boy explorers comics #1, 1946 (harvey publications) as one of the many simon-kirby kid gangs (and often overlooked as it ran for 2 issues) ((ultimately 1 issue as the second was a black and white ashcan sent to subscribers only)) the title captured both the essence of post-war american youth along with S&K's originality in such a unique way. during world war ii, we watched the newsboy legion maintain order fighting crime here at home. we saw the orphaned boy commandos fight the world war on all fronts. we were told tales of the young allies, an elite squad of young superhero sidekicks that kicked the shit out of the nazis. in a way, the stage was already designed for simon & kirby to tell these stories-- the landscapes were drawn from their expieriences in everyday life. but what about life after the war had ended? let alone WHAT their next set of orphans were going to do, what stage were these stories going to be told on? though my appreciation for simon-kirby war stories is unmatched, the short-lived adventures of orphans gadget, gashouse, smiley, and zero (under the supervision of their adopted father commodore sinbad) aboard a clipper ship are, in my humble opinion, some of the most wholesome they told. their imaginations ran rampant, sending the boy explorers anywhere from a trip to the moon to islands solely of women, or even realities that were actually just dreams. it's almost as if the boy commandos left their posts after years of dedicated service to their country, and began to enjoy their escapade-filled retirements at the ripe age of 12. there's no simon-kirby creation that disappoints, and i can only imagine where these stories could have gone had the title picked up more steam. anyways, i scored this copy which i'd been eyeing for a long while & i've highlighted some cool panels in the foreground, along with the AMAZING double-page spread in the background. . . #goldenagecomics #igcomics #simonandkirby #boyexplorers (at Worcester, Massachusetts) https://www.instagram.com/p/Chu_LvIuJk3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#JackedKirby - Oh Man.. Come On Marvel!!! 💥💥💥 So if you look at our last post from last week you saw a letter written by comic legend Will Eisner pleading with Marvel to return Jack Kirby’s original art. The dispute over the art ownership was at the center of an ongoing battle over creator credits, ownership rights and other things between Marvel and some of its employees. No matter what side you fall on, It was a mess to say the least. So one would think Marvel would learn from all this bad experience... 💥💥💥 Flash forward to today. A new Captain America comic hit shelves from writer/artist @erikjonlarsen called Captain America: The End. This comic, along with other comics that feature other characters, is meant to tell the “Final” story for each character out of continuity. Basically skipping ahead to the last chapter of that characters run. The Cap storyline is supposed to be heavily influenced by Jack’s 60s/70s run on the character... and even invoke a bit of a Kamandi vibe at the same time. This sounds GREAT! But then the issue was released and we get this mistake on the credit page... 💥💥💥 Under the three editors names in the credits (Chris ROBINSON, Jordan D White and CB Cebulski) we get BASED ON CHARACTERS CREATED BY STAN LEE AND JACK KIRBY... ummm... er... what? Cap’s creation came from the team of Simon and Kirby. Stan had NOTHING to do with this particular character AT ALL. 💥💥💥 Now this blunder was owned up to by Marvel, and in no way do I blame Erik Larsen or any other of the creative staff for this snafu. But when you have the checkered past regarding creators rights that Marvel has, its hard to see this as just another “awww shucks... it’s an honest mistake” moment. A new version of the book is said to be being produced... but this batch is already in the wild. Oh well... we all know who really created Cap. Thanks Joe and Jack!!! #Cap #JackKirby #SimonAndKirby #TheEnd #ErikLarsen #Kirby #KingKirby #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #IGComics #ComicsOfIG #Marvel #StanLee https://www.instagram.com/p/B8NbM3zhcNd/?igshid=9fsn73w5gyac

#JackedKirby - Flashback to an In Store Meeting with The King of Comics!!! 💥💥💥 I saw this pic posted over in the Jack Kirby! Facebook group by Jose Luis Moral and I was mesmerized by the magic of it. In the pic you see a young man looking down at Kirby’s table, having a convo with the King himself. And behind Jack we see his loving wife Roz. It has to be from 81/82 because you can see various Pacific Comics titles in the background on the shelves!!! 💥💥💥 The thing that stood out to me was the portfolio book towards the bottom of the pic that has a large splash page on display (closeup is pic 2). The character on display here is Stuntman, the 1946 Simon and Kirby creation for Harvey Comics. The page was part of Kirby’s Masterworks portfolio from 1978 and can be seen in its pencil form in pic 3 of this post... absolutely gorgeous!!! 💥💥💥 It was a lot of fun reverse searching the elements of this picture to figure out what that page was. It caught my eye immediately and I wasn’t sure what it was... but I’m glad I figured it out. I would LOVE to get my hands on one of those 1978 portfolios. Someday... one cool piece of trivia about Stuntman: it featured a couple of characters with very alliterative names Don Daring and Sandra Sylvan. I thought Stan was the genius writer who came up with those awesome alliterative names for Marvel??? 🤔🤔🤔 Weird.... #JackedKirby - Break That 4th Wall baby!!! 💥💥💥 Given the current popularity of characters like Deadpool in 2020, the concept of comic characters “breaking the 4th wall” and talking to the readers directly is pretty common. And some may be shocked to know that it isn’t a new concept at all. As a matter of fact, it was commonly used at Marvel for quite sometime. Stan and Jack (and others) often times popped up in comic stories, interacting within the story and blending the world of comics with our world. But you may be shocked to know that this practice goes back even further than that... to the 1940s!!! 💥💥💥 After numerous appearances in Detective Comics and World’s Finest Comics, The Boy Commandos we’re ready for their own title. The brass at DC green lit the war/kid gang title from Simon and Kirby and it was definitely popular. So for their first solo issue Kirby and Simon pulled out all the stops... including possible my announcing the death of their own team and putting themselves as well as the DC editorial staff into the story!!!! 💥💥💥 In the story “Satan Wears a Swatstika” (published in Boy Commandoes #Issue1 in December of 1942) we get this crazy sequence over two pages: The Editors at DC get word that their biggest war hero characters may have been killed in action... and they bust into the Simon & Kirby studios (pic 3) to break the bad news to the guys! (Pic 1 and 2). Kirby and Simon are heartbroken at the idea that their lovable gang of misfit kid soldiers may be gone... so they do the most obvious thing they can. They call on another one of their current heroes, The Sandman, to help sort it all out!!! 💥💥💥 This is a great story, and I think it will serve as a topic we cover on the Jacked Kirby podcast real soon. It is regularly cited as possibly the earliest example of 4th wall breakage to occur in comics. And if it’s not the earliest, it’s certainly one of them... 💥💥💥 #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #BoyCommandos #DCComics #DetectiveComics #WorldsFinestComics #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #IGComics #ComicsOfIG #SimonAndKirby #SimonAndKirbyStudios https://www.instagram.com/p/B8wcvYJB_Ob/?igshid=o4xe5o4kffuy

#JackedKirby - The Kirby-ization of Sandman 2.0 💥💥💥 One of Jack’s first works for DC comics was a collaborative effort alongside then partner Joe Simon on a re-imagining of a character from the line, The Sandman, in the 1940s. Years later, upon leaving Marvel for DC in the early 1970s Kirby and Simon reunited for another go on the character. The result was The Sandman #Issue1 in March of 1974 in a one shot... but the one shot sparked an interest in the character that spawned a series written by Michael Fleischer and penciled by Ernie Chan. 💥💥💥 Starting in May of 1975 Fleischer and Chan started the new series, but sales were lagging almost instantaneously. So Jack, who was not super busy due to all his 4th World books being canceled and with a contract to fulfill, jumped back in on #Issue4 of the series (August of 1975). Still being written by Fleischer, Kirby did the interiors and covers for the remaining 3 issues. 💥💥💥 While Chan was serviceable on issues 2/3, Jack announced his re-entrance into the book with his signature chapter beginning splash page. Chan utilizes mostly traditional 6/8 panel grids... Jack went big right off the rip with his full page action packed Splash (pic 1). Sandman himself is oozing with Kirby’s signature style, especially his outstretched hand that features those trademark Kirby chunky fingers! 💥💥💥 I especially love the irony of the blues featured on the cover (pic 2) announcing Kirby drawing the book. DC clearly thought (or at least hoped) this would drive sales of the book... so Kirby’s name was still ringing bells. But this runs contrary to the way DC canceled many of his titles early and unceremoniously... they never really let him get his footing on any book, yet were quick to announce his attachment to his next project over and over again! 💥💥💥 #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #Sandman #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #70sComics #ComicsOfThe70s #RoyerKirby #SimonAndKirby #TheSandman https://www.instagram.com/p/B5k8rMphP_S/?igshid=fophnt0bsv1z

#JackedKirby - Enter... The Buzzard!!! 💥💥💥 The character of Manhunter first appeared in Adventure Comics #Issue58 and went by the name of Paul Kirk. In #Issue73 of the series (published in April of 1942) Jack Kirby and Joe Simon took over the character and introduced another alter ego for him... Rick Nelson (although they would change it back to Paul Kirk next issue. Weirdness for another post!). But today we are gonna focus on his first villain... The Buzzard!!! 💥💥💥 The Buzzard is a costumed criminal who is making a name for himself terrorizing Empire City... robbing the rich and the police can do nothing about it! When Nelson’s good friend Officer Donovan meets his demise at the Buzzard’s hands, Nelson takes on the costumed hero persona of the Manhunter to track him down and bring him to justice!!! 💥💥💥 I love the design of this character, whose style and design looks like some future Kirby creations to come. In some ways the face looks a lot like Annihulus to me... almost insect like in its proportions. Maybe it’s the green costume that is making me think of Annihilus... he also reminds me a lot of Ditko’s early incarnations of The Vulture from the pages of Spider-Man. Either way, I love how Kirby & Simon used alternate lay out ideas and non traditional grids to bring this golden age story to life! A classic rogue... who is of course unmasked and defeated by the hero in the end!!! (Pic 4 of course!). 💥💥💥 #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #Manhunter #DCComics #AdventureComics #NationalComics #TheBuzzard #SimonAndKirby #JoeSimon #GoldenAgeComics #ComicsOfThe40s #40sComics #GoldenAge #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #IGcomics #ComicsOfIG #AnthologyComics #PaulKirk #RickNelson #KirbyVillains https://www.instagram.com/p/BzGPVV1BtHf/?igshid=1s9ic06genyar

#JackKirby - The Commandos Are Coming!!! 💥💥💥 Jack Kirby and Joe Simon are most well known for co-creating Captain America... but what if I told you they had another war themed comic creation besides the Star Spangled hero... and came from DC Comics, not Marvel??? 💥💥💥 The Boy Commandos first appeared in June of 1942 in Detective Comics #Issue64 over at DC Comics. Having left Timely Comics (now Marvel) over a royalties discrepancy, they were hired by National (DC) Comics and allowed to create numerous titles. The Sandman, Manhunter and others were produced... but one of their most successful creations had to be The Boy Commandos!!! 💥💥💥 The team consists of: Andre (France), Alfie (Britain), Jan (Netherlands) and Brooklyn (USA)... all kid soldiers from around the globe stationed in Europe. They are led by Captain Rip Carter and fight against the “Ratzies” (their juvenile but accurate nickname for the Nazi’s) across the European theater of war! 💥💥💥 Pic 1 of this post shows Simon (on the left) and Kirby (on the right) posing at the drafting table with the opening splash page featuring the team... Kirby is credited with the story and pencils, and Simon is credited with editing and inking! In Pic 2 we see the actual colored and printed page as it appeared in Detective Comics #64. The pic is credited as 1941, so it’s possible they were working on these characters and this issue up to 6 months in advance of publication!!! 💥💥💥 #JackKirby #Kirby #KingKirby #JoeSimon #KirbyAndSimon #SimonAndKirby #BoyCommandos #DetectiveComics #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #40sComics #ComicsOfThe40s #IGComics #SimonAndKirbyStudios https://www.instagram.com/p/Bu4DPSgBDW8/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1xwd39w6z37je
