"I was a great fan of Herbie Hancock’s 60’s music. Nick Maclean Quartet is very solid. « Convergence » is one of the best canadian albums of 2023 and should have chances to get a Juno."
- Denys Lelièvre, CKRL (Quebec City, Canada)
This October, the NICK MACLEAN QUARTET feat. BROWNMAN ALI celebrates the release of their hotly anticipated sophomore album CONVERGENCE. Led by fast-rising piano star NICK MACLEAN -- a 10x Global Music Award winner and one of the most in-demand young jazz piano players in Toronto -- this contemplative yet thrilling quartet delivers jazz between the two poles of thoughtful introspection and powerhouse conveyance, taking influences from Herbie Hancock's primordial 1960's Blue Note era recordings. Maclean's quartet heavily features one of Canada's most provocative improvising trumpet players -- BROWNMAN ALI -- an internationally acclaimed, multi-award winning jazz iconoclast who has been heralded as "Canada's preeminent jazz trumpet player" by New York City's Village Voice and is best known globally as the last trumpet player to play in the legendary jazz-hip-hop group GURU's JAZZMATAZZ. For this show, Ali & Maclean stand shoulder-to-shoulder with 2 of Canada's top-tier 20-somethings: CHRIS PARNIS (in for Ben Duff) on upright bass, and PETROS ANAGNOSTAKOS on drums (in for Jacob Wutzke).
Copies of CONVERGENCE will be available for purchase at the show (physical and digital)
:: Nick Maclean - piano :: Brownman Ali - trumpet :: Chris Parnis - bass (in for Ben Duff) :: Petros Anagnostakos - drums (in for Jacob Wutzke)

Today we remember the passing of Rick Danko who Died: December 10, 1999 in Marbletown, New York
Richard Clare Danko was a Canadian musician, bassist, songwriter and singer, best known as a member of The Band.
Danko was born on December 29, 1943 in Blayney, Ontario, a farming community outside the town of Simcoe, the third of four sons in a musical family of Ukrainian descent. He grew up listening to live music at family gatherings and to country music, blues and R&B on the radio. He especially liked country music, and often his mother would let him stay up late to listen to the Grand Ole Opry on the radio.
His musical influences included Hank Williams, the Carter Family and, later, Sam Cooke. He also drew inspiration from the music of his eldest brother, Junior. Danko's second-eldest brother, Dennis, was an accomplished songwriter, and his younger brother, Terry, also became a musician
He made his musical debut playing a four-string tenor banjo for his first-grade classmates, and while various sources differ slightly, all suggest he was headed to a professional career early. One report has him forming his first "Rick Danko Band" at age 12 or 13, another reference mentions that by age 14 he was putting on country & western shows with his brothers, Maurice Jr., Dennis and Terry, using various group names. It is also written that he started a band at that age with his eldest brother, Maurice Junior and a local high school teacher on drums. This trio performed country music and R & B at local dance halls, sometimes rented themselves, weddings, and other events. The group, "The Starlights", expanded to included accordion, second guitar and "a girl singer", expanded their repertoire to include polkas for newer European immigrants.
By age 17, already a five-year music veteran and having already left the Simcoe Composite School and working by day as a butcher, booked his band The Starlights as the opening act for Ronnie Hawkins
It was Danko who found the pink house on Parnassus Lane in Saugerties, New York, which became known as Big Pink. Danko, Hudson, and Manuel moved in, and Robertson lived nearby. The Band's musical sessions with Dylan took place in the basement of Big Pink, between June and October 1967, generating recordings that were officially released in 1975 as The Basement Tapes. In October, the Hawks began demo recordings for their first album, with Helm rejoining the group in that month. Their manager, Albert Grossman, secured them a recording deal with Capitol Records in late 1967.
From January to March 1968, the Band recorded their debut album, Music from Big Pink, in recording studios in New York and Los Angeles. On this album, Danko sang lead vocal on three songs: "Caledonia Mission", "Long Black Veil" and "This Wheel's on Fire."
Before the Band could promote the album by touring, Danko was severely injured in a car accident, breaking his neck and back in six places, which put him in traction for months. While he was in traction, Danko's girlfriend, Grace Seldner, informed him that she was pregnant, and he proposed from his hospital bed. When they married, Danko was still in a neck brace. Rick and Grace divorced in October 1980.
The Band finally made their concert debut at Bill Graham's Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco in April 1969. By this time, they were already hard at work on their eponymous second album. On that record, sometimes known as the Brown Album, Danko sang what would become two of his signature songs—and two of the group's best-loved classics: "When You Awake" and "Unfaithful Servant." Both songs exemplified Danko's talents as a lead singer and demonstrated his naturally plaintive voice.
Danko is featured in the documentary film Festival Express, about an all-star tour by train across Canada in 1970. On the train, he sings an impromptu version of "Ain't No More Cane" with Jerry Garcia and Janis Joplin.
In an interview published in Guitar Player, Danko cited bassists James Jamerson, Ron Carter, Edgar Willis, and Chuck Rainey as his musical influences. He eventually moved from the Fender Jazz Bass to an Ampeg fretless model and later a Gibson Ripper for The Last Waltz.
On December 10, 1999, days after the end of a brief tour of the Midwest that included two shows in the Chicago area and a final gig at the Ark in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Danko died in his sleep at his home in Marbletown, New York. The cause of death was heart failure. He was 55.
He was survived by his second wife, Elizabeth (died 2013), whom he had married in 1989; a stepson, Justin and a daughter Lisa, from his first marriage. His son Eli, from Danko's first marriage, died in 1989 at age 18 from asphyxiation after heavy drinking while studying at the State University of New York at Albany. Danko was buried next to Eli at Woodstock Cemetery, Woodstock, New York

This year, I set out to do my second international race. I went to our neighboring country of Canada to tackle the Toronto Marathon for a weekend run-girls trip on a budget. We travel, shopped, ran and conquered new records in Tonrot and had a great time! Here is your guide to traveling to Toronto and running the Toronto Marathon.
Where to Fly
I flew both American and AirCanada and honestly because AirCanda is so large, I recommend flying it. It’s much better in service, food, and cost. Additionally, the AirCanada terminals are way better than what I experienced with American Airlines, which I was returning from Toronto to the USA. The American area was depressing and barely had anything for us. Toronto’s airport is very nice, organized and clean. Additionally, they allow you free carts for your luggage and various accommodations for those traveling with families/kids. For my United States folks, this is International so I recommend having global entry or at one of the other international trusted travel programs like Nexus if you have that to avoid the customs lines. Because I have global entry it took me 90 seconds to get through customs compared to my friend Alex which was over an hour.
Where to Stay in Toronto for the Toronto Marathon
Since this right before the summer break, flights are cheap and tons of options for traveling. So your hotel won’t cost nearly as much as most races ($200-$300 a night) During my stay, I choose the Hilton hotel, which was also the host hotel. The main reason is due to the service and also centrally located to everything. The shuttle for the race also picks up outside the front of the hotel and thus you can roll out of bed easily and without much stress. You will have to pay the additional $30 bucks or so for the shuttle to make sure you do ahead of time. It’s cheaper and seems to be less of a hassle. Pricing was affordable and it’s connected to a variety of other areas within the area to walk too. I picked out a few other popular housing that many runners also recommend and close to the city.
Toronto Marriott Downtown Eaton Centre
Residence Inn Toronto Downtown
City*Stay Condos – Simcoe Street
The Rex Hotel Jazz & Blues Bar
Toronto Luxury Accommodations – University Plaza
Where to Eat & Dine In Toronto for the Toronto Marathon

Don’t forget that your dollars go a lot longer as the currency situation works to our benefit. For one American dollar is equal to .70 Canadian cents. This means you can budget very easily on everything from hotel to dining especially when splitting it between two people. If you get lost, one thing I noticed is that we consistently hit the street Queens so when in doubt, try to head on this street and you can venture to most places from or to there. While you are on Queens don’t be surprised to see fries being served everywhere. It’s a thing in Toronto.
Titos: Since this race takes place around or during Cinco De Mayo, you must have a margarita, or tequila or some chips and salsa. Go here to have it all and a band and much more.
Vegandale Brewery –Toronto’s Only All Vegan Brewery and Restaurant. This was a great pre or post race place for the race.
Donatello: We went here for our pre-carb/race meal and had a great authentic pasta.
Juice: There are several juice spots and bubble tea in the city but one popular place is Revitalize. Fresh juice was amazing there and a great variety of flavors and sizes.
Bacon Nation: When you finish a race and want to demolish all your calories, this is one place that you can indulge. Candian Comfort food is the slogan and thus it lives up to it.
Assembly: Don’t know what to eat? Go here. We went at least twice because we didn’t know what we wanted. From vegan cupcakes to the Gnocchi that Beat Bobby Flay, we ate everything we wanted while surrounded by great DJs, a nice projector displaying the latest news and sports and loads more celebration.
Toronto’s City Hall: On our way to the Mall, we ran into Oosege hall, which is a part of Toronto’s city hall. It’s a great place to quickly learn some history and a nice area to get on the streetcar.
What to Do & See In Toronto For Toronto Marathon
#gallery-0-14 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-14 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-14 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-14 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Biking: Easily grab a bike and ride around town, which is great before or after the race.
The Mall: Enough said. Everything you need and then some. Great mall within a few blocks of the hotels downtown. We shopped, ate and even had bubble tea while there.
Diverge Virtual Playground, which is awesome to do if you can plan accordingly with a group.
Sports: You have a variety of sports to pick from such as baseball, basketball and the beloved hockey. Take a day to enjoy and celebrate!
CN Tower: Completed your race and then head over to the CN Tower the following day. Take the tour and then take the picture of your medal over the entire city. You gotta do it for the gram!
Bricktown: Shop, chill and eat in this cool part of the city. This is also a great spot for local “relaxation” if you get my drift.
Chinatown & Kensington Avenue: These two places are next to each other so grab your wallets, put on your shoes and take a walk up and down these two unique towns. Don’t forget to grab your camera to stop and take tons of photos for the gram. Graffiti walls around all around these towns as they are truly town art.
Toronto Marathon Review, Tips & Recap

No matter when you go to Toronto, I highly recommend the Toronto Marathon race in May. It’s the perfect weather for anyone traveling to Toronto and the best times too. For runners, the race doesn’t have a bunch of hills and the weather is perfect conditions for marathoners. Here are a few notes about the race if you are scheduling for it.
Only two major hills but at the beginning of the race. Elevation was great for all runners especially beginners
Optional Walk Half-Marathon and plenty of time for walkers to complete
Expo open the day of the event after the race
Great weather but towards the end of the race it was a bit hot so be careful
Free massages for half and full only with 10-15 min wait.
All races start on the same date and finish at the same area
Great crowd support around the city ‘but I would note that you do run into some cars, bikes, and strollers as you run into the downtown part of the race
Great race photos that are in Canadian currency (so very cheap to purchase)
Make sure you stay hydrated and refill often. Not a lot of water stations towards the end of the race.
No fuel other than liquids so keep that in mind when training and running. I didn’t see any gels or “food.”
The race begins in a different location for half and full marathons so do not forget this. I did.
The race ends at the same place as the 5 & 10k, which means you also finish with them. This was a bit crazy at the end but it is nice to end at the same place as everyone else.

Toronto singer Chloe Watkinson transcends genres, and writes about real-life issues and her life as a woman in her home town. She’s spent her entire life surrounded by the workings of “show biz,” as the daughter of Terry Watkinson – keyboard player of legendary Canadian rock band Max Webster but she’s carved out a name for herself, becoming known for her edgy, passionate vocal delivery.
Watkinson’s new single "Stonewalling" is a slow-burning cri de couer, (cry from the heart) that plays her fiery, sultry, haunting vocals against an '80s electro-pop background with whiplash electronic beats. Lyrically, it's an ultimatum for her beloved to break down their protective barrier to reveal the true heart beneath, or else forget about it, as she and her backing singers say, "I won't be played like that." Watkinson's powerful voice is the draw here, occasionally sliding into a captivating, gritty growl, especially in the second-verse breakdown. Her emotional resonance is palpable as she rides from a whisper to a scream and back again.
Watkinson has performed, recorded and toured with bands such as Amy Louie Scholarship winners Park Eddy, who held a 10-year residency at Grossman’s Tavern, and Toronto Independent Music Award winners The Distillery – whose music was featured on the Toronto Blues Society’s Fresh Baked Blues compilation. Watkinson's accomplishments include recording with Canadian Jazz icon Jill Barber (2014’s Fool's Gold, and a performance at Massey Hall) and Terry Watkinson (1995’s Teratology and 2016’s Ask), as well as performing at festivals such as Fireworks Over Central New York, CanAm Festival (NY), the Mont Tremblant International Blues Festival (QC), the TD Toronto Jazz Festival and many more.

Picking the Mind of Free Mind Operations
Josh Wickins
I received the opportunity to sit down and talk with Taylor and Shawna of Music Business Management record label, Free Mind Operations to get the low-down on their new artist signings and upcoming Artist Showcase signee event. The Artist Showcase event will be held on November 7th from 7pm-10pm at Simcoe Blues & Jazz in Oshawa. The event will be an opportunity for all fans of music to get to know the latest artist signees, have the artists showcase their skills and songs, a Q&A with the artists, and even getting to watch the signing of their new contracts. First things first, I had to find out exactly who these four new signees were.
First up is University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) student Anne Lawrence. Anne is an R&B artist managed by Madison Smyth of Townline Management. She was signed right after her performance at the last BreakThru open mic night in October, Free Mind was that impressed with her performance. Anne has already written a Christmas song with MBM initiative Emerging Songwriters called Toxic Christmas, that will be a part of the upcoming Holiday album.
Folk/Classic Rock, Country boy duo out of Peterborough, Ontario; Ace & the Kid. Shawna of Free Mind already runs their social media and is well acquainted with the group, so it was an easy choice for her to pitch the band to the label. Managed by Will Borg, again from Townline Management. Already they have quite a following and many original songs. The duo will hit the studio within the next week to record some tracks and add to the aforementioned Holiday album.
Bringing musical diversity to Free Mind, fellow Peterborough resident and Trent University student, Rap artist, “Unlearned” has been signed extruding great excitement and anticipation. Unlearned is now being managed by Ethan and Eric of Millennial Artist Management. Free Mind’s Matt Bell, being friends with Unlearned, knew this was an artist they needed on their roster. With plans to get him in the studio in the foreseeable future to knock out a few tracks, this is an artist to watch out for.
Last but not least, Free Mind Operations is now running marketing for Burlington, Indie-Folk rocker, Dakota Mill. Managed by Matt Bell himself, Free Mind is looking to help take Dakota’s career to the next level. With a recent E.P. that came out in June 2018 and performing during this year’s Indie Music Week in Toronto, Dakota Mill is on the upward trajectory in the Toronto and Durham music scene. He and Free Mind are hoping this partnership is beneficial for both parties as his career continues to blossom.
It was really interesting to see just how excited Free Mind was when talking about all their new signings, to hear their plans to sign at least one or two more artists after the new year and continue to build a diverse and talented roster. Having the artists in their large network already made the recruiting process pretty straightforward, but they are really excited to develop and help out these artists. Free Mind Operations are continuously getting an influx of artists contacting them to get Free Mind to sign them, and it will be awesome to see who Free Mind will add next. The showcase is coming up fast, so make sure you make it down to Simcoe Blues & Jazz and check out this fantastic event and talented musicians.
You can find Free Mind Operations and more about them on all their social media.

NICK MACLEAN QUARTET feat. BROWNMAN ALI (Toronto)
FRI-JUN-02 show @ 8pm @ CONTXT 254 Lansdowne Ave, Toronto, ON M6H 3X9 $15 adv, $20 door TICKETS: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/545543724967 Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/579476820874404 Full Tour Information: www.TourNMQ.brownman.com ---- This spring, the multi-award-winning NICK MACLEAN QUARTET feat. BROWNMAN ALI embarks on their extensive, two month national tour across Canada, bringing them from their hometown of Toronto all the way to the Pacific coast and everywhere in between. Led by fast-rising piano star NICK MACLEAN -- an 8x Global Music Award winner and one of the most in-demand young jazz piano players in Toronto -- this contemplative yet thrilling quartet delivers jazz between the two poles of thoughtful introspection and powerhouse conveyance, taking influences from Herbie Hancock's primordial 1960's Blue Note era recordings. For this show, Ali & Maclean stand shoulder-to-shoulder with 2 of Canada's top-tier rhythm section players: BENNETT YOUNG on upright bass (in for Ben Duff), and JACOB WUTZKE on drums. - :: Nick Maclean - piano :: Brownman Ali - trumpet :: Bennett Young - bass :: Jacob Wutzke - drums - Come witness these four in full flight, this tour features many nights of deeply exploratory, hard-swinging modern-jazz audiences nation-wide will not want to miss. ----
