De Kelders Coastline â WhereToStay
De Kelders is a nearby fishing village in Walker Bay Nature Reserve. Itâs one of the Overbergâs best places for whale watching and is almost too gorgeous for words! Iâve visited De Kelders previously but wanted to return and spend more relaxed time there. Somehow, the seaside village escaped the chaos of tourism and remains a quiet, peaceful place known for fresh seafood. This post uses media shots, as during this long trip, Iâve become photography weary.

Caves and Beaches
The De Kelders (Dutch for âthe cellarsâ) coast has âdistinctive geological features in the form of a series of underground caves beneath its cliffsâ. The caves contain stalactites and stalagmites and âcrystal-clear pools of water perfect for swimmingâ.

Further up the coast, some of the oldest remains of modern man were found in Klipgat Cave. When the coastline was still kilometers away, the area was home to Middle Stone Age People and the Khoikhoi. Stretching between Hermanus and Stanford, white-sand beaches like Die Platt, Franskraal, and Stanfords Bay cover over ten miles of extraordinary coast surrounded by lowland coastal fynbos (strandveld) and sand dunes.

Cape Whale Coast Danger Point Lighthouse
Danger Point
Danger Point is a peninsula on the southern point of Walker Bay made dramatic and dangerous by the âreefs and rocks under its surfaceâ. Today, the point is embellished by a 60 ft. octagonal lighthouse with ârevolving electrical light emitting three flashes every 40 secondsâ. The lighthouse âserves as a powerful warning and commemoration to the thousands of lives claimed by this stretch of sea over the centuriesâ. The light can be seen for approximately 25 sea miles.

The lighthouse was built in 1894, â44 years after the legendary British ship HMS Birkenhead met her doom on a rock just off Danger Pointâ. The âwomen and children first protocolâ was first applied on the Birkenhead shipwreck. An estimated 193 of the 643 passengers on board survived, including 7 women and 13 children.

Fauna
De Kelders is fantastic for bird watchers! There are over 300 species in the area including the threatened Blue Crane (South Africaâs national bird), Black Harrier, Cape Vulture, and Agulhas Long-Billed Lark.

Bontebok, leopard, clawless otter, fox, bushbuck, duiker, grysbok, steenbok, and the African wildcat are some of the mammals living in the area. Buffalo and hippo became extinct in the Overberg long ago but are said to have returned to certain areas â Iâve never seen them. Amphibians and reptiles living near the fynbos and dunes include the ghost frog, Cape Cobra, and Spotted Skaapsteker.

Activities
Outdoor activities include rock climbing, beach and trail jogging, and exploring coastal tide pools rich with sea life. Sheltered Stanfords Bay has Milkwood thickets (groot bos) and cliffs that make it a popular, safe place for swimming, snorkeling, fishing, and picnicking. There are several hiking trails, including a beautiful coastal trail from Gansbaai Harbour that passes rock pools, caves, and limestone fynbos. As the weather gets warmer and days longer, itâs a hike on my list.

There are many things to see and do in the Overberg â a place of incredible natural beauty! One exciting activity I hope to experience is viewing the area like a bird while tandem paragliding. Paragliding is very popular in South Africa and coastline and mountain vistas make Hermanus an exceptional area for it!

If you want Womenâs Football to get bigger and for...
I hear/agree with you. Soccer and tennis are two of the few sports where the rules are the same for men and women, making it exciting for all to watch. Neither is a âwatered down.â It sucks that the masses (dudes) donât see this and support it. Consequently, it looks (and it IS) another facet of inequality. Also, girls donât cry when they play. đ
Oof... Idk, I saw Julie Johnston cry when she gave away that penalty vs Germany and thought she was going to get a red card ;) hahaha... Itâs funny me and my friends were talking about how womenâs tennis and soccer are the only ones that get any attention and are the most popular ones, maybe thatâs why! It does have to do with sexism, but not in the way most people think. As corrupt as FIFA is, and trust me they are an extremely corrupt organization, they pay them a small amount of money relative to the large chunk they pocket. Likewise with the men, Germany got paid 35 million for winning, while FIFA made billions probably lol. And thatâs not counting the fact that most of the money they win, doesnât even go to the players it goes to their respective federation. Basically, the federations get to decide how much the players get paid or not. Something I donât think most people even know about, but thatâs a whole other story... But most of the does sexism comes from Football fans who refuse to watch the women. This is from all the other countries that participated. How many people really watched Japan vs England in the semi-final, even the stadium wasnât full to capacity and that was aired on Fox too. Sure a lot of people watched the final, but thatâs just one game and those numbers were unprecedented, if you watched the whole tournament (which most people didnât) most of the time the stadiums werenât even half empty. Kind of unfair to judge them on viewership for the tournament as a whole because they were competing with the Copa America for the whole tournament, except for the final. Anyways idk what Iâm trying to get at here I think I just went on a long tangent that doesnât make any sense at all. TL;DR There isnât enough money in the womenâs game to pay them as much as the men get paid, simple as that.Â
ALSO Go USA today! Vs Honduras lol
