I just finished A Psalm for the Wild Built by Becky Chambers (please go read it) and it has got me thinking about Neverafter. There are spoilers ahead, but it’s okay.

Dex, the protagonist of the book, has everything they could ever want: a family that loves them, warmth and comfort, and a fulfilling job. Despite this, they are unhappy and restless and tired. Mosscap, a robot, essentially tells Dex that it’s okay, and their life does not need a purpose.

The fairies in Neverafter are like Dex. They are obsessed with everyone having their place and achieving the happily ever after. The characters, however, are not satisfied with this concept because their choices are superficial. They don’t like their prescribed purpose, maybe they don’t want one at all.

I think I was wrong about this season. It’s not about capitalism, it’s maybe about what our purpose is and our identity. Sure, capitalism can complicate that, but it’s more about self satisfaction.

Or maybe I think too much.

It's one of my favorite parts of their character. I related to them so much, especially towards the end.

I really love Sibling Dex. I know that their discontent in what is apparently a utopia rubs some readers the wrong way, but I love that part of them. I love the yearning, and the not knowing what is yearned for. There are so many hobbies, crafts, skills that I have taken up and learned and loved and then felt the love fade and a hollowness where there had been satisfaction. It's great seeing that in Dex, it makes me feel seen.

Kesler being protective of his family when Fitz and Biana visits their house for the first time in Lodestar is nice to read. I would be protective too. Fitz and Biana’s family overshadow them in every way. The Vackers have their own personal beliefs of how people should be living their life. So Kesler being on guard when they come over is realistic. People have only crapped on them about their entire life. Their marriage, their children, being talentless. And then having someone who is the opposite of everything you stand for. I would be sweating with allowing them in my house. I would be so horrified of them saying anything discriminatory or out of pocket. Just for Biana to be very respectful. I love a respectful Queen. Fitz didn’t really say much he just kinda stood there. Either way Della and Alden raised them right when it comes to that. I liked how Biana talked about all the positives she thought about their home. It’s refreshing. Shannon ate down with this scene.
