Memories of Growing up in Sweden
Jorane Milot - Visual Literacy and Culture
Description:
The main focus of this photograph is the broken mirror hiding the young man’s identity. There’s so much potential with what the meaning could be, as it could represent so much. Dysmorphia, dissociativeness or a coming of age. Dysmorphia because he can’t recognize his face anymore, every time he looks upon a mirror his face is always different as if it deforms. Dissociative because he rejects who he is, his identity is meaningless to him which is why his face is smashed. Coming of age because him taking off his glasses and looking into the distance is to show a sort of realization, but considering he’s a teenager, his emotional state isn’t ideal.
Formal Analysis:
Lines, colour, balance and emphasis are all used in the photograph. The main goal was to emphasize the fact he’s faceless, it’s the most important part of the picture. The colours are vintage, and so are his clothes. The lines of the mirror crack bring balance to the picture as it is meant to seem slightly overwhelming, which is why he didn’t leave much free space. I do feel like this art piece is mostly for aesthetics than to send a message, but it carried a lot more.
Interpretation:
As I’ve previously said, there were three ways this photograph can go; Dissociativeness, dysmorphia, and a coming of age. If I were to build off a story off of the picture, I’d imagine it in the ’70s. He’d be turning 18 in a week and has wanted to spend some time alone to take so much in. A new chapter would start in his life, he’s experienced a lot and now has to create new experiences with what he’s learnt. I really connect the whole vibe of the picture with themes such as teenagehood; the first kiss, getting a car, college, losing friends and making new. Though this also includes mental changes, like maturity, patience, confidence and depression, just overall lessons you learn in life that change you.
