Part Thirteen: Endings & Beginnings

“Thanks for telling, nurse Goodwill.”

“My condolences, Silkshine.”

“Thanks again.” Slowly Silkshine closed the front door of her inn. She picked up the lantern and walked downstairs. The lantern cast a ghastly light, repelling the draping darkness of the night.

Her hooves felt like lead and her head was murky. She stepped into the basement, where all the miners that lived in the inn resided. The lantern was turned down before she entered one of the bedrooms. She did not want to wake all the sleepers, just one.

Carefully she opened the door and walked in, vigilant on any possible creak from the wood. Hard to do when you have hooves, but her time as a model was useful at times like these. Also good for maintaining a pokerface when you want to burst into tears. Lying in the lower bunkbed in the middle of the room, was a red pegasus. Either fast asleep from all the events of the previous day or having barely fallen asleep.

“Lofty,” she said softly,nudging the pegasus. He didn’t respond. “Lofty,” she said again. This time he started to move but stopped. Silkshine nudged him more, whispering his name. At last he drowsily opened his eyes, sitting upright in bed.

“Silkshine?” He mumbled.

Tears rolled down her cheeks. “Fairy Light has passed away.”

The following days a couple of things happened, but those things were the center of attention. In the day of the night that Fairy died, her parents arrived. Silkshine was already at the register desk, thinking about how to say those words, when the parents came in. A minute later you could hear the crying. They came to visit, but now are in for a funeral.

Fairy was buried in Rocky Slopes. As sudden her demise was, so concise was her funeral. There were few speakers, her parents and several friends. The procession lead from the funeral home to  the graveyard, located several kilometers from the town. It was a lovely grass field, with soft earth, unlike the rock-littered ground of the town. There were several rows of gravestones already, most of them belonging to mineworkers. The mountain offered little variety in flowers, yet a bouquet was made that fitted Fairy. It was sent, along with the coffin and a final word into earth.

It was only the day after that Lofty found out Fairy’s parents had learned their daughter had been keeping secrets. He had been called to Worldbound, the mining company of Rocky Slopes. Upon arriving, he met Written Word, the formal-looking pony that previously visited Fairy Light. He was the lawyer of Worldbound but is also occasionally upon the citizenry of Rocky Slopes, as the company and the town are almost one and the same. Once entering the office he noticed Fairy’s parents were also present. Upon introductions Lofty learned their names were Auric Aura and Radiant Glow. It was bizarre, and hard to describe, but it almost seemed like the couple had to take effort in acknowledging his existence.

“When Miss Light collapsed earlier this week, she asked for my presence to write her Last will and Testament. Both myself and nurse Goodwill have been present and acted as witnesses during the writing of Miss Light’s will and testament,” Written Word said dryly.

Lofty felt a pang of heartache as he thought back to that day. Fairy must have realized she had not long to live.

“We will now read the Last Will and Testament of the deceased and the distribution of assets belonging thereto. With your permission, I will now commence,” Written Word continued.

Both Auric Aura and Radiant Glow gave a nod.

“I, Fairy Light, being of sound mind and disposing mind, memory and understanding, do hereby make, publish and declare this document to be my Last Will and Testament and hereby revoke any and all Wills and codicils before made by me.

First: I declare that I am a resident of Rocky Slopes, Equestria; that I am unmarried and have no children.

Second: I direct the payment of all debts and expenses resulting of my illness to be paid of my estate in such amount as my Personal Representative may deem proper and without regard to  any limitation in the applicable law or rule of court as to the amount of such expenses and without the necessity of court approval.”

The nervousness that Lofty entered the office with slowly ebbed away.

“Third: I bequeath my father, Radiant Glow and my mother, Auric Aura my possessions in and around my home to share and share alike; provided, however, further that in the event either of them should predecease me, then and in such event, the devise and bequest shall go to the other.”

Aura looked stupefied, while Radiant glared to Lofty, who swallowed in response while Written Word continued.

“Fourth: In the event that Lofty Dreams desires to discontinue his journey across Equestria in order to settle in Rocky Slopes, I bequeath to him my house and all possessions remaining after those mentioned in Article Three(3) took their claim. If he refuses, then my house will go to those mentioned in Article Three(3).”

The gears in his head grinded against each other, broke into pieces and launched in all directions as what constituted as his mental processing came to a halt. The office ceased to possess sound for a single second.

“You?!” shrieked Auric Aura. “Why does a nopony like you get the house? We are her parents! We deserve it!”

“What in Equestria have you done to our daughter to twist her mind into giving you the house!?” Radiant hollered.

Lofty was stunned. The remaining gears in his head were working again. He grasped that he had gotten something huge, but there was this loud unavoidable obstacle standing before it. So he answered honestly. “I helped her delivering the mail.”

“So it was you who forced her into that occupation!” Declared Radiant.

Some of Lofty’s gears floated back into place. “No, that was you two.” Auric Aura opened her mouth to give a rebuttal but Lofty continued swiftly. “Because you two forced her first into something she did not want, which she kept doing for the sole sake of pleasing her parents. She came here for a job as a nurse, but found it already taken. So she took the job as mailmare while lying about being a nurse. This very desire to please her parents, to get some love and acknowledgement from you two even when the disease started killing her, that is all on you!”

Lofty breathed in deeply, all his gears were back into place. “You two have murdered my friend AND your daughter!”

The room became quiet once more. Lofty exhaled.

He turned to the notary. “Mr. Word?”

“...Yes?”

“I accept the house.” he said with a smile.

“Ah… Ah! Okay, that wraps things up. We will need to transfer the ownership to you, but that can be done later this week. Is that alright with you Mr. Dreams?

“That’s fine with me.”

Radiant Glow stood up, stomping to the door. “Let us leave this place, Aura. We don’t need to visit a rickety old shack anyway.”

“You might not need to, but I would like to, even if for just a moment,” she responded.

Radiant Glow looked to his wife, confused as she walked out the door. Emerging from his stupor, he quickly followed.

Lofty went as well, saying goodbye to Written Word, before he walked out the office.

His stomach felt like a fizzy drink, with the bubbles floating up to his brain where they popped into a yellow mist. At least it felt yellow, if anypony would have asked him. It was weird to describe a feeling with a color, but it made sense to him. After all, while he was sure his mind was not down on the ground for awhile, he had just been given a house.

A house made of wood and brick, not especially large, but it had a ground floor, a first floor and a basement, more than enough for a single pony. And if Fairy’s mother wouldn’t empty it, it would come with furniture as well.

Slowly faded the murk of memories away as Lofty flipped a page of the photobook. It was over an hour since he sat down to flip through it. One of the last things in there was the funeral card he had put in there himself together with the picture of himself, Silkshine and Fairy in front of the house. In the end, Auric Aura took only a photo of Fairy from her house, nothing more.

Here he sat years later in the same house, enjoying it when not busy flying around with the mail or anything else. He changed a few things around to make it more ‘Lofty’, but the larger stuff remained the same. In enjoyment of the memories, he took a sip of tea only to realize it has been an hour since he touched that cup.

“Blegh, it has gone cold!”
