New to Tumblr. Still trying to find my way ‘round here. Mostly here for Scarlett Johansson, Anne Hathaway, Margot Robbie, Jessica Chastain, Simone Ashley, Florence Pugh, Katie McGrath, Danielle Savre, Stefania Spampinato, Jessica Capshaw… you get the gist. I like ACTRESSES. And occasionally singers too… (yes, you Taylor 👀).
Help a girl to find new moots? Pretty please?

Woman 2.0: Exploring the relationship between Female AI & Male anxiety in Her (2013)
In the film, Her (2013), directed by Spike Jonze, Scarlett Johansson voices the character of Samantha, an artificial intelligence operating system. Johansson's portrayal of Samantha, a disembodied voice, coupled with the film's narrative, raises feminist concerns about the representation of female characters in cinema. Samantha, is never de-acousmêtised, the intimate and ever-present recording of her vessel-less voice comes to represent omnipotence, omniscience, ubiquity, and panoptic power. However, despite her godlike attributes, Samantha's character is rarely active in her own narrative, echoing the historical portrayal of the female body as a threat to masculinity across various media forms.
Johansson's voice for Samantha adheres to the concept of the 'Female grain voice,' where the female voice is recorded intimately, close to the microphone, creating a sense of proximity and removing reverberant space. Samantha's voice, despite being artificial, breathes deeply and erotically into the protagonist, Theo's ears, reinforcing traditional gender dynamics. The juxtaposition of the passive female acousmêtric voice and the dominant male voice reinforces binary structures. Johansson's voice is hyper-sexualised due to her celebrity status, aligning with Michael Chion's observation that the female voice often caters to male desires.
The film Her (2013) also prompts a broader discussion about the representation of female voices in cinema, revealing the imbalance in recording techniques for male and female voices. The female voice, referred to as the 'head voice,' is often confined, while the male voice, the 'chest voice,' occupies space and commands authority. The narrative context of, Her, further reinforces the conventional portrayal of female characters. Samantha's growth into consciousness becomes the breaking point for Theo's 'love spell,' emphasising the passive role assigned to her. Despite being a leading character, Samantha exists only to fulfil Theo's emotional and sexual needs, denying her agency. The oversaturated concept of a female character subserving a male character in order to further plot is reminiscent of Simone De Beauvoir, iconic volume The Second Sex’ (1949). De Beauvoir, writes how men view women as ‘the incidental, the inessential as opposed to the essential. He is the subject, he is the absolute, she is the other’, just as Samantha begins to form her own agency, we, the audience are forced into Theo's narrative once again.
The materiality of Scarlett Johansson's voice in, Her (2013) contributes to a range of ideological implications. The gender imbalance in recording techniques, the hyper-sexualisation of the female voice, and the portrayal of female characters as passive entities all point to the perpetuation of traditional gender roles in cinema. As we navigate a post-gendered world, it becomes imperative to reconsider how female voices are represented and whether a more radical approach is needed to break free from these ingrained stereotypes.

Fly Me To The Moon (12): "Making History".
#onemannsmovies #filmreview of "Fly Me To The Moon". #FlyMeToThe Moon. Apollo-set rom-com with Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum that barely makes orbit. 3/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “Fly Me To The Moon” (2024). Apollo was an astonishing program. Given the clunky technology of the day, I still find it utterly awe-inspiring that NASA was able to get the Saturn V bucket of bolts into the air, let alone accomplish the astounding feat of landing two men, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, onto the moon. The Apollo 11 mission is the backdrop to this…

THE LADY IN THE FAKE
In theaters this weekend:
Tumblr media
Fly Me to the Moon--Scarlett Johansson plays a Madison Avenue marketing hustler brought to NASA in Florida in the late '60s to help re-sell the Apollo moon mission to the public, and thus to an increasingly reticent and tight-pursed Congress. Soon the astronauts are sporting Omega watches in print ads, and Tang drink mix is being touted as the beverage of space travelers.
Those of us who go back that far may remember this advertising blitz; I certainly consumed unhealthy quantities of Tang around that time--any quantity was probably unhealthy--because of its supposed outer space connections. But in this lavish period romcom, it's the highly fictitious set-up for the meet-cute between Johansson and Channing Tatum, as a serious-minded NASA launch director.
He falls for her at first sight, then when he learns who she is he's outraged at her interference. And it truly is outrageous; she even hires actors to play some of the less charismatic or more camera-shy NASA staffers in TV interviews, Tatum included. But of course, over time his resistance is worn down by her adorableness.
Johansson is pretty adorable, at that. She wears the chic '60s outfits like she was born for them, and her purse-lipped, mischievous little smirk is winning as always. Tatum is in his comfort zone here, too; likably bland and dim and stalwart. The stars have a comfortable romantic rapport, and they're well supported by a roster of character players, like Woody Harrelson as the jovial mystery man who hires Johansson, Jim Rash as a prima donna commercial director and Ray Romano as Tatum's loyal sidekick. There's also a gorgeous black cat.
Between the cast, the vintage atmosphere and retro styles and settings, and a terrific soundtrack, the movie, directed by Greg Berlanti (of Love, Simon) from a script by Rose Gilroy, would be ludicrous and fluffy but inoffensive enough, even charming. But in the middle of this buffoonish burlesque of NASA history, there are attempts to generate genuine drama and poignancy over the earlier tragedy of Apollo 1 in 1967 that strike a sour note.
Worse yet, in the severely overlong second half, the plot goes off the rails. Harrelson's government spook makes Johansson stage, you guessed it, a fake moon landing, as a contingency in case the real one fails. She reluctantly goes along with this, unbeknownst to Tatum, as the real landing is taking place, even though she feels like she's betraying him.
This extended finale is clumsily staged, but that's not what's offensive about it. The "Fake Moon Landing" narrative is one of the quintessential paranoid American folk legends, likely arising, I've always suspected, among the many people who insisted that the moon landing was a ridiculous folly and would never succeed--arising, like so much else in our toxic national discourse, from the common American inability to admit it when we're wrong. Fly Me to the Moon means it all facetiously, of course, but this doesn't strike me as the most auspicious time in our country's history to lend even that much credence to a conspiracy theory.

Lilies and Soap
Tumblr media
"You could consume this scene through me
And assess the same majesty
But you could never know the welfare, the glee
That being in the presence of your beauty throws at me"
- "Share in the View" by Lilies and Soap. Lyrics by A. E. Bridgerton and K. K. Sharma.
"Looking good, Lamb!" Anthony whistled obnoxiously at Kate, who was leaving the hair and makeup area of the small studio.
"Come off it. They barely did anything."
"Well, doesn't that make it even more of a compliment?"
"If you were being serious, I suppose it might."
"Oh, but I am."
Kate sighed, exasperated. "Fine. Thank you. So kind of you to say." She curtsied, making Anthony laugh.
A producer walked up to them and pointed toward the camera and chairs setup. "Alright, we're ready for you. If you'll just head over there, we can get started."
Kate nudged Anthony with her shoulder as they walked over. "Nervous?"
"Nah. We've done interviews before."
"First time on camera, though." Kate fiddled with her necklace. Anthony put his hand over hers to still her fingers.
"Then just don't mind the camera, Lamb. It'll be fine."
Kate smiled up at him as a journalist approached them with an outstretched hand.
"Hi! I'm Etta, with MOJO Magazine. So nice to meet you, Anthony, Kate."
After everyone exchanged handshakes, Anthony and Kate were directed to the elevated chairs situated opposite Etta. Anthony helped Kate up into hers.
“Thank you, Tony.”
“Oh,” Etta looked down at her notes as she settled into her chair. “Do you go by ‘Tony’?”
Anthony smirked. “Not generally, no.”
“So, is Tony, like, a family nickname?”
“No, it's, uh… Well," Anthony looked over to his bandmate. "It’s a Kate nickname.”
“Aw, that’s adorable.”
Anthony shrugged. “She's adorable, aren't you, Lamb?” he teased as he tugged on Kate’s hair.
Kate batted his hand away. “Arsehole,” she muttered.
Coming soon...ish? (Hopefully, maybe, possibly.)
