The Orange Octopus, named for Margery's favourite colour and heritage as a fisherman's daughter. It's rather simple, but there's room upstairs to expand if the business does well.

(I also had almost no good/functional cc for bars and ended up having to use the expensive-as-fuck maxis one, haha. I'll have to hunt for something better.)

Tally Driftwood 1282 - 1326

Tally Driftwood was the spouse of Reynilda Driftwood, the second daughter of our generation 0: Geoffrey and Matilda.

Tally was raised by a pirate crew since the moment he lost both of his parents. Ever since that moment he withdrew into himself and thought that marrying and love wasn't for him.

But when he met Reynilda something change inside of him. He fell in love with her so much that he wanted to settle down and get marry.

After the wedding, Tally decided to go back to Ireland when he was born and make peace with his past bringing Reynilda with him. They were happy during the months they spent there.

But after Reynilda's sister, Clarice, passed away, her husband Henry sent Reynilda a letter asking for help to take care of her daughter Clementia and his newborn Morris. But Henry died that year as well, leaving the children alone.

Reynilda was pregnant at the time and Tally went back to England to help his wife. Soon, they adopted Clementia and Morris as if they were their own and started their new life in England.

Tally loved writing cavalry books and he taught Clementia the art of writing and reading.

Reynilda and Tally had 15 children along the years, but only 6 of them reached adulthood: Tome, Payne, Martha, Elias, Joyse and Aubray.

Reynilda passed away in her last pregnancy while giving birth to quatriplets: Denis, Joyse, Aubray and Sabeline. Sabeline died in the labour, same as Reynilda.

After this, Tally never fully recovered. This happened during the Great Famine that struck England from 1315 to 1317. He was alone with seven mouth to feed, four of them were still babies. When his son Denis died, he made an agreement with an evil witch that he had heard of in one of his journeys with the pirates when he was young: his whole family will survive the famine, but he would have to give away his youngest daughter when she reach adulthood.

He's only choice was to agree.

When Clementia met Isaac and fell in love with him, they got married and Tally decided to leave England with his children for the last time, leaving Clementia to live her life with her husband in the house that had always belonged to her. And also, by leaving, he thought that he could escape the destiny of her youngest daughter...

In Ireland again, he focused on his children, writing and farming. His last days were peaceful and when he noticed that the end was near, he told his son Payne the whole truth about the agreement with the witch and made him swear that he would protect Joyse and Aubray at all cost.

And... in that moment. Tally passed away.

Remember when I made this post talking about Jaws? A good friend found one for Thread The Needle.

Intro

Sleep Token are different, like super major big time different. Softly spoken pop aesthetic meets discordant percussive metal different. Different is great. It tests and pulls at the boundaries by which we choose to asses music by. All in all ST (sleep token) is very close to my heart in terms of what its intentions are and how it tries to achieve it. I worked very closely with ST on the song framing and ensuring that every phase of each song was being presented in the way they originally intended. Much like a prog record there isn’t any sense of an ABAB type repetition that’s common in pop music, instead it’s a textured journey down multiple avenues and pathways, showing and highlighting different perspectives of the song along the way. I could write about this project for some time but I’m very aware that this is supposed to be an engineering / mixing focused blog so I shall move on.

In terms of the space, we ended up at Monnow valley. This happened to be my first ever solo flight session at MV, although nerve wrecking I think it came together rather harmoniously without any negative turns.

The initial outline from ST was to achieve as much as humanly possible without the need for rigid quantisation after the fact. Every play / part, had to emphasis what else was going on. Tricky, but great fun to achieve.

Tracking // Guitars & Bass

All tracked back here at G1, using an array of options like the Kemper, Axe fx and plugin amp sims. The attention wasn’t so much on ‘authentic amp sounds’ but more along the lines of ‘how cool can this sound, can it sound more cool?’ Quite a different approach considering some would be more enclined to try and ensure that ‘this does definitely sound like a 5150’ over what it actually does for the context that it is sitting within (the songs DNA)

** Cool bit, for the end part of TTN, the guitars were tracked 6 times. 3 different takes / tones each side. More tone, more drone.** – George

Bass, I think is a combination of my jazz bass and some software stuff, obviously my poor 4 string won’t handle going down to drop ZZZZ so that’s when the synth stuff needs to kick in, however I do believe at those parts the Jazz is playing the upper octave for that sense of movement and clank.

How freaking amazing is this dudes voice? Seriously? I used a different mic for each song, each time he sounds amazing. This is what it’s all about, right here. A great voice always sounds great. We used my modded Oktava m319 for one track, the AKG c414 b-uls for another and the sm7b on one more. Who cares what processing went on, just listen to how mega dope his voice is. Can you tell I appreciate his voice? Haha!

Updated view of Buenos Vientos, the downtown subhood of Driftwood. Still not sure about either of those names. Driftwood was the name of the Maxis terrain I used, and Buenos Vientos is a bad parody of Buenos Aires.

I used the University Village sc4 terrain by dimsim78 at Mod the Sims.

All the lots are built by me, some built from imagination and memory, but most are inspired by floorplan websites, The Sims 3, Simcity 4 and other games. The red brick building in the second picture is a replica of antisocialbunny's high school, because I tried to build my own school and failed. Two houses are also replicas of lots from a custom world I saw in a let's play over ten years ago (Seri's TS3 Supernatural playthrough).

My idea for the entire neighborhood was to be more heavily inspired by Buenos Aires and other argentine cities/towns, and some buildings are, but most are not. There's a diner, for example, which is not a thing here, I just find diner designs fun. I guess using references from games made in other countries made it more difficult. I'm not expecting to achieve my goal perfectly in a game with a building system that was made with american suburbia in mind. For me, realistic and cohesive architectural and urban design is not a requirement to enjoy the game anymore.

I did something I kind of regret because my computer crashes a lot now... But I can't really undo it so I am rolling with it.

I added a downtown area to Driftwood and created some Sims to own businesses there. It started off well, but the crashing in downtown is a huge pain... So I may need to move those Sims to the regular Driftwood and just keep their businesses in downtown. It seems like it doesn't crash when Sims from my main neighborhood goes to downtown, but for some reason I can't really let someone live there without crashing...

I reinstalled the 4 GB patch and followed video tutorials on how to get crashing and pink flashing to stop, but it doesn't solve it in the downtown area. My main neighborhood (Driftwood) is fine though and I am grateful for that. I just don't know what's wrong in the downtown area.

The posts that follow will showcase some downtown Sims I created and also randomly generated downtownies that became a part of my story. Enjoy!

Reminiscing about The Sims

The first Sims game I played was, well, The Sims. I had two older sisters that bought it and shared a computer and even though I was really little, they’d help me play. I couldn’t have been more than 3 or 4 at the time so I didn’t know how to spell. They’d put in the rosebud cheat for me and help me name my Sims. My oldest sister really loved building houses for me so I’d always watch her do that. Now that I think about it, that was the only thing us three sisters ever did together as kids. 

I was six when the Sims 2 came out, so a little older. My middle sister had lost interest in the Sims by then so it became my oldest sister and me sharing a copy. And by “sharing” I mean most of the time she would play and I would sit there and watch. But once she started going to college I had more time to play Sims 2 by myself after school. Seriously, the second I would get off the bus I would go right to Sims 2. My childhood sucked and the Sims was a great way to drown out my parents constantly fighting.

For the Sims 2, I would always make my own neighborhood. Driftwood was the templet I always used and would build it from the ground up. I would use a few community lots, but for the most part, I made all the sims and the houses. And my little town expanded further and further as expansions came out. My favorite Sims 2 expansions were Bon Voyage, Apartment Life, and Pets. 

Finally, I was 11 when the Sims 3 game out, and I didn’t even know that it did until I was at Game Stop with my mom getting a birthday present for my brother and I saw Sims 3 for sale with World Adventure. I had a good bit of money saved up from things like babysitting, lawn mowing, selling cans and I never wanted to buy anything, but I did decide to buy the Sims 3. The first time I played it, I HATED it. It was so different from the Sims 2! I couldn’t make a blank world, only Sunset Valley. So I actually bulldozed all the houses and kicked all the Sims out. As you could imagine, it took a long time to completely rebuild Sunset Valley. But then it was finally time to play. Except, when my Sims started aging up when I wasn’t playing them, I pretty much had a mental breakdown. Like all the work I put in was for nothing. After that, I actually didn’t play the Sims 3 for a couple of years and returned to Sims 2.

One day I was talking to my brother about the Sims and I mentioned how I wishes Sims 2 had an open world like Sims 3. So he asked, “why not just play Sims 3 then?” and I said that I didn’t like how the sims aged without you playing them. And well, that’s when I learned you can turn off aging. I’ve been playing the Sims 3 ever since!

For the longest time I didn’t have a set family to play with. The cycle was that a new expansion would come out and I would make a single Sim, playing her until the next expansion came out and I would make a new one. It wasn’t until long after the Sims 3 series ended that I made Julian. The resort feature that came with Island Paradise was one of my favorite things the game ever added. I, of course, would make beach resorts. But then I’d start making bed and breakfasts, cheap motels, and eventually cabin lodges. That was when Julian was created and eventually Miss May I would be born! 

Sims 4 we don’t talk about on this blog.
