- I’m currently enjoying my Halloween
I struggle to enjoy anything right now. I’m tired all the time. We’re experimenting with my meds cocktail much of the time. A lots going on at home. Woke up this morning worried something would go wrong that would stop me from getting to go to work, the one place I actually had to wear the costume I’d been looking forward to wearing- and then, something did go very wrong, fresh in the morning, that almost did stop me from getting to go. I did get to go, but that stood to mess with my mood. My stomachs been messed up. My nerves about my commute to work have been up since i was backended a couple weeks ago.
All this to say- a lots still wrong this morning. A lots been not going my way. Some things very immediate. But I still feel like I’m getting my Halloween! And I attribute that in part to the sims 4. Why? Cause my crazy ass goes back to thinking of myself as a sim when I’m trying to engage with the world around me.
For sim holidays, when the holiday comes, they have traditions they want to do, up to five, and for every tradition they participate in, they’re closer to satisfied that they had the Holiday they wanted.
So automatically, even without formally going through that thought process, I basically found myself like- so you got to wear your costume to work, and that looks great, that’s going great- that’s 1. Your decorations still look cool, and the office decorations are neat, that’s cool. The office brought in Halloweeen flavored donuts for breakfast- i didn’t specifically decide on traditions ahead of time, so I’ll just go ahead and count that as three! And then there’s a potluck here later, that’ll be four. So I imagine I have a good amount of positive moodlets going around Halloween to counteract the negative ones, and one more cool Halloween thing and I can count my Halloween “complete” basically.
And it sounds silly but even though it’s just a game thinking through it and imagining the moodlets balancing out and all that, imagining the list of positives makes it sound like a good Halloween, imagining the positive moodlets outweighing the negative often helps me get a bit of an actual sensation of positive mood cause it gets me in a positive mindset
Alternatively- if things are going wrong, if I prioritize this mindset and decide the primary mood from it is Sad or Tense this stops me from ignoring them. I’ll do something to counteract it as soon as I can, or at least be kinder to myself for my difficulties.
You’d think this wouldn’t help the irrational moments, but it actually still does- because sims have moodlets of varying strength happen depending on their relationships with people and their personal traits and whatnot (a gloomy sim will be sad from more things and sadder about things that make the average sim sad, for example.)
So if I’m tracking moodlets and I’m listed as Happy or Focused, but then suddenly something happened and I’m crying, I pretty much go ahead and mark that as a plus 8 moodlet so I’m Very Sad or Very Tense or worse and it overrides everything else for a while, giving me time to process what happened and making sure I’m more likely to actually try and do some kind of self care when I get the chance.
(Note: I include some emotional inertia moodlets not in the canon game, which i think affects how well some of this works, but I think it’s valid because I will definitely push down negative emotions pretty hard without this until I’m at that crying stage otherwise)
There are a lot of legitimate issues with the sims 4 but when I consciously turn my thoughts to it, it actually helps my well-being a stupid amount. Not like, because the game is good, but because of how the sims worked and how I thought about how the sims worked, and how I apply that mentally to myself and real people, if that makes sense
