We asked Hawkins for a quote, but he just drew a card and told us "the probability of [us] getting a quote [was] zero." Maybe next time, Hawkins!

Happy birthday to Madame Shyarly of Fishman Island! She is 29.

Chuu being 6 years younger than everybody else doesn't mean much when they're adults but it's absolutely hilarious when you consider when they were younger. He always got the short end of the stick.

I love your shyarly art! Can you elaborate on Shyarly hating how humans and fishppl use her religion?

And to answer your question- the basics is that Shyarly’s religion is very very old. It was practiced by her ancestors for generations and generations. But the humans above viewed it as demonic- full on forbidding any practice of it anywhere expect underwater for a couple of decades. If anyone was found practicing they would either be thrown in jail or beaten to a bloody plump.

Then the rein of Otohime made it SO MUCH WORSE. The queen might have been well meaning but what she did just cause unnecessary divide. Her laws made the Fishmen and merfolk think that if they just left their old ways and culture it would be so much more better for them. Maybe even safer!

The practice ban was lifted once Tiger Fisher started to be a actual icon but like how the slave trade didn’t stop- either did the disgust of this old way. It’s still common for humans to make fun of the religion and even trash places of worship. Some Fishmen still think that Otohime was completely right.

So Shyraly’s spent her teenaged years to now dealing with both humans making fun and harassing her for her practices and Fishmen telling her she is being idiotic and old fashioned. Though, the former isn’t that common compared to the latter nowadays.

I make no claims to being a skilled painter, but the fact this idea turned out looking like I wanted it to is an accomplishment. Yes, that is Okiku striking that Dio pose from the Phantom Blood OP. Fans of the blog likely recognize the connection. Hawkins the Magician, Kiku the Heirophant, Luffy the Fool. Very cool dynamic in Chapter 913 of One Piece which gets a neat folklore allusion in the title too. Hawkins's tarot cards forecast a Fool meeting someone who tracks with a struggle the Heirophant upright/reversed would represent.

Which gets me to Shyarly from yesterday. I knew Kiku & Hawkins had the same birthday. Figured it was a coincidence until I saw Shyarly did too. It's not just the Chrysanthemum Festival date, it's also Fortune Teller's Day. That makes Kiku having the whole "step ahead" concept we talked about as well as the way we talked about some scenes with her having an extra dimension if you remember Luffy now has Future Sight a lot more interesting to me.
