My media this week (10-16 Nov 2024)
ngl fam this again was my brain this past week
đ STUFF I READ đ
đ„° The Imposition of Unnecessary Obstacles (Mossa & Pleiti #2) (Malka Ann Older, author; Lindsey Dorcus, narrator) - another lovely mystery novella with Mossa & Pleiti - I admit I sometimes find Pleiti frustrating because I'm very much a 'if I want to know what's going on with someone I ask them kind of person' so I have little patience for her dithering BUT it's only occasional, it's always mild and I love everything else SO MUCH, especially the world.
đ„° The Wonder of Stevie (Wesley Morris, author; various narrators) - an in-depth look at Stevie Wonder's 'classic period' when he was transitioning from kid entertainer to adult thru deep dives into each of the 5 albums he produced from 1972-1977; technically a podcast but the audible version packaged like a book has an extra interview with Barack Obama & Stevie Wonder
đ„° Untitled Truck Stop AU (JessRoseDraws) - reread for Stucky Book Club - really love this (almost)historical fic of truck stop sex worker Bucky & hermit mountain man Steve
đ Possession (Leather & Chrome #4) (Kiki Clark) - look, the heart wants what the heart wants, and sometimes the heart just wants a MC daddy dom taking care of two twinks
đđ +319K of shorter fic so shout out to these đđ
Where the Heart Is (Chancy_Lurking) - MCU: stucky, 12K - no powers, roommates-to-lovers/fake relationship
The Long Walk Home (Arbeds Ghost (GhostDeb)) - Stranger Things: steddie, 12K - college AU, steve has insomnia, eddie's the late-night DJ
A Really Private Person (astolat) - Person of Interest: finch/reese, 18K - an asteroid is going to annihilate earth but harold & the machine can save the day

THE EPILOGUE:
I wrote a funny ending to the story I told on the RISK! podcast that I think you'll enjoy. It needed to be cut because it was a little goofy and also made the story way too long, but a number of friends asked me to share it. This wonât spoil the story for you, I promise. If you havenât heard the whole thing though, you should listen to it. Itâs good.
Itâs the 3rd story in the show entitled âReversals.â
All you need to know for this little epilogue is that my first serious relationship in middle school/high school did NOT end well. My ex-girlfriendâs father, in a very nice way (it really was a nice conversation even though my hands were shaking in fear as he spoke), told me to never contact his daughter again. I never did, but here is something that did happen years laterâŠ
When I was 20, I spent my winter break from college working at a Barnes & Noble in Cleveland, Ohio. I fulfilled many demeaning tasks that older, full-time booksellers would never do. Chief among them was dressing as Winnie-the-Pooh for childrenâs story time. This task was not written in my job description, and even if it were, most of what happens to a person inside a mascot costume will never appear in writing for fear someone will sue the company for abusing its employees. Hereâs what happens:
-Firstly, youâre not permitted to speak because little kids will freak out and scream: âThatâs not how he sounds in the movie!â and the magic spell of thinking theyâre actually seeing Winnie-the-Pooh will be broken, and childhoods will be ruined. Because you canât speak, you have to come up with a special hand signal so your manager will know if you need anything, like water or a break or to put in your two weeks notice. The signal I chose was putting both hands as high up in the air as possible, as if being held at gunpoint, and waving them as if I were drowning. Surely, that would look like a person in distress and I would be ushered into the break room to take off the costume immediately.
-Secondly, you will sweat out every drop of moisture in your body within the first ten minutes of wearing the suit. Itâs like youâre own personal steam bath that smells like itâs never been cleaned.
-Thirdly, children will check to see what gender you are, and theyâll do so by balling up a fist and taking a swing at your genitals. If you collapse on the floor, theyâll cheer and yell âheâs a boy!â
Physical exhaustion, not being able to verbally protest, and getting hit in the balls while being referred to as âPoohâ is a nice crystallization of what itâs like to work at a chain bookstore. One day, I danced through a whole story time as Winnie-the-Pooh, when I was asked by my manager: âPooh, are you up for taking a few pictures with our guests?âÂ
I raised both hands in the air as if begging to God to be taken out of the suit. âThat means heâs ready!â yelled my manager. Ugh.
The next voice I heard was familiar. I heard a woman say âPooh, would you like to hold the newest edition?â
I turned to see my high school ex-girlfriendâs mom and most of my ex-girlfriendâs family. Her mother was holding an infant. My exâs sister had recently had a baby, and it appeared this was one of their first family outings with him.
I shrugged. I wasnât able to speak and I was hidden inside the Pooh Bear mask. Whatâs the harm? I held the baby and posed for five or six photos with a family that despised me. What I really wanted to do was start whispering warnings to the baby like: âListen, you gotta watch out for your aunt. Sheâs nuts, dude!âÂ
During the photo shoot, I had this outlandish fear that one of the cameras would flash and somehow light up the inside of my mask to reveal my face so that when they looked at the photo the girlâs dad would say: âAnd hereâs the babyâs first trip to the bookstore, and- HEY! Is that Dan Wilbur?! I thought I told him to never come near our family!!â
That probably didnât happen. More likely, the photo is on their mantel right now.

 Remy: Horrifying Tweets Resurface
https://youtu.be/mpHiDsnqOSA
ReasonTV
Remy returns to the news desk to bring you what passes for journalism these days. Written and Performed by Remy.
LYRICS: Trudeau denies the report. Ed? A rough week for Canada's first black prime minister. Thanks, Tim. A problem long posed, now finally an answer A cure has been found to a rare form of cancer. We'll tell you who found it, what he thinks this means, And dig up some tweets from his early teens. Plus the Good Samaritan, whose quickness and breadth Saved a family of four from a fiery death. We'll ask how he did it, how he made it in time, And why he tweeted this back in 2009. Uh, Ed? Yes, Tim. Forgive the defiance But I think we should focus on the news part, the science And not what they tweeted back when they were 10 The science, hmm. I'll try it again. Archaeologists have unearthed a series of tweets Made by this local hero when he was 13. Will this middle-school tweet soon mean his demise? Our report might just win the Pulitzer Prize. Pulitzer Prize? In what? Scrolling down? We found immature things immature people wrote down. Our country's at war and that's the story we sought? War coverage, yesâI'll give it a shot. This Navy SEAL unit is now under fire For a series of tweets, we'll take our magnifier And pay no attention to how their recent life's been And tell you what you should think that says about them. Says about them? What's it say about us? That the first thing we do after someone's discussed Is comb through their childhood looking for dirt. OK, I can do this, I assure you I'm cured. Well she's the first woman to serve on the board Of our town's city councilâand she just signed an accord. We'll comb through the details of what she did write And through years of her tweets in hopes of wrecking her life. OK, see, I hate this, this is just what we do Make things controversial for clicks and for views. When we're covering news, should our first thought each time Be "Let's find what they tweeted back when they were nine"? Finally, millions can now walk thanks to his prosthesis But a hateful hand signal when he was a fetus Leads many to now question what he promotes. We'll toss him in a well and see if he floats.
Dennis Prager talks to Pete Hegseth, Host of Fox and Friends, and US Army Major. He teaches the new PragerU video, âWho Should Win the Nobel Peace Prize?â
Who Should Win the Nobel Peace Prize?
https://youtu.be/zorsPXbnf80
PragerU
Theyâve saved the free world more than once. And theyâre on the job preserving the peace right now. When it comes to making the world a more secure place for good and decent people everywhere, this one group deserves the bulk of the credit. Who is this group, and how can we ever thank them? Pete Hegseth, U.S. Army Major, has the answer. This video was made possible by a generous grant from Colorado Christian University. Learn more at PragerU.com/CCU
Script: If the Nobel Peace Prize was given out to people who truly made the world a more peaceful place, one group would win every year: the United States militaryâthe US Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marines. Now, you may be thinking, how can you award a peace prize to a group whose purpose is to fight wars? Fair question. Iâll tell you how: because the reason we are free, the reason anyone on earth today is free, is ultimately thanks to the US military. They saved the free world from German domination in the First World War. They saved the free world from Japanese and German fascism in the Second World War. They saved the free world from communism in the Cold War. And theyâre saving it now. That might sound like an exaggeration, but only because theyâve protected us for so long. National securityâthe protection of citizens from an external foeâis not a given; far from it. Itâs the product of the hard work of American military men and women who stand guard 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, every year. And, theyâve been doing so for as long as any of us can remember. The First World War, the Second World War, the Cold War, the Korean War, both Iraq Wars, the Afghan Warâthese were all conflicts that the US tried to avoid. But they were wars that the US fought not only for itself, but for good, decent and free people everywhere. Where the US military was not ultimately victoriousâthe Vietnam Warâ50 million people were deprived of freedom of speech, of assembly, of press, of travel, and of religion. As many as two million were brutally imprisoned and murdered. The only reason South Korea isnât an open-air concentration camp like its northern neighbor is because America came to South Koreaâs defense nearly 70 years ago. To this day, we still have 30,000 troops stationed there to protect the free South from the unfree North. And itâs not just the open conflicts the American military resolves; itâs the not-warsâall the conflicts that were never fought because our adversaries feared the consequences of American military involvement. Letâs put it this way: The reason Iowa soybeans can be shipped from Seattle to Shanghai, or coffee from Colombia to Cleveland is because the American militaryâspecifically, the Navyâstands guard over the worldâs shipping lanes. Block those lanes and the price of everything skyrockets, and international commerce grinds to a halt. Like it or not, the US military has been, and remains, as close to a global sheriff as exists on planet Earthâon the beat, keeping the peace. Donât believe me? Ask yourself this very simple question: What if China disarmed? Or Iran? Or North Korea? Or Russia? Think the world would be a better or worse place? The question answers itself. Now, imagine if America disarmed. Think China stays out of Taiwan or Hong Kong? Iran out of Israel? North Korea out of South Korea? Russia out of eastern Europe? And those are just state actors. Islamists would quickly return, bolder and more vicious than ever. For the complete script, visit https://www.prageru.com/video/who-sho...

The Rational Bible: Exodus by Dennis Prager Â
NATIONAL BESTSELLER "Dennis Prager has put together one of the most stunning commentaries in modern times on the most profound document in human history. It's a must-read that every person, religious and non-religious, should buy and peruse every night before bed. It'll make you think harder, pray more ardently, and understand your civilization better." â Ben Shapiro, host of "The Ben Shapiro Show" "Dennis Pragerâs commentary on Exodus will rank among the greatest modern Torah commentaries. That is how important I think it is. And I am clearly not alone... It might well be on its way to becoming the most widely read Torah commentary of our timeâand by non-Jews as well as by Jews." â Rabbi Joseph Telushkin, bestselling author of Jewish Literacy Why do so many people think the Bible, the most influential book in world history, is outdated? Why do our friends and neighbors â and sometimes we ourselves â dismiss the Bible as irrelevant, irrational, immoral, or all of these things? This explanation of the Book of Exodus, the second book of the Bible, will demonstrate that the Bible is not only powerfully relevant to todayâs issues, but completely consistent with rational thought. Do you think the Bible permitted the trans-Atlantic slave trade? You wonât after reading this book. Do you struggle to love your parents? If you do, you need this book. Do you doubt the existence of God because belief in God is âirrational?â This book will give you reason after reason to rethink your doubts. The title of this commentary is, âThe Rational Bibleâ because its approach is entirely reason-based. The reader is never asked to accept anything on faith alone. As Prager says, âIf something I write does not make rational sense, I have not done my job.â The Rational Bible is the fruit of Dennis Pragerâs forty years of teaching the Bible to people of every faith, and no faith. On virtually every page, you will discover how the text relates to the contemporary world and to your life. His goal: to change your mind â and then change your life.

The Rational Bible: Genesis by Dennis PragerÂ
USA Today bestseller Publishers Weekly bestseller Wall Street Journal bestseller Many people today think the Bible, the most influential book in world history, is not only outdated but irrelevant, irrational, and even immoral. This explanation of the Book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible, demonstrates clearly and powerfully that the opposite is true. The Bible remains profoundly relevantâboth to the great issues of our day and to each individual life. It is the greatest moral guide and source of wisdom ever written. Do you doubt the existence of God because you think believing in God is irrational? This book will give you many reasons to rethink your doubts. Do you think faith and science are in conflict? You wonât after reading this commentary on Genesis. Do you come from a dysfunctional family? It may comfort you to know that every family discussed in Genesis was highly dysfunctional! The title of this commentary is âThe Rational Bibleâ because its approach is entirely reason-based. The reader is never asked to accept anything on faith alone. In Dennis Pragerâs words, âIf something I write is not rational, I have not done my job.â The Rational Bible is the fruit of Dennis Pragerâs forty years of teaching the Bibleâwhose Hebrew grammar and vocabulary he has masteredâto people of every faith and no faith at all. On virtually every page, you will discover how the text relates to the contemporary world in general and to you personally. His goal: to change your mindâand, as a result, to change your life.

My media this week (29 Sep-5 Oct 2024)
đ STUFF I READ đ
đ i never did believe in miracles (but i've a feeling it's time to try) (cuoredimuschio) - 215K, steddie - a slow burn, perfectly angsted, absolutely hilariously written getting together fic. like, so funny, y'all.
đ Three Men Out (Nero Wolfe #23) (Rex Stout)
đ„° bittersweet in the sunlight (2bestfriends) - 65K, vampire/werewolf AU, reread, stucky book club pick - what's supposed to be a 'quick & dirty fuck' leads to breaking down centuries of bucky's isolation - a very enjoyable fic
đ Mystery Magnet (The Last Picks #1) (Gregory Ashe, author; Andrew Gibson, narrator) - entertaining cozy mystery. Wasn't so compelling that I couldn't dip out of it to listen to podcasts but definitely fun enough to finish. And I'll probably read the next one in the series.
đđ +56K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved đđ
Wide Open Spaces (emchant3d) - MCU: stucky, 2K - short & đ„đ„đ„ skinny!steve/beefy!bucky
