The newly engaged lovers arrived back at the rental to find August still hard at work in the back room. Peachy wasted no time telling his brother the news and securing his promise to stand up at the ceremony as his Simof Honor.

August was happy for the couple, if a bit surprised at Peachy’s sudden change of heart. Just a few days ago at Paul’s wedding they’d both agreed that they weren’t planning to follow in their cousin’s footsteps anytime soon. He hoped his brother was truly ready for the big commitment he was making.

Next Peachy called his family back at the farm in Henford on Bagley, then took to social media to spread the word far and wide.

August was right that he hadn’t been ready a few days ago, but after their romantic and dramatic vacation, he found himself overflowing with excitement. He couldn’t wait to walk down the aisle and secure Jack as his partner for life.

Friends and families’ congratulations and well wishes poured in as he fried up the last of Jack’s catch for dinner. As they ate, they discussed potential wedding venues as well as August’s plans to start hunting for a job, and a place of his own, as soon as they returned home.

After dinner, the three sports fans relaxed by watching a soccer game on the small TV in the living room.

Peachy smiled to see Jack and August getting along so well. From the beginning he’d appreciated how naturally Jack fit into his social circle despite their age difference. Watching his brother and his fiancée bonding over the game was just more proof that his future with Jack was going to be bright.

When the game ended, they said goodnight and got ready for bed. As Peachy brushed his teeth he found himself daydreaming about the future.

He still hoped to convince Jack to accept some form of life extension, but knowing now that their time together might be more limited than he’d realized he felt a new urgency to get working on life goals that had until recently seemed very far in his future.

The trip had been wonderful, but he was ready to get back home, see his family, and make a new family with the man showering just a few feet away.

2. “Don’t look down.”

They hadn’t even had time to warn each other. Luckily, Andy and Nile were on a different floor as they were, so him and Nicky had been the only ones caught in the blast. 

Joe had been thrown across the room and he was just waking up. He didn’t die, but the explosion had been so devastating that he had been positively knocked out for a few minutes. 

“Nicky?” was the first word to leave his dried and chapped lips and yet it didn’t have a sound. He must’ve had swallowed quite a lot of dust and he had to come to terms with the fact that it was going to take him a few minutes and a couple of coughing fits to be able to speak clearly so that his husband could hear him.

He called his name again once the cough had calmed down and sat there in silence, trying to make out any helpful sounds. 

“Yusuf!”

Joe was on his hands and knees the moment his own name broke the quiet in the room. Standing up wasn’t a good idea, especially considering there might still be people around them waiting for them to come back. And they had guns.

“Nicky!” he called back and Nicolò replied with an annoyed grunt. That sound alone brought some reilef to Joe’s heavy heart: joking was their way of telling each other everything was fine.

It didn’t take him long to spot Nicky behind a huge shelving unit who had been clearly flung around by the same blast. From where he was, Joe could only see him up to his chest but it was enough. He moved quickly, still on all fours, and reached Nicolò, whilst allowing himself to cough some more. The dust was still settling around them and it all just looked... gray.

“My love.” he whispered when he was close enough for Nicky to hear him, but was cut off when the genoese just grabbed his wrist.

“Joe, look at my face. Don’t look down.”

The urgency in Nicky’s voice almost brought back the panic Joe had felt the first few minutes he hadn’t heard him, and he looked into the sea-tinted eyes with his own lips slightly parted, very confused but intending to obey that order. They didn’t usually boss the other one around, if not for a good reason. So Joe trusted Nicky fully.

“Are you okay?” Joe asked him, trying extremely hard to follow what his husband was telling him but also wanting desperately to look down and assess the damage.

Nicky nodded, letting go of his wrist as Joe was settling next to him, on his knees. “It’s healing. It’s only a ribcage.” he murmured. His voice and facial expression were slightly warped from pain, but he was alive and breathing and that was enough for Joe, who managed to let his lips form a hesitant smile as he bent down to press his forehead against Nicky’s, a hand cupping his face and his thumb stroking Nicky’s skin.

“Are you okay?” Nicky mirrored his question, but his words were nothing but a whisper that caressed Joe’s own skin. It was familiar, it was known, it was safe.

“I am now.” Joe answered in the same tone. “Take your time. I’ll wait here with you.”

“Andy and Nile...”

“They will be fine. I won’t leave you here.”
