There's a reading of his revenge speech which I come and go on because I'm not sure if I'm reading it or interpreting it correctly:

Look at this, look at this, look at this. Look at what he's saying. First of all, that "an utter disgrace to the world/walking scandal", sonzai jitai ga "shuubun" datta, is a direct callback to his earlier line:

Akechi つまり『隠し子』さ。あの男にとって俺は、存在自体が醜聞⋯ tsumari "kakushigo" sa. ano otoko ni totte ore wa, sonzai jitai ga shuubun... So I'm his bastard child. My very existence is nothing but a scandal...

Except when he talks about the future, when he talks about what he plans to do to Shido, it's past tense, with datta. "I, whose mere existence was nothing but a scandal to him". Because what was the rest of his first sentence? ano otoko ni totte—"as far as he's concerned". "I was nothing but a publicity problem to him, but now..."

(kakushigo isn't just a "bastard child", by the way—it's literally the "hidden child" of a powerful figure, often a politician, most commonly seen in scandals. "I'm like those news stories you've heard about".)

"i will control him!"

Let's take another look at the last line:

Akechi ~その時初めて⋯存在自体が『醜聞』だった俺が、ヤツを支配する⋯ヤツを超えるんだ!! sono toki hajimete... sonzai jitai ga "shuubun" datta ore ga, yatsu o shihai suru... yatsu o koeru n da!! And that's when I—an utter disgrace to the world—will rule over him. I will prevail! Then, for the first time, I, the walking scandal, will control that piece of shit! I will eclipse him!

ALC has some pertinent definitions for 支配 shihai. Someone shihai sareta is "whipped"; they are "on a short leash". Someone shihai sarenai—"not having shihai done to them"—is "independent". A shihai suru tame no tatakai is "a struggle for dominance". And to shihai suru is "to call the shots; to take the reins". It means "to control someone"; to tame someone, or dominate them.

Are you getting the picture yet? This is a painfully ironic speech. Keeping Akechi on a short leash, telling him how and when to use his powers, or move, or breathe, or live at all, is exactly what Shido has done. It seems like what Akechi is describing here is a situation where Shido has tremendous power (he's prime minister, after all), but he can only ever use that power as Akechi allows; as Akechi dictates.

He's describing, essentially, turning the tables on Shido; reversing their positions. And this is something that can't have been part of his original plan. If this is what he's saying, this has grown out of how Shido has treated him. Akechi is the chicken coming home to roost, the leopard eating Shido's face. Because Akechi has lived in Shido's shadow all his life, and he's ready to step out of it and, as Ryuji tries to tell him with a very different meaning, be his own man.

IDK, it's all a bit Oedipal, with the son destroying the father and essentially replacing him, with the mother as the cause. And I don't think Akechi cares at all for how Japan is organised, or what the government does. He doesn't care for what Shido does with his power. He just wants him to be unable to enjoy it. And he wants him to know he owes everything he has to his abandoned son, that he lives and dies only at that son's whim.

This explanation accounts for why the plan is to make Shido prime minister, which has puzzled the fandom pretty much in perpetuity as far as I can make out: it's possible that particular bit wasn't always the plan, and has become the plan because Shido was such a dick—because Akechi resents those restraints (which, let's not forget, he chose to obey and to live with). He resents the high-handed way Shido has controlled him, and likely some of the uses to which he's been put.

It's a hilariously bad plan with manifest flaws, of course. And I really don't know if this is truly what he meant. But the irony of it fascinates me.

Hmm I'm confident enough to assume that you already knew about this, but I feel like sharing (again) so yea!

As you can see, I was thinking of Okkotsu while scrolling my twitter timeline until I stumbled upon this thread that says most of the characters' birthdates are based on the season in Japan/(old(?)) Japanese calendar.

＊I believe it's called 24 divisions of the solar year (二十四節気/nijūshisekki) and the supplementary solar terms (雑節/zassetsu). (OvO)

The OP also writes the explanation on their website (I'll drop the link below!) about the theory they have, and what caught my interest the most was Yuuji and Todo because apparently they were born during Spring/Vernal Equinox (shunbun/春分) for Yuuji (March 20th) and Autumnal Equinox (shuubun/秋分) for Todo (September 23rd)—— in which on both dates, the length of day and night are equal!

The OP explains in their site that it symbolizes their brotherhood. Interesting, innit? <:D

Also, it appears that those whose birthday isn't based on either two of them (the systems) like Toji and Nanami, won't be "living long"..... something like that......... ;_;)

The koto’s sung was quiet over Suiren Shrine’s grounds. Autumn was moving in even if Kaede’s home always wore the red gold of the maples. Shuubun no Hi approached which meant his privacy would be trampled by guests. How long before the ghost would have to appear from his tree and shoo wandering patrons away?

Pale, delicate fingers picked at the strings without thought yet still elicited a haunting melody; something lost and wandering. Fingers that would never wear callouses. Fingers of a young boy lost to war and tragedy centuries ago. He’d watch another season past and still be timeless.

How many children had Kaede watch run through these gardens and grow, seemingly every time he turned his head? The adults were harder to notice but he noticed small things, more tendencies than physical. 

How Hokusai had calmed, how he smiled more in the presence of his husband and little ones. 

The two physicians in their constant coming and going’s, the closeness that grew and an affection that some may miss, especially with Mitsue’s constant scowl but spoke in the way that he walked close to Mashuel.

The loud arrival of Vani, Sari, and their family, the parade of lil ones in tow. They now lived away from the grounds but their presence was still a constant thing.

The only ones that Kaede could resonate with were the other immortals; the jade rabbit and dragon. Those ghost-blooded twins, the elder coming and going like the wind itself. Occasionally the snake and crow. But even then, the snake had a little one of his own now, even as reclusive and protective that he was. 

And W’ehnri had grown. When had it happened? They had looked almost identical in age upon first meeting. Now he had to look /up/ at the once-frail Seeker when they talked. Even when W’ehnri visited with daily treats to the ghost’s offering plate and took a knee (perhaps out of some consideration), the space the other took up seemed....bigger.

What did he do?

A discordant sound rung across the grounds as he rested hands over the koto, gritting his teeth. He knew his existence was an odd one, even among spirits. A lost soul taken in by a great auspice and blessed with her fire and form. Lost to his own aramitama and put to rest by those of Suiren. And now he was simply a ghost tied to a specific item to a specific place, having to rely on others to leave the shrine’s gates. 

Mori had told him there was a chance...that he could alter his form. Hasu-dono’s energy and the constant offerings allotted him enough power to do so. But...it was frightening. What if he messed it up? It wasn’t like...playing an instrument! What did he do, just close his eyes and something ghost-y happened? What if he messed up? What if he ended up fading away to the Lifestream?

...it was terrifying. 

But if he didn’t.../he/ would be gone the next time Kaede turned his head.

And he didn’t want that...not one bit.

I have only come across this word once in my ten years of studying Japanese, which just goes to show that incredibly low-frequency words can be made of very high-frequency kanji. 

Risshuu is one of 24 solar terms on the ancient Chinese lunisolar calendar. Like many things invented in China, it was adopted by other East Asian countries and used for centuries. 

Though Japan has adopted the Western calendar for nearly everything now, you still see two of the 24 solar terms on a regular basis:

These are both national holidays in Japan.

You dialed the number on the slip of paper and waited for the line to connect. It took a while but the person on the other end picked up.

“Hello, this is Ojiro Aran speaking.”

“Hi Aran, it’s me. How are you doing?”

Aran immediately recognized your voice and switched to a much more light-hearted tone. “Hey! Doing well, today’s a rest day for us, so I don’t have any training. How are you doing? How’s Kita?”

“I’m doing pretty good, just hanging in there with the students.” You paused. “Shinsuke is quite busy these days.”

You told Aran how the harvest was right around the corner, so the farmers were all carefully watching the crops and waiting for the prime days to maximize yields. Just this morning, he had mentioned visiting the milling factory to check out the machines with the other farmers.

“Remind him not to overwork himself,” Aran mentioned. 

“Don’t worry, I will,” you reassured him. “So, actually, I wanted to ask if you will be free at the end of October? It’s the cultural festival at Inarizaki.”

“Oh yea! It happens around that time.”

“I was hoping to organize a reunion of some of Shinsuke’s teammates. I know it’s also around the start of V.League...and I don’t have the others’ info…”

You heard Aran laughing on the other end. “You know what, that’s a great idea. It’s been a while since I’ve been back. Leave this to me, I’ll go check-in with the other guys. And I’ll be sure to keep this from Kita too.”

“Thank you so much Aran! I hope training goes well.” 

“No problem, thanks for suggesting this idea. Then, I’ll be in contact soon.”

Aran was always so quick to pick up on your intentions. It wasn’t a surprise that Kita and Aran were close in high-school. The two easily understood each other. Aran conversed with Kita and saw past the latter’s esoteric methods. Kita found Aran as a close friend he could lean and rely on. Next to Omimi, Kita and Aran were honestly the three mature pillars supporting the other team members. You were grateful that Kita had Aran in his life. 

How our paths have intersected Could only be a matter of chance If not, then by designs of fate

In the blink of an eye, the autumnal equinox came about. It seemed like just yesterday you had visited the Kita family graves for the first time. Today, for Ohigan, you went to go pay your respects again with Kita, except Granny stayed at home due to a persistent cough. You and Kita scrubbed the stone tablets, laid out flowers and food, and caught Kita’s family up on recent events.

While you two left the cemetery, you noticed a field of red spider lilies. Graveyard flowers, as some would call them. They were flowers from the Underworld, supposedly, with poisonous roots. They didn’t bloom for very long, but because their time coincided with Ohigan, these flowers were thus named higanbana, “flowers of higan”. The wave of blood-red was captivating and haunting, and although you could not deny their beauty, sad thoughts inevitably began to cloud your mind.

“Let’s go to the rice fields,” Kita suggested. 

You tore your attention away from thoughts about the flowers. “Did you leave something there?” 

“No, but there’s something I wanted to show you.”

During the drive, you half-listened to Kita. Kita had sensed your discomfort and tried to fill the silence with conversation to distract your mind. Kita normally did not ramble, but if it helped ease your mind off your thoughts for just a moment, he would gladly speak of the weather. When the two of you got to a more comfortable, safer spot, then you could open up with more ease.

After passing a dense swath of trees, you got the first glimpses of the open fields and let out a quiet gasp. Kita pulled aside and studied your expression, committing it into memory.

When Kita first faced the same stretch of lands here, barren and withered in the winter, he had his own doubts and reservations. He was alone at the time, burdened, and uncertain. How was it possible that in the course of months, the same land would look the way it did now? 

“Shinsuke…” you said, trying to find the right words for the moment.

The corners of Kita’s lips curved up just slightly. “Incredible isn’t it?”

It wasn’t a wave of magic or a process transformed overnight. He had worked for this. Kita woke up every day with the intention of coming down to the fields and tending to them, acting as a steward facilitating the course of nature’s own design. Farming became his new ritual. Step by step, one day he looked up and saw the current scene. He had dreamed of sharing this scene with you for such a long time, but the real experience could not compare.

“Incredible barely begins to cover it.”

Waves. Golden waves, neverending, stretching on far beyond your eyes could see. Each of the rice stalks stood proudly. The gentle wind whistled through the stalks and made them dance until the furthest point where the sky kissed the earth. Bountiful and full of life.

Endnotes:

Ohigan is a Buddhist & Shinto holiday taking place three days before and after the Spring and Autumnal Equinox. Like Obon, people may visit their hometown and visit family graves. One of the days is a public holiday too, so businesses close. It’s also a time for enjoying outdoor autumnal activities.
