For the mini ficlet ask game - ship: hanwenzhouliu 💜💜💜
It is a cool, gray day in spring when the guest they've waited for finally arrives at Siji Shanzhuang.
The bells at the gate do not startle the birds in the garden, but they do seem to startle the man in pink who is playing the flute there; his hands fumble as he puts his instrument away and he rushes for the large double doors. He takes a moment to compose himself before opening them.
"Liu Qianqiao," Wen Kexing greets their guest. His voice has genuine warmth this time and, after weeks of practise in anticipation of this moment, he does not even come close to calling her Yan Gui.
Liu Qianqiao is unaccompanied and dressed simply, perhaps to avoid trouble on the road. In response to Wen Kexing's informality she bows deeply.
From his place in the shadows, Zhou Zishu winces. He'd instructed Han Ying to take the other disciples out to the east orchard this morning--and every morning for the past nine of them--in anticipation of this being difficult, but he had still hoped, for Lao Wen's sake, that this would go smoothly.
"Wen-daren," Liu Qianqiao greets as she straightens, face stone, eyes flint.
Because it is Wen Kexing, he does not miss a beat.
He bows with grace as if he always intended to do so and when he says, "After such a long journey, Luo-guniang must wish to come in and rest," it's with such gentlemanly poise that even Zhou Zishu could almost believe it. Almost.
But every line in Liu Qianqiao's body tenses just a fraction and Zhou Zishu knows that she, too, can see where the edges of Wen Kexing's smile have gone brittle. He must admit he's impressed; even Ying'er isn't that good at reading Lao Wen yet, and he's been here since midwinter. Is it their history together, or is she just that good? An apprentice of his shifu isn't someone he's interested in underestimating.
"Wen-daren has asked me here on behalf of Zhou-zhuangzhu. I don't dare waste time before meeting with him, lest the inn down the mountain give my room away."
Whatever Liu Qianqiao sees in Wen Kexing's mood, she meets it with ice.
Gu Xiang, Zhou Zishu thinks, finally putting a finger on the familiarity of the attitude.
"Zhou-shixiong insists you stay here," Wen Kexing asserts with that same forced smile, "and has ordered a suite prepared in advance."
Gu Xiang if she was made of elegant refinement instead of fierce belligerence, Zhou Zishu amends. There is something almost courtly about Liu Qianqiao, and he comes up with at least seven possible explanations for this in the short time it takes Wen Kexing to process her insult.
"The generosity of Zhou-zhuangzhu exceeds his reputation, and I am not worthy; I don't dare accept."
It is at this point that Zhou Zishu tunes out the conversation--or rather, he lets the words flow over him, to be catalogued in some back corner of his mind as he pays attention to the real communication at play. The words are of minimal importance, even more than usual, which is just as well given how greatly his own name is being abused.
He will give them thirty seconds more to de-escalate and then he will step out of his hiding spot.
"Wen-shishu!"
"Wen-shishu, there you are," Han Ying calls as he approaches. "Bi-shidi needs--" A small inhaled breath. "Oh. My apologies, guniang, shishu."
A third voice cuts into the tension like a blade stuck into flesh--deceptively easy for those with practise; the certainty of blood, now, if suddenly removed.
Zhou Zishu tenses.
Zhou Zishu opens his eyes in time to see the shift in Han Ying's body language as he bows to Liu Qianqiao. He in no way authorised this move. He hopes Han Ying knows just how much hell he has coming for this stunt.
Liu Qianqiao's narrowed eyes dart from the newcomer to Wen Kexing and back. But even from here Zhou Zishu can see Wen Kexing's relief is too visible, the tension easing at the corners of his expression; he clearly didn't authorise this, either.
"Han Ying, this is Liu Qianqiao, ambassador of Gui Gu and an important guest of your shifu's," he says. "Liu Qianqiao, this is Han Ying, Siji Shanzhuang's head disciple."
"You had something you needed?" Wen Kexing prompts.
There is a prolonged moment of silence when Han Ying looks up from his bow and into Liu Qianqiao's eyes. Some might call it instant connection, a spark, fate. Zhou Zishu calls it two players on a field sizing one another up.
It's equally gratifying to see Wen Kexing oblivious to Han Ying's intentions--an indirect compliment to Zhou Zishu's own training--as it is to see Liu Qianqiao's suspicions playing in the dips and hollows of her face.
Han Ying's previous urgency creeps back onto his face, not too quickly to be believable. Absently, Zhou Zishu nods his approval.
"Bi-shidi is in the kitchen and needs your help fixing whatever he's done to the soup this time. He said it's urgent."
"I see."
Lips pursing, Wen Kexing sets his shoulders. It could not be more obvious he is about to make one last bid to get Liu Qianqiao to stay before he rushes off to handle this issue. Zhou Zishu shakes his head.
"It is acceptable," she says.
"Shishu," Han Ying slips in, just before Wen Kexing can speak, the model of an attentive disciple, "if it's acceptable to Liu-guniang, I will see her to her quarters while you go help Bi-shidi."
He flashes a tiny smile at Liu Qianqiao and to Zhou Zishu's surprise, she smiles back. Reserved, but she's decided to be genuinely amused by this development, apparently.
"It is acceptable?" Wen Kexing repeats, eyebrows lifting.
Liu Qianqiao does not look at him. "Han-daxia, I am in your care."
"Then I'll leave first. Liu-guniang, if you'll excuse me." With nothing more to be said, Wen Kexing briefly grips Han Ying's shoulder and then takes off toward the kitchen. Their unspoken gratitute--in fact, all the small unspoken ways they have learned to communicate these days--warms Zhou Zishu's heart.
He wonders, though, how long was Han Ying watching? Long enough to go create a real situation in the kitchens? Or only long enough to lie? He's always been very good at thinking on his feet, Ying'er.
Zhou Zishu watches Liu Qianqiao take Han Ying's arm and let herself be led away with a complete absence of fuss. When they're out of sight he lets out a long breath, slumping back against the wall.
That could have gone much worse--Liu Qianqiao has agreed to stay and no battles broke out in the courtyard at all. Not to mention, the exchange was very...informative. The next few days stretch out in Zhou Zishu's mind like a puzzle, a maze that needs careful navigation. If he plays his cards right, he's certain now that he can get what he wants from Gui Gu, and from Liu Qianqiao herself.
And he has quite a few cards left to play. He can hear one even now, singing badly as she hangs up the laundry with help from Xiao Cao, intentionally kept in the dark about their imminent guest.
For now, though, Zhou Zishu has a head disciple that needs talking to, and a shidi whose ruffled feathers need soothing. With one last glance in the direction of the guest house, he heads for the kitchen.

hanwenzhou thought of the day: IM BACK HI!!!!
han ying helping around siji shanzhuang. i’m specifically thinking about them having to rebuild so much of it after it got burnt down, but han ying also would have been recovering at first, so less about him doing heavy lifting (physically and metaphorically) in the main rebuild, and more about him carrying out smaller projects. like, think about wen kexing having all these plans once he starts to settle in, and han ying helping him, a thing wen kexing isn’t quite used to yet. or maybe han ying hearing zhou zishu’s idle comments about things that used to be in the manor, or things that used to be NOT in the manor that he wishes were, and han ying taking it upon himself to plan the project and organize people to actually get these things done. i just think han ying is a very ‘here is a comment and i will Make Practical Action on it’ person, and i think wen kexing and zhou zishu would be both surprised and delighted about it
(also, while i’m thinking about it. please feel free to message me or comment directly on the post if you have any criticism or suggestion on cultural topics i've messed up or that you think i've treated insensitively in these posts! also any other posts, actually, but these are the main original posts i make on this blog haha)

#15: Lantern Festival
Siji Shanzhuang looks beautiful in red; Xie Wang’s discerning eye made the house come alive in scarlet and gold.
He’s hanging his last lantern when Zishu comes up behind him and folds him in a warm embrace.
“Xiao Xie, are you done?” His breath is warm on his ear, sending a sharp shiver down his spine. “You’ve been busy all day long.”
“Laoda. Don’t you have any appreciation for my work?” Xiao Xie touches his lantern, then turns away from its gleam to face his lover, his ge. His light in the dark, the lantern beckoning him home. “Or… could it be you’re jealous? Perhaps you’ve been wishing I’d cover you in red instead?”
Zishu’s eyes burn bright and hot as the flames dancing all around them. “Perhaps I was hoping you’d come… decorate Lao Wen with me. Perhaps I’ve got him all laid out and waiting already.”
Xie Wang laughs. “Well then. It won’t do to keep him waiting.”
Zishu pulls away, just enough to lead him by the hand back into their room. For an instant, Xiao Xie’s vision swims with the sight of his back in a marketplace, in the street, and finally it fades to this:
Zishu, draped in soft silk, hazy with the golden glow of a dozen lanterns. Zishu, bright and brilliant and free. Zishu, pulling him into place at his side.
Xiao Xie smiles hard enough that his face hurts.
This is the best lantern festival of his entire life.

Just as Princess Jing'An did, at the end, he calls out 四季花常在/ 九州事尽知. Smiling and on the edge of tears, it's the last time he'll say it in this life, he thinks, though he'll remember this moment for however much longer he lives—though that probably won't be too long.
Places can be characters in a story just as much as people can, and I think Siji Shanzhuang is a really good example. He's saying it for himself, but he's also saying it the way one might a euology. It is actually even worse, because he had thought he'd already lost it—back in the beginning when he asked not to be called Zhuangzhu anymore—only he didn't realize then that there was still more he could lose.

I participated in @shlbigbang this year!
These are the gifs I made based on mintyfish’s (@_gayexmachina on twitter) AMAZING story Within Us an Orchard on AO3! It’s so well paced, and well written and she’s posting her chapters throughout the day everyone! Please check it out and support it! I love it so much!
How much do I love it? When I signed up for the shlbb, the requirement said 4 manips or 8 gifs so i said my gifs were manips and showed the admins my style. The admins for the bb were ok with that designation. But! Due to how beautifully mintyfish wrote her story, I couldn’t help but make 7 gifs!
Image description behind cut (also, this is my first time writing one, so please let me know if i should restructure the post or not put them under cut etc.)
[Image description: 7 gifs overlaying flowers or garden scenery (rocks) with scenes from Shan He Ling/Word of Honor. Gif 1: Pink peach blossoms with zhou zishu in tian chuang assassin outfit pulling down his mask on the left and qin jiuxiao drinking on the right. Gif 2: Red plum blossoms with zhou zishu looking sad and talking on the left and han ying looking desperate at zishu. Gif 3: bright orange phoenix flowers with two gifs of zhou zishu’s face grimacing from ep 1 as he puts a nail into himself on the left and right flanking zhou zishu’s open palm with a qi-qiao-san-qiu nail in the middle. the hand in the middle is ghostly transparent. Gif 4: Purple azaleas with Bi-shu on the left and Zhou Zishu in tianchuang robes on the right. Zhou zishu’s face is framed by the flowers that overlap his hair and robes. Bi-shu is on top of the flower layer. Gif 5: A stack of small rocks in a garden with water trickling down in the middle. Wen kexing leans into zhou zishu on the left, flirting while fanning himself. On the right, zhou zishu’s face is amused as he turns around (from ep 1 flashback with jiuxiao carving the hair stick) on the right. Gif 6: pink peony blooming in middle overlapping in venn-diagram fashion with wen kexing’s hand reaching out and grabbing zhou zishu’s on the left and wenzhou drinking together in siji shanzhuang on the right. Gif 7: two vibrant magenta peonies blooming on the left and right towards the bottom of the gif. they overlapped wenzhou looking at the four sages on a boat. wenzhou cultivating in ep 36 can be seen overlapping the silhouettes. both versions of wenzhou are slowly zooming out. ]

wen kexing and link. smooch
It is just past noon on a brisk autumn day, and Wen Kexing is basking on his favourite sunny rooftop, drowsing in and out to the drone of midday insects, the warmth of the sun in his bones, when he catches, out of the corner of his eye, one of the Siji disciples coming in through the front gate.
At least, he has no reason to expect it's anyone else accompanying the flash of blue fabric amid the orange blossoms. Not up on their mountain.
Ages of peaceful living have not dulled his reflexes, however, and he's barely deemed the person not worth turning to look at when some hesitance in their step sends an alert pinging through his nervous system.
Wen Kexing blinks himself fully awake and peers across the empty courtyard, nostrils flaring, hands twitching. Not a disciple. Not even someone he knows. Hm.
Siji Shanzhuang's mysterious visitor seems to be in no hurry to locate the residents of the manor they've just waltzed into, either, taking in the cultivated garden at a leisurely stroll as though they have all the time in the world and every right to the places in it. They're no messenger, not with a soldier's tension in their limbs and an elaborate sword strapped to their back...
A sword that looks familiar, Wen Kexing thinks, squinting at the sheath as it catches the sunlight in sapphire and gold. He can't quite place it at this distance.
He watches, waiting, but the stranger doesn't notice him at all after a couple minutes and that just won't do. He scoffs under his breath as he stands and with a flourish he descends from the roof to touch down in the courtyard, right in full view. As the birds take off from the blossoming trees around him he strikes a pose of exaggerated grace, a swirling vision of robes in bright Siji colours, fan fluttering, head tilting at a playful angle to let his hair fall appealingly over his shoulder. Or, it would, if it wasn't all pinned up today.
The visitor flinches almost too obviously--their sharp eyes and subtle shift into fighting stance reinforce Wen Kexing's assumptions. A warrior of some kind. Sent here on some mission, perhaps. Delightful! It's been much too long since he got to play this sort of game.
Wen Kexing is the picture of a perfect gentleman, only the barest hint of danger threaded along the edges of his welcome as he approaches. "Welcome, traveller," he says. "What business have you with Sij--Fi?!"
He is cut off by a jolt of memory as the stranger's sword shimmers again, this time with its own internal light. The echo of an old friend dances around the courtyard in teasing glimpses of silvery-blue. If Fi is here, then--
His eyes snap back to the visitor and he looks so different than Wen Kexing remembers. Older, or younger, or longer in the face, or shorter in the ears, or just. Different. But then, who doesn't look different after a few thousand years. Relief and nostalgia bloom together, a flowering fractal in his gut. It has to be. "...Link?"
Link's brow shoots from deeply furrowed to pushing at his hairline. Wen Kexing's fan falls closed as his facade drops and he rushes over to grab him by the shoulders, laughing in delight as he looks him over. "It is!"
Amusingly, he seems even smaller than he used to, but such is the way of memories when their subject is larger than life. His mouth drops open but Wen Kexing doesn't bother to let him get a word in first, gripping his shoulders tighter and hauling him into an enthusiastic kiss, curled down over him almost possessively, taking advantage of his open mouth, unrelenting from the start as if they're already in the bedroom. Link startles, the muscles in his arms tensing under Wen Kexing's fingers, but somewhere between a muffled squawk and a huff of amusement, he melts into it.
He's smaller but not remotely less strong; Wen Kexing can feel that overwhelming spirit rushing up to meet his, now that they're touching. Ah, he has missed the thrill of holding something this powerful between his hands, has missed Link himself.
How long has it been? Even longer than the last time he saw Ye Baiyi, surely.
Sadly, though, he can't just have Link right here in the courtyard. He wants to. He contemplates it. But...no, not when an actual disciple could come in at any time. He's a responsible shishu, in spite of all A-Xu's claims to the contrary. So after a lingering minute he sighs and pulls away.
He expects any manner of things to come out of Link's mouth when he finally lets him have it back--the sound of his own name, an explanation for why he's here or where he's been, even asking after A-Xu, or Chengling.
What he doesn't expect is for Link to step back, a bit dazed, lick his slightly swollen bottom lip, clear his throat, and say, sheepishly, "Well that was nice...but, uh...who are you?"

"It's a good thing you belong to A-Xu," Wen Kexing muses.
Zhang Zhehan was supposed to say goodbye.
Gong Jun wakes up.
Wen Kexing wears red.
"This is the second New Year's we've missed at Siji Shanzhuang," Jing Beiyuan says, and sighs at the wagon window.
When the alarm sounds in the middle of the night Chengling goes to his father's room before anything else; it's dark, and everything's on fire, and it's the one place he's always known safety.
Zhou Zishu is a creature of darkness.
"I'm back!~"
It's funny how some things grow you up quickly.
