"Wow, I feel like shit because I predictably stayed up too late the night before going back to work," they said this morning. "I'll go to bed early tonight," they said this evening, not believing a word of it.
anyway, it's 2:19 and all I want to do is survival/chore sim
Steam has noted that I have played another 18 hours of Medieval Dynasty since my "Not Recommended" review, and asked me if I wished to revise it. :P The answer is no; I don't give "Recommended" reviews to games that are only really for a very tiny sliver of one of my gaming niches, even if I do actually have a lot of fun with them. Do I like this game? Yes, especially after I looked up a video tutorial for villager management, which is basically required; WOW the game does not tell you how any of that shit works... Would I rec it to anyone who has not played at least two Stardewlikes, and/or Valheim, and enjoyed those games immensely? No.
(Exception: if you tried Valheim and generally liked it a lot but got frustrated with the corpse runs, probably you will like this game.)
Would I rec it to Crusader Kings fans? Well, generally no, but if you also like don'tstarvelikes (yes I WILL keep coining these genre monikers) then sure. Because it is nothing at the fuck all like CK.
Anyway, it's a stupidly tedious town (not city)-builder sim with survival elements that seem brutal until the first time you die and find out you can respawn with all your inventory intact. I am a masochist who kind of perversely enjoys the memory of the 3+-hour repeated attempts to recover my corpse's inventory in Valheim on multiple occasions (what can I say, there's really nothing like doing your sixth naked viking corpse run in the plains and praying that you saved enough stamina to outrun the deathsquitos who will inevitably come for your ass. It feels epic?), but given the prevalence of quests in MD and how much of a pain in the fucking ass it is to acquire resources in the early game, I prefer the respawn mechanic.
Go for the Woodcutter's Hut (or whatever exactly it's called) basically first for villager-assignable buildings. They can make logs so much more efficiently than you can.
Also please only cut down maple trees unless you're in a very tight spot; they give you twice the logs of birch or spruce, no need to waste tool durability on the others.

i would absolutely love a podcast rec based on my username :)
Your username always makes me think of Long Story Short Productions, but in your order it's gotta be:
Tumblr media
Unseen
Urban Fantasy • Anthology • Supernatural
Stories from a world much like our own, from humans and fantastical beings on the other side of The Call, a mysterious force that prevents most humans from knowing, comprehending the magical world that exists interwoven and alongside it. From the shop clerk of a magic store, to a fae conman in a magical speakeasy, to a harpy dandy trying to avoid his engagement, these are all well written, made, and voiced and highly enjoyable.

very important question have you watched arcane 🎤🎤🎤
can i be so open and vulnerable real quick T-T
i slogged through the first season of arcane when it first came out and T-T T-T never before has a show been so depressing, needlessly cruel, and worst of all, uninteresting. if a scene did not have ekko or both silico and jinx in it, then it was a scene i simply Was Not Having a Good Time for. the lesbians were pretty bland, the fight scenes felt either uninspired or unfun, and i have no desire to revisit the cartoon made for people who liked game of thrones. i am sorry that my taste is bad and i find the power of friendship to be a compelling theme but i am not getting it up for the sad league of legends show. not again.

Scientists Working on Merging AI With Human Brain Cells
Assuming Control
A team of researchers just got a $600,000 grant from Australia's Office of National Intelligence to study ways of merging human brain cells with artificial intelligence.
In collaboration with Melbourne-based startup Cortical Labs, the team has already successfully demonstrated how a cluster of roughly 800,000 brain cells in a Petri dish is capable of playing a game of "Pong."
The basic idea is to merge biology with AI, something that could forge new frontiers for machine learning tech for self-driving cars, autonomous drones, or delivery robots — or at least that's what the government is hoping to accomplish with its investment.
In Silico
And the researchers aren't shying away from making some bold claims about their work.
"This new technology capability in the future may eventually surpass the performance of existing, purely silicon-based hardware," said Adeel Razi, team lead and associate profess at Monarch University, in a statement.
"The outcomes of such research would have significant implications across multiple fields such as, but not limited to, planning, robotics, advanced automation, brain-machine interfaces, and drug discovery, giving Australia a significant strategic advantage," he added.
According to Razi, the tech could allow a machine intelligence to "learn throughout its lifetime" like human brain cells, allowing it to learn new skills without losing old ones, as well as applying existing knowledge to new tasks.
Razi and his colleagues are aiming to grow brain cells in a lab dish called the DishBrain system to investigate this process of "continual lifelong learning."
It's a highly ambitious project that will likely take quite some time to complete.
"We will be using this grant to develop better AI machines that replicate the learning capacity of these biological neural networks," Razi said. "This will help us scale up the hardware and methods capacity to the point where they become a viable replacement for in silico computing."

What You Need to Know About GPU-Accelerated Workstations
Tumblr media
Designing workstations should stay aware of new equipment and programming advancements that are becoming crucial for PC helped plan (computer aided design) and PC supported designing (CAE) experts. Large numbers of these arising advances wouldn't be imaginable without the register power conveyed by illustrations handling units (GPUs).These GPU-helped innovations incorporate high goal 4K showcases, expanded and augmented reality (AR/VR), photorealistic delivering direct from computer aided design records, man-made brainpower (artificial intelligence) includes that convey already unfathomable help to engineers, intuitive CAE utilized forthright in the plan cycle, and generative plan (transformative algorithms).Choosing the right GPU can futureproof your designing workstation over the normal lifecycle of proprietorship, permitting you to increment efficiency, support item development, and embrace arising advancements with negligible disturbance.
Why GPUs Matter to Engineers
GPUs are driving in-silico reproduction and plan approval, which is progressively dislodging the requirement for tedious and exorbitant actual models. This can bring about decreased costs and abbreviated plan cycles while conveying prevalent items.
Strong GPUs are expected for item planners utilizing AR, VR, or blended reality (MR) to lead configuration surveys or assess ergonomics.
GPUs will keep on assuming a major part in supporting remote endlessly telecommute, which will proceed with even after the pandemic decreases. Reevaluating 3D plan work processes to be adaptable, extensible, and efficiency helping will require new GPU-controlled programming advances. The requirement for progressing remote work with geologically scattered groups requires expanding GPU use for video conferencing devices like Zoom or Microsoft Groups the entire way to industry driving instruments for computer aided design, CAE, and 3D plan visualization.GPUs can address time-to-showcase challenges by empowering strong innovations like delivering, intelligent CAE, and generative plan. These GPU-based advances help designing experts in investigating new assembling strategies to create imaginative plans with energizing new highlights.
Capabilities of Modern GPUs
Current GPUs should be essential for a versatile sped up figuring foundation fit for dealing with each responsibility — whether dealing with server farm computer based intelligence, edge man-made intelligence, huge information examination, information science reenactments, or expert perception of all kinds. The best contemporary GPUs convey constant beam following, which supports proficient representation, movement, and club or customer gaming. GPUs with specific equipment for AI calculations can utilize artificial intelligence to quickly denoise renders, give predominant enemy of associating, or convey novel elements that can't be accomplished without simulated intelligence. These elements engage designing experts by changing their GPUs from a framework part to a functioning assistant. For case, six workstation illustrations cards inside the NVIDIA RTX line (the A6000, A5500, A5000, A4500, A4000 and A2000 12GB) can convey constant photorealistic beam following with their specific RT Centers. These cards likewise highlight Tensor Centers for man-made intelligence speed increase and loads of cutting edge GDDR6 ECC memory to guarantee the GPU has better admittance to the information it needs.
Basic Building Blocks that Every Engineering Workstation Needs
The following features are basic building blocks that every engineering workstation needs:
Access to massively parallel processing power.
High-performance networking for remote work, design reviews, and large models or designs.
High-capacity, high-performance storage, with a RAID implementation for backing-up critical design data.
The Essential Business Metrics of Engineering Workstations
It is important to consider the following business metrics when selecting an engineering workstation:
Cost of possession: Does it give areas of strength for an on venture (return on initial capital investment) and unsurprising future expenses? Adaptability: Does it uphold fa assortment of figure, illustrations, and simulated intelligence concentrated jobs? Biological system joining: does it incorporate principles based hardware and driving programming that completely takes advantage of the capacities of GPUs? Versatility: Is it simple to overhaul and effectively adaptable (for example with GPU memory pooling) with the capacity to incorporate into complex work processes? Efficiency: Does it offer liquid, intuitive execution that empowers imagination and permits extra or new plan prospects to be completely investigated? Imagination: Does it have the exhibition to "move" of the innovative strategy and permit clients to plan or reproduce various methodologies in-silico before actual models are created? return for capital invested of scaling: Could it at any point uphold GPU responsibility data transmission prerequisites yet in addition scale out in a layered stockpiling framework? Many designing apparatuses now require extra handling execution and capacities that main GPUs can give. The right GPU futureproofs designing workstations by allowing them to oblige developing and continuous designing patterns.

If you read Recorded Oral Traditions they almost never describe the landscape or what would populate it. The Forest is the Forest. And traditional knowledge of the animals and plants would be the purview of designated respected members of society. Figured this out while trying to write a character from a hunter-gatherer culture, and looking at how they used words.
Describing the Natural World isn’t part of the DNA of storytelling, so to speak. It’s also not a natural part of everyday language. I call it the Every Shape of Leaf problem.
first noticed it in Warriors (yes, the cat series), the forest has Boulders, Bushes, and Trees, with a grass and dirt ground. Very little fallen branches, leaf litter is the exception rather than the norm, and there’s no process of decay. It’s inert and that’s pretty much the norm in fiction. Guardians of Gahool and Silverwing were owl and bat-centric, taught me about nest snakes and the word hibernaculum. Redwall is just animals in clothes, their interaction with nature is very anthropocentric. Xenofiction might not be the answer.
Jeff VanderMeer specializes in this hyper-biophilic prose. Check out Annihilation and his short form stuff. And I thought Swamplandia! by Karen Russel a bore but it’s also very biophilic in its descriptions. You know where Natural Obstacles are most common? War nonfiction. Bruce Catton and Shelby Foote totally changed my perspective on how to write the basic conflict of Character vs Nature/Setting. Very reminiscent of JRR Tolkien, which makes sense as his writing would be informed by his wartime experience. Characters are Traveling from Place to Place, you see it all the time in fantasy.
I’ll argue video games, go-to icon of people sitting in dark rooms dead to the world, are the art form best at inuring a connection with nature. The Breath of the Wild, Red Dead Redemption, Ghost of Tsushima, the Horizon franchise, Witcher 3, No Man’s Sky, Terraria, Monster Hunter, Elden Ring, Shadow of the Colossus, Minecraft. Just as we’ve begun to feel the real impact of industrialization in the Anthropocene and become an urban species, here comes a new art form that makes natural spaces accessible in silico. It’s a very elegant hypothesis. I know you @headspace-hotel had talked about minecraft as ecosystem before.
Now we just have to communicate that with gamers.
Are Animals Becoming Extinct in Fantasy Novels?
Tumblr media
Recently, I read this post titled “Animals have been taken off in novels since 1835. Is fiction undergoing its own extinction event?” which talks about a study that found that since 1835, the use of wild animals in fiction has dropped drastically.
Many are blaming this “slow extinction” on modern societies disconnect to nature. After all, not everyone spends their days outside, so they might not notice mice, birds, or even the insects at their feet. If they do not think about animals in their daily life, why would they think about them while writing?
That is the theory, at least.
It is worthwhile pointing out what several other writers and readers are; there are plenty of animals in children’s fiction. That is true, but what about young adult to adult fantasy? Since that is what I personally write, that is what I wanted to talk about.
Just going off what books I think of first, it seems like often in fantasy novels, the only prey animals (like deer, squirrels, or rabbits) that we see are after nearly always during or after they are hunted. Then there is the complete lack of mosquitos, leaches, biting ants, and other annoying creatures.
Sometimes, there is a mention of the sound of birds singing, but rarely ever are there any details of the birds or what they are doing. Where are the ducks and swans on the lakes? Where are the birds building nests?
Now you may be going “What is the point? Why should I care?” and I get that, but by eliminating these creatures, your novels could be losing a sense of realism.
For example, in Stephen Kings The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon — which I argue is a light fantasy story, not a horror story — has a girl is lost in the woods and stalked by a creature. Interestingly, even most survival books fail to mention animals apart from for food, but Stephen King did not do that. He had deer, water bugs skittering across ponds, and even wasps that attack the main character. This added a sense of reality to the novel. It was not just a forest with some trees and plants, it was a forest filled with life, and that can be dangerous for anyone, let alone a young girl.
So, go ahead, raise the mood with your characters. If they are miserable, make them more so by having the mosquitos bite at them day and night or have them step in a anthill. If they are happy, they could watch a mother bird feeding its young or a swan rubbing necks with its partner.
Adding more hints of nature could not only amplify the mood, but it could also make your forests seem more real.

I totally think Jinx is autistic/adhd. Not that I need to list proof or anything. As an autistic person with adhd i should just be able to say I hc a character as autistic or adhd or having both because I identify with them and that's that. But I felt like making a list for me and my friends. This is based on the symptoms and traits that I personally have. You might not relate to all of this if you're also autistic or adhd or comorbid like me and that's ok. We're all different.
Note: Autism is usually comorbid with things like, psychosis, bpd and ptsd or C-PTSD and Jinx probably has some of those as well. However I won't be talking about that because im not diagnosed with any of those things. (I think I might have C-PTSD but I'm not sure.)
-She has meltdowns. The first clear example of this is in episode three and then twice in episode four. Although those meltdowns are clearly caused by flashbacks due to her trauma, the reaction she has afterwords reminds me of a meltdown and it's very similar to how she acted in episode three when she was told to stay behind by Vi because she wasn't ready. The crying and screaming mixed with throwing the box to me was a clear meltdown. Meltdowns aren't always stereotypical rocking back and forth and aggressively stimming. Something they're angry, screaming and crying and throwing shit. That's what my meltdowns are like.
-she's very creative and a out of the box thinker
-She's a good shot. Autistic people have the ability to maticulously focus on very tiny details. In my experience this can make you better at things like archery or shooting.
- She displays clear signs of emotional dysregulation which is a symptom of both autism and adhd (very intense emotional outbursts and drastic changes in emotions, I get this is also a PTSD thing but still)
- she hyper focuses on her projects and has a clear special interest in building her makeshift grenades and bombs and stuff.
- She talks to herself and inanimate objects. (I do this a lot, it helps me process my thoughts). I get that this is probably because she's having auditory and visual hallucinations but the line between living in your imagination and actually hallucinating can get blurry. Believe me.
- She moves in a very ADHD way. She's always traveling on the balls of her feet in a very bouncy hoppy way. She moves with so much chaotic energy, all over the place. Also the way she sits is very autistic, always propping her feet up, or leaning over and hugging her knees to her chest. People call it the gay way of sitting. She also moves her hands a lot when she talks.
- She loves things that stimulate her and give her dopamine. Ppl with adhd are lacking in dopamine so we tend to favor things that give you quick and large doses of dopamine like video games. I think this is why Jinx loves the chaos of battle, the fighting and explosions. She finds it stimulating. Basically flashy flashy boom boom make brain go wheeeeeee. This leads me to my next point.
-Jinx is sensory seeking. The stereotype is that autistic people are all sensory avoidant, unable to handle bright lights and loud noises, but some of us are the exact opposite. Like me. Jinx is a very tactile person, she always hugs the people she's closest to (Vi and then later Silco), she puts her feet on Silco's lap when they're talking in episode 4 and presses her face to his and strokes/touches his face in episode 9. She blasts loud music in her workshop and she clearly loves watching things go boom.
- She's different. A huge part of Jinx's character is that ever since she was a kid she's always been the odd one out. She has trouble fitting in and belonging even with her own sister, but she wants so badly to belong. This is a huge part of being autistic or being neurodivergint in general tbh. People don't really like Jinx except for Vi and Silico and even they lose patience with her at times because she's a lot. She's a "problem" she's a shit starter, she can't be controlled. Growing up autistic/adhd you constantly get the message that you're a fuck up and you tend to internalize that as you get older.
- She's impulsive.
- She likes being up high. This is something that's pretty common amongst the autistic people I know and it's also true for me.
- There is also the scene where she takes an idiom literally which is classic autism. "They did a number on her?" "oh yeah which number?"
-She's loyal. Loyal to Vi until her sister (from her point of view) leaves and abandons her and then extremely loyal to Silco until he threatens to kill Vi. And even then after she shoots him she still apologizes and clearly regrets it.
-She has a huge problem with lying. This could also be a result of her trauma but in my experience autistic people place signifant value on honesty and being honest. I know I do. Anytime she catches anyone in a lie, especially someone she cares about or even THINKS someone's lying, she loses it. I also don't think she ever lies in the show. She may fake vauneability to get people to lower their guards around her but she never actually lies.
That's all I can think of for now. I adore Jinx and my heart breaks for her. I just so so much of myself in her. Poor lost girl. She just needs to be loved.

Ppg anon here. Dude, I love all of them lol. But I’ll name a few Gang green gang, Fuzzy Lumpkins, The rose gnome, boogie man, silico and HIM. There’s others but I can’t name them lol
Wow, I remember GGG. Looking them all up is quite a trip down memory lane. Fuzzy Lumpkins, too! Omg. Boogie Man is the slickest mf in the game.  I don’t recall Rose Gnome or Silico, though. Must’ve missed their episodes.
But HIM. That’s my boy right there. I’ve had a crush on that red bastard and his high heels since I was a kid.
