Baltische Auszeit

Zu Gast im polnischen Ostseebad Kolberg

Wer Kolberg (Kolobrzeg) besucht, macht eigentlich gleich drei Reisen: eine in die hanseatische Vergangenheit, eine in die polnische Gegenwart und eine in die touristische Zukunft des charmanten Ostseebades.

Da ist beispielsweise die Wyspa Solna, die Salzinsel, inmitten der Kurstadt, wo bis ins 19. Jahrhundert in über 30 Salinen und vier Gradierwerken Salz gewonnen wurde, das der Stadt Reichtum und Ansehen bescherte. Und natürlich der Hafen. Die alten Speicher lassen noch heute die Geschäftigkeit der einst so wohlhabenden Hansestadt erahnen. Stillgelegte Schienen entlang der Kais legen Zeugnis ab vom Löschen des Stückguts, das anfangs gar mit Cargo-Seglern herantransportiert wurde. Heute liegen Piratenschiffe für Touristen friedlich am Pier. Ein Gaudi für die ganze Familie. Längst ist der Tourismus der wichtigste Wirtschaftszweig und spült wieder gutes Geld in die Gemeinde.

Über allem thront der stattliche Leuchtturm  an der Mündung der Persante, den der deutsche Hafenkommandant kurz vor Kriegsende im März 1945 sprengen ließ, um der feindlichen Artillerie den Orientierungspunkt bei der Bombardierung des Hafens zu nehmen.

Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, als Westpommern längst an Polen gefallen war, wurde der Turm wieder aufgebaut. Er ist heute das Wahrzeichen des beliebtesten Ostseebades Polens. Urlauber zieht es neben der gemütlichen Stadt mit ihren engen Gassen und alten Bürgerhäusern, die den Krieg überlebten, natürlich an die kilometerlangen weißen Sandstrände. Die können es allemal mit der internationalen Konkurrenz aufnehmen. Sie sind zeitlos schön, scheren sich nicht um Staatszugehörigkeit, so wie es auch die Baltische See nie getan hat.

Die Plattenbauten aus sozialistischer Zeit, als sich die polnische Planwirtschaft langsam aber sicher ihrem Zusammenbruch entgegenschleppte, mögen jedoch so gar nicht in das Bild eines harmonischen Panoramas passen. Immerhin sind sie inzwischen recht ordentlich saniert und liegen nicht direkt am Strand.

Ein Sanierungsfall war auch die heutige Top-Herberge von Kolberg, das Boutique und Wellness Hotel Shuum. Trotz kubistischer Formen fügt es sich geschmeidig in die windgegerbte Küste ein. „Wir wollten etwas völlig Neues schaffen, auch innen. Weg vom überladenen Interieur“, erklärt General Manager Adam Hok das Konzept. „Keine Spiegel im Lift, klare Linien überall, ob im Restaurant oder Spa. Reduktion. Weniger ist mehr.“

Das Konzept ist aufgegangen, die Klientel, die bereit ist, knapp 200 Euro für ein Doppelzimmer pro Nacht zu zahlen, hat sich gefunden. „In der Hochsaison haben wir etwa eine Hälfte deutsche Gäste, die andere polnische. Die restlichen Nationen bewegen sich im Promillebereich“, so Hok. „In der Nebensaison beherbergen wir etwa 70 Prozent deutsche Urlauber.“

Kein Wunder. Berlin ist nicht einmal 300 Kilometer entfernt, die Straßen sind tip-top. Zumindest auf polnischer Seite und die Preise für vergleichbare Angebote in Polen deutlich preiswerter.

Wo immer es geht, versucht man Nachhaltigkeit im Shuum umzusetzen. Auf den Tisch kommen polnische und internationale Gerichte. Überwiegend werden Bio-Lebensmittel Made in Poland verwendet. Und gekonnt zubereitet. Gault Millau goutierte dies mit zwei Hauben. Völlig zurecht. Das Essen schmeckt nicht nur köstlich, es sieht auch so aus.

Das Duschgel ist organisch, auf Minicontainer wird bewusst verzichtet. Die täglichen Yogaklassen sind kostenlos, die Spa-Anwendungen nicht. Beides wird nachgefragt.

Aber egal, ob man nun im Shuum residiert oder in einer gemütlichen Ferienwohnung in der Altstadt nächtigt, der eigentliche Star ist natürlich die Ostsee mit ihren endlosen weißen Sandstränden. Zu jeder Jahreszeit. © 2023 · Marc Vorsatz | MEDIA CREW MITTE

Kolberg mit Kind: Kolberg bietet ein breites Angebot für Familien. Ein Highlight ist die „Stadt der Mäuse“ (Miasto Myszy), direkt am Leuchtturm. In den Kellerräumen des ehemaligen Hafenmeisterbüros können Kinder in die Welt der kleinen Nager eintauchen. Rund 500 Mäuse verschiedener Arten leben in großen Terrarien. Wie sehen eigentlich Astrexmäuse aus? Die mit dem langen gekräuselten Fell. Und wie groß – oder besser gesagt winzig klein – sind eigentlich Zwergmäuse? Warum haben Berber-Streifengrasmäuse eigentlich diese merkwürdige Fellzeichnung? Das und vieles mehr lernen die Kleinen in dem einzigartigen Museum.

Sportliche Aktivitäten: Die Region Kolberg eignet sich hervorragend für ausgedehnte Strandwanderungen, Fahrrad- und Kajaktouren, Segelausflüge und natürlich auch für ein erfrischendes Bad in der Ostsee.

If you had to make a miracle box/fae court based on your heritage, what animals would you put in it?

shakes head. My heritage is muddled and mixed. Native American, Italian, and Irish and all. Lots of fae folklore and native american stories could be thrown together, but I dont particularly find the exercise interesting.

I have made some Native American fae based off native mythos before- like Sit-shuum, Miiwok, and Aalu. So there is that :D

The Shuum

(Nitta, Inkka, and Takke respectively)

The Shuum were a species of sprite-like fae nature folk I initially created mostly for use on Furvilla. I had considered making custom ones for people, but that never came to be. I still might do that just off of FV. Depends. I haven’t decided if I want to make them a “closed species” or not. Probably not?

Not gonna lie, they’re heavily inspired by Katamari Damacy. Kinoko is my absolute favorite cousin to play as. (This is also why Takke there is surrounded by KD mushrooms.)

As a species the Shuum are small, generally helpful little people- not too unlike a house elf except they have free reign and will, and aren’t limited by the rules house elves must follow. Typically found in rural areas, especially in areas surrounded by forests. As they resemble typical mushrooms, care must be taken when mushroom hunting not to mistake your quarry for a one. Not typically wrathful, they are still capable of seeking revenge and will do so in the most interesting ways. It’s highly advised to stay on their good side, with particular note of the toxic varieties. 

The non-toxic varieties can be eaten, but they wish you wouldn’t. More nutritious than regular mushrooms due to their varied diet. Their diet will often include fresh produce and meat on occasion as well as the standard decomposing matter their non-sentient cousins require. Lost travelers will sometimes find extra berries and rations in their packs as gifts from the shuum, and from time to time will be invited to their “village”. 

It’s not uncommon to find villages with multiple different kinds co-existing peacefully.  Individuals each have particular roles in the village. Some gather food, some farm, others care for the children, etc. etc. The Shuum are not a gendered people, but will sometimes adopt gendered pronouns after contact with humans. 

The three individuals pictured here are Nitta, Inkka, and Takke. 

Nitta resembles a fly amanita, or toadstool. They are very skilled in making potions and other forms of alchemy, and will work very closely with doctors to develop new medicines. Nitta has an energetic sassy personality, and is very enthusiastic in what they do. They love showing others their work, and take great joy in giving “samples”. Just take care in what may have been put into the brews, or you may be in for a wild ride.

Inkka resembles an inky cap mushroom. They are a doctor, skilled primarily in the production of medicines. Shuum medicines are known for their potency, leading to many travelers becoming lost in search of shuum villages to acquire some. Inkka is quiet and reserved, sometimes described as stoic and cautious. They can be very stern and strict, but it’s mostly for the good of the patients. They care quite a lot, both about their job and the people they help.

Takke resembles a shitake mushroom. Takke is an herbalist, specializing in the care and growth of the plant-life used in the making potions and medicines. As such they work very closely with doctors and alchemists. They grow regular herbs and spices for culinary purposes as well, and Takke in particular prides themselves on their teas. They are described as very friendly and always willing to help. It’s actually because of Takke’s assistance that people learned of the shuum’s existence and helped develop an exchange of cultures. They’re always willing to provide advice to farmers and gardeners on how to get the most out of their cultivars. Takke has become a sort of ambassador between their village and the local human population.

And that’s about all I have for now. These are probably the most “developed” characters I have. lol
