I love a good Andy Carpenter mystery and that goes double for a #Christmas themed one! #SilentBite by David Rosenfelt looks like a fun caper and narration by Grover Gardner just adds to the pleasure! . . #bookaddict #bookstagram #booktreasure #booksandcats #catsandbooks #catswithbooks #catstagram #catsofinstagram #instakitty #amreading #bookish #mystery #thriller (at Madison, Wisconsin) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFvl5EOgiJe/?igshid=6504vwlpdokh

What’s in your invisible backpack?
As seen this week in class, nature interpreter can take many forms and is special for each and every interpreter. We saw throughout our classmates’ presentations that interpretation is based on a number of principles including ethics, beliefs, responsibilities and more. Each of these factors make up our invisible backup and the lens that we see nature through.
Ethics: Moral principles that govern a person’s behaviour or the conducting of an activity
Personally, my ethics surrounded respect, trust, taking responsibility for one’s actions, and kindness.
1.       Respect: My ethics towards this and nature surround the principle of leaving things the way you found them. In nature, we must respect the landscape and understand that things are there for a reason. Grass is there not for us to rip out of the ground and play with, but for us to enjoy, for species to use as habitats, and much more. We must respect nature and if we do… nature will respect us. Currently, we are disrespecting Earth and Nature through Climate Change. This is changing nature for the worse.
2.       Trust: In nature interpretation we place trust in nature that things are going to work out. Even while knowing risk exists, we continue to interpret nature. Nature trusts us to take care of it and to educate others, while we trust nature to take care of us.
3.       Taking Responsibility for One’s Action: As I child, I was always taught to own up to my faults and to my wrong doings. In presentations this week, we heard written interpretations of situations where individuals instead of owning up to their actions, ran away from them (The Logging example where the individual who cut down the golden tree ran away).
4.       Kindness: In interpretation kindness to the audience, and to nature is key. This is one of the most important aspects of ethics that I believe I bring within my invisible backpack. In Anne of Green Gables, town individuals were not always kind to one another or to nature and I think this is wrong. If we destroy nature to an extreme extent, we may not have anything left.

Beliefs: Trust, faith, or confidence in someone or something
As a child, I travelled often. I grew up in Toronto and had parents who worked in London, England, New York, and Boston on the weekly. A big aspect of my childhood was spent enjoying nature through a number of different lenses. I believe that in my invisible backpack is a lens for each area that I traveled too, and larger more intense lenses for areas I spent most of my childhood (Muskoka, Toronto, Arizona). Each of these lenses enhanced my belief and trust in nature education. Over the years I have learnt the importance of experiencing nature whether this be through exploration, imagination, curiosity, or education. Behind my beliefs are numerous years of history. My family cottage/property has been in my family forever. The same location my cousins and I visited as a child were where my uncles, aunts, and father spent their summers. The area is full of history and culture. This enhances the idea of how much trust we place in nature to preserve memories and history.

Responsibilities: The state or fact of having a duty to deal with something or of having control over someone
I believe it is my responsibility as a nature interpreter to…
1.       Educate
2.       Enjoy
3.       Appreciate
4.       Protect
5.       Leave nature the way it was found
We have the opportunity to showcase nature for its beauty. We must consider our impacts on nature, and how nature impacts us.

As interpreters, it is our responsibility to respect nature and to leave nature the way we found it (Quote by Lao-Tzu)
What approaches are most suitable for you as an individual?
If I was to have answered this at the beginning of the semester I would have said through activities such as those done in the arboretum when we broke into groups and interpreted nature based on scenarios. After having experienced nature interpretation in so many different forms I can say that there are a few forms of interpretation that are most suitable for me…. This being through writing (Anne of Green Gables), interpretation through history and art together (paintings, sculptures, gravestones), and interpretation through education (this is the only word I can think of that sums everything that we have learnt thus far) – in each and every lab we were educated in the form of interpretation. By learning new things and through STORYTELLING I was drawn in and interested. I was able to learn things about nature that I did not know before and my interest was sparked.

In class this week, we learnt about a number of authors posing as something they are not (Grey Owl for example). Is this really right? I believe that we need to keep in mind that the best interpretation is through experience. (Gif created by silentbites)
Reflecting on this semester, I find myself wondering what other approaches of nature interpretation exist.
Is there topics that we potentially forget?
What makes nature interpretation so different for each and every one of us?
How can we make certain approaches more accessible for wider audiences of people?

Loving, supportive father of two! Silentpaw and Lizardkit, his pride and joys apple of his eyes
He'd have had more kits with Toadtongue and been there to protect her during the raid.

"Nothing better in the whole wide world than to be loved by Julia."
I could go on and on about how in love these two are and I don't out of respect for not blowing your brains up with sappy lore.
Corner doodle is them as apprentices, Loudpaw would always bring her nest next to Silentpaw's whenever he had to recover in the medicine den. She liked to keep him company, he liked her.
