is it possible to successfully depict a gay relationship without showing kissing/sex? Yes.
does Dave Malloy succeed at this in Moby-Dick: A Musical Reckoning? Well, going out on a limb here, but since it’s less explicit in portraying gayness than its >150 year-old source material, I’m gonna say No.
#‘he’s just staying true to the subtext of the book!!!’ bitch they get MARRIED in the book!!!!#‘Do you Ishmael take this man to be your Friend And Possible Lover?’#like.. good LORD#don’t hype your ‘explicit gay rep’ and then give us That#if a reviewer can refer to their relationship like that and not be wrong within the CANON TEXT of your musical then the rep ain’t explicit!#i can’t get on Melville’s case about not making it ‘canon’ since he was actually not-straight himself#and skirting the law with his portrayal as it was#but DAVE. it is **2019** my dude!!!!!#sorry that you have Straight Man Disease but you can’t take credit for gay rep and then not actually have it in your show#shut up about Melville’s relationship with Hawthorne and think about what you’ve done#also note: this is reflective of my experience seeing it on the 3rd + what i heard from my friends about the show on the 6th#so i hope that changes were/are going to be made but even so - i’m still angry that the original show lacked the rep Dave promised#because now it would be a lot more hollow just as a response to backlash (not that there’s been any 🙄🙄)#but WHATEVER
