sitrus_candy: For #simarkusweek2022 Prompt: Valentine’s Day! Thank you disterra and sheyshocked for promoting the prompt list I’m really excited 😭🙌🏽 💙💙 You know when an AI downloads a bunch of specific content and makes its own thing based off of it? I thought it would be funny if Markus downloaded and reviewed a ton of romcoms before his date with Simon- that’s why he’s all fancy! He’s probably going to use the cheesiest pick up lines lol
reposted with permission. please check sitrus_candy’s instagram + twitter!

Okay I just have to say something that really bugs me about your work is that you ONLY write and draw Simarkus and Kamcon. Like seriously, can you maybe branch out a little bit?! There are other pairings out there for you to explore. You say that you like some rarepairs but you never draw them, what's up with that? Also, why don't you draw or write Josh more? I mean you mention him but that's it! Like seriously check your racism.
I was going to respond to this with more snark than what I’m about to write, but I was too busy enjoying Simarkusweek to care.😉
However, since you’ve decided to call me, a POC racist for not paying more attention to a specific POC in the game, (even though one of the people I pay the most attention to IS a POC)I’m just going to say this:
1. You’re obviously new to my work or haven't read a lot of it before, because you would otherwise know that I hardly pay attention to ANY character that doesn’t serve a purpose to my plot. Be it North, Josh, Hank, Connor, Gavin or whoever. It has been this way since the beginning and it will continue to stay this way for as long as I create content for this fandom.
2. As for my artwork--and hear me out on this because I know this may be a little hard for your tiny mind to understand-- but I draw what I WANT to draw. Simarkus is usually what I want to draw, so of course...I draw Simarkus. Because you know...no one is paying me to draw fanart for this game, I’m doing so purely for my own enjoyment.
3. Finally, I’m not obligated to create content for any other pairing if I don’t want to. I have three ships. Simarkus, Kamcon, And Kuther (Kara/Luther), all other rare-pairings I mention are purely just fun ideas that rest in the back of my mind. I don’t actively create content for it. If you have an issue with that, then that's a personal problem and feel free to unfollow me. You’re really not hurting my feelings at all. 👌😘

Not the Best Place for a Love Confession
Summary: During an interview with a reporter who has a bad habit of saying the most offensive thing possible at the moment, Markus talks about his new budding relationship with Simon and teaches the public that just because he’s the respected leader of the revolution, his partner doesn’t have to be some fainting maiden waiting for him to come home. Simon’s reaction surprises him. Second day of Simarkus Week 2022, prompt Confession.
Ship: Simon/Markus (Detroit: Become Human)
Warnings: (Slightly) Sexist Language
Tags: Fluff, Public Love Confessions, Making Out, Markus Loves Simon (Detroit: Become Human), Switch Simon (Detroit: Become Human), Switch Markus (Detroit: Become Human), Interviews, Markus Being Sassy, Secret Relationship
Wordcount: 1,781
A/N: Look, it’s my event, my rules. And when I say I’m gonna post fics for Simarkus Week a month late, then so be it (anyone can do that, btw, so if you still wanna join, go crazy). Anyway, hope you enjoy reading!
You can also read it on ao3!
Only a few things were sure to make Markus’ blood boil in rage. Injustice was one of them. Ignorance the other. But pretentious interviews with reporters who couldn’t give a damn about their cause and were only looking for a sensation happened to be high on the list, too. The people there were as bad as the gabbers at the Museum of Modern Art, if not worse.
Unfortunately, just like those cocktail parties Carl used to despise so much, these events were a necessary evil from time to time, so Markus forced himself to smile as he answered questions that were borderline offensive.
The acceptance of androids as a new living species was still quite a novelty, and most people meant no harm, just didn’t know how to communicate with them after everything that happened. That’s why he was here. To make them see that they were no different from them. If only some of the remarks didn’t feel like they were pulling his teeth out! At least the reporter, Joyce, always made an effort to correct herself when he let her know what she was saying was getting out of hand. But still...
“So... there is word on the street that someone had managed to capture the heart of the famous deviant leader! Is there any truth to it?”
Markus froze in shock. How did they know? His eyes wandered in the general direction where he assumed his friends and Simon were waiting for him to finish the interview, keeping their fingers crossed for him. Sadly, the studio lights were shining right into his eyes, so he couldn’t make out their expressions. They were probably as shocked as he was.
“This is bullshit,” North stated via their wireless connection. “Don’t reply, Markus. They are just digging for dirt. What you do with Simon in privacy is no one's business.”
Josh was next to chime in. “For once, I have to agree. They should focus on the things that matter, not this.”
Although Markus agreed with them wholeheartedly, he was still waiting for the one person who had the biggest say in this. Simon. The thing between them was still too fragile, and he didn’t want to squander it by making him uncomfortable.
“What do you think I should say, Simon? I don’t want to keep you a secret, but I won’t put you in the spotlight if you don’t wish so.”
At first, he was met with silence on the other end. Simon was obviously as torn at this as him. Then he responded, voice wavering: “I don’t think it would do us any good at this point to give any names. Maybe keep the details? Other than that, I’m fine with whatever you decide would be the best.” He went silent for a moment, before admitting: “Don’t wanna keep you a secret too.”
Markus nodded out of instinct, before turning back at the reporter. Thank god their communication was fast as a bolt of lightning, otherwise, the awkward pause might get even worse. “I hope you do realize this is a very personal question, Joyce. But yes. You could say that.”
“Oooh, lucky them, then! There’s no shortage of people who would jump at the opportunity to date someone like you.”
Were they now? He didn’t know and, honestly, he did not care. They weren’t his beautiful, radiant Simon. “I’m sure there are some fans or admirers, and I appreciate the attention,” not really, “even though I think people should focus more on what I say rather than on how I look.” He glanced down at the ground, suddenly abashed, before he picked up where he ended. “Back during the revolution, there was no time for romance. We all fought to survive. Now I found what I’ve been missing and I’m happy. It’s a tremendous success that our kind can finally experience love without having to fear the reaction of people around us.”
The crowd, mostly present androids, cheered at that. He overheard even one loud “aww” from backstage. Joyce giggled. It was a weird cacophony of sounds. One he was still getting used to, months after giving speeches. “You sound smitten with that mysterious person! I’m sure our viewers are dying to know whether it was a human or another android who rocked your world.”
That gave him pause. Simon said to keep it as ambiguous as possible. “Android. Former domestic assistant. And that’s all I will say.”
There were dozens of models that were considered domestic, both male and female. Small chance they would immediately figure out it was a PL600 with sky blue eyes and a gentle smile. And if they did? Well, people speculate all the time. They didn’t have to confirm it. Or they could. It was up to them to decide whether they would make it official, once they got more comfortable with the situation.
“Ah, I see. So you swept them off their feet and now they keep the house warm while you are here, changing the world.”
What. The. Hell.
At first, he thought – hoped – he heard her wrong. But no. She did say that. His heart picked up speed and he could feel his cheeks heating up as he fought the urge to scream: Just because I’m the leader doesn’t mean my partner has to be some submissive, meek flower who stays at home and takes care of the household!
Out of instinct, his eyes wandered to where he thought Simon stood. He could imagine his sad expression as he took the insult and said nothing, keeping it all bottled up. No way. Markus can’t let this slide.
“We are no longer slaves of our programming, Joyce,” he had to try very hard to keep his voice calm. “We can choose to be anyone we want to be now, and my partner chose to fight for our cause side by side with me ever since the beginning. Never passes a day when I wouldn’t admire their dedication, strength, and voice of reason. So stop belittling their worth just because of their past.”
The whole studio went silent. Joyce in particular looked like she wished the ground would swallow her whole. Although she had a lot of makeup on, he could see her face was getting a radiant shade of red. Good. Maybe she will think next time before she spouts something like this.
Joyce apologized in the end, but it was clear as day she was no longer comfortable. As was he. He couldn’t wait for the interview to be over. But before he could say his goodbyes and leave, who knows what possessed him that he turned at Joyce and smirk, even adding a small wink just to drive the point across. “Oh, and just so you know – it was them who ‘swept me off my feet’, not the other way around.”
If there was one thing he was sure about, it was that Joyce never gonna invite him to the studio again. And he was fine with that. What worried him more was the way Simon stayed quiet the entire ride home, eyes glossy, and lips in a thin line. He tried asking him if he was all right (after all, he realized the ending, no matter how true, could have been a step way too far), but was always brushed off with a forced smile and whispered: “At home.”
Oh, rA9. He wasn’t gonna forgive him, was he? Did he accidentally screw up the best thing that ever happened to him?
When the door of Carl’s mansion closed behind them, he opened the mouth to apologize – perhaps he could still save what was left of their relationship – but was instantly silenced by Simon cornering him against the wall, during which he knocked over the coat hanger. Markus had never seen so much fire burning in his eyes before. It was a little intimidating. Not that he would ever let himself get intimidated by others. Not anymore.
He half expected him to start yelling at him for violating their privacy (it sounded out of character for such a soft-spoken man that Simon was, but on the second thought, he would also never foresee him pushing him with so much strength his back collided with the wall). What he didn’t see coming were the wet kisses that were suddenly peppered all over his face, lips, neck. Anywhere Simon could reach.
The surprised yelp that left Markus’ lips was anything but dignified, but there was currently no space for shame left in him. Everything was overtaken by the heat Simon was radiating. Hunger.
“Did you mean it? What you said at the interview?” he asked, voice sounding strangely breathless, even though androids didn’t require oxygen to function as his teeth ghosted over the copper nape of Markus’ neck. That was all warning he got before the same teeth gently sunk into his skin, nibbling on it to draw a moan out of Markus’ lips.
Somehow, he found his legs wrapped around his slim waist, and once the fog on his mind prevented him from thinking clearly withdrawn, he worried they might end tumbling onto the ground. After all, Simon wasn’t the strongest of androids and he was built to withstand even a hit by a truck. But then he felt Simon’s arms around his waist and bottom and knew he was secure. Safe.
So much for who’s “wearing the trousers in this relationship” right now, as Joyce would elegantly put it, and Markus’ rolled his eyes at the thought.
They often switched roles, one leading the other or submitting when they felt like it (or when one needed the comfort of arms wrapped tightly around him, taking care of every need and shielding him from the outside world that still wasn’t kind to them). It suited them better than having a dynamic set in stone. Like this, both would get what they required at the moment. But Simon was usually too reserved to initiate such contact, much less like this. His complete loss of control sent Markus straight on cloud nine.
“I did,” he breathed into his golden hair. He tried his hardest to keep up, repaying Simon’s passionate touches by showering him with love and affection neither of them knew before. “Every single word. You are my world, Si. I won’t let anyone ridicule you.”
Simon responded with a groan that rumbled from the depth of his chest (Markus could feel it against his body like a purr) before he resumed the venture of his lips across the planes of his copper skin, littered with countless freckles like stars.
Well. Seems like he said the right thing after all.

Can You Deviate Twice?
Summary: Some people never wisen. Unfortunately, Simon seems to be one of them. But who knew you could deviate for love twice? First day of Simarkus Week 2022, prompt Deviation day.
Ship: Simon/Markus (Detroit: Become Human)
Warnings: Implied/Referenced Past Sexual Abuse
Tags: Fluff, Getting Together, First Kiss, Gay Simon (Detroit: Become Human), Simon (Detroit: Become Human) Backstory, Soft Markus (Detroit: Become Human), Markus Loves Simon (Detroit: Become Human), Set Before Stratford Tower, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence
Wordcount: 1,006
A/N: I've probably told you all of this before, but back when Simarkus Week started in 2020, I didn't get to participate, so hosting it now is my dream come true. You won't believe how excited I'm to see other people's contributions!
Btw, I love the popular theory that Simon deviated for love. It’s pretty interesting headcanon, although I don’t use it in most of my fics. It fit this one though, so... here we are.
You can also read it on ao3!
“And what’s your story, Simon? What led you to Jericho?” Markus asked one day, during one of their precious few moments of respite, his head slightly tilted to the side like a curious puppy. It was such an interesting contrast with his otherwise strong, leader personality it made Simon smile despite the panic that took hold of him inside.
It all started so nice and optimistic. They’ve just returned after yet another successful mission, so a small celebration was in order. But before they could even start, Markus disappeared without a trace. No one knew where he went, not even North or Josh.
Some people started to worry and wanted to go search for him, in case he ran into some trouble, but Simon calmed them down, saying he probably wanted to plan their next move somewhere in peace. He also preferred silence to this overwhelming bustle of the slowly rejuvenating Jericho, even though it was good to see it transform from a graveyard into... something else entirely. Regardless, he wasn’t concerned about something happening to their beloved leader.
It was when the growing buzz of Jericho started slowly getting to him (it was never so crowded or noisy before – all Markus’ doing, and Simon couldn’t help but admire him for uniting their people in such a short time notice), that he decided to go to his favorite spot on the roof. Most of them sometimes sought refuge under the sky away from prying eyes. But he certainly didn’t expect to find Markus there, sitting with his legs thrown over the edge, nursing a bottle of thirium.
He froze on the spot. Markus probably didn’t want to be disturbed, so he slowly turned around and started to leave, only to be stopped by Markus’ velvety voice, calling his name. When he turned back, he saw Markus waving at him to join with a small tired smile.
That’s how he found himself here, just hanging out with their admired leader, enjoying the calm and silence or swapping stories. Simon felt a small jolt of electricity run up his wires whenever their legs brushed against one another. It was ridiculous, honestly. How long was this bright, wonderful man with them? A few days at most? And he already held so much power over Jericho... and over Simon as well, probably without him even realizing it.
But then he asked that question, and the charm of the situation disappeared. Simon’s fight or flight reflex immediately started to kick in, and he gave him a tight-lipped smile, hoping that it would hide the anxiety he felt.
“It doesn’t matter anymore,” he shook his head and thought it to be over. But oh boy, how wrong he was.
“It matters to me. I won’t force you if you don’t want to tell me, of course, but I would like to get to know you. If you would only let me,” Markus replied in the most honest tone possible and was met with a surprised glance. Oh no. Simon was already feeling the telltale tickling inside his chassis as if bugs got stuck in his chest cavity during routine maintenance (no matter how ridiculous and also kind of disturbing that thought was). All he could think of was...
Not again.
“I trust you. But it’s...” He heaved a sigh and took another long sip of the thirium to calm himself down. All right. He could do this. After all, he trusted Markus with his life. “Well, the truth is that I fell in love with my owner. He was a very kind person but never felt the same way about me. When he found out, he dumped me by the docks to rot.”
Markus listened intently, and when he fell silent again, a shadow of genuine disconcertment crossed his handsome features. “Oh, Simon, that’s horrible. I’m so sorry you had to endure something like this.”
For someone as good at public speeches as he was, he really was terrible at this. One would say clumsy as a newborn foal (which made Simon question for how long was he even deviant in the first place). But for some reason, it only made Simon fall for him more.
On the spur of the moment, he gave him a soft smile and squeezed his elbow to let him know that he appreciated the thought. It was meant to be a normal touch between two close friends. Or at least look like it. Nothing more. Simon didn’t mean to let his skin recede, and for Markus’ as well, mingling their minds together for a few short moments before they both jolted away from each other, gasping and trying to take in what they just saw.
“I... those were your memories. The night when you found us, you had to drag yourself from a junkyard, after being gunned down without even being questioned.”
“I saw yours as well. That man, he used you in every way, then threw you away like you meant nothing to him. And... also the way you look at me when I’m not watching...” Markus had to blink to get rid of all the images he just witnessed, and Simon’s heart sank. He never wanted to show him this, and now he knew and would abandon him, just like Jason did. But before he could say anything to save the situation, he felt a pair of warm lips touch his. It was a fleeting, delicate meeting, but Simon dived into it like a man drowning, despite himself and all he ever promised.
When they parted, Markus still held his face in his hands, their foreheads touching, reluctant to let go. It was so tender Simon might cry. And then Markus breathed out between their lips: “For what it’s worth, I will never leave you behind, as he did.”
Simon suddenly couldn’t tell the floor from the open sky. Everything felt so... surreal and wonderful, once he silenced that voice that kept telling him that this wouldn’t last.
Was it possible to deviate twice?

Compatible Hearts: A simarkus essay
Tumblr media
Cover pic by @rumithe
This is for simarkus week day three, Compatible hearts. Thank you @sheyshocked for organizing<3
.
I'm tired of listening to people talk about Markus’ route as less than. It’s always about how incoherent everything is. I’m not trying to deny it, but I also think there’s no such thing as a perfect game, or a perfect story. It may be because I’m a fan, but to me the plot doesn’t have to be revolutionary as long as it conveys emotion.
What gets me in the sense of the game’s ‘flaws’ and if they are flaws at all, is the unfinished ‘Simon’s route’ aka. everyone’s favorite theory!. The follow-him-instead-of-North-choice that has no impact, the fact that he’s the one to give Markus his heart if she's unavailable: what does it tell us? The ship’s popularity indicates that a lot of players picked on it: Simon seems almost obviously in love with Markus, yet it isnt explicitly there. If Simon was supposed to be a romanceable character, the plan was scrapped.
.
So why? There are these two people that scramble trying to relate to each other, whose relationship is never made entirely clear, whose bond seems to blossom on the moment of the other’s death. Why is it so captivating? The writing doesn’t support them, but the incompleteness itself makes it. What we are not given emphasizes the question: is love less meaningful if it’s not explicit? Because it’s certainly present in these narrow windows of time, the liminal spaces; it is to love within few resources, in the context of death, in the eye of the storm. Are theirs not a love story in its barest of forms, never to have each other truly? I feel like the less there is the more power this ship has: it’s love persisting… And I don't think it exists only in the eye of the beholder. How could the choice to ‘follow Simon’ be meaningless when later on in the church he tells Markus “We’ll follow you”... Isn’t that all the reciprocation we craved?
.
I can’t stop thinking about how perishable they are. How many different ways Simon dies for Markus. That’s half of the most maddening thing: combined with the lack of actual romance it’s just crushing. It’s like he’s there just to die. Like he is an afterthought to his creators.
You’ve probably heard this Iliad quote before: “Gods envy us. They envy us because we’re mortal, because any moment may be our last.” In their case it has double the weight because in principle, androids are immortal. They just chose to give it away by deviating. Connor-60 asks the question: “Why did you have to wake up, when all you had to do was obey?” Why did they? When Markus converts androids, they don’t hesitate to take the offer. Why would they risk everything in seconds?
Besides the awareness of themselves as a person, I think half the appeal is in the meaning of it. Not even in the wilderness life is all about self-preservation and completing tasks: you know, like bears like to sit down and enjoy the view! It’s the ability to see beauty and acknowledge it: to care for someone and be cared for in return: to have meaningful experiences and after the fact, appreciate your memories. All tales of immortality revolve around the person’s memories, filtered through “I don’t want this feeling to end”. Our experiences make us who we are: we’re constructed from our emotional reactions to rejection, connection, longing, love.
The pursuit of these experiences, to feel something meaningful, is at the core of being a human and what I think drove us to create androids in DBH; to continue the pursuit of it, or to give it to someone else. Just think about homecare androids! In Liminality I wrote: “What he’d been built for and what he wanted was the same. He was made to love the same.” about Simon, and that's what I feel like the affinity of deviants is: they’re us.
Our hearts are compatible.
.
To have all that in a course of a single gameplay was beyond amazing to me. I wish I could see it again for the first time. I saw all of their loyal honesty, the raw, modest, quiet love. They have something deeper than a companionship. It was devotion.
And the most appealing thing about it is never what you'd expect it to be -they fall in love and live -but what it is, and that's a struggle. Simarkus is an illusion of player's control, a half-collapsed route, the ruins of a linear romance… It's a struggle to understand and stay alive, the struggle of which makes it, that defines it… It’s the delicate fragility of their togetherness -they don’t get to say “I love you” and walk away. There are vanishingly few endings in which they do.
To me, the most beautiful route is: Markus meets Simon, loses him, Simon returns to him, he gives him his heart. And intended or not, despite what it came to be or did not, all of it between them seems inherently romantic, the promise to at least be with you until the end, the thing most of us crave innately.
.
Even if he wasn’t given the chance to show it, it’s there in all of his deaths. Even if he does it all for just one person: he risks himself to be known by him and us the same. And so, we see Simon die over and over again because it has an impact on us. The reaction is human, and that is the beauty of story-driven games even if they are not revolutionary: and it’s the same beauty in every piece of art.
.
Maybe I'm just cheering for the underdog, relentlessly searching for beauty in the little things. Even so, I wouldn't change my experience for anything; I love simarkus<3 And if you read this far I assume you do too. <3 Cheers for us!
Ps. If you vibed with this, read Liminality <3
