Murder Time
by SilverEnderwolf
The announcement came with hardly any warning. “Attention students and faculty. As I’m certain some of you are aware, that time of the year has arrived. Murder Time will begin at midnight and all students should be in their dorms by no later than 10pm in order to give the staff time to deliver their knives. Now I’m sure many of you already know how this works, but for the sake of our freshmen, I’m gonna explain the rules…"
Time seemed to freeze, students stopped whatever they were doing and exchanged shifty-eyed glances with each other, freshmen looked confused as the rules were explained, seniors cracked their knuckles and sneered at underclassmen, already forming battle plans.
Murder Time had begun.

Her Royal Highness, Princess Lidya Amalia Silverende
For my first post I figured I might as welL post a piece of art I did that started as a doodle but ended up becoming my full-on first attempt at a gryphon, and then ended up becoming art of one of my original characters from my project, The Aetherian Crown Saga. sdlfjh

Audio Notes - Group Critique Review of my Archive
Carina Ioannou - CI
Chris Matthews - CM
Ruschele Smith - RS
Adam Fisher - AF
Jess Royce - JR
Rebecca Hart - RH
Danielle Bather - DB
Netanya Smith - NS
Hannah Baker - HB
Hayden O’Bryan - HO
Georgina Law - GL
CI - This is my archive of images that I shot recently. They inlaced the night shots that were taken on the A12 from London to Colchester. Most are long exposure but some are taken normally like the road signs for example. However most of the A12 is quite dark in places but I prefer the light trails. I wanted to experiment with light trails, long exposure and the speed of light and this is a selection of them. It is part of the project that I am doing “5 miles from California”
CM - Can you explain that to the group.
CI - The A12 is not only an integral part of East Anglia it is also one of the main roads that feeds east Anglia transport, commenting, living, working, lorry drivers off to Felixstowe and Harwich etc… It is important to me because I have family in London so I find myself using the A12 a lot taking many journeys. But I have never travelled further than Ipswich. I was looking at the history of the A12 and there are lots of back stories. I’m also interested in all the little junctions that come off the A12. One of them being Silverend as mentioned by Matt Bowman in one of our seminars. I will look into Silvered but my min theme will be me taking a whole car journey from the beginning, which is in Poplar, to Great Yarmouth. Just 5 miles from the end of the A12 is a seaside town called California which is how I came up with my title for the project. It seems so fitting.
CM - It’s kind of like Paris, Texas or something. One of those ambiguous names.
CI - Yes. You would expect paradise with a name like California…
CM - The other irony is that you’re going east rather than west. Going west is towards California in terms of the settlers and the direction but you’re actually going east which is also interesting.
CI - California, Norfolk is completely the opposite of what you’d expect from California, USA. I’ve never been to California, USA…
CM - Do you know where the word California comes from? Is it an English place name that was transferred to America?
NS - It’s like Perth in Australia and Perth in Scotland. I think there are a lot of places like that.
CM - Yes there are a lot of place name transfers from the old world and the new world which is very interesting.
CI - I haven't looked into the name yet but that will be part of my ongoing research. I am also looking at other photographers like William Eggleston and Edward Ruscha.
I have another list of photographers that other people have suggested in my Facebook photography page. Moving on the shots here are from the other night. I like the car lights and street lights but they quite abstracted.
CM - Have any of you done any long exposures whilst travelling at night?
NS - Yes I have tried it…inaudible…Carina what was the context of these images?
CM - So the idea was that we would create an archive of images of something that interested us. One of the interesting things in a curator role for example is that you end up with an array of imagery and then how do you then deconstruct it and turn it into something else? And I’m just interested in terms of looking at an array of imagery that you then start to rework, reform with other artists work in terms of your own experiences and turn it into another piece of work. That’s what I’m interested in and that’s why it has been set. I’m going to zip my lips for a minute and ask if any others have a response to it apart from the effects in terms of how you could edit, extend what the photographs could mean and how they could work with other types of media in terms of the idea of travel?
CI - I was just about to say that I also have other shots that are taken from the daytime. They look complete;y different as they have another mood and feeling to them. I don't have them with me. There are a lot of different locations that I know from my little stretch of the A12 that I am familiar with. There’s a diner, some petrol stations that are dated. But I also wanted to photograph things like roadkill…
CM - The Empire diner is a bit of Americana stuck on the side of the A12…It’s not far from the Silvered turnoff.
CI - In my tutorial with Barbara she mentioned a swimming pool showroom that is just before Ipswich. That again could be…
CM - The idea of going to California…
CI - There are a lot of stops along the way that I want to explore.
NS - Silvered might be of interest to you as it doesn't look English. It looks quite odd.
CI - Anything about the other photographs folks? Imagine what you have here is clay and you have to shape it in some way to inform and other things about road travel. It is easy to get an effect but how do you turn raw ingredients into something interesting?
RS - Are you going to be focusing on the road itself or the places in-between?
CI - A bit of both. I want to do a journey. If I’m focusing the journey on the road then I’d like to do shots through the dashboard like I have been through the day and night shots here. In amongst that I want to build on the narrative by taking images of roadkill, housing and diners etc..
RS - Do you reckon you might do some film stills?
CI - Yes possibly. The film stills from my last project gave the series a whole new perspective so for this project it would add a cinematic feel to it.
RS - Are you doing it from the perspective of the driver or the passenger?
CI - I have to be careful. If I am going on my own then I would need to set up a rig in the car and use a remote.
RS - If you do stills you can film the entire journey and grab some stills along the way.
CI - That would be a great idea. The shots through the windscreen are still a nice aspect as the windscreen frames it. If I set up the camera so that it is behind the driver or passenger you can create the perspective that the viewer is actually in the car and they begin to mimic the driver or passenger as if they are taking the same journey.
HB - If you shoot from the passenger seat you will get full perspective.
CM - That’s a really good idea. I think I would mix them up. When I look at the night shots I have a lot of associations as to where I have seen that kind of imagery before. What do you think?
NS - Music videos.
CM - They're moving and long exposures, sifting and changing and things like that and somehow you've got to think about how to edit them and think how they would go with other situations and ideas about danger and moving. The ideas about freeways in America. Or Highways. It may just be about abstraction. Are there any other images you can comment on group?
HB - I really like this now as it is very abstract, light and floaty with the lights.
CI - All of those are straight street line lights and this one is wiggly.
NS - The ones I find most interesting are the very dark images were you have a small amount of information whereby you can just make out the road sign. You could play around with it and film stills.
CI - There’s a music video that I’m reminded of with the dark street and all you can see is someones feet that a re just about lit by the car lights.
NS - It’s quite cinematic isn't it?
CM - You’ve been to the hillmans show and love seen the idea of mixing real and abstract. You could mix speed with something that’s static. It is difficult to get out of the cliche of a music video and find something thats your own. The signs are very interesting. Who would you look at or recommend Carina should research?
NS - Artists… There is the obvious like to semiotics in terms of signifiers.
CM - Signs are going to be interesting in terms of the project. I am thinking of Dan Holzworth and Autopia series where he photographed slip roads and looked at highways and looked at how they were structured and how they functioned. Also look at Chris Petit who is a British film maker that made a film about the London orbital. I would even look at Paul Graham who uses sequencing a lot such as his bleached out series and his A1 project.
NS - Look at Patrick Hogan. He would passively photograph and you could play with editing by adding opacity and layering. You could add another dimension with it.
CI - I want to play around with the temperature of the images but then mate the yellow hue is resonant of the street lights…I don't want it to stray too far from them
CM - I would also chop them up and play with there size, crop and sequencing. The thing with an archive is that you can start to put them into categories. Visually or conceptually linked…But definitely play around with it. Thanks Carina.

Welcome to Relevance
by SilverEnderwolf
There was this pretty cool writing prompt on Tumblr. The gist is that people have a number based in their Relevance to someone's life, and Sock's parents had been the highest ever, until he meets someone who's Relevance is way higher. I wrote this one shot for that prompt.
