Van Buren Street Station, Chicago

Van Buren Street Station, platform level view
The Van Buren Street Station, 132 E. Van Buren at Michigan Avenue, is a commuter rail station in downtown Chicago serving the southbound Metra Electric Line, as well as the South Shore Line to Gary and South Bend, Indana.. It is the oldest active station building on the Metra Electric line. The station is located in Grant Park to the east of Michigan Avenue at Van Buren Street.
Tumblr media
One of the station's entrances is a replica of an Hector Guimard-designed, Art Nouveau-style Paris Métro entrance. The entrance was given to Chicago as a gift by the city of Paris in 2001. The Guimard entrance will be relocated as part of a station renovation to be completed by 2027.
The station was originally constructed by the Illinois Central Railroad (incorporated 1836; operated independently until 1972), and completed in 1896.

"Lake Front Improvement No. 98. Van Buren St. Station and Viaduct. Looking N. from E. end Harrison St. viaduct."
The Van Buren Station is the first Metra stop south of the Millenium Station, the northern terminus of the South Shore Line.
The station is completely invisible from the street, constructed below grade, one level below Grant Park. From Michigan Avenue, passengers descend stairs to a long, featureless tunnel about a block long, which splits into up and down ramps that easily confuse the visitor, and are inadequately labeled for the ticket office and main level, or down toward Platform 2 access.
Tumblr media
I saw the Van Buren Street Station for the first time when I took a train to Hyde Park, and decided not to depart from Millenium Station, which can be a confusing space to navigate. Nothing prepared me for this underground slice of history, and its largely intact tile and terra cotta waiting areas.
Tumblr media
The station is below the level of the park, only its roof surrounded by a balustrade visible from above. The pedestrian viaduct over its center leads to the eastern side of Grant Park and the Lincoln statue. Entrances are from the sidewalk on the west side of Michigan Avenue, and from the Guimard Paris metro and stairs at "Van Buren Entrance" in the screencap above.
Tumblr media
The station's placement is illustrated in the above plan, in The Inland Architect and News Record, Vol. XXIX No. 1, February 1897, Special Supplement p. 2.
Tumblr media
The station's plan (above) and section (below) were also reproduced in the 1897 Inland Architect.
"Francis T. Bacon was the supervising architect of the Illinois Central Railroad system from the mid-1890s until 1907. Bacon died in Chicago on June 18, 1909, at the age of 43, after having been in private practice for two years." - Wikipedia entry
The Engineering Record, Building Record and Sanitary Engineer, Volume 60, 1909, cited in the wikipedia entry, doesn't reveal any further details of his life.
Tumblr media
In this section, the station wall is heavily buttressed on the left, under the ground of Grant Park. A balustrade surrounds the ground-level roof, and the train platform is at right.
Tumblr media
A glowing contemporary description of the station from The Inland Architect details the Waiting rooms' features and construction materials:
After passing the ticket inspectors, those taking express trains turn to the right and those for local trains to the left, in the central distributing corridor. From this corridor the passengers are ushered into two magnificent waiting rooms, each 34 feet by 106 feet and 9 ½ feet high. These rooms, for beauty, substantiality and completeness of appointments and conveniences, will compare favorably with those of any railway station in the world, even though naturally restricted in height of ceiling. The floors of the wating and toilet rooms, also corridor, are all paved with English floor tile; the foyer, vestibule and south entrance are paved with ceramic mosaic, and the bas throughout is of polished Tennessee marble. The walls are faced with Maw’s écru glazed tile, 3 by 6 inches, patented lock back, and the ceilings are of cast plates of stucco, forming a design of Gothic tracery. The cornices and girders and also finished in stucco, the point of junction with the glazed tile walls being covered with a mahogany molding. There are two rows of cast-iron columns in each room, which are incased in écru glazed terra cotta, elaborately molded and ornamented.
The windows of the ticket offices are covered with elaborate, handmade, wrought-iron grilles, some of which are polished and electroplated with bronze.

Tumblr media
The station originally featured, apart from two waiting rooms, smoking rooms, a ladies' retiring room and lavatory, and a matron's room at the south end of the building.
The men's lavatory, bootblacking stand, toilet and janitor rooms are at the north end. There are also private lavatories for the attendants and locker rooms for the railroad employees. All these are under the space of 14 feet wide and 300 feet along the park side, and already occupied by the entrances, and are lighted through ceilings of cast iron and glass.
Source: The Inland Architect and News Record, Vol. XXIX No. 1, February 1897, Special Supplement p. 2
Tumblr media
The tiles on the walls were manufactured by Maw & Co., of Shropshire, England, and are supplied and set by their agents, Hawes & Dodd, of this city, and are chiefly remarkable for their evenness of color, highly finished glaze, and freedom from the technical fault known as "Crazing."

Tumblr media
The Inland Architect article also noted the building's fireproof construction, including terra-cotta-clad iron columns, and that the entire interior was washable.
Not all of the station's original features remain. The cast-plaster ornamental ceiling is long gone, as are some of the more elaborate decorative elements, such as scrolled wall brackets and an ornamental drinking fountain shown in a period photo below.
Tumblr media
No trace remains of the original marble and bronze recessed drinking fountains or decorative brackets above.
Tumblr media
The column bases and bright inlaid flooring, in need of some restoration, are still in place.
Tumblr media
The tilework remains intact, but the original ornamental ceiling has been replaced, as well as some other decorative elements.
Tumblr media
Original mahogany waiting-room furniture includes this curved corner bench. The benches have brass feet, to facilitate cleaning the floors.

More London streets - the river of commerce
Ok following on from St James' Park Pics and the mega-thread from the South Bank via Mayfair to Soho Square, I thought you creators out there might enjoy some more London streetness. This one has no direct connection to the Good Omens universe, but I think fan writers might like it. I'll explain later.
Today, we're going to walk together from Tottenham Court Road Underground Station, to Marble Arch.
I come out on the Oxford Street side, and pause briefly in the middle of the diagonal crossing to take this picture, facing away from where I'm going next. If I wanted to go to the British Museum I would go this way. It will also pass to the north of the City of London. Notice that we can see quite a long way, between the buildings: the sky comes down past the top of that bus.
Tumblr media
Now I turn around, and face towards Oxford Circus. This is where we are going. I start a stopwatch on my phone. There is a curve, but we can still see quite a long way.
Tumblr media
Once I round the curve, I can pretty much see a horizon at eye level. There's a gentle slope downhill.
Tumblr media
Ten minutes after leaving Tottenham Court Road, I reach Oxford Circus. I point my phone briefly North, to show you Regent Street. That round pointy thing is All Souls Church, and behind it is BBC Broadcasting House.
Tumblr media
I point South. This is the way towards Piccadilly Circus. We crossed this road just down there when I showed you the way from Mayfair to Soho.
Tumblr media
But, for now, I continue straight on. The first time I ever came to Oxford Street, about twenty-five years ago now, I remember having a moment of wonder, imagining the mighty river of commerce flowing through it. It's shops all the way, some with offices above. If you're overwhelmed by crowds I do not recommend coming here. This is a Sunday, post-pandemic, and it's very quiet indeed.
Tumblr media
This is the John Lewis department store. It's a capitalist workers cooperative - the founder's son set it up in 1929, and the employees own all the shops collectively and share in the profits. They also employ contractors on various terms. It's pretty interesting, if you're into that sort of thing.
Tumblr media
The two other major department store chains in this section of the street both went bust in lockdown. Debenhams and House of Fraser. I won't waste a picture on them for now.
After another ten minutes I come to Bond Street.
Tumblr media
Continuing, I pass the mighty (or, at least, mightily pretentious) Selfridges Department Store, where I once bought a very very tiny cuddly toy in the shape of a sheep, as a present for my beloved Mum. You can spend thousands on a handbag here, if that's your thing.
Tumblr media
This street, with Bond Street and Oxford Circus Tube stations on it, forms the southern boundary of Marylebone.
A little beyond Selfridges, I am standing at Marble Arch. It is a triumphal arch, placed here in 1851. It is at the north-east corner of Hyde Park, and is a usual meeting point for really large-scale political demonstrations, such as the marches against Brexit and against the Iraq war.
I see the road continue downhill, like this. It's called the Bayswater Road, because that's the first place it goes. From here, it forms the southern boundary of Paddington.
Tumblr media
If you are from the US, or even from Barcelona, you might not have noticed anything strange about these pictures so far, beyond their basic foreign-ness and everyone driving on the other side. If you're from London, on the other hand, you might feel a vague sense that something is a bit odd.
The odd thing is that I've just walked for a hair under thirty minutes without turning a corner or going round a significant bend. If I wanted, I could continue for at least that distance again. Compare my previous post, which shows how central London streets normally look. But I've just walked along one street, in a straight line, for thirty minutes. This would be absolutely normal for a US city, but it never happens in London. It's exceptional, and strange.
The road also forms the boundary between districts whose names have been there for a long time. With certain exceptions, European cities aren't designed: people didn't lay out a plan and think of meaningful names for districts. Cities just happened because people had stuff to do, things to trade, people to see, gods and saints to ask for favour. Names aren't given, they are organic, they grow and attach and stick to places over time, and if you notice that a feature is a boundary between two names, it usually tells you something. When there is any straight line for any distance, it means something. What's going on?
What's going on is this: this is a Roman road. It was built by the Roman Army, two thousand years ago. It is the source of the Portway, or Devil's Highway, which went from Londinium, well to my West as I stood at Tottenham Court Road, via Portes, now called Staines, to the place now called Silchester, where it divided and went on in several directions. That "chester" in an English place name usually means there was a Roman military camp, a castra, there. The line we have just traced together was laid out by Caesar's legions.
But wait, there's more! I've used up my 10 images per post, though, so will be right back.

The late morning sun peeked between the Center City towers to the south, breaking through the smog haze emanating from the drone freighters parked at the port. The streets of Rhawnhurst were already abuzz with life; she passed the barbershop and Señor Rodriguez’s dry cleaners and old Madam Tupolov begging for change outside the automat café as she walked down Bustleton Avenue toward the intersection with Cottman, taking the long route to school. Not that anyone would notice that she was late, or ditched entirely; it would be hard to make out any individual student in classes that ranged up toward fifty students. The public schools were still drastically underfunded with an urban tax base that was quickly dwindling. They said on the holo that the state had threatened to bring in another private contractor to run them, but they’d tried at least twice before to little avail, and what would they pay them with? The Delaware had flooded three out of the last five years, each time cresting to a new record and washing out more homes along its banks and tributaries. Turquoise had overheard her mother and aunt whispering about property values, and she knew that in some way that was tied to school funding.
A drone truck cut the corner at Cottman trying to make the light, clipping the curb and sending a splash of sewage run off spraying up on the cracked sidewalk. “Watch where you’re going!” she screamed in vain as she dodged out of the way, knowing full well it couldn’t hear her. “Piece of shit truck.” She wiped the water from her coat, a dark purple hand-me-down from her sister Destiny, and flipped off the truck as the cross-walk indicator turned. Her shoes, worn with age, were soaked through to her ratty socks, and now made squishing sounds as she walked.
Turquoise hated school, but she’d made a deal with her mother that she’d keep going, to her science and math classes anyway, and when she finished her homework she could go down to Mister Krystkiewicz’s studio in the basement. Mama stressed that she needed to focus on her education, that it was the only way she’d ever make her way out of here. But the universities were just as packed as the public schools; her counselor had told her there were ten applicants for every seat, even at the community colleges, and her grades weren’t good enough to qualify for a scholarship. Her mother worked three swing shift jobs just to keep food on the table, and even then they were all crammed into a two-bedroom apart they shared with her aunt’s three children. There was no way any of them could afford any kind of higher schooling, but Turquoise had never had any interest anyway: she was born to be an artist, she was sure, no matter how impractical that might be in the current age. Kris, as she shortened her neighbor’s borderline-unpronounceable eastern European surname, had told her numerous times she had promise, and some days that was the only thing that kept her going. At fifteen, her life was approaching a turning point, where adulthood would quickly become a pressing reality, and with it the requirement to find some way to provide for herself or become one of the hundred million Americans living below the poverty line.
Her grandmother had been the one to inspire her; her mother agreed, but would likely prefer the term “blame.” Dolores Quinlan had been a woman out of time, before her lungs had given out, a remnant of an era of opportunity. She would take Turquoise and her sister to the art museum once a month on the free Sundays, and afterward she would walk the girls down Fairmount Avenue for ice cream, making sure to point out the large mural of Irene Brevis, even then still mentioned with the reverence of hushed tones. The elderly woman, an idealistic academic in a world rapidly devolving towards the brutally pragmatic, did her best to instill in her granddaughters an appreciation for the abstract and intangible. Turquoise delighted in the visits, drinking in the history and the artistry in equal amounts. The sculpture gallery was her favorite; she loved to walk underneath the dangling installation chimes of Ole Sted as they glittered and whistled in the ambient breeze. One day she hoped to work in a similar medium, and Kris had dug up an old MIG weld unit for her to practice on tin cans and other sheet metal she collected from the building recycling dumpster. Her mother was skeptical but supportive, and mostly concerned that she didn’t burn down the only building she could afford to house them.
As she rounded the corner onto Cottman, she noticed the same drone that had nearly hit her driving erratically and squealing to a stop at the next stoplight. Catching up to it, she looked through the window, and noticed that this particular truck was being piloted by an actual person. It was peculiar to see, but not altogether strange; she knew some trucks carried armed security to protect valuable cargo or oversee important deliveries. The man in the truck was not wearing a Union uniform, though, and he had what appeared to be a bandana wrapped around his nose and mouth. He was sweating, even through the air conditioning of the truck, and pounding on the steering wheel as if to will the traffic light to change.
In the distance, she heard sirens wail, and as she turned to look, the engine of the truck roared to life as it flew forward into the intersection, through the red light. Horns blared as the cars in the cross-traffic swerved to avoid it, and with a loud thud a sedan collided full-speed with the back corner of the truck, sending both vehicles spiraling through the intersection.
The sedan barreled toward Turquoise. She screamed, more instinct than conscious fear, and dropped her school bag to the pavement, ducking into a squat as if that might offer any protection. The car crashed head-on into the support pole for the traffic light, the metal and plastic bending and buckling with a terrible groan as a shower of sparks flew to the ground. The front end crumpled to a heap, and she heard the loud pop of airbags deploying from within the passenger compartment. A dark black smoke belched and hissed from under the crushed bonnet cover.
Turquoise was disoriented; her ears rang from the sounds and her head spun as she tried to stand back up. She stood before bending reflexively at the waist, and steadied herself by leaning against the now-bent light pole. Her vision was blurred, likely from shock, and she felt slightly nauseous, probably just as much from the stench of the car’s burned electronics as the adrenaline flooding her system.
She heard a low moan from the passenger of the sedan. Turquoise breathed deep and cautiously tip-toed around to the side of the car, peering through the shattered window. It was a woman, slight and not much older than herself. She was dressed in business clothes, a blazer and slacks, and blood caked her white blouse. Her head was supported by the deployed airbag, its cushion now stained with a mixture of blood and makeup. She wasn’t moving, and her breathing was heavy and laborious. Turquoise shook her shoulder gently. “Ma’am? Are you okay?”
The woman screamed, high and shrill. Turquoise jumped back, startled. “Are you okay?” she asked again. “Here, let’s get you out.”
The woman’s screams turned to sobs. She was clearly still in shock from the crash. Turquoise tugged at the door, trying to free the woman from the car, but it was stuck. She pulled again at the handle, harder this time, and it gave way; the door came free from the broken hinges at the frame and slammed to the pavement with a heavy clang. There was blood everywhere. The woman’s leg was pinned below the now-crushed console; a long jagged piece of the bent door frame was jammed deep into her calf muscle. She continued to cry, deep painful gasps. “I think my leg is broken,” she mewed through the sobs.
“Stay here. I’ll get help,” Turquoise said, summoning a calmness to her voice that masked her internal panic. She turned away from the car toward the rest of the chaos. Across the intersection the truck had spun a half-rotation and bounced off a fire hydrant before slamming sideways into the glass facade of a storefront. The hydrant rocket into the air, a geyser of pressurized water throwing the cast iron fixture high into the sky only to come crashing onto the roof of a parked car, its bleating alarm now adding to the cacophany of the scene.
Turquoise walked slowly across the street, taking care to avoid the shards of broken glass that now littered the intersection. Traffic had come to a stop, and people were slowly getting out of their cars to assess the scene. A man on a mobile had a holo open, and it looked like he was coordinating with an emergency dispatcher. She approached the truck quietly, and the door to the passenger compartment flew open, the driver spilling down into a heap on the sidewalk the sidewalk. His shirt was torn slightly, but he seemed mostly unharmed apart from a cut across his forehead. He quickly bolted upright and clutched his arm gingerly while he looked around, confused. She tried to ask him if he needed help, but as she got close he took off, sprinting toward an alleyway behind the ruined storefront.
“Hey! Hey asshole, get back here!” she yelled after him, giving chase, but after a few steps she thought better of it and let him go. She’d gotten a good look at him, and the police were sure to want her statement when they arrived.
A bang behind her caused her already quickened pulse to skyrocket. She turned around and found that the loading door at the rear of the truck had sprung open in the crash, and was swaying in the early morning breeze, clanging against the side of the building. Boxes and crates had spilled out of it and were scattered across the sidewalk, and several people were now gathered around, gawking at the contents.
Turquoise joined them. Several of the crates had broken up, and her eyes quickly went wide in terror. She immediately recognized what she saw from the nightly news feeds; one didn’t grow up in one of America’s most violent cities without knowing a gun when they saw it. But these weren’t the small handguns she’d seen tucked into the waistbands of wanna-be thugs and bangers; these were large and heavy, with polished chrome finishing that glinted in the morning sun. There were five to a crate, and she counted at least ten more crates.
Inside the truck were more, and things she couldn’t name but looked just as dangerous. Large tubes with switches and holo-projectors were scattered on the floor. A dozen or so heavy-looking vests were piled in a cardboard box; a large, inactive drone was parked on the bed, but not the type of delivery or advertising drones she’d seen before. This one was sharp, angular, and with much bigger rotors. It had small stanchions to either side where large, multi-barreled guns were mounted. It was painted matte black with cartoon shark teeth along the front edge.
And in the far back of the cargo area, near to the passenger compartment, sat a large plastic vat. It had various tubes connected between it and some kind of controller that sat next to it. The apparatus hummed quietly, but ominously. Turquoise wasn’t sure what she was looking at, but she knew it couldn’t be good.
Sirens wailed in the distance, and she was never so glad to hear them.

Courtyard House at Wani, Japan
Wani is located in the northern Otsu City, which is between Lake Biwa and the Hira Mountains. It is a suburban residential area where people live leisurely, with JR Kosei Line running north and south, giving good access to Kyoto and Osaka. design it designed Courtyard House – a small house on a hill in Wani.
The owner is a dog lover who likes outdoor activities and swimming with his dogs in Lake Biwa on the weekends. The owner’s request was to live with his dogs and fully enjoy the scenery and air of Wani.
The architects chose a single-story house with a courtyard so that he could stay outdoors while preserving privacy from the surrounding houses. However, if the courtyard was surrounded by rooms on all sides, the view to Lake Biwa would be lost. Therefore, we put a part of the eaves in the outdoor space and a large opening to connect the courtyard and the outside of the house. As a result, it became more like a “semi-courtyard” than a full one.
The courtyard overlooking Lake Biwa, with the clean air flowing from the Hira Mountains, has become a cozy, warm and luxurious outdoor space with an indoor air. In this house, the entrance, windows and all the rooms face the courtyard, and so daily life is naturally centered around it. We wanted to create a house where everything in life is with the courtyard, not just a house overlooking it. The interior of one room is somewhat divided by bending around the courtyard, creating a slightly different space.
design it also wanted to have a loose atmosphere in a good way, where people and things can somehow create a place even if there is no clear shape as a room. We hope a favorite place is chosen according to the season and time, creating a generous and comfortable living atmosphere like drinking coffee at a table overlooking Lake Biwa in the morning

Iragüen Viñuela Arquitectos completes Chilean ski cabin atop reused foundations
Iragüen Viñuela Arquitectos has reused the foundations of a previous building project for this holiday home in Chile, which can accommodate up to 12 guests.
The two-storey cabin is located by the Cautín River and was commissioned by a client to enjoy winter sports with his family at the nearby resort Corralco, which is famed for its long snow season.
The cabin is positioned by the Cautín River in Chile
After the client parted ways with another architect and contractor that left only the building's foundations completed, Iragüen Viñuela Arquitectos – a Santiago-based studio led by Daniel Iragüen Contreras and Claudio Viñuela Schweitzer – was tasked with completing the job before the start of the following winter.
The existing foundation, on a bend in the river, was an ideal location for the home.
The house was built atop reused foundations
"The platform had been built in a small clearing in the forest, without cutting any trees, right at the tip of the peninsula, which allowed it to be surrounded by the river, with spectacular views towards the forest and up the hillside," the architects explained.
On the ground floor, a central open space forms the heart of the home, where the owners and their guests meet for meals and relaxing. Two bedrooms occupy either end of this level.
A central open space forms the heart of the home
"We arranged the ground-floor program to make the most of the views, contemplating a cross-shaped layout with views at its ends towards the four cardinal points," the architects explained.
"In this way, the corridor on the east-west axis leads to openings at either end, while the open central space is facing direct sunlight from the north and views of the river to the south."

Upstairs, the architects included four bunk beds that can accommodate up to eight children. The open area between the beds is large enough to form a secondary play area away from the main living room.
The home also enjoys a variety of outdoor spaces. New patios were built off-axis from the main building, creating platforms for a swimming pool and hot tub surrounded by the thick forest.
Interiors are lined with dark-stained wood
On the north side of the home, an exterior space with a grill connects to the living and dining space through full-height, sliding glass doors, allowing the residents to cook outdoors easily.
Iragüen Viñuela Arquitectos chose a simple wooden palette for the home. Its exterior boards were directly influenced by surrounding agricultural buildings. Inside, dark-stained wood lends the home a muted and tranquil ambiance.
Two bedrooms occupy either end of the ground floor
"A skin of wooden planks worn by the sun covers the main facades, borrowing from the way in which the cattle sheds in the area are lined and the grey tone of the tree bark," said Iragüen Viñuela Arquitectos.
"The interior of the house completely covered in black wood allows a great contrast with the white winter and green summer landscape, and offers an atmosphere of introspection and calm according to the vocation of shelter."
Bunk beds and a play area for children are located upstairs
Other residences in Chile include a home on the island of Chiloé by Edward Rojas Arquitectos that draws cues from timber construction traditions tracing back to Jesuit colonisation, and a low-slung home outside Santiago with hidden courtyards that help define the interiors.

How to Install Baseboard Molding
Baseboard molding provides a visual and physical connection between walls and adjacent flooring, door and window casings, and a home's architectural style. McCarran Handyman Services experts share everything you need to know when choosing and installing baseboard trim at Las Vegas Nevada.
Woodworking, Molding and Baseboards
Types of molding
Many finish McCarran Handyman Services carpenters can complete trimming jobs around the house in Las Vegas Nevada. They can often measure, cut and install trimming and molding into the interior and exterior of your home, add door and window casing and fix rough corners.
There are several types of molding from which to choose, including:
Crown molding: A decorative capping that defines the space between ceiling and wall. It is installed at an angle so that it attaches to both surfaces.
Cornices: The very top portion of the crown molding. Cornice and crown molding work together to create the trim's profile.
Cove molding: Similar to crown molding, but where the profile of crown molding bends outward, cove molding shows a concave profile.
Chair rail molding: Created to protect walls from damage from chair backs. this molding dissects the wall about 3 feet above the floor.
Panel molding: Resembles a series of large empty frames placed above chair height or stretching from floor to ceiling.
Baseboard: Serves to protect the bottoms of walls from damage and acts as a connector for the wall and flooring. Shoe molding is sometimes installed at the bottom of the baseboard to hide any irregularities in the line of the floor.
Molding and baseboard maintenance
Dust and cobwebs quickly dull the appearance of molding and baseboards. White molding, in particular, must be dusted frequently to prevent a dingy look. Crown molding should be dusted with a long-handled duster every two weeks to one month.
Since molding on lower areas of the wall is more likely to get dirty and stained, this molding should be vacuumed or dusted weekly. Wood trim that requires more attention can be cleaned with polish or wood cleaner. Water-based cleaners should not be used on wood.
McCarran Handyman Services Baseboards require frequent cleaning because of their proximity to the floor, where more dirt collects. Frequent dusting will help homeowners avoid a big job later on. Baseboards should be vacuumed with a brush attachment. Wiping with a damp cloth will remove more serious grime at Las Vegas Nevada. Care should be taken not to saturate the baseboard or wall.
As with any type of dusting, start from the highest surface and work your way downward. For example, start by dusting your crown molding, then move to the chair rail and finish with your baseboards. This method helps you eliminate dust altogether, rather than creating it after cleaning one particular surface. Don’t forget to vacuum, sweep or mop dust from the floors after you’re finished.
Baseboard moldings
one of the room's last finishing trims to be applied are meant to fill gaps between wallboard and floors, protect walls against vacuum dings and furniture scrapes, and form a pleasingly cohesive perimeter. Baseboards meet up with door casings and anchor architectural wall treatments such as paneled wainscoting.
Added after the walls are painted, the floors are laid, and the cabinets are installed, baseboard moldings play an important role in how a room looks and feels. Thoughtfully chosen baseboard moldings whether selected as part of a remodeling project or a newly constructed home go a long way toward establishing and underscoring design styles that range from streamlined modern and ornately old-world to substantially traditional.
Happily, installing baseboard molding is a job that can be easily tackled by anyone who is comfortable wielding power tools, is able to make a few specialized saw cuts, and has a knack for accurate measurements. If you think you're not up to the task, ask your friends or local building associations to recommend a reliable contractor who can be trusted to install the baseboards in a timely and professional manner.
Refinish or replace baseboards?
Due to their position on the floor, baseboards are subject to cracking and chipping by feet and furniture. Slightly scratched and chipped baseboards can be revived with some putty and paint for little cost. Irreplaceable antique or solid wood baseboards justify the effort of refinishing, while the lower cost of other materials makes replacement a better choice.
Contractors can often help you get better deals on materials, so it might be beneficial to let them purchase the materials for you.
Homeowners with damaged MDF and less expensive wood baseboards will find replacing the baseboards time-consuming but not difficult. In these cases, it often makes sense for the homeowner to tackle the job. McCarran Handyman Services Since it can be difficult to remove baseboards without breaking them, homeowners with more expensive baseboards should consider hiring a professional to perform the work. For many homeowners, the value of the baseboards justifies the cost of removal, repair and replacement at Las Vegas Nevada.

BEST ELECTRICAL OUTLET REPLACEMENT IN OMAHA LINCOLN NE COUNCIL BLUFFS IA
Electrical Outlet Replacement Services near me: Are you looking for a company like Eppley Handyman Services to provide Electrical Outlet Replacement? A major component in your home’s electrical system is the main electrical feed coming into the panel board. Between the utility wires and the panel board is the electric meter which is typically installed in a separate meter box, but sometimes they are installed in a panel board with a separate space for the meter. Meter boxes, also known as meter sockets, are often installed outside and mounted on the side of the home. Meter sockets are designed for a long lifespan, over 30 years, but they can become defective if the initial installation was below standard and will need Electrical Outlet Replacement. The safe operating life of the meter socket may be reduced by excessive moisture, environmental contaminants, frequent changing of meters, and excessive electrical loads such as overloading or short circuits, vandalism, or storm damage with Electrical Outlet Replacement.
Electrical Outlet Replacement Services near me: As the meter socket ages, the jaws which hold the meter in place can become loose if overheated due to an unbalanced load or corrosion forming between the meter terminals and the meter socket jaws which means you’ll need Electrical Outlet Replacement. As the jaws begin to heat up and expand, the connection can begin to arc generating more heat and expansion. The jaws can expand to the point where you may lose one leg of your electrical service. If you’ve ever taken the cover off of your panel board you may have notice the black and red wires (or two black wires) connected to the main breaker; each wire carries around 120 Volts into each bus bar where the circuit breakers are attached. Call Eppley Handyman Services today for Electrical Outlet Replacement.

California Pulls Democratic Candidates Into Big Tech Battle With Big Labor – CBS San Francisco
SACRAMENTO (AP) — Thousands of miles from the union halls of Pennsylvania and Michigan, organized labor is flexing its muscles in a pitched battle with Big Tech. And the Democratic Party’s 2020 class isn’t being shy about picking sides. In a rare injection of presidential politics into a state policy debate, virtually every major Democratic White House hopeful except Joe Biden has waded into a California clash between labor unions and tech giants such as Uber and Lyft over the very definition of work in a changing economy. In the run-up to Labor Day, Democrats lined up behind a labor-backed bill that would make it harder for tech companies to classify workers as independent contractors, who aren’t entitled to minimum wage or workers’ compensation. It’s a debate with national implications that labor unions love and the tech giants that created the on-demand delivery industry loathe. It also marks a fresh test of organized labor’s relevance and strength in the age of Donald Trump, who won the presidency in part by peeling away working-class voters long loyal to Democrats in a handful of pivotal Midwestern states. But in 2020, just as the nature of labor is changing, so too is the notion of the “labor vote.” Voters in many traditionally union-dominated manufacturing areas were once a reliable Democratic constituency, but they have gradually drifted to Republicans, driven more by cultural issues such as guns, abortion and immigration than by wages, benefits and pensions. Union members also are shrinking as a total of the overall vote. Still, in states with growing service and public sectors, labor has shown it is still capable of mounting large, influential campaigns on the minimum wage, health care and workers’ rights. Democrats largely have fallen in line, risking blowback from donors and voters in the powerful tech industry. “It says something about where the candidates think the primary voters are on this issue,” said Zev Yaroslavsky, a former Democratic supervisor in Los Angeles County who now works at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs. They “may believe that labor can be more helpful to them than the high-tech companies can be to them in a caucus state or a primary.” From its earliest days, the 2020 Democratic primary has highlighted the renewed power of organized labor in presidential politics. Sen. Elizabeth Warren launched her candidacy at the site of a famous labor union strike in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Democratic front-runner Biden held his first rally at a Teamsters union hall in Pittsburgh. And under pressure from organized labor, Bernie Sanders recently added additional language to his “Medicare for All” plan to provide additional oversight for union members. “Candidates understand that our members have sky-high expectations, and that’s being reflected in their campaigns,” said AFL-CIO spokesman John Weber. The Democrats’ intense courtship of organized labor reflects a new urgency for the party after Trump’s relative success with working-class voters in 2016. Trump lost the majority of AFL-CIO voters nationwide, according to data collected the union, but he outperformed previous Republicans. Specifically, Trump earned 37% of the AFL-CIO vote in 2016 compared with Democrat Hillary Clinton’s 56%. Four years earlier, Republican Mitt Romney earned 33% compared with President Barack Obama’s 65%. The courtship is playing out aggressively in California, which has a new, early primary date and new sway in the nomination process. Warren was the first to comment on the dispute between labor and big tech in the state, prompting home-state Sen. Kamala Harris, also running for the White House, to follow suit. Sanders has pushed similar legislation at the federal level for years and has expressed strong support for the California proposal. Among other candidates, Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Indiana, rallied with rideshare drivers outside Uber’s San Francisco headquarters last week, while former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke has outlined similar plans and New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker said he supports the bill. Biden, a Pennsylvania native who casts himself as a champion for organized labor, is staying silent for now, perhaps weary of getting in the middle of two powerful interest groups. The presidential attention has shone a spotlight on a growing political headache for an important part of the tech industry — headquartered in California — as it fends off pressure over privacy issues and election security. Democrats have struggled with just how cozy to get with tech companies that are revolutionizing the economy in ways many Americans enjoy but that are upending traditional business models. In 2020, a candidate’s willingness to confront big tech has increasingly become a sign of their progressive bona fides, even as they court young people who use the services and the tech workers who contribute to their campaigns. While union membership is down nationwide, organized labor is positioned to lend significant resources to candidates. In 2016, for example, the total labor sector contributed more than $217 million to campaigns nationwide with almost 90% going to Democrats, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Beyond money, labor unions can provide volunteers to campaigns to help with knocking on doors, making calls and other essential work that often distinguishes successful campaigns. If passed, California’s law would be the strictest in the nation when it comes to classifying workers. The new labor would entitle workers to minimum wage, workers compensation, unemployment insurance and benefits such as paid sick days. The rules would apply across the economy, but its impact on Uber, Lyft and meal delivery companies such as Postmates and DoorDash is dominating the debate. The companies say that treating their workers as employees would upend businesses designed around worker flexibility. “We would become vastly different services,” said Adrian Durbin, senior director of communication at Lyft. This past week, Uber, Lyft and DoorDash threatened to spend $90 million on a November 2020 state ballot measure if they cannot make a deal specific to their workers. The Democratic candidates don’t seem to be buying techs arguments. Buttigieg rallied Tuesday in front of Uber’s San Francisco headquarters with drivers on a three-day pilgrimage from Los Angeles to Sacramento. “If you’re working a gig that means you’re a worker and you ought to be protected as a worker,” he said. Harris, though a campaign spokesman last week, backed the bill even though she has ties to Uber, where her brother-in-law, Tony West, is general counsel. The consulting firm running her campaign, SCRB Strategies, is paid to lobby California lawmakers on Uber’s behalf. A change in California, the most populous state, is likely to have ripples across the country as both the federal government and the states wrestle with questions that arise from new technology and services. Illustrating the stakes for labor about who controls the White House, the California law could set up a clash with the Trump administration, which has issued guidance saying gig workers are contractors, meaning they can’t unionize. That’s a reversal of the Obama administration. © Copyright 2019 Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed
